2-0 out of 5 stars Okay
Crockett Johnson's Barnaby is one of the greatest things ever published, by far the greatest graphic novel of all time (at least 30 years before anybody else was doing them). This sequel is much inferior.Johnson has one joke that he seems to find worth hammering home in a thousand different ways in this book.If you absolutely loved Barnaby this book will provide you with some lovable moments, but only dyed-in-the-wool Barnaby fanatics should bother with this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book for children 3 to 78 years old aprox.
This is a very nice story about a boy that draws what he encounters, it is easy to read for the beginner readers and the illustrations are very nice. The library binding is very strong and it has a hard cover.
Este es un cuento de Harold, un niño que con su crayón morado va dibujando lo que se va encontrando. Resuelve los problemas que se le presentan.Es ideal para los que comienzan a leer solos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tan encantador en español como en inglés (Just as charming in Spanish)
Even grownups enjoy this imaginative story of a boy whose purple crayon takes him on a magical journey. The Spanish translation retains all the magic of the English original, such that a friend in his 20s became glued to the book when I first brought it to his attention. Caution: Although the story is understandable to children as young as 3 or 4, it is longer than it looks! Begin the story only if you are prepared to read for a little while, but once you do, you'll enjoy the trip.

My mother teaches preschool to mostly Spanish-speakers, so this was a must have.A very good translation of the beloved English classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars So simple it's almost stupid, but really funny and charming at the same time
This is a strange little book.On one hand, the story's so simple that it's almost stupid, on the other hand it's charming and that simple-stupidness has always struck me as really, really silly and funny.I suppose it matters more what kids think of it, though. Not so much what I think of it.My kids both think it's wonderful. So, 5 stars for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Learned to Read with This Book
When I was a young child, I owned this book. I won't say it was my all-time favorite, but I did like it. Today, it holds a special place in my heart, because I learned to read with this book.

Children don't always need the busiest, most colorful and rhyming book out there. Its simplicity is what made me think that I could master it. My parents had read it to me so much that I quickly learned it by heart. And then I would play with it and pretend I could read it on my own. And finally, one day, as I was play-reading it, it suddenly all came together for me. The words just "clicked" in my mind, like learning to ride a bicycle. I understood how to read!

Today, I am a mother to a 2 year old voracious 'play-reader' and I can't wait to get this book for my child. Perhaps someday the words will "click" for her too!

1-0 out of 5 stars don't believe the hype - keep your $
I read several reviews of this book and also saw that it was featured in a parenting magazine as a great book for toddlers.I insisted on getting it for my 2 1/2 year old son for Easter, and I searched everywhere for it.Waste.Of.Time.

This book is so dull, and my son is not captivated by it at all.Half of the pages read "And he sat.""And he sat.""And he sat."Honestly, I could make up a story with so few words, drag it out longer, skip the illustrations, and save my money. The story is not a good one, and the illustrations did little to inspire my toddler.I will not be recommending this to anyone.

Order took two weeks (14 business days exactly) to receive and arrived damaged. Now I need to return the damaged book that arrived after I needed to give it as a gift and wait for a credit. Never heard back from vendor if they were going to try to find a replacement. Less than thrilled with this vendor / shopping experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every bit as good as The Carrot Seed!
A year ago I went looking for this book, which turned out to be long out of print. In fact, the very knowledgeable bookstore staff I spoke to doubted its very existence! The Carrot Seed is a beloved classic, but its close sibling The Happy Egg had been strangely forgotten.I'm glad to see it back.

The two books are by the same husband-and-wife team, and share a natural kinship in their gentle rhythms, simple illustrations and surprisingly stirring, life-affirming conclusions. The Happy Egg is a book I can gladly read over and over, and over, to my toddler. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I, too, loved it as a kid.
I was amazed to see, in Barnes & Noble (don't tell Amazon...), a cartoon boy by the name of Harold who looked an awful lot like Barnaby. When I saw that the name of the author of the Harold stories was Crockett Johnson, I had a feeling of being in a time warp. Both "Barnaby" and the equally delightful sequel "Barnaby and Mr. O'Malley" were purchased by my family in 1943-1944, three and two years before my birth. They tell of the adventures of Barnaby and his cigar-smoking imaginary fairy godfather, Jackeen J. O'Malley, in WWII suburban USA. O'Malley's cigar doubles as his magic wand, but he usually breaks it when he flies in through Barnaby's bedroom window and crashes to the floor. Offering a glimpse into wartime life (with blackouts, victory gardens, and scrap metal collection in support of the war effort), the stories are imaginative and funny, a far cry from the simplistic small-children's stories about Harold. I think I'm just going to re-read them now.

There's nothing Harold can't create with his purplecrayon--and that's just why children have loved his magical world fordecades. Crockett Johnson wrote several other books about Harold afterthe original Harold andthe Purple Crayon in 1955, each one tracing differentthemes--from Harold at the circus to Harold on Mars. This time theimaginative young artist takes his purple crayon on a search for aChristmas tree. He finds himself at the North Pole just in time tohelp Santa who is snowed in with his reindeer, his sleigh, and all thetoys.Harold's purple crayon to the rescue! He draws his ownsolutions, solving both Santa's problem and his own. This would be adandy Christmas gift wrapped up with a big pad of paper... and apurple crayon, of course. 5-0 out of 5 stars harold
it is a charming book to read to children and help them recognize imagination. it is lovely.

5-0 out of 5 stars a parent's delight
I used to love reading this book to the kids, before the baby became a toddler (see below).

The drawings are clear. That little Harold is so darling -- all head and crayon and cuteness. The stories take Harold on adventures that always end safely at home in bed.

They are a fun way to imagine... what comes next? When we make up family stories, sometimes we try to find new directions to take a story, especially when one gets sidetracked (by silliness, grossness, etc. -- I have boys). These Harold stories do exactly the same thing:when Harold gets stuck, or nervous, or in danger, he just imagines his way out of it.

The books are very clever. The illustrations are basically line drawings, but they convey the story perfectly.I like this collection because it has 4 Harold stories together.

Anyway, my youngest went through a book-ripping phase about a year ago, so we put up all the books with pages and kept the board books down at his level.Somehow, Harold got misplaced. We got it out again this week, and to my joy, yesterday the 6-year old was reading it to the 3-year-old.They were laughing and giggling about the book, and I fell in love with the story all over again.

Awesome book.

***updated*** this book includes four stories:

Harold and the Purple Crayon
Harold's Fairy Tale
Harold's Trip to the Sky
Harold's Circus

5-0 out of 5 stars Great books. Amusing for parents and kids.
The kid draws all the things around him that make up the story. It's a great imaginative book. And it's so funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful, imaginative tale
When I encountered this book for the first time, I lamented the fact that I was unaware of it when my daughter was young. She would have loved it. Harold is a toddler with a magic purple crayon. With it, he can make anything he wants and engage in the most imaginative and creative adventures. When Harold needs something, he simply draws it.
Some of Harold's adventures are flying in a rocket, landing on another planet, meeting an alien, riding a shooting star back home and eating a bowl of hot oatmeal. The adventures are not structured in the sense that the next event is largely unpredictable, which is consistent with the wandering that a child's mind will do.
