4-0 out of 5 stars Good PNR- but basically a teaser...
Linda Howard returns to category with this the first installment to the Raintree Trilogy written by herself, Linda Winstead Jones, & Beverly Barton.

I actually kinda liked this one. At least I liked it better than some of her latest books. Published by Silhouette Nocturne, it's all paranormal and that combined with the fact LH is one of my all time favorite comfort reads, made this book far more likable for me than if it had been written by another author.

I really liked Dante the hero's paranormal gift as well as the world they've placed him in. Sure he was a tad overbearing in his alpha maleness, (he basically forced Lorna, the heroine, to do exactly what he wanted for a good portion of this book), but she was feisty enough to deal with him. Besides she has some powers of her own and as soon as she learns how to control them, he won't be steam rolling anymore.

The big drawback for me, was the fact that this one was basically a teaser for the next two installments. (Their story is left hanging at the end of the book!)

These two are pretty hot together and I look forward to reading more about them! 3.5 out of 5

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite of the trilogy
Great book.Exciting, strong believable characters with the emotional charge and magnetism that Linda Howard is famous for. The book doesn't stand alone, but an enjoyable kick-off to the trilogy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book One of Trilogy
Cheating is a bad thing, we all know that. And if you're caught cheating in a casino it can get you killed. Watching Lorna Clay on his video monitors, Dante Raintree knows she's cheating, he just doesn't know how. But he's going to find out. When she steps into his office a fire ignites in him and in the room. Literally. Dante is no ordinary man, he contols fire but when he sees Lorna his reaction causes that control to slip. Lorna feels something too but she just thinks he's weird and incredibly good looking. Figures.

Linda Howard is one of my favorite contemporary authors. She seldom writes a book that I don't find at the very least good and quite often wonderful. This is not her usual format of her more recent books, they tend to be full length novels. So reading a shorter length book (266 pages) I wasn't quite sure what to expect. The story was a little slow going and it took me a while to warm up to the hero and heroine, not good when there's less than 300 pages. There were times when the story got to be a little far fetched but I kept reading. I should warn anyone who plans to read Inferno that it leads right into the next book and the true ending, IMO, doesn't happen until the last book of the trilogy.

This first book in the Raintree trilogy introduces the leader of the clan, Dante Raintree. He is the Dranir, or king, of the Raintree clan. They are group of people with magical powers related to nature. Dante can control fire, His brother Gideon can use the power of electricity and their sister Mercy is a powerful empath. Over 200 years ago the Raintree clan and their rivals the Ansara clan fought a deadly battle that almost annihilated the Ansara. Except for the random, lone Ansara, the Raintree clan members have had little contact with the Ansara. But now there's a chance the Ansara are back and they are trying to kill Dante. Since Lorna is with him she ends up in the line of fire.

Dante runs a casino in Reno and also handles the finances of the clan. I would call Dante a typical alpha male with all the protective, "I know what's best" attitude that alpha males exude. Add to that his ability to use mind compulsion on people to do what he wants and it makes for a man accustomed to getting what he wants. His ability works exceedingly well on Lorna and she doesn't like it one bit. He can basically tell her to "be quiet" or "stay here" and she has to do what he says. Yeah, that would piss me off too.

Lorna Clay knew she was different than most people. Her affinity for numbers has led her to the casinos and helped her make a decent living. She sees numbers in her head, dreams of them. Sometimes their meaning isn't always clear. She also has a very strong sixth sense that she listens to most of the time. When she first met Dante her sixth sense was telling her to run unfortunately her body had other ideas.

I liked Lorna more than Dante. He was just too... bossy. Lorna was a survivor and a loner. She was also funny in her frustration of having to do whatever Dante told her. She let him know exactly what she thought of him. Good for her! He did ease up on the orders and they did get to know each other enough to fall for each other. This took place over the course of about a week. With the page limitations it had to be quick. The love story was kind of meh for me. It just didn't seem like there was much more than sexual attraction between the two. It just happened too fast.

So my overall opinion on this one is that it's not Howard's best work, not even close. I did read the other two books in the trilogy and I would say Raintree: Haunted (book 2) by Linda Winstead Jones is by far the best. Book 3, Raintree: Sanctuary was okay. Didn't really care for the hero in that one. If you do plan to read any of these read them in order since they are really just one long story with three couples.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible!
This book is so bad I would sell it but I wouldn't want to put anyone else through the horrific read.
Truly terrible.
Don't waste your money!!!
I threw mine away- where it belongs- trash.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not to bad at all....
Hey this one was pretty good! I didn't realize until the end that it was a "continuing" story (I was wondering how Howard was going to wrap it up so quickly; now I know...) The story line was good, and I really like her "Raintree" world... very unique! I've quit investing in just "ok" series, but I think I'll give this one a shot, it has quite a bit more potential then any of the other series I've tried lately. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Forever
The book was good, in the same style as all of linda Howards other books. If you like her other stuff, you'll probably like this one too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great romance book
One thing that I really liked about this book is the pacing of the book. There was just the right amount of time spent developing the character and having them interact before any of the stronger feelings surface. Max was definitely a very well-written hero. He is very alpha even though you hardly see him lose his cool and yet always in command of things around him. Claire is definitely a mysterious and aloof heroine on the surface. But inside they are both very loving and passionate people that find love in one another. This is a very nice romance. Wish the book was longer though :-) I did not wish the book to end quickly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost, But Not Quite There...
I really hate to give books anything other than a five star rating (mostly because i tend not to finish books if i don't like them! a very bad habit!) but i just can't give it to ALMOST FOREVER.

Firstly, i'd like to know how on earth the title relates at all to the story? (if anyone could enlighten me i would appreciate it!)

The first part of this book i really, really enjoyed.i liked the developement between Claire and Max.And i REALLY liked the fact that the main character of Claire was not the stereotypical fiesty, over confident, cheeky, spitting female that everyone seems to love in romance novels.I just thought it was so refreshing to have a heroine was vunerable and insecure underneath her icy facade.

Where this novel started to go wrong was with the whole 'betrayal' of trust between Claire and Max.I think Claire reacted as anyone would to learning that Max was just using her.The thing that really annoyed me was that the two characters never really talked about it.In claire's head she just acknowledges the fact that, despite what Max did, she still loves him and then the story moves on.Max never really tells her that he wasn't just using her and that he wanted his 'work' over and done with so he could get to know her. They never really resolve this, and there is no re-building of trust.

THEN! Max pissed me off because he seemed so dominating (which is not necessarily a bad thing in some cases) and he didn't really take Claire's feelings into account until she would have to TELL him.To me he just seeemed a bit inconsiderate of her wishes at times but i suppose no character is perfect.

BUT, the main reason i give this book only four stars (and probably would only give it 3 1/2) is because of when they go to england for the wedding.Max is completely oblivious to Claire's growing anxiety and discomfort - and for someone who is supposed to 'love' her i just thought that was wrong. Also the fact that Claire is anxious and scared to marry Max is not because she doesn't trust him or that they never really resolved the main issue (Max using her to get information) in the book, but because she thinks she is unworthy and not in his 'league' annoyed me.I know this fits with her character but i still found it a bit hard to believe.

AND THEN! in the end, they just have a brief conversation where everything is resolved and the world is hunky dory and they live happily ever after! WHAT THE HELL? Was this book missing FIFTY pages? It was just too sudden and did not tie up all the lose ends and emotions that needed to be tied up.This book really could have been another hundred pages long!

Having said that,(and having had my little rant) in a lot of ways this book was great! I liked the fact that this book was a good old fashion romance, in that there was no outrageous far-fetched suspense plot (althought if done well they can be great!) and that the whole story revolved around Claire and Max's relationship.Like i said, the first half of the book was really great!

All in all, this book was so short i finished it in 24 hours, and it just needed to be that bit longer to really come to a satisfactory emotional resolution.Although i will say, in many romance novels (ones that i have read anyway) this tends to happen a lot. There is a betrayal of trust and then all is forgiven and then it is 'Happily every after'.I'd like to know what happens after the marriage ceremony, when the bonds of that new found trust are stranded again and if they actually hold up.

This book is a fast read, but really you have to make your own ending to get any sort of satisfaction with the conclusion of this book.

