one of her best-- from a die-hard DWJ fan
I have read EVERY ONE of DWJ's books, and unfortunately, this is one of her best. I say unfortunately because they only ran a small edition and it's now ridiculously expensive. I bought it a few years ago when it was about $...still expensive but worth it (I have all her other books)
This collection includes the title story, Everard's Ride, which is a "traditional" fantasy story, a novella really, set in the english countryside. A boy and his sister get lost on a magical island near their home, and get caught up in political intrigue at a medieval court. This story is the centerpiece of the collection. The others are good, but shorter-- this one is really special--I found it thrilling, actually. I would say it's about a YA level.
Also included in this collection is"the True State of Affairs", set in Dalemark--but told in a completely different style from the Dalemark stories-very very dark--very much for the adult reader (I don't mean because of subject matter, rather, because of the mood and subtleties). It's written in the first person, by a woman imprisoned in a fortress due to a case of mistaken identity. It is different from anything else I have read by DWJ, and is absolutely perfectly done. (of course)

Just thought I'd write this in case there were any other DWJ fans wondering what's in this book. I liked it very much.

Hidden Turnings
Hidden Turnings, edited and assembeled by Diana Wayne-Jones, is a teriffic collection of short stories mostly in the science-fiction, or fantasy genre.This book contains short stories such as Fifty-Fafty, The Master (my personal favorite), and many more.I only gave this book three stars because although I liked Hidden Turnings, it was an average book, with not many exceptional features.It wasn't written that well, and I found that many of the characters lacked emotion, making some of the stories somewhat borring.This book was also just a bit below my reading and interrest level.It was probably for the 10 to 13 year old age group.
Over all though, this was a good book and you should consider reading it. ... Read more

Decent collection of stories and book excerpts
This is a pretty good collection of stories. More than half the "stories" are actually book excerpts, which I personally find annoying (though others might disagree), but you can tell the editor has great taste by the books she chose: The Phantom Tollbooth, The Silver Chair, and Five Children and It, among others. Isaac Asimov has a great story in here, though it's a bit off-color for such a young readership, and the last story, "What The Cat Told Me," is vintage Jones and very good. ... Read more
