Product Description
The Rainbow is a 1915 novel by British author D. H. Lawrence. It follows three generations of the Brangwen family, particularly focusing on the sexual dynamics of, and relations between, the characters.

Lawrence's frank treatment of sexual desire and the power it plays within relationships as a natural and even spiritual force of life, though perhaps tame by modern standards, caused The Rainbow to be prosecuted in an obscenity trial in late 1915, as a result of which all copies were seized and burnt. After this ban it was unavailable in Britain for 11 years, although editions were available in the USA.

The Rainbow was followed by a sequel in 1920, Women in Love. Although Lawrence conceived of the two novels as one, considering the titles The Sisters and The Wedding Ring for the work, they were published as two separate novels at the urging of his publisher. However, after the negative public reception of The Rainbow, Lawrence's publisher opted out of publishing the sequel. This is the cause of the five-year gap between the two novels.

In 1989, the novel was adapted into the UK film The Rainbow, directed by Ken Russell who also directed the 1969 adaptation Women in Love. In 1988, the BBC produced a television adaptation directed by Stuart Burge with Imogen Stubbs in the role of Ursula Brangwen. ... Read more

Product Description
Over the Line: The Art and Life of Jacob Lawrence includes essays by eight distinguished art historians examining the ways in which Jacob Lawrence's art speaks so powerfully to different audiences. It is the first multi-author, in-depth probe of the artist's entire career: the nature of his work, his education, the critical climate in which he worked, and his use of materials and techniques. It reproduces, in full color, more than 200 works, most of which have not been published in color, or at all, in other books on the artist. An extensive chronology, collating events in his life with his public reception--including selected exhibitions, publications, honors, and awards--is illustrated with family photographs.

Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000) spent his childhood in New York City, attending classes at the Harlem Community Art Center and the American Artists School, and later working for the Federal Art Project. While still in his twenties Lawrence exhibited his paintings at major museums across the country, including the Phillips Collection, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where he became the first African American artist represented in the permanent collection. He lived, painted, and taught in New York City until 1971, when he moved to Seattle to join the faculty of the University of Washington. He was the recipient of numerous awards including the National Medal of Arts.

The paperback edition of Over the Line is published in conjunction with a major exhibition opening at the Phillips Collection, Washington, DC, on May 26, 2001, and traveling to the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Eurocentrically Selective
True, this is a large collection of Lawrence's work, however it is very incomplete. In the beginning of Lawrence's career, only 21 years old, he produced the Toussaint L'Ouverture Series. A 41 panel series dedicated to the struggle of enslaved Africans and their victory, which was never more blatantly successful than that of Haiti under the slave-born revolutionary known as Toussaint L'Ouverture. In 1938, when this series was completed it was so monumental for the Pan-African American experience, yet this book refuses to acknowledge it.

First, there is only one print, and one that is subtle and not graphic (such as black soldiers defeating whites which was a major theme of the series). It is an insult to the origin of Lawrence's genius and his legacy, especially in regards to pre-Civil Rights African America:which was his community, not the pseudo-intermingled America of today that is now trying to claim him as an "American" artist, taking away his true existence as an African American artist, not American, especially during an era when his people were so restricted from full citizenship.

Only purchase this book if you want a false story, one that ignores and criticizes (the author had the audacity to ridicule Lawrence for the Toussaint Series because the author claims Lawrence was not knowledgable about the Haitian revolution).Though I think Lawrence was aware, it is irrelevant. As a black man descended from slaves, the revolution was within him, he did not have to read about it.He felt it.The Haitian revolution belongs not to just Haiti, it is a symbol of the enslaved African's struggle against white oppression and the ability to be victorious at it.Even if that is all he knew, it is enough. He did not have to read about a struggle for equality, it was his very existence.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a Critic

