2-0 out of 5 stars Not so hot
This book has 7 short stories written in 1907. Six of them are in first person, with the same narrator. He's a psychologist telling about things that happened to him and his friends. I found only the first 2 stories to be worth reading, the rest are mediocre or worse.

Product Description
The scheme of a banquet to celebrate the initial success of 'Every Other Week' expanded in Fulkerson's fancy into a series. Instead of the publishing and editorial force, with certain of the more representative artists and authors sitting down to a modest supper in Mrs. Leighton's parlors, he conceived of a dinner at Delmonico's, with the principal literary and artistic, people throughout the country as guests, and an inexhaustible hospitality to reporters and correspondents, from whom paragraphs, prophetic and historic, would flow weeks before and after the first of the series. He said the thing was a new departure in magazines; it amounted to something in literature as radical as the American Revolution in politics: it was the idea of self government in the arts; and it was this idea that had never yet been fully developed in regard to it. That was what must be done in the speeches at the dinner, and the speeches must be reported. Then it would go like wildfire.

Several of the ladies admitted that it was the greatest slavery in the world, and that it would be comparative luxury to do one's own work. But they all asked, in one form or another, what were they to do, and Mrs. Strange owned that she did not know. The facetious gentleman asked me how the ladies did in Altruria, and when I told them, as well as I could, they were, of course, very civil about it, but I could see that they all thought it impossible, or, if not impossible, then ridiculous. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
A very interesting and insightful book on life in a future or different earth, as seen from a 'bad' New York City of the future, (except the future takes place around now), and how that future NY is so different then another 'utopia' type place.

I'm a city guy, but the books describes the perfect society so well, that even a city boy could long for it.

I can understand how this book became such a great seller when it was written.I had this book assigned to me on a course about views of the future written in the past.

I'm very glad to have read it, and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Utopian scenarios.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good story but...
I did like the book, but not the reason it was written. It will be considered Utopian, however personally I don't like this form of utopian, very christian, agrarian, etc. However the book makes a great case for the reasons behind this choice and is fascinating in explaining the 'past' of a 'bad America' (that did not happen).

I am glad I read it, as I do enjoy all utopian and distopian novels and films.

Some very good material, good enough that some people actually set up a community based on this novel.Cool!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best descriptions of a perfect utopian America
I'm the first to say that the utopian vision of Howells's is good.In fact, I don't know how a rational person would say otherwise, it is one of the best descriptions of a utopian world that I have ever read. However, having said that, I am not sure if I would wish to live there.I like to think that I am rational, but I am flawed, and wonder if I would be part of the community.Perhaps all of us think this way, and yet wish to be perfect, and perhaps that is why we are drawn to utopian visions.

Through the Eye of the Needle is one of the best descriptions of a perfect utopian America, and I can't find fault with it.If you like utopian or dystopian fiction, I think you will find this one of the best of its kind.I would also like to ask this question: would you like to live in such a place?

5-0 out of 5 stars This utopian book was used to make an actual community in California!
I ordered this book because I enjoy reading both utopian and dystopian works, and I was not at all disappointed Through the Eye, however what intrigued me the most was the fact that an actual town or community was set up in (California where else?) based on this novel. I can understand reality imitating art, but this is really something else, so I had to read the book, since it must have moved so many people (moved them in the real sense!).

I guess, given the time, I could actually see how people could fall in love with the ideals of the book, and it makes sense, in fiction, and perhaps, in our dreams.I think that man can write about utopian ideals makes them possible, at least in our minds they are possible, and Through the Eye does one of the best jobs of making you think it is more than just a dream, put a potential reality.

In that sense the author does a great job.

Product Description
William Dean Howells (1837-1920) was an American realist author and literary critic. He wrote his first novel, Their Wedding Journey, in 1871, but his literary reputation really took off with the realist novel A Modern Instance, published in 1882, which describes the decay of a marriage. His 1885 novel The Rise of Silas Lapham is perhaps his best known, describing the rise and fall of an American entrepreneur in the paint business. His social views were also strongly reflected in the novels Annie Kilburn (1888) and A Hazard of New Fortunes (1890). While known primarily as a novelist, his short story "Editha" (1905) - included in the collection Between the Dark and the Daylight (1907) - appears in many anthologies of American literature. Howells also wrote plays, criticism, and essays about contemporary literary figures such as Ibsen, Zola, Verga, and, especially, Tolstoy, which helped establish their reputations in the United States. He also wrote critically in support of many American writers. It is perhaps in this role that he had his greatest influence. ... Read more