As an extra i would like to agree with one reviewer, who said that they are beginning to doubt amazon reviews. If a reviewer hasn't FINISHED the book, i don't think they should be writing a review about it! It annoys me that some of my favourite books have crap reviews because some idiot who hasn't even read the whole thing thinks the pace is 'not fast enough' or the plot is 'unrealistic'(I'd like to know how someone who hasn't read the book can know if the plot is realistic or not?).At times it also makes me doubt the star rating given to some of the books i look at on this website.

4-0 out of 5 stars Liked it
This was an entertaining way to pass the time.I got the book in a stack that I bought on ebay.It is a follow-up to Sarah's Child and I actually liked it better.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it!Great story!
The author had interesting plot and characters that were refreshing.I did not predict some of the details that would happen. This book was very enjoyable, creative and different from the typical romance novel.I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it.I don't want to give anything away because it is more fun to read without knowing what will happen. But I will provide the beginning of the plot, which is included on the back cover of the book. The setting is current day corporate world in Houston and Dallas, Texas.Max works for company "A" that plans to do a corporate takeover of company "B".Claire is a secretary at company "B".Max plans to charm her into giving him secret information about company "B" without telling her who he is.Sexual language: mild.Number of sex scenes: three.Copyright: 1986.Genre: contemporary romance. ... Product Description
For breathless action, gripping suspense, and intense romance, bestselling author Linda Howard never misses a beat–and her thrilling new novel will have your heart racing.

In the charming rural town of Trail Stop, Idaho, accessible to the outside world by only a single road, young widow Cate Nightingale lives peacefully with her four-year-old twin boys, running a bed-and-breakfast. Though the overnight guests are few and far between–occasional hunters and lake fishermen–Cate always manages to make ends meet with the help of the local jack-of-all-trades, Calvin Harris, who can handle everything from carpentry to plumbing. But Calvin is not what he seems, and Cate’s luck is about to run out.

One morning, the B&B’s only guest inexplicably vanishes, leaving behind his personal effects. A few days later Cate is shocked when armed men storm the house, demanding the mystery man’s belongings. Fearing for her children’s lives, Cate agrees to cooperate–until Calvin saves the day, forcing the intruders to scatter into the surrounding woods.

The nightmare, however, is just beginning. Cate, Calvin, and their entire community find themselves cut off and alone with no means to call for help as the threat gathers intensity and first blood is drawn.

With their fellow residents trapped and the entire town held hostage, Cate and Calvin have no choice but to take the fight to their enemies under the cover of night. While reticent Cal becomes a fearless protector, Cate makes the most daring move of her life . . . into the very heart of danger.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just okay
Not the best I've reaad from Howard but I really loved the hero and would like to see more from him. They are a bit redundant at times.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cover of Night - Enjoyed it Much!
I enjoyed this story very much.I thought Cate was wonderful and I loved her interaction with her children and her customers/neighbors.Cal was wonderful.I don't understand the negative reviews.Try it, you won't be disappointed.

Linda Howard's never fails to take me to another world and make me feel so much a part of it.She is my favorite author!

I also just finished "Kiss Me While I Sleep".I adored that one and didn't want it to end.

Also read After the Night, Shades of Twilight, Son of the Morning, Kill and Tell, All the Queens Men, Dream Man, Dying to Please, Hearts of Fire, Open Season.I loved them all!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not romantic. Not suspenseful. Not even remotely believable...
After the death of her husband in Seattle several years ago, Cate Nightingale took their infant sons and moved to a remote town in northern Idaho. She supports herself and the boys by running a bed-and-breakfast. (No, I did not make this up.She runs a B & B in the middle of nowhere). When one of her guests leaves under suspicious circumstances Cate is annoyed but not overly concerned.Things change when two armed men come in search of something the guest may have left behind. The men are run off by the local handyman, Cal Harris, but return with reinforcements and Cate, Cal and the other residents of Trail Stop find themselves fighting for survival.

There is just so much wrong here that it's hard to know where to start.

The first 100 pages are incredibly dull, chock full of Cate performing mundane tasks like baking, cleaning and childcare - not the stuff of romantic suspense for most of us!The four year old twins are annoying, taking up far too much page time with their "cute" antics (ugh!) and baby-talk (double ugh!!).I was so sick of reading "Mr. Hawwis" and "Awwight".If a four year old still can't pronounce the letter `r', then they should see a speech therapist. But I digress. On to the next problem...

The plot is utterly and completely ludicrous. You know you're in trouble when the characters themselves are thinking things like "This doesn't make any sense!" and the bad guys keep having to explain their "evil plot" to each other over (and over) again.Just when you thought you'd reached the height of stupidity you climb a little higher.(I wish I was making this up, but unfortunately there really is a ridiculous rock climbing sequence toward the end). One piece of good news:the kids are out of the picture torturing their grandparents in Seattle.

Well, at least you've got the romance to look forward to, right?Wrong. What little "romance" there is to be found doesn't take place until about the last 30 pages of the book.In fact, when Cate's mother mentions the fact that Cal might be interested in her, Cate thinks the following:"Cate didn't know whether to feel amused or horrified. She was now on a handyman's level?".Direct quote.Wow - dull, drab AND shallow - lucky Cal.

Despite the gaping plot holes, the author still does know how to write, but there just isn't any way to salvage this story.I didn't care for this book and personally wouldn't recommend it to anyone.Move along to another Linda Howard book (she's got some great ones!) and let this one RIP.

There's a fair amount of swearing and one very brief love scene with some descriptive content.

3-0 out of 5 stars Was this written by a ghost writer?
I love Linda Howard books and I can't get enough of them. However having read so many of them I am not convinced she wrote this as the style is so different and much more basic - not nearly the same class of read as her other novels. So all in all a disappointment.

1-0 out of 5 stars Soccer Mom Romance
I bought this book in softback years ago, tried to get past the first chapter and failed. I set it aside until I literally had nothing else to read, and yup, those first few chapters were just as bad as I remembered. I get the feeling that Howard's trying to court the mommy brigade hard and heavy, given the ginormous emphasis given to the female protagonist's mom status and the painfully detailed minutiae that involves child-raising. Because of this constant iteration, coupled with TMI about Cate's dead husband, the character immediately lost all "sexy" points in my book from the start, and I'm hard-pressed to see what Cal saw in her (other than she seems to make really good muffins). Cate is a MOM, and that's pretty much what she dwells on throughout the entire book.

Like other readers, I've taken Howard off my auto-read list. A lot of her earlier books were pretty amazing, barring those with the wimpy throw-back-to-the-early-60s heroines. The dynamic between the protagonists sizzles in books like "After the Night" and "Dream Man." She packed just enough suspense into the novels without letting that aspect of the plot shoulder the weight. In the past five years or so, Howard seems to not really know what she wants to write, suspense or romance. The two genres don't come together as fluidly as they did in her previous novels, so her newer books are a mixed bag. Maybe Ms. Howard should take a breather for a few years and then come back to writing when she has some fresh ideas.

Hopefully, they won't involve any "mommy" characters. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sorry seems to be the hardest word...
Yes, this IS one of those early Linda Howard novels where the hero is a jerk and does something *almost* unforgiveable to the heroine. But for some reason, despite all this, the book just worked for me and I really enjoyed it.

The Cutting Edge isn't like After The Night (a book which really left a bad taste in my mouth) where the hero constantly belittles the heroine from a young age and blames her for things that are out of her control. In this book, the hero Brett Rutland is a hardened and cold-hearted man who immediately falls for Tessa Conway and sets out to seduce her. However, after they embark on a relationship, Brett, who is investigating an embezzlement case at Tessa's office, finds evidence that Tess was behind the criminal activity. Without speaking to Tessa first, Brett files charges against her and Tessa is arrested. Tessa is actually innocent and has been framed - but Brett won't give her a chance to explain. Although a storyline like this would normally drive me crazy, in this book it was believable and even understandable due to Brett's fear of losing control.

My favourite scenes are when Brett finally comes to his senses and realises that he was wrong about Tessa. He sets out to get her back at all costs and wants to make up for everything he has put her through. To be honest, the book would have been a 5-star for me if Brett had actually apologised to Tessa and said the word SORRY, but in typical 1980s romance style, Brett never does this. However, it was clear that he did pay emotionally for his behaviour and tried to make up for it. Brett is also sinfully sexy and a powerful take-charge type of guy that I really like in romance novels. Tessa is a good female character, she seemed kind hearted and genuine - though of course she could have been more firm with Brett and not taken him back until he'd apologised properly.

