3-0 out of 5 stars Good stories that could take place anywhere.
I first read San Francisco Stories (also edited by John Miller), and I was so impressed that I bought the other available books in this series.Unfortunately, where San Francisco Stories gave me a feeling of aparticular place, Cape Cod Stories left me with the feeling that I could bereading about any summer vacation destination onthe upper Atlantic.Thefirst half of the book, with long entries by Norman Mailer and JohnCheever, left me feeling like I was reading good fiction that just happenedto be set in the Cape Cod area. The latter half of the book gives a muchbetter feeling of a particular place.

Unlike San Francisco Stories, which were primarily personal essays and historical accounts, the Cape Codselections are primarily short fiction. All of the stories areinteresting, but they seem to run together. There are few olderselections; Henry David Thoreau's description of the Highland Light is thebest, but seems brief. The collection also includes a few gems, includingHelen Keller'sdescription of her first "swim" in the ocean.Myonly complaint with the editorial selection is placing "Summertime onthe Cape," by Paul Theroux, at the end of the collection, rather thanat the beginning.More than the others, his essay gives a neededdescription of the area, and provides a sense of place.

I should notethat I have never been to Cape Cod.Someone who frequents the area mayfeel that this collection captures the mood of the Cape, even if it failsto provide much background for strangers. ... Read more

Product Description
For more than a century, the small town of Haddan, Massachusetts, has been divided, as if a line drawn down the center of Main Street, separating those born and bred in the village from those who attend the prestigious Haddan School. But one October night the two worlds are thrust together due to an inexplicable death, and the town's divided history is revealed in all its complexity. The lives of everyone involved are unraveled: from Carlin Leander, the 15 year old who is as loyal as she is proud, to Betsy Chase, a woman running from her own destiny; from August Pierce, a boy who unexpectedly finds courage in his darkest hour, to Abel Grey, the police officer who refuses to let unspeakable actions - both past and present - slide by without notice. ... Product Description
Women of the Sparrow family have unusual gifts. Elinor can detect falsehood. Her daughter, Jenny, can see people's dreams when they sleep. Granddaughter Stella has a mental window to the future - a future that she might not want to see.

In Alice Hoffman's latest tour de force, this vivid and intriguing cast of characters confronts a haunting past - and a very current murder - against the evocative backdrop of small-town New England. By turns chilling and enchanting, The Probable Future chronicles the Sparrows' legacy as young Stella struggles to cope with her disturbing clairvoyance. Her potential to ruin or redeem becomes unbearable when one of her premonitions puts her father in jail, wrongly accused of homicide. Yet this ordeal also leads Stella to the grandmother she was forbidden to meet, and to an historic family home full of talismans from her ancestors. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "On this fragile piece of land..."
Alice Hoffman has written an Introduction to this treasure chest of poems, diaries, stories, and musings about Cape Cod that makes the reader plunge into the many atmospheres and moods of this special place. Her seduction proves worthy, for this collection of prose and poetry edited by John Miller and Tim Smith manages to uncover memories and a long history of this unique haven for artists.

Cape Cod and its neighboring Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard have long been a place for writers to visit, to live, and to incorporate into some of the most important literature of this country.Herman Melville writes about the oddities of the Nantucketer.Among the writings is a Falmouth Whaling Logfrom the early 1900s.There are moments from the works of Henry David Thoreau, Edgar Allen Poe, Benjamin Franklin, Helen Keller, poems by Marge Piercy, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and Sylvia Plath, and fresh stories from Adam Gopnik, John Updike, Kurt Vonnegut, Norman Mailer, and Edmund Wilson - twenty five entries in all - that bring back memories for those who have had the special joy of Cape Light.

This is a fine selection of quick reading stories that remind us how important (in its own quiet way) that this eastern most point of the United States has been - and continues to be: this fragile piece of land has inspired more beauty of words than almost any other idiosyncratic spot in the country.Grady Harp, December 2004

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Pleasure
I didn't find this anthology as effective in conveying the feel of a place as say, "A Key West Reader". Some of the pieces, however, made it worth the purchase - "Falmouth Whaling Log" by an anonymous sailor, "Nantucket" by Melville and Kurt Vonnegut's "The Hyannis Port Story" were gems. ... Product Description
The courage to face the unthinkable is at the core of this magnificent novel. How do we manage to confront the truths in our lives and find forgiveness in the most unforgiving of circumstances?

When Ethan Ford fails to show up for work on a brilliant summer morning, none of his neighbors would guess that for more than thirteen years, he has been running from his past. His true nature has been locked away, as hidden as his real identity. But sometimes locks spring open, and the devastating truths of Ethan Ford’s history shatter the small-town peace of Monroe, affecting family and friends alike.