"Lawrence (1917-2000) grew up in Harlem, then worked and studied in many parts of the country and in New York until 1971, when he joined the faculty of the U. of Washington in Seattle. Editors Nesbett and DuBois, both of the Jacob Lawrence Catalogue Raisonn<'e> [sic] Project, bring together eight in-depth essays by distinguished art historians who explore and interpret Lawrence's work and life[,] his brilliant art and his identity as an African American artist. Also included is an essay on the binding media and pigments found in Lawrence's paintings and a chronology of his life and reception. This edition was published in conjunction with a major retrospective organized by The Phillips Collection, Washington D.C. in 2001 (and scheduled to travel to several venues through 2003); a previous edition was published in 2000 (minus 50 pages of information about the exhibition) as part of a two-volume set titled [?]. The essays are illustrated with about 140 color reproductions, and the catalogue section features small reproductions of works in the exhibition."--Booknews

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great book; what a great artist!!!
Jacob Lawrence, who died a year ago at age 82, was one of the great American artists of the 20th century -- or any century for that matter.I had the privilege recently of viewing "The Art and Life of Jacob Lawrence" at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, and was extremely impressed. If you can't make it to the Phillips Collection, this book is the next best thing, with more than 200 full color reproductions of Lawrence's work.

And what a powerful body of work it is, mainly -- but not only -- on the African-American experience.Themes include: slavery; escape via the Underground Railroad; heros and heroines like Frederick Douglass and Harriet Tubman (plus Haitian revolutionary Toussaint L'Ouverture); black migration to the North; continued persecution (lynchings, Jim Crow) well into the 20th century; the Harlem Renaissance; and more.Lawrence's style is simple (but NOT simplistic!), urgent, and direct, using inexpensive materials (cheap store-bought poster paints on hardboard -- whatever Lawrence could afford), which give new meaning to the expression, "less is more!"You get the feeling in looking at these paintings that Lawrence HAD to paint, to bear witness, and to let the world know the situation of his people.

"Over the Line" is a valuable book for many reasons. For one thing, my understanding is that these paintings, sketches, etc. have never before been published in color, or at all, in any other books on Lawrence."Over the Line" also give you information on Lawrence's life, which was very interesting in its own right. Finally, these painting are simply a joy to look at, over and over, which this book will allow you to do.I strongly recommend that you get a hold of it! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars For Lit Majors--Or Anyone Else Who Appreciates English Lit
Most English majors face a daunting task in putting the vast spectrum of English literature into perspective. There is an infinity of books that focus on one tiny aspect of that spectrum, and a much smaller one volume text that one might find useful in preparing for a comprehensive examination.THE McGRAW-HILL GUIDE TO ENGLISH LITERATURE Volumes 1 and 2 attempt to summarize and analyze a 1,000 year span of an assortment of writings, ideas, and ages. Both texts have a similar structure:

Volume I:Old English
Middle English
The Renaissance
The 17th Century
The Restoration
The Neoclassical Age
The Emergence of the Novel

Volume II: The Romantic Age
Victorian Prose & Poetry
The Victorian Novel
Modern Poetry
The Modern Novel & Drama

Each age begins with a timeline of significant dates and events. Each entry contains a chronology for that work or author. The timeline is less helpful than the chronology in that it is difficult to make sense of data whose only connection is a connect the dots by date linking. The chronology is useful in that some attempt is made to show linkages between events in the author's life and his works. The real use of this text is a series of essay-type questions is posed with accompanying fully-written essay responses, exactly the sort of thing that students might wish to peruse before taking a test or instructors might wish to use as a source for that test.Authors Lawrence, Seifter, and Ratner have done a commendable job in eclectically sifting through a mountain of potential areas and writing about those that shaped the thoughts of that age.For example, in Volume 1, they discuss an author not often analyzed anywhere outside of the arcane trade journals--John Skelton, who wrote a satiric commentary (Colin Clout) on the world of a learned old man.Their clear essay makes a rather obscure poem come burstingly to life. True, they had to be selective.I would have appreciated more on Shakespeare and less on George Herbert, but that is quibbling. This guide is an indispensable auxialliary for anyone who needs the big picture of English literature scaled down to manageable size. ... [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_Love]