Overall, this isn't the greatest Linda Howard novel I've ever read (that accolade would go to Dream Man, Heart of Fire or Touch of Fire) but it is actually a lot better than many of the newer romances I try to read, and certainly I liked it more than some of Howard's newest novels, where the focus seems to always be on espionage and danger rather than romance. I would recommend this to readers who can look past a typical 1980s hard-headed hero and just want to read an old-fashioned romance novel featuring a ruthless alpha male.

2-0 out of 5 stars Aaarrrgh!
This is one of those frustrating early Linda Howard romances.LH is such a good writer, but her early books conformed to a common standard of that era (the book was published in 1985) that just does not hold up well two decades later. It was so bad that, after reading this book, I felt as if I needed an increased dose of blood pressure medication!

Tessa Conway overcame a difficult and impoverished early life in the South to become a bookkeeper at Carter Engineering in CA.She is good at her job and well-liked and respected by her coworkers.Unfortunately, an internal audit has uncovered some discrepancies and the parent corporation dispatches two troubleshooters to quietly check into the situation.Tessa is high on the list of suspects, and one of the troubleshooters, Brett Rutland, decides to combine business w/ pleasure by getting close enough to Tessa to both romance and investigate her at the same time.Tessa winds up falling for Brett, but he repays the favor by fingering her for embezzelment.Tessa is even briefly jailed, still believing that Brett is on her side and will come to her aid.

Of course, Tessa is not guilty. Before the true culprit is eventually identified, but after Tessa has been put through hell, Brett realizes he was too quick to jump to conclusions and belatedly defends her.Of course, once he has his revelation, he expectly Tessa to not only immediately forgive him, but to also immediately sleep with him.Sadly, she does both.(This is a pattern in LH's books, even some of her later ones. The hero will do something very hurtful/despicable to the heroine, and forgiveness/sex is quickly forthcoming.)

I suppose it's fairly obvious that I intensely disliked Brett Rutland. He was not a nice person and had no redeeming features. When you get right down to it, he wasn't even very good at his job, was he?He was so focused on seducing Tessa that it took him forever to find the real culprit. He behaved like a toad towards Tessa and didn't deserve her.

Tessa was a more engaging character. She wasn't initially portrayed as a typical weak, submissive, prone to victimhood 80s-style romance heroine--but that's how she ended up acting in her "relationship" w/ Brett.A real doormat.Brett really needed to do a lot more grovelling before Tessa even considered taking him back.

Tessa's lawyer also infuriated me.A decent lawyer would have made short shrift of the evidence/charges against Tessa instead of urging her to confess and go for a deal.Again, I wish Tessa had hired a new lawyer to sue the heck out of her first lawyer, Carter Engineering, Brett, and anyone else involved. And what was the deal w/ leaving her alone w/ Brett after her harrowing ordeal?A restraining order against Brett would have been a better idea!(Where's that darned BP medication?!)

LH is one of my favorite romance writers--really--but there just weren't enough redeeming qualities in The Cutting Edge for me to recommend it.It gets two stars from me based only on LH's overall body of work. There are much better choices (Midnight Rainbow, Against the Rules) among her earlier books.Better still, stick to her later works, like Dream Man, After the Night, Mr. Perfect, Kill and Tell, Son of the Morning, or numerous others, for some truly can't-miss reads.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love the Alpha male..a little frustrating though

Frustrating is a good word for this book.Brett is a wonderful example of the alpha male, but Tessa taking him back after all that?Don't think so!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Story, Frustrating Hero..
This is an older book from Ms. Howard. It's a great story of one man's mistake and how he almost loses the woman he loves.
I enjoyed the heroine a lot, but the hero was a little too domineering for my tastes, but it didn't take away from the story too much.
I just found it hard to imagine liking this guy never mind falling madly in love with him like the heroine did.He is borderline stalker and seems more or less obsessed with her rather than in love.At times he is downright scary and I started to wonder in the back of my mind if he would flip out on her.Now that I said that, the heroine is very strong and very likable.

Tessa Conway is caught unawares when the top troubleshooter for her company, Brett Rutler takes an interest in her romantically. He is everything she isn't, overbearing and surly. What she doesn't expect is to fall for him and fall hard.
Brett isn't seeing her for his own pleasure. He is looking for an embezzler in the company and needs information from the one woman who seems to know everyone and works closely with the money.Neither does he realize what he is up against. His heart is on the line now and when the guilty shows itself he is stunned and must face the ultimate challenge...

4-0 out of 5 stars Linda Howard knows how to keep readers enthralled in reading
As most critics say you can't read just one Linda Howard. She knows how to blend a romantic story with strong lead characters in an intriguing storyline.I got hooked on her writings with "Mr. Perfect" a couple of years ago and have been actively searching and reading all her other books I can find. "The Cutting Edge" is one of her stories that will keep you turning pages late into the night because you have to find out how it will end.Brett's character is one you have to learn to appreciate, he doesn't show all his cards until he has no other choice.I don't want to give the story away, but you will love Tessa's strong will and deep sense of self-respect.She's a woman who's independence fights the challenges she faces.A good read. ... loved having 2 books in one, both books were great. I just discovered Linda Howard and am enjoying her very much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Howard Best - in a 2 for 1 What a Deal!!
Spellbinding!! Unforgettable!! Howard at her best!

Howard disappeared for a period while she had back trouble, but she came back with a roar with this mesmerising book.

Marlie Keen is an empath. She feels what is happening to people in episodic black-outs, and what she is seeing now is murder in a most horrible fashion. Though she has been there done that before, she cannot withhold the information knowing the killer will strike again and again, so she puts herself through the ridicule in hopes of stopping a serial killer.

Dane Hollister wants this killer caught and will use anything and everyone in his path, including Marlie Keen. He is attracted her, and he will put himself between her and the killer, but no matter how he feels about her, he will use her as bait to stop this madman.

Marlie is deeply attracted to Dane, feels that attraction deepening into stronger emotions, possibly love. But she fights this, knowing most people cannot accept life with am empath, fearing that their every thought is laid bare. Dane swears he is different, yet when push comes to shove, he proves he, too, is not that much different than the rest.

Despite their personal problems, they are forced to work together, because Dane knows only through Marlie and her gift will be be able to bring this madman to justice. Marlie's visions grow stronger, just as her feelings for Dane, but then he betrays her. He promised her if she helped track the killer he would shield her from the public and the media. Knowing how devastating this would be to her, he deliberately alerts the press to the psychic presence on the case baiting the trap to make the killer focus his attention on Marlie. But in doing so, he may have lost the woman he was falling in love with.

Tense, gritty and emotionally draining. A book you will never forget and a fitting return for Howard.

Ever since she was a girl, Faith Devlin had worshipped stunning, sophisticated Gray Rouillard. They could not be more different. Gray's father practically owns the small town of Prescott, and in her young girl's dreams, Gray is a knight in shining Armour. That hero's image is shattered in one shattering night that is forever to change the lives of both Gray and Faith. He was all things good, bright and wonderful - until the night he throws Faith and her dirt-poor family out into the streets. Gray's father, a notorious womaniser has finally gone over the edge and left his family, disappearing into the night with his lover - none other than Faith's mother. When Gray discovers this, he takes out his uncontrollable rage upon Faith's and the rest of her family, evicting them from Rouillard land in the middle of the night.

It was a memory that was to form the rest of Faith's life. Now she lives for only one reason, to return to Prescott and finally solved what happened to Gray's father and her mother. No longer the small town girl from a family of white trash, Faith has worked very hard to make something of herself. And the time has finally come for Faith to go home. Faith did not expect Prescott to welcome her back with open arms, and she is not disappointed. Faith is the living image of her mother and in a small town people only remember all too well her mother destroyed the Rouillard marriage. But she is mildly surprised to the lengths people will go to please the now powerful Gray. She is asked to leave a motel, the police harass her, and the grocery store owner refused to even sell her groceries. However, this Faith is not the little trusting girl that could not defend herself and her family, and nothing and no one, not even the sexy Gray Rouillard, will stop her from finding out what really happened that night their parents vanished.

Only she was not prepared for Gray himself. Nor the fact that, though Gray hates her family and wants her gone from the town, Gray is making it clear her wants Faith, and he will break any rules to achieve his aim.

However, there is someone else in town very frightened by Faith's return. When someone starts threatening Faith, Gray finds himself wanting to protect her, pulling him into questioning just what did happened that night.

