it captures a bygone era
I am always hesitant to purchase true antique volumes for fear of the condition. I buy books to enjoy, to handle and read. Also I always tend to prefer the colored illustrations. This book however has caused me to reevaluate my position. The volume is lovely. The original black and white Randolph Caldecott engravings capture the spirit of the nineteenth century in a way that nothing else could. The facial expressions are frozen in time with all their nuances and whimsy. I had never realized before how much going back and hand coloring at a later time changed the perspective of the original illustrative art work of this period. As for the stories,they are classic Washington Irving. Though the scene is "merrie old England," they are written by our first truly great American writer. The are a delight to be savored alone or with family and friends. No family's Christmas book collection should be without these stories whether the volumes are old or new. Christmas as it is observed in America today owesno less to Irving than to Dickens, Moore or for that matter, Thomas Nast.Every one else stands on the shoulders of these giants and those who went before them.
