Product Description
One of the funniest books ever written, "Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow" remains fresh and invigorating though written over a hundred years ago. Jerome K. Jerome writes of many strange things--almost forgotten; luminescent memories of aunties and uncles who were old fashioned and gracious, walks in the park and net curtains and butterfly cakes and all those things that have long since passed away. Though funny and very clever, "Idle Thoughts by an Idle Fellow" contains some of the most poignant and lovely imagery you will ever encounter. Readers will never be the same. Nothing compares with Jerome K. Jerome's evocations of lost days, the gentle ghosts of boys he knew playing in the fields, saucers of milk for beloved pets, the haunted look of infants gazing into the infinite distance on house steps of villages whose names have been consigned to forgetfulnesss. Jerome K. Jerome had the uncanny knack of looking at life in the l800's and unknowingly applying it to our life of today, a hundred years later. Though sometimes uproariously funny and sometimes tearfully sad, the book is always true. Jerome's chapter on dogs and cats is enough to make you roll down the hall. Also not to be overlooked, his dedication in the front is to his friend, his PIPE. Oh, to be able to look forward to more of his writings, but, alas, only three items were printed, it seems. A must in anyone's library for pure joy and insight. ... Read more

Just what it promised!Completely happy.Would definitely buy from this seller again. Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Idle thoughts of a genius
When most people say "God bless the clowns" they could hardly think of Jerome, and yet...

In this book are some of the funniest things I think that have ever been written at all, ever. I encountered this book in my Dad's collection when I was eleven and I am sure that I spent that summer long ago utterly entranced. There is nothing here that is an obscurity of a hundred years ago, it's all fresh and invigorating, though there are many strange things, almost forgotten; luminescent memories of aunties and uncles who were old fashioned and gracious, walks in the park and net curtains and butterfly cakes and all those things that have long since passed away.

I think that ... perhaps I modelled myself on Jerome. There was something splendid and sorrowful about a piece by Vaughan Williams that I heard recently in the Proms, and I thought of this book, and how perhaps time play tricks with us, not repeating those wonderful things of so ago, but the odd resonance still appears, apparitions of all our prehistories.

This book IS funny and very clever - but I must warn you, gentle reader, that it contains some of the most poignant and lovely imagery that I have ever encountered, you will never be the same afterwards, and nothing at all compares with his evocations of lost days, the gentle ghosts of boys he knew playing in the fields, saucers of milk for beloved pets, the haunted look of infants gazing into the infinite distance on house steps on villages whose names have been consigned to forgetfulnesss.

It is profoundly beautiful, quite ridiculous in parts, very moving, often quite melancholy, and shows evidence of a very lively, gentle and very compassionate man.

In these arid and dusty days? Oh, don't even ask!

Absolutely and totally recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spontaneous Grins and Irrepressible Guffaws
Jerome K Jerome is a treasure from the past. This ranging monologue keeps surprising the listener with entertaining insights that can still zing one with the ring of truth, and boggle one with bawdy attitudes that reflect an altogether different age. Warning: some chapters may "scandalize" an uptight PC prude. LOL!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun read
This book is funny but slightly mysoginistic.Jerome has a unique skill at human observations but not all of the essays are evenly readable. There were two or three that were very uncomfortable and bitter.Still overall its a great read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Humorous,Witty and Thought-provoking
In English literature, humour is always a tame but sharp instrument to get at things which otherwise be poisons to be consumed by a body. over the depths of time, writers have forever employed the various designs of humour and subtle sarcasms to dart their disdain at the numerous worrying sides of the socirty. In "Pride and Prejudice" for instance,Jane Austen pokes at the gentry stratum in an overtone of hilarisity and witty ironies. a compatible mechanism is employed by Mark Twain in "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and by Charles Dickens in "nicholas Nickleby" and co by Monsieur Jerome.

At the heart of Lerome Klapka Jerome's compilation of humorous essays titled "The Idle Thoughts Of An Idle Fellow" rsides a vociferous thrill of fun and joviality that often gets moulded into criticism of the eternal absurdities of human nature. In fourteen intricate essays, the author of "Three Men in a Boat(To say nothing of the Dog!),itself a marvellous and classic novel, explores thevarious dimensions of life and provides a perfect reflection of life in his essays. indeed the quinessential theme of art is to mirror life in imaginary colours,to speak about life through the illusory characters. Jerome K. Jerome's essays are direct and invoke a conversational beat and as the reader jumps from one topic to another,he actually does so in terms of the myriad facets of society.