Vivid, and gripping characters, a powerful setting, and an intriguing mystery. Howard weaves a spell like none other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, steamy stories!
Dream Man - In Orlando, Florida, Marlie Keen leads a quiet life after a brutal attack by a serial killer left her without her psychic powers. Now, however, a new killer brings all the horror back and Marlie, once again, sees everything the killer does through his eyes.Detective Dane Hollister(yum) doesn't believe her at first, and he even thinks she may be involved, since she can describe everything that happened in the killings.Hisattraction to Marlie, however, is undeniable, and as he moves in with herfor protection, their relationship steams up, but the killer is still outthere.

After the Night - Faith Devlin is one of the "trashyDevlins" in the town of Prescott, far removed from the Gray Rouillard, the golden boy whom she adores. One night, Faith's mother runs off withGray's father and a furious Gray kicks the rest of the Devlins out of theirtiny shack.Years later, Faith returns to Prescott, a self-madebusinesswoman, and must fight both her strong attraction to Gray and themystery of what really happened that night.

If you like strong leads andstamy stories, this book is for you.Dream Man is probably my favoritebook by Linda Howard, and although Gray is a little obnoxious here andthere, he is a sweetie at heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have read both of these books over and over again!
Both of these books are on my 'all time favorites' list!I bought them when in their individual forms. To get both together is a great bonus! "Dream Man" is probably my favorite book of all times!I lovedthe characters and the story is great!Lots of suspense and romance.Someof the best love scenes!I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars 1- 2 KO
Pure Howard. Dream Man is creepy and chilling while managing to create a really charismatic couple. If you've ever fantasized about being the damsel in distress who rescues herself with the help of a slightly tarnished,well-muscled knight- Dream Man is for you. Just keep your lights on.Afterthe Night starts out slowly with lots of background information that'simportant later on, but still ponderous. This one seems to want to be athriller with good sex and only the sex part really works. The hero is VERYwell-endow... uh, I mean, well-rounded, but I could have used a heroine whowas a little less easy. She was more of a spitting kitten than the actuallioness needed by the hero. This is Howard at her sexiest, however, and thelove/sex scenes are some of the best around. ... Read more

Product Description
New York Times bestselling author Linda Howard takes white-hot passion to the limits . . .

Michelle Cabot has inherited her father's Florida cattle ranch -- and a mountain of debt. To make matters worse, a huge chunk of that debt is owed to the neighboring rancher, her nemesis John Rafferty.

He likes this new Michelle and decides to make her his woman. What he doesn't know is that underneath Michelle's cool, polished façade lies heartache, secrets and the raw determination to live life as her own woman. 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Romance Book
I did very much enjoy this book. This is not a real page turner, but is very easy reading. The story writing is not complex but is a simple romance.I would recommend this book for light reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oldie but a Goodie!
Hey!

Heartbreaker is a real beauty. It's copyright date is 1987, so it definitely qualifies under the term 'an oldie but a goodie'! You'll definitely jump right into this story, as it centers around a young girl who at one time had it all, but now finds herself struggling simply to survive. Michelle Cabot has inherited her deceased father's Florida cattle ranch, along with all the responsibilities and debts that it involves. The worst debt of all? One hundred thousand dollars owed to Michelle's old nemesis and neighboring rancher, John Rafferty. On his part, he sees the debt as a way to finally get what he has always wanted, but also disdained: Michelle herself. What follows can only be called a dynamic struggle between these two strong personalities.

This story has a singular depth to it, because it involves Michelle's struggle to cope with and protect herself from her ex-husband who abused her. This causes a lot of confusion and misconceptions between John and Michelle, finally ending when John finally finds the proof of her ex-husband's foul deeds. But the struggle for understanding that comes between these two characters before this realization is touching and greatly enriches the storyline.

On the down side for this book, it lacks a great amount of the suspense that usually characterizes Linda Howard's stories, as the murder attempts don't start until you've read at least half the story. Also, mystery is lacking, as the madman is obvious. There's only one suspect throughout the book, not even hinting at a second!

Over all, though, this book makes for an excellent read! If you're anything like me, you'll want to read this book many, many times, and find you can't help but sympathize and cheer for the characters as they face various hardships. This really is a story that will win your heart!

Hope all this helps you potential buyers and that you have a great day!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Best Linda Howard's...
I enjoy most of Howard's book. This is the first & best for me. As I like this typical love story where the Hero obsessed with the Heroine, love her, will protect with all his heart and make her most happy. When I refering my fav Hero all the time, he should be from this book "Heartbreaker"...
My other best are "Open Season", "Kill and Tell" & "To Die For". But all of Linda's books are worth reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Alpha Male 100%
Setting: Modern Times

I LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK. Alpha male 100%. The heroine is being stalked by her crazy abusive ex-husband

This book is a "MUST have" to add to your romance book collection.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only OK.Weak plot but still enjoyable.
The underlying plot was John and Michelle immediately falling for each other but fighting their feelings for 10 years while they were apart. It was primarily her fault, since she tried to make him not like her by acting haughty. She feared he would be a heartbreaker. After they got together 10 years later, he liked her a lot but she kept assuming he did not and adjusted her actions accordingly. The author used Michelle's erroneous assumptions about John's feelings to spread out the story.Unfortunately, neither one of them communicated their feelings for each other which would have ended the story much sooner.I love this author, but not this book.It was well written, and I did enjoy it even though I kept shaking my head at the lack of communication.Sexual language: mild.Number of sex scenes: about four.Setting: cattle ranch in central Florida.Copyright: 1987.Genre: contemporary romance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Overload was the best...
This might be too short of a story, but it all makes up for it in this love story. It's one of those lighthearted fun classic "I love you" kind of fantasy stories that you just want to get into, while escaping reality.

Alpha male?YES
Favorite?Definitely yes. Will read over and over again
Faithful?Yes

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad, bad book
I can't believe anyone liked this book. What a dissappointment for Linda Howard. There was a reason Elizabeth broke up with Tom - he was controlling and domineering. An extemely good reason to stay away from him.You never believed that she loved him. There wasn't a good reason to.Skip this story.

1-0 out of 5 stars A re-issue that should have stayed in the vault
Elizabeth and Tom had a torrid romance at one time, then she dropped him with no explanation. Making matters difficult for the pair is the fact that they have offices in the same building, and one evening, both find themselves trapped in the building during a power outage caused by a heat wave. Elizabeth just wants out, Tom wants answers. Faster than you can say "what a stupid..." they have their clothes off (it's hot) and soon are mounting each other left and right. In typical Howard fashion, the male is dominant and the female is a doormat, and after a night of hot sex decide they're soul mates.

Howard's dated story reads like an entry in an anthology, and is simply not good enough to warrant a separate printing. The dialogue is weak, the character development minimal, and at 144 pages (large print no less), you would be better off borrowing it from the library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overload-Story of Hot Love
I loved this story and in this world full of everything including the kitchen sink being PC, I actually miss the old romances of the 80s with the dominent alpha males that took care of the heroines. The heroine was no push over, she had her own business, her own identity, her own life. She was just gun shy due to an extremely bad past relationship and was scared to give love a try again.Fortunately for the hero, they were both at the right place and the right time and the heroine with the hero's help faced her own demons. Every woman should have her own sense of self-worth and her own identity, but sometimes life's road is alot easier to travel with someone you can lean on when the going gets tough and alot more fun when they are hot in bed as well, LOL!

5-0 out of 5 stars Only for Linda Howard
I searched forever to find a reprint of LH's Overload. The story of Tom and Elizabeth is great. I read their story a long time ago in a Summer Sizzler. I lost the book when my baggage was lost on a plane. I nearly cried. Elizabeth is strong but fragile, an interesting mix for the heroine. The trauma of her past has made her gun shy with men, especially Tom. If you like LH then this is must read. It is one of her earlier works so if your looking for something new then look elsewhere. Beware! You may already have this books floating around in your collection.

I haven't read the Lovelace story yet. It sounds interesting, but I only bought the book for LH. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bluebird Winter
It was a good story, but too short.Derek was a special person and he needed a longer, more developed story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Derek Taliferro's Too Short Story
First, I love Linda Howard's novels.Bluebird Winter is Derek's story. We first meet him in Sarah's Child where we learn he is a fantastic young man. It's too bad his story is not more developed and given more than 100 pages! It's a shame. That said, it was a nice little story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bluebird Winter - Linda Howard
I happened to have loved this story. It gave me an update on not only Derek, but his mother Marcy, Sarah, Missy, Jed, Roam, Max and his wife.Ever since I first read Sarah's Child, I was fasinated on how Derek would turn out.I remember he had told Sarah when she was pregnant with Missy how he thought about waiting for her to grow up.But, instead, he fell in love with a wonderful young woman who not only needed to be loved, but was learning to love and trust in the meantime.

