3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but not filling.
What are you looking for when you're reading a book about the world of Starcraft? That's really what it's all about.

The books really don't hold an order to the story line. There is no, this is a conintuance of the prior nature to the series. In fact I'm not even sure why they'd number the books. Three different authors telling three different stories isn't much to a series without a continuating plot line.

Well with the dymanics of it all the third books is not like the other two in more than one way. You're not getting a fill in of the story you already know. You're getting a side story of soldiers in the confederacy and their own ordeal. The books writing really has a basic style to it and isn't something I particularly prefer. I'd say at least 3% of it's content is the same thing being repeated or reidderated. And as you might have read in other reviews, the main character is far beyond cliche and lacks a lot of that strength that is needed for a dominate character. After reading the first two books with such strong outdrawn characters and then suddenly jumping, or falling into something so less substantial, it's quite depressing. Especially since the other characters don't really mean anything worth remembering.

All in all it's about what you want out of the book. If you're looking for a random starcraft story that you've probably assumed through the nature of the game, then this is your book. If you're looking for something epic, something to tighten your grasp of Starcraft, or even something that's well written you're stuck with the first two books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mormans in Sci FiPuleeeeaaassee Yuck
The story was a little to Heroic as in "Lets all give up our lifes so townfolk can escape" I did not know what was the reason untill on looking up the authorsspecs I found he "Hickman" was born in Utah and still lives there,

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.
I have been playing the starcraft games since they were first released in 1998. With no new games since then, except for the upcoming starcraft 2 in February, I resorted to reading the books. I think that this was a good book. It has an easy to follow plot and a pretty good story line. Some of the characters are a little iffy and some of the dialogue is cliche but overall, this is a great read for any starcraft enthusiast.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really good one!
Out of the three StarCraft novels, this book is really the most entertaining.

Unlike the linear, static plot of "Liberty's crusade" and the fairy-talish "Shadow of the Xel'Naga", this story is gritty, more realistic and far more belles-lettres like. It features tough inner experiences of the main character, the heroism and sacrife, the realities of war and even love.

A unique story telling manner makes me admire the author.

If there was ever a StarCraft movie, it should be like this novel.

A truly great book for for StarCraft fans or any sci-fi reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprised at the 3rd book.
The last book in the so called "trilogy" was a pleasant surprise for me.After the second book I almost didn't want to read "The Speed of Darkness", but as I got into the book, I could not put it down.

The author pays great attention to the details of the Starcraft universe, the units, vehicles, buildings, close to perfect.

But at the same time (as many of you pointed out already) this is a sci-fi book in a StarCraft universe not the other way around.

All in all it's a great read!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fast delivering, good stuff
Several short (and no so short) histories about our loved heroes that help us understanding really what's going on over the whole plot.

If you haven't tried yet, I encourage you to do it!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Children of the Lance
This takes place after the War of the Lance and tells a story of the heroe'skids, my favorite being Steel Brightblade, Sturm and Kitiara's son. They told me they are here to teach the gospel of Jesus Christ. I liked it a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars after test of the twins, comes the second generation
I was told by a friend that this book was not as good as chronicles or legends.
So I didn't buy it or read it.

I've found that to have been a mistake, since the book it very good.It binds together events happening in the test of the twins and the dragons of summer flame.
It may not involve the old heroes of the lance as much as previous books but brings fort new heroes, and foes.

I'd recommend this book to any dragonlance reader.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This was a good book. Seeing how the Queen of Darkness is trying to take over the world again but with a new set of heroes. The children of the main characters in the Dragonlance Chronicles are definately spit images of their parents. Heroic hearts combined with honed skills and excellent dialogue.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent book... but more a prologue than a novel
while i did enjoy this book.. it was a bit choppy but it sets up a great book in Dragons of Summer Flame... you can read summer flame without reading this but it would make alot more sense if you did... i would recommend it ... Read more

Product Description
Some authors spin stories. Some create characters. And some bring into being entire universes that were never before dreamed. . . .

In 1983 the literary world was surprised--and even shocked--when a paperback Dungeons and Dragons fantasy by an unknown author team rocketed to the top of the New York Times bestseller list and stayed there.

