Product Description
James Joyce's Portrait of an Artist is one of the most significant literary works of the twentieth century, and one of the most innovative. Its originality shocked contemporary readers on its publication in 1916 who found its treating of the minutiae of daily life as indecorous, and its central character unappealing. Was it art or was it filth?
The novel charts the intellectual, moral, and sexual development of Stephen Dedalus, from his childhood listening to his father's stories through his schooldays and adolescence to the brink of adulthood and independence, and his awakening as an artist.Growing up in a Catholic family in Dublin in the final years of the nineteenth century, Stephen's consciousness is forged by Irish history and politics, by Catholicism and culture, language and art. Stephen's story mirrors that of Joyce himself, and the novel is both startlingly realistic and brilliantly crafted, not to mention that it is one of the founding texts of Modernism and the precursor of the acclaimed Ulysses.
For this edition Jeri Johnson, an eminent Joyce scholar, has written an introduction and notes which together provide a comprehensive and illuminating appreciation of Joyce's artistry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Crafted Novel of Intellect & Rebellion
Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man follows Stephen Dedalus from his childhood through his coming of age.Joyce chronicles Stephen's sexual, emotional, and intellectual awakening as the novel progresses. As Stephen ages, Joyce's writing style evolves with him, increasing in complexity to reflect Stephen's increasing awareness and intelligence. As Stephen expands his mind, it brings him into conflict with the Catholic ideals he was raised with, as well as challenging his notions of nationality.

There are far too many layers to this novel to really do it justice in an Amazon review and I'll save everyone from reading another English lit essay.Suffice to say that I found this novel challenging to read, but ultimately rewarding in its well-crafted prose and thought-provoking ideas.Stephen's grapples with his faith, his country, with love, and ultimately with expression were intriguing and compelling. For it's simple beginnings, the novel contains description and passion that sears the page. For example, the accounts of hell in the third section alone were so terrifyingly rendered that I had nightmares the evening I finished reading it.

This is one of the most powerful pieces of literature I've read in some time.I highly recommend it to any one who is or has been a seeker of knowledge and what is true. This book may not have the answers, but it's an interesting portrayal of the journey of the mind of one man.

2-0 out of 5 stars VERY poorly edited version by Soho Publishing
Buy another version--Soho's is shameful. Not only is it a non-critical edition with no annotations whatsoever (which is fine--that's what I ordered, after all), but the sloppy editing throughout the entire book is so bad it's actually distracting. A high school editing staff could have done a better job.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you don't like this book, you don't like reading.
Joyce's prose is the closest thing to a hybrid of narration and poetry that I've experienced.I read this when I was in my twenties and have never fully recovered.Bliss.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely terrible.
First of all, this is not really a stream of consciousness novel. Ulysses is. This is a semi-autobiographical novel detailing the rather uninteresting youth of a turn of the century Irish boy. Perhaps if I had lived at that time this book would be more meaningful, but in 2010 there is nothing controversial about doubting the infallibility of the Catholic church or the existence of God. This question is one of the main themes of the book, as well as a sort of semi-existentialist quest for the boy to define himself as an artist or whatever. Well, the existentialist debate has been better offered by superior authors from Dostoevsky to Camus, and Joyce falls flat here. The other main subject which Joyce attempts to invoke is some of the political divisions in Ireland. He uses a few characters to try and personify the rivaling political factions of the nation at that time. However, this attempt is short-lived, and it also falls flat.
The one gimmick Joyce used which I found mildly interesting was the use of different language as the boy grows older. So the book starts off with some laughable dribble about a "moocow" and a "nicens little boy named baby tuckoo," and ends with Joyce trying to parody the "Hail Mary" (again, the played-out religious themes).
Did I mention how boring this book is? Nothing of interest happens. Terrible book. Avoid at all costs. Read Nabokov instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars The flight from family, nationality and religion
In PAAYM we have the artist-hero,given a mythical name,Dedalus. There is really only one character,Stephen himself, and we see the world through his consciousness, other characters only impinge upon his mind. The girl,E.C., whom Stephen watches on the beach provides him with the epiphany that determines him to be an artist..There is an arrogance to the title, the mythicisation, the ambition:"to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race".But this is accepted by the reader who has been taken through the developing stages of his consciousness.Stephen becomes Daedalus, the master-craftsman who in his daring and ambition partook of the Promethean.

Joyce gives a precise portrait of the artist as a young man, with the tension between his ambition and what,in the novel,he has actually achieved:the novel as dramatic poem.Like the `God of creation',Joyce is quite outside this and`remains within or behind or beyond or above his handiwork, invisible, refined out of existence, indifferent, paring his finger-nails.'There is a struggle against forces-family,Church and state-that threaten to stifle his development.Concomitant with the movement outward from Ireland,is the movement downward into myth.On a superficial level Stephen is dissociating himself;on a deeper level he is becoming a creature of myth. This decision-systemization-led onto Ulysses.Stephen Daly became Stephen Dedalus.Joyce was determined to emerge from the groove of previous literature.