My hat is off to Linda Howard for creating such a wonderful Christmas story.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful romance!
I loved Derek's story as much as Sarah's. I fell in love with him when he first appeared and couldn't wait for him to grow into his own story.
I haven't read Max's story, but after Sarah and Derek, I can't wait.
Beautiful, compassionate, lovely. Derek is the perfect man!

2-0 out of 5 stars Short, sweet Christmas story, but not what I was hoping for.
The character Derek was introduced in the book Sarah's Child. He was interesting, intriguing, different and wonderful.I was eager to learn more about him and see him in action in this book, but I was disappointed. This story was about a Doctor falling in love at first sight.Derek was the doctor, but this book didn't go into anything special about him.The story was ok, but because I wanted more character development about Derek and didn't get it, I rated it lower. This is a short story, only 93 pages long.Sexual language: mild.Number of sex scenes: one.Copyright: 1987.Genre: contemporary romance. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Linda's Hit and Miss - But I Love Her Still
I love Linda Howard's books - even though there are some I like a little less than others. She makes these characters come alive and you want to be a part of their lives. In this anthology, the stories of Zane (Mackenzie's Pleasure) and Chance (A Game of Chance) are told.

Zane is a Navy SEAL who rescues Barrie Lovejoy from the clutches of some nasty men and instantly falls for her.By the time you finish the first chapter, you're routing for him to save her, that small voice in your head repeating "Hurry up Zane, hurry up!".That voice only gets louder as the book continues and you see what a great guy he is and how much they really belong together.Deliciously perfect.

Chance is an anti-terrorism agent who's willing to do whatever it takes to make Sunny Miller spill the beans about her father, an infamous terrorist.Chance makes sure that they're "stranded" together and forces Sunny to rely on him as they work towards rescue.Chance soon discovers that Sunny is a victim of her father, not an accomplice as he'd suspected, and that he needs to keep her safe. But that involves divulging his secrets, which comes to him very reluctantly.I think that Chance is a deviation from the hero's we normally expect from Linda Howard, so he gets a bum rap. He's not always honorable or respectable - two characteristics we typically find in Linda Howard's heroes. This is one of the few Howard books where I really didn't like the hero and I would have understood if she hadn't taken him back at the end.

Mackenzie's Pleasure is definitely worth the buy and you just might enjoy the other if you give it a chance. :D

For more about the Mackenzie family, look for Mackenzie's Mountain - Wolf's story and the beginning of the series (5 stars with a couple of smiley faces to boot) and Mackenzie's Mission - Joe's story and second in the series (4 stars). You can also check out Mackenzie's Magic (4 starts, typically a novella in an anthology) to round out the series with the 5th book and get Maris' story.

For other great Linda Howard books, look for Shades of Twilight (my personal favorite), After the Night, Dream Man, Mr. Perfect (makes you drool and blush at the same time), and Open Season for a delightful mix of romance and suspense. For a bit more suspense than romance, check out some of the more recent books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Two stories
Mackenzie's Pleasure (4 stars):Zane protects Barrie.I still don't really understand why he left the Seals though.

A Game of Chance (3 stars):Chance sets up Sunny. He should be kicked.

Overall the Mackenzie series is well worth reading.Ms. Howard does have a knack for romance.

5-0 out of 5 stars MacKenzies' Honor
Woo, This is one of my favorites. It made you can't stop, I have completed these 2 series (McKenzies' Honor and McKenzies' Lagecy) only in 3 days.I highly recommend thses books for those love romance fiction.

4-0 out of 5 stars 4 stars for one story.3 stars for the other story.
This book contains two stories, described below.

4 stars to MACKENZIE'S PLEASURE.
Nice story.I liked it.I plan to read most of Linda Howard's books. She is an excellent author. Although this was not one of her best, it was still worth reading.Story brief: Ambassador's daughter Barrie is kidnapped.Navy SEAL Zane rescues her. She falls in love with him.She continues to be in danger.

Sexual language: moderate.Number of sex scenes:seven or more.Setting: current day Libya and a few places in USA.Copyright: 1996.Genre: contemporary romantic suspense.

3 stars to A GAME OF CHANCE.
Pretty good. Not great, but I'm glad I read it because I plan to read most of Linda Howard's books. She is an excellent author, although this was not one of her best. The story and characters were reasonably interesting. She wrapped it up a little too quickly and easily at the end.

CAUTION SPOILERS:Chance lied to Sunny through most of the book. When she learned the truth, he didn't try to soften it, justify it or make her feel better. He acted like he couldn't care less how she felt.At that point, she appeared to hate him, and I didn't blame her.A couple of weeks later, in one short conversation, he said he loved her, he got her back, and they married. It seemed too easy.I would have liked to have seen him suffer a little more.Story brief: Terrorist's daughter is on the run, hiding from her father for most of her life.US government agent discovers her and uses her as bait to draw her father to be captured.

Sexual language: moderate.Number of sex scenes: four.Setting: current day, various locations in USA.Copyright: 2000. Genre: contemporary romance with mild suspense at the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love me some MacKenzies!
A great series, fun to read, extremely appealing characters.I know some readers didn't care for Chance quite as much as the other MacKenzie males, but I found him to be quite masculine and very sexy.I think I went through the MacKenzies in record time! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gripping and intense!
How this book got so many 'one stars' it's beyond me. Powerful writing, moving story, strong heroine (and I was expecting a doormat from the reviews!) - it is a five star read to me! I don't understand why the reviewers judged the book by how much they liked/disliked the hero. I thought he wasn't flawless, but he wasn't that beast I was expecting from all these negative reviews. I almost feared picking up this book, and I'm glad I didn't trust the 'two stars'. This is a good book, it certainly wasn't a boring read like Howard's latest. Her early writing kept me awake late at night.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn`t put it down!!!
Please people!!Let me ask you something! How many movies or books have you watched or read that you LOVED, that didn't have a character in it that did wrong things??Test yourself on THAT! The things he did WERE terrible!! But that didn't make the story unreadable at all!! The story was full of stormy gut wrenching emotion!! I felt all of that and more! Linda Howard is BRILLIANT at MOOOVING her readers..whether to anger, love, desire, or pure hyperventilation or ALL of those things!! I DREADED to pick up this story as the reviews were terrible :( I have just collected a bunch of LH books and after LOVING every one of them so far I was afraid that reading this one was going to break the streak. I did it anyway..and SHAME on me for ever listening to those bad reviews!! Ya, he was a MESS..and she needed to kick him to the curb! But life just doesn't work like that EVERY time!! This is an imperfect world and we are imperfect people! Some times, and I am living proof of it, people are so in love that they DO change and for the better. I love my husband of 25 years and I could never imagine going back and not fighting for it to work! We have been happy for over 20 years now! I guess we all just have to decide for ourselves how far we are willing to go. I truly believe that people CAN change!! Maybe not all, but some can! I LOVED this book!

1-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE Linda Howard, and HATED this book
Linda Howard is one of my favorite authors.I felt compelled to write this review to warn any reader out there who hasn't read her work before to NOT read this book. They say don't judge a book by its cover... well, in this case, don't judge the author by this book. The book is horrendous. The lead male is abusive, flat, mean, and practically un-lovable.The lead female is extremely likable, until she lets the "hero" walk all over her. It's disturbing and nauseating and I gave up 100 pages into it (and skimmed the last 175 just to get some closure). Lord, I had no idea someone as talented as Linda could have written something so appallingly bad... but, I forgive her.She has so many other fabulous books that she's more than made up for this one disaster.

1-0 out of 5 stars Officially my "worst book ever"
I don't want to rehash what everyone is saying other than to add my voice to the rest. This was one of the few books I could not bring myself to finish...and reading the synopsis of the ending makes me glad that I actually threw this book across the room.
I generally enjoy a Linda Howard alpha male..."Mr. Perfect", "Dream Man", "After The Night", "Dying To Please" being some books with my favorite incarnations. This story made me so angry because Ms. Howard actually created an abusive asshole and expected us to swallow him as a romantic "hero"
I actually started out enjoying the book until he came along. Sallie's struggle to get to the top was very interesting. Alas, it's only the first few chapters and then when our dashing stalker appears she manages to become a complete victim. Argh.
Interesting sidenote: Linda Howard wrote a short story called "Overload" in a Summer Sizzlers anthology where the the heroine has overcome an abusive relationship with a guy who employed serveral of our hero's tactics to control and isolate her. I'm gladd that Ms. Howard found the error of her ways in her later stories.