"On Being Idle" is a great way to start the journey. Excerpts from the author's personal life tingled by meanderings away from the theme takes the reader on a voyage that finds parallel ideas in other essays. The next offering "On Being in Love" is one daring foray into the realm of womanhood and the next,"On Being in the Blues" is deeply soaked in pathos and invokes lofty diction. It perceives agony and sorrow both through the personal and the general perspectives. "On Memory" is an exemplar of marvellous nostalgia as the author takes on a ride back into the dark corridors of time. In this,Jerome K. Jerome encaptures memories and yearns for those bittersweey bygone days. "Even the sadness that is past seems sweet",he writes and goes on to relive the past in words. the philosophical touch here is at its acme,a gradual uphill climb that had been gradually gathering force.

In "On Vanity and Vanities" and "On Furnished Apartments",the writer applies cunning euphemisms birdered on sly allegories, transmutating into pride and furniture respectively in each case to higher terms. "On Babies" is more like a disconcern from Jerome K. Jeome towards the fuss that people make over babies and is replete with an undertone of life's inevitable end---death. The other esays in the book---"On Being Hard Up","On Getting on in the World","On the Weather","On Cats and Dogs","On Being Shy","On Eating and Drinking" and "On Dres and Deportment"---all are sketches on common, explained yet undefined attributes of life. in them,as well as in others, the abilit to tell stories so refinely and in so unique a fashion keeps the reader engaged in his work and keeps on wondering how the writer moces astray from the chosen topic, explores the bigger landscape and then springs back to the original theme in a manner that is astonishing in a vast degree.

"The Idle Thoughts of an Idle fellow" is no doubt a great work of literature but on a number of occasions it does fall short of the level of humour and fun that Jerome K. Jerome had reached in "Three Men in a Boat" and "Three Men in a Bummel". Sometimes you're left irritated by the writer going off-track and sometimes the comedy becomes tpoo ordinary. but even so,the essays never go deep into social scars and restrain themselves on the fringes of emotions and sentimentality. the book's not dark,it's not dramatic and it's not tragic but it's a vivid display of the common and unconventional things in life in an uncommon and unconventional style.

Product Description
Three Men in a Boat is a humorous account by Jerome K. Jerome of a boating holiday on the Thames between Kingston and Oxford. The book was intended initially to be a serious travel guide, with accounts of local history of places along the route, but the humorous elements eventually took over, to the point where the serious and somewhat sentimental passages now seem like an unnecessary distraction to the essentially comic novel. One of the most praised things about Three Men in a Boat is how undated it appears to modern readers. The jokes seem fresh and witty even today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read!
What a pleasure! This book takes you back to time in England where proper gentlemen took a vacation by rowing up, or down, a river.

A real delight.

1-0 out of 5 stars 3 Men in a Boat - to say nothing about the Dog
I thought this would be fun, but it's kind of boring for a non-Brit woman. It's probably good for someone out there, though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Riparian Entertainment by Three Stooges
I did not find the kindle version I purchased of this book, so I cannot vouch for this version's formatting, but the story is entertaining. It's an English version of A Walk in the Woods with a river setting. There are enough laugh-out-loud moments that I can give it 4 stars (there are a few 'snore' moments, too). And there were a couple parts where I was a bit lost, since I am not familiar with boating lingo, but I was able to continue and get the idea.(I thought "Bow" was one of the character's names for awhile.)

I really enjoyed finding locations in the book and following the journey up river with online maps.It was fun to see satellite images of the places as the book progressed.

I would recommend this book if you are looking for a light read about three guys that don't really know what they are doing but won't admit it.The main character is full of himself, but if you don't mind laughing at him and the situations these guys get in to, you will have a few hours of good reading. This would be a great read on a rainy day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely hilarious
You'll never read a book this funny written before the 20th century. The world needs more books like this. To the person who said it doesn't have much character or excitement, the book is meant to be funny, not exciting. Apparently you didn't get the jokes. For instance, the main character talks to the dog, and the reader is not given any knowledge that that person he is talking to is the dog until you realize he doesn't act like a human. Hilarious if you have a sense of humor.