He gives the picture of infant consciousness, with tastes, touches and smells all distinct if not yet understood. The narrative is not sequential but a hodgepodge of memories due to Stephen's fever, early schooldays, holidays at home, rendered discontinuously and with intensity. The great injustice inflicted by Father Dolan makes Stephen a victim, who becomes heroic, whose protest against unjust pandying at a Jesuit school is a prelude to larger protests against Church and State.Joyce makes his (and modernism's) 1st employment of interior monologue, the stream-of-consciousness technique, moving through a range of more complex styles, which chronicle the development of his consciousness and culminates in meditations on the aesthetics of Aristotle and Aquinas and a commitment to an art based on`silence, exile and cunning'.The novel becomes a manifesto for the task of Ulysses.

The novel brings out well that his rebellion against Irish life and R/C religion did not stop their deep influence, substituting art for religion;and turning ideas of mass and substantiation into the `epiphany' of literature, everyday life into art:'the spiritual eye seeks to adjust its vision to an exact focus'.Passionate intellectual argumentation has remarkable emotional force. He renders the'luminous silent stasis of aesthetic pleasure..the supreme quality of beauty, the clear radiance of the aesthetic image..arrested by its wholeness..fascinated by its harmony..the enchantment of the heart'.That Joyce lived out the conclusion of the novel's `non serviam' vow increases his achievement of the non-juring exile of extreme self sufficiency in his encounter with `the reality of experience'.Because he is dealing with the prurient Victorian world of his adolescence the preoccupation with guilt and fear and growing sexuality play a major part:a sermon on hell,a visit to a prostitute, masturbation.

Joyce's poems are like songs,he had an auditory imagination,he was a singer:Joyce lived in a world of words, words as sounds, divorced that is from meaning, using verbal association. There is the hypnotic use of repetition, chains of association are built up,words of sensory significance deliberately used to work on our subconscious minds. The relationship develops between author and object rather than author and reader. This equates the prose with the experience or replaces the experience with the prose. This makes the work self-conscious,deliberate,stylistically akin to Flaubert. He captures subjective experience through language rather than the actual experience through prose narrative(Cf.Stephen Hero).I prefer this and Dubliners to Ulysses.

Product Description

Winner of the National Book Award and in print for more than thirty years, them ranks as one of the most masterly portraits of postwar America ever written by a novelist. Including several new pages and text substantially revised and updated by the author, this Modern Library edition is the most current and accurate version available of Oates' seminal work.

A novel about class, race, and the horrific, glassy sparkle of urban life, them chronicles the lives of the Wendalls, a family on the steep edge of poverty in the windy, riotous Detroit slums. Loretta, beautiful and dreamy and full of regret by age sixteen, and her two children, Maureen and Jules, make up Oates' vision of the American fam-ily--broken, marginal, and romantically proud. The novel's title, pointedly uncapitalized, refers to those Americans who inhabit the outskirts of society--men and women, mothers and children--whose lives many authors in the 1960s had left unexamined. Alfred Kazin called her subject "the sheer rich chaos of American life." The Nation wrote, "When Miss Oates' potent, life-gripping imagination and her skill at narrative are conjoined, as they are preeminently in them, she is a prodigious writer."

In addition to the text revisions, this--new edition contains an Afterword by the author and a new Introduction by Greg Johnson, Oates' biographer and the author of two monographs on the work of Joyce Carol Oates. ... Read more

This busted in half when I opened it! Wonderful novel, though. Wonderfully written novel, though. I bought a new one as to not read the busted in half one. I read all of the new one.

5-0 out of 5 stars oates, them
The reviewers above miss a central point in this, her greatest novel. How can we give our individual lives and the society about us structure? Can we assume life has a strucutre that will make itself apparent to us in time? And what of the people who seek to destroy social order, who revel in chaos?

5-0 out of 5 stars Acute exposure of fragility beneath hard, shielding façades
Apathy is a weapon. Not speaking about their disappointments - as working class kids traditionally aren't supposed to do - made the victims of silence terribly alone and isolated. As Maureen and Jules grow up they learn to use apathy themselves as a weapon with which they can obliterate the outside world, disconnect themselves from all that makes the world ugly and incomprehensible. Alienation nearly kills the Children of Silence when they're forced to conform and to submit to performing tedious, repetitious routines in school day in, day out, taught not to imagine a different world but to accept this one, this supposedly concrete and unchangeable reality of poverty.