1-0 out of 5 stars obviously one of her earlier work
Before I read this book, I knew the reviews weren't good but I like her LH books so much that I thought, what the heck, it can't be so bad. Believe me, it's worse. The story is about this well-known reporter married this round, mousy girl that's desperate for affection because of pity, then he left her because worry too much when he had assignments on warring nations. She put her life back together and became a great reporter. He comes back, want her to stay home, be his loving wife, have his children, and be what he left behind in the beginning.oh, did I mention that she was pregnant while they were together and he blame her for it and that she had to bury her baby alone? And here's the kicker, the hero actually said legally, she can't refuse his "marital rights".When was this book published?
Since this is a romance, I don't have to tell you how it end. However, despite this being a romance novel, I don't know I would call what Sally and her husband have love. They best he could give her was selfish love and her love for him was blind.
I couldn't believe that this book was actually one of LH's. The characters were completely different from her latest books.Good luck not tearing your hair out when reading/listening to this book. But I would recommend skipping her earlier books and go her Eve Duncan series.
Sorry if I spoiled the story for anyone, but I couldn't resisted pointing out what irritated me so much :) ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars ehhh, okay if you like reading about nosy townspeople
This is my second book by Linda Howard, my first being All the Queen's Men- which I was not impressed with at all, and I just couldn't get into the story of this one either. The beginning of this book was very promising, Wolf Mackenzie is sure a hot alpha-male- but the story started getting boring by the middle. The hero doesn't pursue the heroine the way I would have liked, maybe I just like a really aggressive hero who pursues the heroine like crazy, Wolf pretty much just wants the heroine to get out of his hair even though he is attracted to her, while she stays and intrudes on his way of life- the heroine is pretty nosy and I hate that she fell in love with him way before he did with her, the issue of love was hardly talked about till the end, also I didn't feel the love the hero had for the heroine, he wanted to protect her, yes, but where was the insecure passionate feeling of love, just didn't see it.

The main problem with this book is that there is not enough romance or focus on the main couple, it basically centered around the prejudice of the town's people because Wolf and his son were part Indian, all the people in the town were so nosy and always accused the hero of being bad for no reason except for the way he looked. The writing didn't capture my complete attention, I felt like I was reading a diary of what was happening to the heroine everyday, I can't tell you how aggravating it is to be in a heroine's mind who is TSTL in many ways, other points of view were shown but not as much as the heroine's. I wish the book was more passionate, with the hero and heroine at least talking more about themselves and what they truly wanted in life, did the hero even ever ask the heroine why she came to town, no, because he just didn't seem to care, it would have been better with more drama, like she decided to leave him for his own good and then we could truly see the extent of his feeling for her of wanting her back and needing her in his life, the sex was hot but it seemed like the hero was only interested in that, I want a hero who is in love and you can see it through his actions and love making, couldn't find that here- it was too easy for him to get the heroine-he didn't have to work for it at all, she pretty much threw herself at him and didn't care if he would one day tire of her because she loved him, she never even bothered to ask him about where their relationship was going-wheres her self respect. I don't know why I didn't like this book when others clearly loved it, many have recommended it but I am pretty disappointed with it, I felt like Howard only skimmed the top of emotions in the book and never got the heart of the matter, not sure if I should read another Linda Howard book, I guess I am more of a Lisa Kleypas type of girl...

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Romance
This book was my first Linda Howard.I loved the character Wolf- so sexy and capable- did not like Mackenzies' Mission nearly as much (about Wolf's son Joe, next book in series)

5-0 out of 5 stars Just an all-around great romantic story!
MacKenzie's Mountain by Linda Howard is just an all-around great romantic story! It is not my favorite MacKenzie story, it but is still a great read! It tells the story of the proud Indian MacKenzie father, Wolf MacKenzie, and Mary Elizabeth Potter, the local school teacher. Mary is a naive virgin who knows little about men and sex. She feels though an instant attraction to the strong alpha male, Wolf. He helps her whe she gets stranded in the snow on his mountain. She was on her way to see Wolf's son, Joe, and try and get him to finish his education.

Wolf is an ex-con who was wrongly convicted in a rape case, but the townspeople still look down on him. Mary doesn't care what people think about Wolf because she knows that he is a good man who when he cares for someone, he cares deeply. Wolf makes her feel like a feminine seductive woman too.

There is also a storyline about a rapist in the small town who is trying to set Wolf up to take the fall. He attacks Mary, but she is saved by the town sheriff. After this attack, Wolf takes it upon himself to protect Mary and claims her as his woman. This is such a sweet book and even though Wolf is an alpha male, he is not overbearing and obnoxious. He is very tender when it comes to Mary and I like that aspect of this novel best. I'm tired of alpha males who are too rough, gruff, and who always want things hard and fast in the bedroom. 5 stars!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nearly 20 years later, this story is still fantastic
Mary Elizabeth Potter was raised to be a lady. Her Aunt Ardith raised her to never raise her voice, to always wear a slip with a skirt, and to treat people the way that she wants to be treated. And at the age of 27, Mary is a spinster who is firmly on the shelf. But she's content with her life. She's just relocated from Savannah, Georgia, to teach high school in the small town of Ruth, Wyoming. Mary doesn't know much about small-town life, but pretty soon she discovers that one of the school's most promising students, Joe Mackenzie, has dropped out of school and Mary heads up Mackenzie's Mountain to convince the boy to come back. However, when she gets up there she meets Joe's father, Wolf Mackenzie--a half-breed Indian who Mary is instantly attracted to, and the feeling's mutual. When Mary begins to tutor Joe so that he can graduate, she and Wolf continue to run into each other, and they can only resist the attraction for so long...

Wolf Mackenzie knows that he's reviled by the citizens of Ruth, and he doesn't care. After being convicted of a crime he didn't commit, Wolf returned to Ruth a hard man, who refused to let himself be run out of town because of the people's mistakes. So when people look at him sideways in the general store, Wolf ignores it, when he hears people mutter slurs as he walks down the street, he keeps his head up. Because Wolf Mackenzie doesn't care what these people think of him. Well, except a certain schoolteacher.

Mackenzie's Mountain is the story of a sweet-tempered and innocent woman who falls for a man from the wrong side of the tracks. Wolf Mackenzie has done nothing wrong, he was cleared of his prior conviction, but that doesn't stop people from gossiping about him and treating him like a second-class citizen. The last thing he wants is for Mary to be treated badly because of her association with him, but he still finds her hard to resist. When girls in town are attacked, Wolf is the first person the townspeople suspect, and it's Mary who defends him and demands a fair trial. That Wolf is a strong, proud man who can take care of himself doesn't matter to her, because she cares about him. And that's what makes this book fantastic. Mary is a little TSTL, but this book was written in 1989, so I forgive her. It's her innocence, in fact, that make her lovable, and it's her strength of character and determination that make her admirable. Wolf is an added bonus, because he protects what's his, and won't let anyone treat Mary badly because of him. And his son Joe is an absolute delight. He almost steals the story. I'm not surprised that Mackenzie's Mountain made it into All About Romance's Top 100 Romances. This is a love story that stands the test of time, and nearly two decades later, it was still an excellent read. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars not worth the price
I can just say that in recent years I found I like her books less and less, than again maybe it's just me.
Woman that will let a man step all over them are not really my taste, it is no longer a fantasy its just pitiful and painful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good... but also not so good...
Both stories were very good, and I agree that they should've been put in order.I loved Angel Creek, but I wasn't very fond of Lady of the West. What kept this from being a four or five star read was the fact that in Lady of the West, the main hero hits the heroine and accuses her of trying to pass her first husband's baby as his, when it really was his. What made me even madder was the fact that he believed a [...] word more than his own wife's word.Men like Jake just irritates me.But other than that, I loved Victoria, Emma, and Celia. This story was so heartbreaking.I also loved Emma's little story that was included in A Lady of the West.Another problem with the book is that they use one of the same characters in Angel Creek and he told something that ruined Lady of the West for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reverse order?!
I really liked both stories...but then I am a devoted reader of Linda Howard. They only reason I will not give this a 5 star rating is the fact that the editor put the stories out of order.Read Lady of the West FIRST.Since there is a character that first appears here and then again later in time in Angel Creek.