2-0 out of 5 stars its okay but i suggest you not to read it
it is a plain old book and it doesnt have much excitement so i suggest you not to get it and by the way i didnt think it had much character at all so by this review i hope you dont by it or even look at it!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Three Men Review
This book is a long time favorite of mine and to have it so conveniently packaged on Playaway is such a luxury. Can now laugh out loud even at the gym! Would like to see more of the David Case(records under several names) recordings available on Playaway. If you haven't encountered this book in ANY format---do so quickly----you are missing a treat and a world of happy memories.

2-0 out of 5 stars Re-read "Three Men in a Boat" instead
After reading Three Men in a Boat (a five-star for me), I was eager for this one. What a disappointment...
Maybe only three pages are really funny, the book is simply boring at many passages. I should've reread 3MiaB instead.

<<< SPOILER ALERT >>>

AND, to top it all - Montmorency is missing!

2-0 out of 5 stars Three men - Two stars
Three men in a boat is a fantastic read - the mix of comedy and adventure is perfect and it captures the Victorian era to a 't'.

I therefore had high hopes of the sequel, Three men on the bummel. Unfortunetly I can not praise it. The laugh aloud comedy element has given way to, at beast monologues you smile through, at worst, ones you want to skip. The adventure is in short supply and doesn't sit well with the comedy. A real shame.

5-0 out of 5 stars What could possibly go wrong?
Three Englismen decide to go on holiday in Germany. They plan to take their bicycles; they will travel by train between the major cities and do day trips by bike. What could possibly go wrong?

The answer is EVERYTHING!You will laugh yourself sick.

I'm surprised that this hasn't been made into a film or a TV series; get some of the guys from Monty Python, or the guys who played James, Tristan and Sigfried on "All Creatures Great & Small".

5-0 out of 5 stars Rollicking story of three gentlemen on a cycling tour

Product Description
Martyrs to hypochondria and general seediness, J. and his friends George and Harris decide that a jaunt up the Thames would suit them to a T'. But when they set off, they can hardly predict the troubles that lie ahead with tow-ropes, unreliable weather-forecasts and tins of pineapple chunks not to mention the devastation left in the wake of J.'s small fox-terrier Montmorency. Three Men in a Boat was an instant success when it appeared in 1889, and, with its benign escapism, authorial discursions and wonderful evocation of the late-Victorian clerking classes', it hilariously captured the spirit of its age. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars To say nothing of the dog!
Imagine Bertie Wooster and two of his idiot friends out on a boat... with no Jeeves. That about describes "Three Men in a Boat : To Say Nothing of the Dog," Jerome K. Jerome's enchanting comic novel about three young men (to say nothing of the dog) who discover the "joys" of roughing it.

The three men are George, Harris and the narrator, who are all massive hypochiandriacs -- they find that they have symptoms of every disease in existance (except housemaid's knee). To prop up their failing health, they decide to take a cruise down the Thames in a rented boat, camping and enjoying nature's bounty.

Along with Monty -- an angelic-looking, devilish terrier -- the three friends set off down the river. But they find that not everything is as easy as they expected. They get lost in hedge mazes, end up going downstream without a paddle, encounter monstrous cats and vicious swans, have picnics navigate locks, offend German professors, and generally get into every kind of trouble they possibly can...

Even though it was published more than a century ago, "Three Men in a Boat" remains as freshly humorous as when it was first published. While editor/playwright/author Jerome K. Jerome wrote a lot of other books, this book remains his most famous. And once you've read it, you'll see why.

Jerome's real talent is in finding humor in everyday things, like trying to erect a tent in the woods, getting seasick, or questioning whether it's safe to drink river water. Written in Jerome's dry, goofy prose, these little occurrances become immensely funny. One of the funniest parts of the book is when the boys listen to a fishermen telling of his prowess, only to accidently knock down his record-breaking stuffed fish.... and discover it's made out of plaster. Oops.

But Jerome takes a break from the humor near the end, when the boys find a drowned woman floating in the river. And here he becomes solemn and quietly compassionate: "She had sinned - some of us do now and then - and her family and friends, naturally shocked and indignant, had closed their doors against her."

But back on the funny stuff. The capstone on all this humor is the "three men." These guys are basically pampered Victorian aristocrats, who have a romantic yearning for the great outdoors. You'll be laughing at them and with them, as they struggle through the basics of boating and camping.

