3-0 out of 5 stars Nice
I purchased it for my father, but we didn't use it that much yet the quality of the DVDs seemed fine.

Charlton Heston made a Bible DVD set too, and I'm thinking that might be more exciting then this one.Of what I heard of the DVD it did seem well, kind of dull.Yet I believe that the Bible, read properly, can be very exciting.I give these DVDs a rating of "alright."

4-0 out of 5 stars driving with the bible
This is a quality product. The only con is that they play backround music while reading Sciptures. That is distracting as both the Word and the music are good.

I ordered this for Christmas - paid the extra to get right away and it came next day.Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars James Earl Jones Voice is Key
This is an excellent way to listen to scripture especially while driving. Fast delivery. Thanks.

1-0 out of 5 stars James Earl Jones should stick with Darth Vader.
I was excited to get this CD set, since I know James Earl Jones has a great set of pipes, and I have listened so much to Alexander Scourby's reading of the Bible that I was ready for a new reading.I was disappointed the first time I listened.Jones does not use inflection while he reads; the result is that the words sound lifeless. As a Christian believer, that abhors me.

But more than his lifeless reading, I am apalled at Jones' changing of the text.He is reading the King James Version, but he changes the words at will. For example, the text will read "Christ Jesus" and Jones will read "Jesus Christ."I counted 21 errors in his reading of the Book of Ephesians alone. If you believe, as I do, in the divine inspiration of the Word of God, you will not be able to stand how Jones imposes his own changes to the text without any textual or scriptural justification.Jones should stick with Darth Vader. ... Product Description

In the mid-1950s three unrecruited black basketball players, coached by a white former prison guard who had never before coached a college team, led a small Jesuit university in San Francisco to two national titles. The Dandy Dons describes for the first time how the unprecedented accomplishment of the Dons, led by coach Phil Woolpert and future hall-of-famers Bill Russell and K. C. Jones, paved the way for black talent in major college basketball and transformed the sport.

James W. Johnson traces the backgrounds of the coach and players, chronicles the heart-stopping games on the road to the championships, and details the Dons’ novel techniques: a more vertical game, more central defense, and intimidation as part of game strategy. He also gives a textured picture of life on an integrated basketball team amid a culture of racism and Jim Crow in mid-twentieth-century America.

Product Description
From 1932 to 1972, the United States Public Health Service conducted a non-therapeutic experiment involving over 400 black male sharecroppers infected with syphilis. The Tuskegee Study had nothing to do with treatment. It purpose was to trace the spontaneous evolution of the disease in order to learn how syphilis affected black subjects. The men were not told they had syphilis; they were not warned about what the disease might do to them; and, with the exception of a smattering of medication during the first few months, they were not given health care. Instead of the powerful drugs they required, they were given aspirin for their aches and pains. Health officials systematically deceived the men into believing they were patients in a government study of "bad blood", a catch-all phrase black sharecroppers used to describe a host of illnesses. At the end of this 40 year deathwatch, more than 100 men had died from syphilis or related complications. "Bad Blood" provides compelling answers to the question of how such a tragedy could have been allowed to occur.Tracing the evolution of medical ethics and the nature of decision making in bureaucracies, Jones attempted to show that the Tuskegee Study was not, in fact, an aberration, but a logical outgrowth of race relations and medical practice in the United States. Now, in this revised edition of "Bad Blood", Jones traces the tragic consequences of the Tuskegee Study over the last decade. A new introduction explains why the Tuskegee Study has become a symbol of black oppression and a metaphor for medical neglect, inspiring a prize-winning play, a Nova special, and a motion picture. A new concluding chapter shows how the black community's wide-spread anger and distrust caused by the Tuskegee Study has hampered efforts by health officials to combat AIDS in the black community. "Bad Blood" was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and was one of the "N.Y. Times" 12 best books of the year. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars important info, but could have been much more pithy
The author seemed to be trying to include as many quotes as possible to increase the number of pages in this book. The story could have been well told in one third the time. As it is, his main points are lost in the trivial details.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love It From Jump
I was into this book the first couple of pages.I knew I would enjoy reading the book.I highly recommend.I would also like to recommend the book on Henrietta Lacks. If you don't know who she is, you should.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bad Blood: Quality Product
The product arrived very quickly and in excellent condition.I think it was a great value for the money spent.Additionally, this book is well written.I had a hard time putting it down.I appreciate the way the author refered to political climate and social climate and how it influenced the continuation of the study. This is a great reference tool for anyone studying history, social science, or ethics in research.

4-0 out of 5 stars fascinating
this is a truly fascinating read, and i recommend it to anyone curious.i read this at the suggestion of my psychology professor, and am still surprised by my prior ignorance to the study. bad blood is well-written and amazingly well-researched. bad blood is so intriguing that it reads like a novel, although it is actually a critique and record of a study that almost single-handedly brought about the current rules of ethics for human experimentation.