Both stories are quick and totally engrossing reads.Once you start it is hard to put them down.

Enjoy! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Independent Woman vs. Hard Headed Cowboy
Dee Swan is a self-sufficient woman working her small property and happy with the fruits of her labor. While other ranchers in the community are suffering under the force of drought, Dees land is green and lush because of the creek runs at the edge of her property.

Lucas Cochran a powerful rancher and land owner tries to entice Dee into selling her land, Dee turns down ever offer made for her land, but the one thing she couldn't say no to was Luke the man. They become lovers, but Luke is frustrated because he can't control Dee.

A neighboring rancher is determined to get his cattle to water by plowing through Dee's property.Dee fights them off and gets hurt in the process. Luke is so angry that he damn near kills the rancher and his men and he sets explosives that re-route the creek to run to his property instead.Luke justifies his actions to himself thinking it was Dee's property and her bull headedness that put her in danger in the first place.

He takes Dee to his home to recover and avoids her questions about her property. During those weeks Dee spent with him he understands what it means to love a woman. When Dee gets well enough to go home Luke proposes marriage hoping that she loved him enough to stay.

Dee was determined to go home, so Luke had to tell her what he did to her property and arrogantly thinks that in time she'll forgive him.Well time passes and she doesn't forgive him right away. She set explosives to make the creek run back to its natural course and tries to maintain her life once again.Luke finally realizes that he can't make Dee marry him; he couldn't force her to take his money, so he proposed that he'd sign over his ranch to her if she would marry him.Dee agreed to marry him because she loved this bullheaded man and was delighted to find out that he loved her too.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good story, although not one of my favorite Howard novels
Plot Summary:This historical western romance features two love stories between best friends - there is the independent wild-cat farmer, Dee Swann, and her friend, the proper town heiress, Olivia Millican.Dee sits on the one parcel of land that never runs dry, the aptly named Angel Creek. All the local ranchers would love to buy her out, but Lucas Cochran soon decides that he wants Dee in the bargain too.Meanwhile Olivia has been steeling herself to accept Lucas since the whole town assumes they're an item, but she is drawn to a Mexican drifter who packs some serious iron. When a drought turns the countryside dry, Dee comes under attack and Lucas betrays her in order to save her.

This is the sure sign of a good, but forgettable story.I'm having really hard time coming up with anything to say for this review. There's nothing glaring or ugly for me to criticize, but I know I won't remember this one too well in a week or so.While I certainly don't have any complaints in the sensuality department (the love scenes were scorchers), I didn't get sucked into either romance on any deep emotional level.I've noticed that often happens in stories that feature more than one romance, and it felt like Ms. Howard was spread thin, trying to define two relationships in a little more than 300 pages.

I thought the historical details were adequate without being jaw-dropping.I've noticed that Ms. Howard is an expert at providing just enough backdrop to make things believable, but she doesn't go above and beyond in this particular story.I thought she had a nice balance between the lovers, although I probably liked alpha brute Lucas the least. He just didn't have enough endearing qualities to make up for his riding roughshod over everyone and everything.I actually would have liked to see the story focus on Luis Fronteras, the Mexican drifter who was all wrong for the demure banker's daughter, but he appreciates women as so few men do.That gentle quality when dealing with the female sex is appealing, especially when juxtaposed with Lucas, who would kiss Dee so hard he'd make her mouth bleed.

It's not bad, it's not great, and it's certainly not embarrassing.I'd say western romance fans would like it, but it's not one of Ms. Howard's barn burners.

1-0 out of 5 stars No Substance
This was another book that I coouldn't finish. It had no substance to it what so ever.Take away the sex and you have nothing.Don't bother with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tells of a lovely woman who keeps her independence and heritage in Angel Creek valley when her father dies
Linda Howard's ANGEL CREEK is narrated by Natalie Ross and tells of a lovely woman who keeps her independence and heritage in Angel Creek valley when her father dies. When a man with ruthless ambition enters her world and introduces romance, trouble and possibly murder evolve.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it...
I absolutely loved this book.I couldn't get enough of it.It grabs your attention from the very start & makes you not want to stop until the end.Dee & Lucas were very likable & since she was so feisty & stubborn it was a lot of fun. There is also a secondary romance in this book with Luis from A Lady of the West.I usually don't have any feelings one-way or the other on secondary romances but I loved Luis & Olivia.

Although this book is considered part of a series it can certainly stand-alone also. It's been several years since I read A Lady of the West.At the time I didn't know that this book followed it.Since Luis was the one linking the 2 books & he wasn't the main character in either book you don't feel like you missed anything.

I'm a huge Linda Howard fan.My favorite author actually.I would highly recommend this book as well as many other books by her.If this is your type of book then you won't be disappointed. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, but maybe worth reading once.
Max Conroy is an executive working for thriving company Spencer-Nyle and he is hand picked by the CEO to infiltrate an alluring business opposition. The only problem is that he needs information that one person can give him besides the CEO himself: Claire Westbrook.

A woman met with past devastations, Claire is set up with thick, nearly impenetrable walls, but Max is brilliant at reading people and Claire is no exception. He quickly discovers the way to get past her skepticism concerning him and works his way into her heart.

But when he is called away on business after he's given the necessary information, the jig is up. Claire discovers his true personality and is, understandably devastated.

Now, while the premise is all well and good and has been done loads of times before, I found the writing style almost emotionless at times. Normally when I read stories about heartache and betrayal, I feel something for the characters and get involved, but that just didn't happen in this instance.

I think she's made the characters too aloof. Not to mention I often felt like I was reading the same thing over and over. I can't recall how many times she mentioned Claire's misgivings about handsome men and her thick walls and Max's deceiving personality. Sometimes I just kind of wanted to bang my head on a wall.

And normally, I'm very drawn to the male leads, but again, I almost wished Claire would just say, "thanks, but no thanks."

Max was a very controlling, demanding lead and it was done in a way that nearly smothered Claire's personality. He screwed up big time with her when he used her to gain information that he needed, but never once did he own up to it. There was always an excuse and he just expected her to forgive him.

Then on top of it, when he and Claire got around to having sex, he never bothered protecting her. He wanted her to have his baby and both times, he only thought about protection as an afterthought and even that is stretching. He all but demanded her to marry him.

And then after his 'proposal' he pretty much made every decision concerning wedding preparations and told Claire, "You WILL have a white wedding" when she voiced her skepticism to not have one. And when she said she didn't want a traditional engagement ring, he pretty much forced that on her, too. Finally, the real kicker is that after she accepted his proposal, he told her she was going to put in her notice at work after he uprooted her life to move back to Dallas with him. He gave no consideration that she might like her job there and he just expected her to automatically agree to it and the icing on the cake was that she did! There was little to no resistance to him, despite her thoughts claiming to not want to give it up.

Max was often, just all-in-all, a difficult character to relate to or feel sympathy for and really, I found myself wanting to slap him upside the head. That's never happened to me before with a male lead and I don't know quite what to do with it.

The idea had such potential behind it but, really, it was a disappointment to me, especially since the summary very much drew me in. It's maybe worth a read, but I would suggest skimming. There are definitely other romance novels that are far more worth it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay for a quick read
This was my first time reading this author. Steamy scenes, but no character development. Maybe I am spoiled with Suzanne Brockmann and her ability to pull characters off the page and make them real. But these books just did not have that.

The reading order is wrong too - read Chance LAST, it has it as 3rd. It will ruin it if you read it any other way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Series
I just happened to stumble across this series and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading these books. Even though the first book was set in the 70's it flows so well. Light, easy to read and hard to put down-I finished them in a day and a half. It's always great to follow a family through from the beginning. I wish there had been even a combined book on Michael and Josh.

Well done Linda Howard

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Series -
Loved this series and Ms. Howard's writing style, as always, really takes me into the stories. These are "old fashioned" love stories with an absolutely timeless appeal. From the tale of the outcast father's love of a schoolteacher, all the way through the love stories of his children, the reader will bond with the characters.

This one is worth the money and it will earn a place as a keeper.