Funny, wacky and creepily true to life, "Three Men in a Boat" is an enduring comic classic in the vein of PG Wodehouse. Not to mention the dog!

4-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant piece of Victorian dalliance.
J.K. Jerome was one of those hard working writers who became an overnight success after years of rejection. His best known work, Three Men in a Boat, took a bath with the critics. They saw him as a jumped up clerk writing "threepenny shockers" and not a serious novelist.

The people of Victorian Britain did not agree with the critics, and bought this book in their droves. In contrast to the usual three volume monsters of the day this book is a small and light read. The plot follows the cruise of three friends from London to Oxford in a rowing skiff, but the author charges off on frequent hares to illuminate his tale.

As a result we learn quite a bit about victorian life, the standard of inns, the behaviour of landladies, how to shop, plenty of sound advice on packing, storage, camping, food, dogs, cats, boats and a host of other things.

I somehow doubt I am brave enough to follow the recipe for "Irish Stew", but maybe there are some hardier souls than I out there who are up for the challenge.I did think they were wise not to add in the rat, regardless of how upsetting the dog may have found this discrimination.

The introduction and notes in the Penguin version are also useful for those who want to colour in a little of the background of the author and victorian life, and who don't automatically know who John of Gaunt and Ethelred and Edward the Confessor were and what the Magna Carta was and why it pained John so to sign it.

If Bill Bryson wrote this book it would probably be called "A short history of England from pre-history to the Late Victorian Period". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Three Sillies (and the dog) have fun
Yes, this IS the book Robert Heinlein was referring to in his classic sci-fi book, "Have Space Suit-Will Travel", and the scene with the can of pineapple is even funnier than I would have believed possible. These two books detail the misadventures of three adult? British men as they take vacations from their lives of daily toil (which lives would seem like a vacation to the rest of us). The stories are hilarious; I particularly love the scene in which the dog meets his match is a tough street cat. This is a great fun book to read and re-read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laughed so hard I had to stop reading multiple times
I had never heard of this book - but noticed it in an interview with Jasper Fforde - the Thursday Next writer - when he said it was one of his all time favorites. It is just 160 pages long - published in 1889 - and a big success in Europe and US at the time. Three men and a dog go up/down the Thames from Kingston to Oxford. There is real actual information about the trip and the towns they pass - plus historical interludes - they stop at Magna Carta Island where it was supposedly signed for example. The three are basically wackos - the author's descriptions of the characters - their past escapades - and commentaries on a variety of subjects sneak up on you and leave you gasping for air as you laugh uncontrolable - I can't see how one could read it out loud to an audience.Ther was a second book - in the same edition with the same characters in a bicycle ride thru the Black Forest in Germany - I have't started it yet but will soon when I have calmed down.

4-0 out of 5 stars victoriana
HM the Queen-Empress might well have been amused. I was. There is more than a little of Mark Twain in this traveloguette; Mr Jerome's wit, though properly British of the nineteenth century, somehow calls up memories of the great Clemens' travel tales, specially 'A Tramp Abroad'. No great guffaws here but many smiles. One might call it British humor for those who don't like British humor. If you liked 'Monty Python', well...

5-0 out of 5 stars Guy's nights out
Jerome K. Jerome is a recent and most welcome discovery. The passage of time sometimes pushes excellent authors off onto literary sidings, much as high speed passenger trains do to important but less flashy local trains.Jerome's "Three Men in a Boat" and "Three Men on the Bummel" should not be allowed to be shunted aside.Simply put, this two book in a single volume edition, is fun to read. You don't need specific knowledge of travel in England or Germany to appreciate Jerome's trips with his friends. It does add to the fun, but it is not necessary! You can, however, appreciate the comradeship and comedy of three guys who know each other and each other's foibles only too well, knocking about together on vacation.I've been on these sorts of trips and the scenarios are described to perfection. These stories are exactly what you would want to write about a trip with friends, if you could write as delightfully as Jerome K. Jerome.Highly recommended for just plain fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars A bicycle trip through Germany can be a hoot
Jerome K. Jerome explains in the preface: "There will be no descriptions of towns, no historical reminiscences, no architecture, no morals. Lastly, in this book there will be no scenery. This is not laziness on my part; it is self-control."