Women in Love is a novel by British author D. H. Lawrence published in 1920. It is a sequel to his earlier novel The Rainbow (1915), and follows the continuing loves and lives of the Brangwen sisters, Gudrun and Ursula. Gudrun Brangwen, an artist, pursues a destructive relationship with Gerald Crich, an industrialist. Lawrence contrasts this pair with the love that develops between Ursula and Rupert Birkin, an alienated intellectual who articulates many opinions associated with the author. The emotional relationships thus established are given further depth and tension by a homoerotic attraction between Gerald and Rupert. The novel ranges over the whole of British society at the time of the First World War and eventually ends high up in the snows of the Swiss Alps.

As with most of Lawrence's works, Women in Love caused controversy over its sexual subject matter. One early reviewer said of it, "I do not claim to be a literary critic, but I know dirt when I smell it, and here is dirt in heaps — festering, putrid heaps which smell to high Heaven."

5-0 out of 5 stars EYE OPENER
ASSATA BIOGRAPHY WAS FASCINATING, EYE OPENER THINGS I DID NT ABOUT HER, GREAT READ VERY POWERFUL WOMAN WHO DID NT GIVE UP. SO MUCH RESPECT FOR MS ASSATA ALL RESPECT IS DUE

4-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening/ inspiring/ and emotional
I was hesitant at first to read this book being that it was political and sounded nothing familiar to my world as a white youth in America. I actually got my hands on it when I was in jail, and reading about Assata's strength during her imprisonment awed and inspired me. I loved how her present trial was simultaneously told along with her life story switching back and forth from chapter to chapter. Her childhood rebellion, love of nature, and desire to make it in society reflected many similar qualities that I too possess. I found that a black woman and I had a lot in common though the nature of our oppression differed. I felt her pain when she hurt people and didn't realize it until it was too late all because of the brain washing American society had upon her. When she came to realize all the tranformations that African culture was going through to be more European like she found her true self and freedom from social pressures.
Most impressive is Assata's pure genius. She is an amazing writer, and wrote an opening statement during her trial that resembled the eloquence of MLK. It will literaly blow your socks off the way she confronts the racism in the jury.
With her wit and vivacious personality despite deathly circumstances, this young woman Assata will captivate the hearts of African's and American's alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Difficult
I'd only heard her story in snippets; she was a Panther, a revolutionary and a wanted woman. She has been lauded and lambasted and I believed that she was someone that I needed to learn more about. My education started by reading her biography.

From a literary standpoint, the book is beautiful.Well written, easy to follow and interspersed with her own poetry. For it's beauty however it is still a difficult story to read.Because it is a story of a woman whose eyes, mind and heart were wide open to the possibilities of freedom and equality but was faced repeatedly with inequality, injustice, persecution and racism. Most times her story was horrifying, particularly her imprisonment, sometimes she kept it light, when speaking of her childhood, her friendships, etc.But through all times, I would suggest that her story remains relevant and inspiring and makes the reader thirst for more knowledge of her and the movement for which she sacrificed so much for.

A true life story about the publisher of ASA Publishing Company who struggled within himself, began a heartfelt journey to succeed from living in a cardboard box on skidrow after mysteriously giving up his airline career by walking off the flightline at Continental Airlines and crash landing on 5th & Crocker in Downtown Los Angeles California, sleeping on the sidewalks by the Fred Jordan Mission. The testimony of his former life will open up our hearts towards those that are still caught between the dark walls of society, where there are men, women, children, and even families that are currently going through this type of addictive entrapment. This book also demonstrates the negative impact that booze and drugs has caused. 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!
Illiterate, uninformed, disorganized, free-flowing rant: obviously a weekend aggregation of Internet searches. Reads like a 5th grade class project -- and even in that case would merit no more than a D+. Of the book's 111 (not 120) pages, 24 are blank for the reader's "notes". Remaining pages filled with pictures, illustrations, and meaningless graphics in an attempt to disguise an amazing lack of content. Lists of long URLs and many sections of downloaded quotes. No index or table of contents. It does prove a point though: ANY book can be published!