4-0 out of 5 stars Four instead of five
I didn't give this anthology a five because even though I like it, the writing was not at Linda Howard's most mature.First of all, she tells the reader that it is set a bit in the future, to excuse the use of advanced laser technology. But the prejudice toward Native American's, which isn't really that relavent now, let alone in the future, just doesn't really fit.Even in the backwoods of Montana, people don't really automatically assume "the Injun did it".That is an attitude more appropriate for the early 1900's, late 1800's.And there isn't even a reservation nearby to explain their extreme prejudice! How are Native's an irritant if they aren't even there, except for Wolf McKenzie? Linda Howard makes some of the same mistakes she normally does, such as making the daughter pale and petite, exactly like the mom, and all of the boy's tall and broad and dark, like Wolf McKenzie.Inheritance of traits doesn't exactly work out that way.Despite these inconsistencies, I have always enjoyed Linda Howard's books. I bought this mostly because I read them years ago and thought they were pretty good, and now I have it for my Kindle whenever I want.

4-0 out of 5 stars The complete Mackenzie Collection
I really loved this collection.I read it several times.I think if we had more writers like Linda Howard more people world read instead of play video games.I would love to see more from her, she makes me feel as though I am in the story. What a wonderful job.I look forward to reading more from Ms. Howard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Entertaining
This book was an absolute pleasure to read.I could not put it down.

1-0 out of 5 stars One virgin is enough
Linda Howard loves to minimize her female characters into nothing more then sex objects. All of her female main characters are virgins. Quite frankly I am sick of reading about how super important that really is. All of her female characters make love for the first time like insatiable beasts ignoring their physical response to having been made love to for the first time. These characters are so fake and I am really getting sick of them. This novel really hit the bottom because her virgin girls theme I have just described to you, that has been a consistent theme in all of her other books in the Mackenzie line repeated the same ridiculous line. Why can't someone write about a beautiful woman who isn't a virgin and who really does enjoy sex for sex...without having to write an erotica?

5-0 out of 5 stars I now understand why Linda Howard is rated so highly...
Having read SARAH'S CHILD, I was not too impressed.Having read DUNCAN'S BRIDE worked much better, but while it was a good read, it was not an outstanding read.Several review sites recommended MACKENZIE'S MOUNTAIN, but I never bothered to find a copy. In December 2005, I stumbled across this book (MACKENZIE'S PLEASURE), which is the story of Zane Mackenzie, the youngest son of Wolf Mackenzie and his wife Mary Elizabeth (hero and heroine of Mackenzie's Mountain).I have mixed feelings about SEAL-themed books - while I have loved Brockmann's series, I somehow prefer reading about firemen to reading about SEALS.Give this book a chance, if you share my hesitations.

Zane Mackenzie is called upon to execute a mission to rescue an ambassador's kidnapped daughter Barrie Lovejoy out of Libya. The first third of the book is about how the rescue takes place and with what consequences. In the second third, Zane and Barrie are separated by circumstances until they manage to find each other.Since there is a mystery and a bit of romantic suspense to the plot, I will not go further with the plot summary. It is probably sufficient to say that Barrie's kidnapping and rescue is somewhat more complicated than either Zane or Barrie realized.

The book begins with Wolf Mackenzie worrying about his children, from Joe down to his adopted son Chance and his youngest son Zane. Thus, Linda Howard provides the new reader with sufficient background to Zane, to understand what kind of family he comes from and what kind of person he is likely to be. The book then moves to a botched Naval exercise which leaves Zane short of two men. It is at this point that he is asked to rescue the Ambassador's daughter. Barrie Lovejoy is no spoiled socialite, although she has been protected by her father all her life (for understandable reasons). Her courage and endurance, as well as her unusual (but understandable) decisions, appeal to Zane.Barrie is poised, emotionally mature, and able to make decisions quickly.Zane has been dedicated to his job, but frustrated by the promotions that take him away from active duty. When Zane and Barrie end up spending an intense night and day together while hiding out, they form a bond even though they know virtually nothing about each other.

The book moves from the US to the Mediterranean back to the US. Despite these changes of locale (sketched in deftly for the most part), we remain focused tightly on the hero and heroine. MACKENZIE'S PLEASURE is one of the few stories where I genuinely liked the hero and heroine from the outset, and where I also felt that they were right for each other. That this contributed to my liking the book is not in question.Linda Howard's writing style also helped, as did her characterizations. Zane is an alpha male but not an overbearing alpha, but a protector and leader. The other SEALS came alive as did the heroine and her Ambassador father. What didn't work so well for me was the villain and his motivation (especially as explained to Barrie at the end).

5-0 out of 5 stars KEEP IT - KEEP IT - KEEP IT --- WOW!
Zane Mackenzie is everything you want to see in a Navy SEAL -
Dang! but he is hot!
Finally we get a young woman that is worthy of the hero.

Barrie Lovejoy takes the only out to driving away the emotional and physical trauma she was subjected to in her kidnapping.

Zane Mackenzie, in the tradition of his father and brothers is man enough and sensitive enough to deal with Barrie.

When Zane is wounded in portecting Barrie, she becomes distaught at being forced to leave Zane behind without knowing if he would live.

I loved finding about Wolf and his family, especially Michael and Josh [why don't they have stories of their own?] Poor Joe, 5 sons and no daughter. It took Barrie and Zane to pull a fast one.

There is just something about these Mackenzie men that puts your hormones on red alert. We need more of these guys and more women like Barrie.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- definitely all are keepers - what a collection of men.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Those MacKenzies!
Another satisfying story about a MacKenzie brother.I enjoyed every word. And Barrie was a good match for Zane.Linda Howard is a master story teller.

I also like Beverly Barton but didn't care as much for Defending His Own as I have some of her other books.Secret baby stories bore me so that's probably the reason. Also, I don't much care for stories where something happens to a character as a teen and he/she holds it against the world forever.Good grief! We all grow and mature. Some of these people never do.Along with the secret baby, this is an over-used and unnecessary plot device. It creaks. ... Just try and ignore me, Robert is handsome, devious, awesome, and somewhat controlling and always gets what he wants. It has everything you want, it's a mystery, thrilling and romantic. You won't want it to end.

Usually, I enjoy most all of Linda Howard's books but this story left me unfulfilled, don't get me wrong the story is still doable, it's just missing that Howard "umpth" she is so well-known for.At least in my opinion.I did however, enjoy Allison Leigh's story.I liked it a lot better than Ms. Howards. This was the first story by Allison Leigh, I have read, but it won't be my last.I will go in search of more books by this writer.I liked her a lot!

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect!!
What a read. One of her best.Liked it as much as Lawless by Palmer and Anything, My Love by Simmons. Read 'em all.None should be missed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Surprise
I had already read Linda Howard's book, originally out in 1994, (they got me with the new title and I did not read the copyright dates carefully enough!)but I was pleasantly surprised to read Allison Leigh's book One More Change. She shows great promise and I look forward to other Turnabout Island books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Great Stories

4-0 out of 5 stars Good romantic suspense short story collection
For an anthology collection, these were surprisingly good. (I usually prefer full length novels.) I liked all three stories.

4 stars: Lake of Dreams
Highly original short story with a mix of suspense, romance, paranormal and horror. Kept me on the edge of my seat!

3.5 stars: Blue Moon
Short but sweet love story with an sexy small town sheriff and psychic heroine. This one ended a little abrubtly for me--would have liked for it to be longer. Good read.

3.5 stars: White Out
Heroine saves sexy hero during a blizzard. This one also seemed a little too short. Would have liked more to the story.

3-0 out of 5 stars Strangers in the Night
It was a decent book, but I preferred Linda Howard's book "Son of The Morning" which has a similar premise of dreaming about someone in another time and then actually meeting up with them. "Son of The Morning" is a more facinating story line, with alot of exciting intrigue.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect place to Start
This book of three stories, or novellas, is a compilation of previously published material. That made no difference to me since I had not read any of them before this. All three stories are sexy and suspenseful, typical Howard and I loved them.It is not often that you get such bang-for-the-buck in a compilation or anthology. If you are a Howard fan, this book will delight you.If you are new to Howard then you are in for the start of a long list of books you are going to want to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine collection of romance spiced with danger
Linda Howard's STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT receives veteran narrator Laurel Merlington's smooth, seasoned voice which captures the tension and thrills of a fine story collection. From Thea, who encounters her love in a world of dreams only to find reality offers dangers on a country lake, to Hope, who offers shelter to a stranger only to suspect he may be a criminal, this provides a fine collection of romance spiced with danger.

1-0 out of 5 stars Already read these
I read 2 out of three of these books already, so I was disappointed.I thought it was a new book but its just three of her not so good books in one. ... Read more