Ten years after their journey up the Thames described in the witty Three Men in a Boat - To Say Nothing of the Dog, George, Harris and Jerome take a bicycle tour of Germany. Their goal is the Black Forest. No dog goes along this time, but many animals appear along the route.

Jerome's first book had moments of seriousness and black humor, but was usually light, dead pan and very witty. Here the blackness is more apparent, especially reacting to German people and "their blind obedience to everything in buttons. [If a German] can find a police notice on a tree forbidding him to do something or other, that gives him an extra sense of comfort and security..... From what I have observed of the German character I should not be surprised to hear that when a man in Germany is condemned to death, he is given a piece of rope and told to go home and hang himself."

He is equally harsh on English tourists in Germany. "The Englishman, unable or unwilling to learn a single word of any language but his own, travels purse in hand to every corner of the Continent....The English-speaking man stands amid the strangers and jingles his gold. 'Here,' he cries, 'is payment for all such as can speak English.'"

The word "bummel" is puzzling; the US edition was called Three Men On Wheels. "A 'Bummel'," I explained, "I should describe as a journey, long or short, without an end; the only thing regulating it being the necessity of getting back within a given time to the point from which one started. Sometimes it is through busy streets, and sometimes through the fields and lanes; sometimes we can be spared for a few hours, and sometimes for a few days. But long or short, but here or there, our thoughts are ever on the running of the sand. We nod and smile to many as we pass; with some we stop and talk awhile; and with a few we walk a little way. We have been much interested, and often a little tired. But on the whole we have had a pleasant time, and are sorry when it's over."

Mark Twain described a walking tour of the same area in A Tramp Abroad. Three Men on the Bummel follows the same approach to travel, this time on bicycles, a Victorian craze of the era.

The bicycle talk still resonates: "There may be a better land where bicycle saddles are made out of rainbow, stuffed with cloud; in this world the simplest thing is to get used to something hard. There was that saddle you bought in Birmingham; it was divided in the middle, and looked like a pair of kidneys.... The box you bought it in had a picture on the cover, representing a sitting skeleton--or rather that part of a skeleton which does sit.... We will not go into details; the picture always seemed to me indelicate."

Overall, this book lacks the Thames to create a sense of cohesion. Nevertheless, the clash of cultures has a certain charm, and if you buy a volume containing both books, it will deliver some very enjoyable moments.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book full of humor
"Three men in a boat..." is a wonderful book full of humor. Everybody should have a chance to read it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Still funny after 90 years
After readingConnie Willis' book, "To Say Nothing of the Dog" I became intrigued about part of the source material so I bought this book and it is a hoot.Be aware, this version is about the size of a comic book and only slightly thicker. It does not take a long time to read but it is worth the effort especially if you are a fan of dry, British humor mixed withmore than a little slapstick (I think the Brits did a film version of this for a series called "Ripping yarns").The story is simple, three friends travel up the Thames (for lack of anything else to do) with a dog, Montmorency. The story is focused on observations of the things they men fall prey to on their trip and may require a little research to understand all the jokes as it is specific for the country and time (in some cases). If you enjoy jeeves and Wooster you will like this little story and how can you not try a tale by an author called Lerome Jerome

4-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps Jerome K Jerome was Bill Bryson's grandfather!
If you can imagine a Bill Bryson comic travelogue written by someone with turn-of-the-20th-century Victorian sensibilities and a typical laid back yet biting, caustic British sense of humour ... then you have a pretty good handle on what to expect when you read Jerome K Jerome's classic "Three Men in a Boat"!

While it was originally intended to be a serious travel guide, the story devolved in the writing into an almost slapstick story of the trials and tribulations of three landlubbers who took it into their minds to take a boating holiday on the Thames River.

Even Jerome's establishment of the raison d'être for the river trip is a wonderful example of that brand of humour that is uniquely British. Three mates, each a worse hypochondriac than the other two, are discussing their respective ills, pains, aches and ailments (and this conversation, by the way, establishes the humour for the entire book that ranges somewhere in a triangle bounded by wry grins, charmed smiles and laugh-out-loud hilarity). The mutual decision is reached that taking the air and relaxing on an open boat trip under canvas on the Thames would be good for what ails everybody. Sherlock Holmes would have said, "The game is afoot!".