Apathy is a way to disconnect, to do away with an imposed reality and an excruciatingly slow moving time. They use the same weapon that once was used on them, and they begin to understand why their parents avoided intimacy and connection on an emotional level. Expressing feelings and the intimacy and connection that follows such expression makes shared dreams arise. And to share dreams is dangerous, because the world tears them down, crushes dreams and makes Maureen want to die in the powerlessness and futility of it all. The world indeed is a vampire sent to drain (1). As Jules and Maureen themselves are betrayed and see what apathy can do to the hopeful, to those who wish nothing more than to have real, authentic love, they realize they aren't innocent themselves and have no one to blame. If no one taught them to be true to a higher ideal, if they have no faith and no moral imperative to live up to, then how can they expect the ones they love not to hurt them? And, as the weapon backfires on them, they realize that they too are victims and that they have become as heartless as their parents.

As they meet apathy now, young adults, Jules searching for guidance and rescue, Maureen seeking escape and refuge in passive serfdom of middle class life going nowhere fast, they struggle to cope with the utter silence and the void of feelings. Jules refuses to make this his inescapable destiny and become as lost and broken as their parents, while Maureen denounces and runs away from the thought of her family and past. She withers in denial (2). She stares into a mirror and sees nothing staring back at her and then she knows what they have done to her and what she in turn will do to her children if she doesn't somehow break the curse.

Jules and Maureen feel the pain of not having their expectations met and know that their suffering is real but don't know how to communicate it because of their parents and their own submission to silence. And so they pray for someone to open up and be vulnerable, to bare their inmost desires and dreams. The Children of Silence scream to tear a hole in the wall separating them from truth and authenticity. They indeed wish for someone to speak the truth back to them and be everything they wished themselves to be but can't be by themselves, so they scream Come save me from the awful sound of nothing (3).

This review used lines from songs (1. Bullet with butterfly wings, 2. Disarm, 3. Quiet) written by Billy Corgan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Realism stretched like putty
Perhaps the greatest trick which Oates performs in Them is her ability to take emotions which human beings have been examining for centuries, like love, and pull them apart, elongate them to such an extent that they are barely recognizable from their pedestrian definitions. There is an excruciating, unrelenting quality to Them, and it is found in this inscrutable ability to take the banal and make it rich, painful, grotesque. This novel of great pain laid bare is not so much an exercise in exposing human universals, but showing how distressingly small human concerns are;in the great sweep of events little people remain little, no matter how large their emotions.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only kind of fiction that is real
As writer Joyce Carol Oates states in the introduction of her "them", this book is `the only kind of fiction that is real'. The gimmick in this book is that she tells the story as if it were reality. According to her early note, the narrative is based on some letters she received from a former student. This so-called student wasn't a good writer, but she thought her story worthy telling therefore her teacher assumed the task.

The student is Maureen Wendal, one of `them'. The narrative is about her and her mother, Loretta, and her older brother Jules. Oates follows a couple of years in the lives of these people. In their lives there are many ingredients that could turn the novel into a soap opera -- rape, love, lies, prostitution --, but this writer does not deals with the cheap prose. Her sentences are crafted, and her characters thoroughly developed, making all of them very real.

Political and historic background lend the book more relevance. The famous Detroit riots in the middle 60's are part of these lives. Oates seems to be interested in the subtle relationship between reality and fiction. She borrows `real' lives to construct fiction that has as basis real facts that change the lives of her characters.

As she points out in her introduction, nothing in the novel was exaggerated in order to increase the drama. Not matter if her work is real or not -- this is not her point, after all -- the fact is that she wrote an incredibly good book populated with fictional characters that read like real. And this is more than any reader can long for.

Excerpt: Jean-Louis "Jack" Kerouac (pronounced ; March 12, 1922 October 21, 1969) was an American novelist and poet. Alongside William S. Burroughs and Allen Ginsberg, he is considered a pioneer of the Beat Generation, and a literary iconoclast. Kerouac is recognized as an important writer both for his spontaneous style and for his content which consistently dealt with such topics as jazz, promiscuity, Buddhism, drugs, poverty, and travel. His writings have inspired several prominent writers, including Hunter S. Thompson, Tom Robbins, Thomas Pynchon, Lester Bangs, Will Clarke, Richard Brautigan, Ken Kesey, Haruki Murakami, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, and writers of the New Journalism. His works were sometimes shunned as "slapdash", "grossly sentimental", and "immoral". Kerouac did manage to acquire underground celebrity status and was, for a time, labeled as a progenitor of the Hippie movement. Disenchanted with mainstream America and never having gotten over the death of his older brother when he was four years old, Kerouac lost his struggle with alcoholism and died aged 47 in 1969. Since his death, and thanks in large part to the efforts of editor Ann Charters, Kerouac's literary prestige has steadily grown over the years, with several previously unpublished works surfacing, and all of his books being in print today, among them: On the Road, The Dharma Bums, Mexico City Blues, The Subterraneans, Desolation Angels, Visions of Cody and Big Sur. "She was found in darkness - the bruised, comatose first-grader who would never wake up to tell anyone which of the two adults in the small, filthy Greenwich Village apartment had beaten her." On January 30 1989, Joel Steinberg was found guilty of first-degree manslaughter after a twelve-week, nationally televised trial in which his former lover, Hedda Nussbaum, was the star prosecution witness. In this book, Joyce Johnson examines the mysteries still surrounding Lisa Steinberg's death and also addresses the painful question of how she lived, in an account of what is known about her last days and hours, when no one acted to save her. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars The True Hedda Nussbaum
I followed this trial (as I did the Aileen Wournos and Andrea Yates cases) in great detail.