Product Description
An experienced reconnaissance Marine officer, Bruce Meyers paints a colorful and accurate picture of the special recon landings that preceded every major amphibious operation in the Pacific War. Credited with saving countless lives, these Marine scouts went in stealthily at night from submarines, PT boats, Catalinas, and high-speed transports. Swift, silent, and deadly, they landed on more than two hundred enemy beaches, from Tarawa to Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa to collect intelligence on potential landing sites. They measured water depths, charted coral heads, gathered soil samples, sought out enemy locations, and took photographs. In short, they obtained information vital to the success of American operations in the Pacific.

This book represents the first time World War II Marine recon landings have been chronicled. Meyers explains that only the story of their contributions in later wars has been previously documented. His book describes the start of it all, letting readers join the men as they slip over the sides of their rubber boats and make their way inland. Only now can the public appreciate the accomplishments of these daring and intrepid Marines. 224 pages. 25 photographs. 14 maps. Hardcover. 6 x 9 inches. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Printer Drops the Ball
I pre-ordered this book as its topic was of great interest to me professionally. Sadly I had to return it due to a major error by the printer in which pages 11-42 were missing. Even with the missing material this is a very short book at only 138 pages (without the end matter and notes) in a small format of 8" x 5". My negative review is not a reflection on the author and the quality of his research and writing, but instead on the printer who made such a glaring error that went to market unnoticed. I still look forward to reading this book, but will want to lay my hands on a copy to make sure its complete before buying it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Intro to John Paul Jones and the Early American Navy
This slim volume is a fine introduction (or refresher) to the subject for middle-schoolers on up.

The chapter titles are as follows:

Prologue
1. Young John Paul
2. Merchant Sea Captain
3. The Providence and Alfred in American Waters
4. The Ranger in the Irish Sea
5. The Bonhomme Richard and Flamborough Head
6. Honors in Europe and America
7. Russian Admiral
8. A Place in History

The author begins with a brief but exciting tale of a mission undertaken by Jones and some of his crew in April 1778. He follows with the usual type of "Who was this man and why did he do the things he did?" kind of rhetorical questions that (hopefully) serve to pique the reader's interest enough to keep reading.

The first chapter introduces one to young John Paul's humble beginnings, his family, and mid-18th-century Scotland. Our hero soon develops an interest in the mariner's life and serves on several trade vessels. He quickly makes a name for himself as a talented young officer and in 1775 offers his services to the newly-formed American Continental Navy. Most of his exploits over the next few years are around Europe and the British Isles, intercepting British warships and traders alike. One reads about the British press' efforts to paint Jones as a dark and ruthless scourge of the seas, when in fact he was quite reasonable and merciful -- within the context of war, of course.

By chapter 7, the American Revolution is over and Jones has a new, diplomatic mission in Europe, which is barely more than mentioned. Yearning for the sea, he then accepts an admiralty in the Russian Navy. His service there is brief but adventurous, winning many victories and turning the tide against the Turks. Unfortunately, his great success, along with a lack of political skill, results in some jealous rivals effectively stalling Jones' career. The final chapter briefly mentions his retirement to Paris and subsequent death from illness in 1792. It finishes with Jones' remains eventually being transplanted to an elaborate sarcophagus under the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel, a fitting and honorable tribute to the Father of the American Navy.

While Bradford includes the occasional personal element about Jones in the narrative, there really isn't much of a sense of the man on a personal level. It is all about his career -- highlights only, of course -- and the contributions he made to the American Revolution, later to the Russian battles against the Turks, and to the American Navy in general, both in theory and practice. Now, perhaps this was exactly the aim of the author/publisher, but I would have liked to read a bit more on Jones' youth, personality, friendships, any romantic relationships?, etc. If a few maps/sketches/sidebars were removed, there would have been room for a few more personal details. (E.g., Why a full page on Louis XVI? Why a double-page spread of the painting 'Heirs to the Fame of John Paul Jones'?)

Bradford's writing flows easily and is well-suited to his primary audience. I noticed no instances of awkward phrasing or redundant text, as I have in a couple other volumes in the series, and typos are practically nonexistent. Unfortunately, characteristic of this series (as well as many other short and/or youth-oriented books), there are no end/footnotes. There is a 'Timeline' of Jones's life at the end of the book, as well as a helpful Glossary. There is also a short list of 'Additional Resources', a Bibliography, and a brief index.

There are several photos and reproductions of paintings, documents, etc. (many color, others B&W), which I really appreciated. But, as indicated above, and as has been the case with other volumes I've read in the series, there are a couple pictures or side-boxes here & there that are only marginally relevant or interesting and whose space could have been better filled with more text.

Overall, a more-than-satisfactory addition to the LALT series.

Product Description

By showing Joyce's continued relevance to literary scholarship in the new century, Twenty-First Joyce previews the future of James Joyce studies. The essays feature Joycean takes on various types of literary criticism, including linguistics, comparative studies, translation, and aesthetics. Some of the foremost Joycean scholars provide particularly strong examples of the value of cultural and comparative studies brought to bear on his work, and they demonstrate the extent to which James Joyce has affected and influenced our cultural, political, historical, social, and artistic awareness in the past century and his relevance and significance for the present.