If the book were a television show, it might be described as a series of loosely related comedy sketches - the difficulties of learning to play a bagpipe; how to get lost on a river that goes in only one direction; how men typically behave (or misbehave) when they've had too much to drink on a camping trip; how to do as little work as possible while ensuring that your buddies are not aware of what's going on, and so on.

Sit back and enjoy! "Three Men in a Boat" has to be the most easy-reading classic you could possibly find. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Three Men In A Boat - Great!

Three Men in a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog) is one of the classic books of British humor. It was first published in 1889. Here is the author's brief summary of Chapter One. "Three Invalids--Sufferings of George and Harris--A victim to one hundred and seven fatal maladies--Useful prescriptions--Cure for liver complaint in children--We agree that we are overworked, and need rest--A week on the rolling deep?--George suggests the River--
Montmorency lodges an objection--Original motion carried by a majority of three to one."This book is only 135 pages long--a quick antidote for our more complex and less humorous times. It can also lead you to Connie Willis' "To Say Nothing of the Dog" Connie is an honored science fiction (with lots of humor) author. I believe she has won more science fiction prizes than any other American author. The dedication of "To Say Nothing of the Dog"
reads "To Robert A. Heinlein Who, in Have Space Suit, Will Travel, first introduced me to Jerome K. Jerome's "Three Men in A Boat, To Say Nothing of the Dog." I wish to all of you who read this book a joyous interlude to life in the 21st century. ... Read more

Product Description
Three Men In A Boat ranks as one of the most amusing and durable books in the English language. Semi-autobiographical it recounts the many adventures and mishaps of George (George Wingrave), Harris (Carl Hentschel), J. (the author) and his remarkable dog, Montmorency during a boating trip on the Thames, in the late nineteenth century. Jerome K. Jerome originally wrote the book as "A Guide to the Thames Valley" with lengthy historical sections lightened by comic interludes. However, his publisher greatly preferred the humour and asked for many of the historical sections to the guide to be cut out. So almost by accident the author wrote a hilarious book of adventures on the Thames. Vignettes include include are the classic story of Harris lost in the Hampton Court maze, the hilarious description of three girls towing a boat, the three men's absurd attempts at putting the cover on their boat for the night and their futile efforts at opening a tin of pineapple. This is a great rollicking fun. ... Read more

Product Description

Nowadays Jerome K. Jerome is mainly known for his comic masterpiece Three Men in a Boat. But he was very much more than a one-book wonder, writing plays, essays, short stories, sketches, and other novels. The Other Jerome K Jerome is, in effect, a Jerome reader, providing a carefully chosen selection from his other works demonstrative of the variety and brilliance of his writing. Including excepts from On the Stage—and Off, The Passing of the Third Floor Back, and Diary of a Pilgrimage, among others, and with an introduction by Martin Green, this is an ideal companion for fans of Three Men in a Boat who want to find out more about its author’s other works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Filled with humor!
I've purchased this collection for 'Three Men in a Boat', but read his other works as well. The 'Three Men in a Boat' is filled with humor. I was laughing til I was crying.

I've purchased over 30 of these complete author collections from this publisher. I have purchased William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Edgar Alan Poe, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Leo Tolstoy, Jule Verne, Oscar Wilde, Alexander Dumas, and a few others. These collections work superbly on the Kindle. Take Mark Twain collection. The collection includes huge number of Mark Twain's works all in one place, searchable and well-organized. If I would have purchased all these books separately, searching for `The Gilded Age' among hundreds of other books on my Kindle would be a nightmare. With Mobile Reference collections, I simply click `Works of Mark Twain', then click Novels> `The Gilded Age'. I can also click `List of works in alphabetical order' > `G' > `Gilded Age'. If I forget the book title but remember that `The Gilded Age' was written by Mark Twain early in his career, I can click on `List of works in chronological order' > (1873) `The Gilded Age'.

If I want another author, say, Charles Dickens, I click `Home' > `Works of Charles Dickens'. If I want Dostoevsky, I click `Works of Fyodor Dostoevsky'. I think this format is perfect for organizing books on the Kindle.

Inside collections, each book has links to chapters and footnotes. The text is nicely formatted and seems to be complete and accurate - something that cannot always be said about inexpensive ebooks. I think these collections are great bargains both in terms of saved money, time, and book organization!