It is is so disingenuous for these armchair experts to twist/besmirch/malign/denegrate victims when they really have little or no knowledge as to the complexities surrounding many of these cases.

Having seen so many women be subjected, forced into battered wife syndrome situations, I have a far better understanding about what many of these unfortunate women go through; the physical, mentalsuffereing - scarring of their psyches - the worthlessness.

I'm so sick of listening to pseudo-intellectual feminists - along with their misogynist male counterparts all rush to judgement in attacking women who have fallen through the cracks of those empty almighty promises of equality and justice.

No-one is discounting/exonerating the viciousness and sheer evil perpetrated upon innocent Lisa; but to ignor or try and deny that what Hedda endure was in any way less than what Lisa was subjected to, is grossly unfair... if not ignorant ...

Unfortunately, there are far too many out-dated/archaic/draconian laws on the books and worthless judges that still see/treat women as second class citizens - merely seen as expendable chattels.

And we thought that Megan's Law was going to be implemented and respected; where girls and their mothers would be prorected - safe-guarded against the barbaric violence that hapless men venge upon their weaker sexes ... beings ...

4-0 out of 5 stars Steinberg should've been sentenced to death/Nussbaum should
be in prison for life (abused woman or not).

My heart aches terribly after reading this book.I'd hoped I'd feel differently. Because of all of the media and hype I was hoping there was some 'normal' explanation to this tragedy.Maybe a typical story of a battered woman who coulnd't respond.

BUT, this couple were sado-masochist, crack-heads who participated in cults and sexual perversity.I hoped I would read a simplier explanation of Lisa's death. This book didn't help my phyche at all; it made my pain worse.

I kiss my child much harder every night after she's asleep after reading this 'tale of hell'.

My prayers go on for Lisa.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sick people
I agree with the author that Hedda Nussbaum is just as guilty of Lisa's abuse and death as was Joel Steinberg. There are some facts about the birth mother that were incorrect(See her own book "I Wish You Didn't Know My Name" by Michele Laudners).Over all, "What Lisa Knew" is a good book.It gives insight to a very sick, disturbed man.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Worse Than a Beater
This book is excellent. The story behind it all is totally repulsing and I believe that Joel Steinberg AND Hedda Nussbaum should have been put behind bars for their lack of love that they gave to Mitchell and Lisa and thehome that they raised their children in...I'm sure that homeless peopleraise their children in a more sanitary fashion.

Product Description
HEAVEN and EARTH: How it all Works by Tonya Gamman not only confirms and validates near-death experiences, it goes far beyond them. It is the chronicle of two lives, life in heaven in between, and over a year of daily lessons in the etheric retreats under the tutelage of a master teacher. The story begins with the tragic last days of Tonya's previous life in 19th-century Ireland. She describes heaven in exquisite detail and explains the major activities souls engage in: healing, resting and reflecting, reviewing their last life, planning their next life, and preparing for reembodiment.Tonya describes how a returning soul visits old haunts on Earth before entering a baby's body. When she enters her body, she says "I'm like a pilot checking out my plane before take off, I activate systems and organs that are not working at full capacity." Soon after being born, Tonya forgets about heaven and her plans for this life. But when she is baptized at 11, she reconnects to the feeling of unconditional love, peace, and freedom that is heaven and to a presence whom she calls God.Six months later, after practicing a meditation involving focusing on the point between waking and sleeping, she enters a state of heightened awareness and sees the presence as a being of light with brown eyes that are soft, deep and full of compassion. His name is Kuthumi.Kuthumi takes Tonya in her soul body to etheric cities of light in the heaven world, forlessons about life that last over a year. Tonya condenses the most important lessons she remembers into 2 chapters. Thanks to these lessons, she successfully navigates past pitfalls such as smoking, drugs and alcohol and accelerates her education, enrolling in college at 16.At 19, she begins reading the lives of saints and finds a picture of Kuthumi, but the caption reads "Saint Francis of Assisi." Thus begins of her search for answers that will take her through 33 more years of her life in a future sequel. ... Read more