With more than fifteen million copies of their books in print, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman have appeared on bestseller lists--including twelve New York Times bestsellers--ever since that first Dragonlancesuccess, delighting, mystifying, intriguing, and above all, entertaining millions of readers with each new series of fantasy novels. Each series or cycle of their work is unique in that it brings into being an entire new universe, complete with its own creatures, history, geography and even physical (and magical) laws.

This invaluable literary guide and companion introduces both the authors and their worlds. Extensive biographical interviews with both Weis and Hickman reveal their characters, their separate histories, their ongoing working relationship, their years at TSR and in the gaming world, and their subsequent success--including the legendary Traveling Road Show that helped establish their success.

But the heart of this lavishly illustrated book is the worlds themselves. Realms of Dragons contains five separate, comprehensive, authoritative concordances--each complete from A to Z--that detail, explicate, explain, and often illustrate ever important character, event, element, and incident in every book in every series. It's all here--from the sea-elf Apoletta (Dragons of Spring Dawning) to the loony old wizard Zafnib (Nightsword), from Death Gate to Dragonlance to Starshield.

Weis and Hickman have taken their place with J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert Jordan, David Eddings, and Anne McCaffrey in the pantheon of modern fantasy. And this unique companion and guide illuminates their journey every step of the way.

Lavishly illustrated, thoroughly annotated, and carefully documented, Realms of Dragons is an incomparable tribute to the bestselling fantasy team of all time--a beautiful keepsake fans new and old will treasure. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Borrow it from the library
Like someone else said, the back cover is a lie - there are no maps. Basically I borrowed this book from the library because of the first 50 pages which contain interviews with Weis & Hickman. This is really interesting stuff, covering :
- their backgrounds
- how they got to TSR
- how the whole DragonLance project started
- how they got chosen to write the books and the incredibly short time frames they had - they wrote the first DragonLance book in under 2 months!

My advice, read this section, forget the rest. It ain't worth buying but definitely worth borrowing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference
If your looking for an autobiography, novel or a new story, you've come to the wrong place. This is a very detailed reference book FULL of information, with only a little new meterial (like about the author's lives). If you are a longtime fan of the author's, however, this can be agreat book to have. After having already read the books of Weis andHickman, reading this book can remind you what happened, clarify confusingpoints, or simply bring back memories of a great story.

3-0 out of 5 stars Short Sword in Long Scabbard
If you want to know more about the worlds created by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, this book will give you a good amount of information on the various settings. The bulk of the book is a comprehensive and considerablydetailed encyclopedia separated into five different sections -- each onededicated to a particular series (i.e. the Death Gate Cycle, theDragonlance Novels, etc.). The book is also wonderfully supplied withbeautiful full-color paintings from the novels, black and white photographsof the authors in the Interviews chapter, and a helpful book-by-bookanalysis of the authors' various works. The first problem, however, withthis potentially great work is that the description at the back of the bookmisleads the reader. It promises "numerous black-and-white DRAWINGSand MAPS to each world." This is false. There are absolutely NO MAPSwithin the book, and the only black and white pictures are mostlyphotographs. It's disappointing because detailed maps wouldhave greatlyaided the encyclopedia entries. And a well-structured timeline would havelikewise been invaluable and much appreciated. The encyclopedia entriesalso need more information. Some descriptions are only a sentence long. Inaddition, the book-by-book analysis in the first chapter completely leftout the Dragonlance Novels (which I find particularly sinful, because itwas the Dragonlance Series that catapulted Weis and Hickman to fame.) Somuch more could have been added visually. The writing content could havebeen packed with meatier annotations and previously unknown trivia. I guessI'll have to wait for another, worthier attempt at these magnificent fantasyrealms.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book
This book is really really cool. Weis and Hickman are awesome authors, and this book is great for fans of them. It has all their books, from the dragonlance to death gate to darksword, and even some of their solo workslike the star of the guardians. I love it, a definite good buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Return To Merilon
Joram, Saryon, Mosiah and Simkin enter the enchanting and magical city of Merilon. They have left the technologists, and Blachloch's corpse, behind.

En route, the dead man, the suffering catalyst, the devoted companion and the baffling magician are diverted to the enemy kingdom of Sharakan where they meet, befriend, rest and train with Prince Garald and his handpicked Cardinal Radisovik. It is here that we are given a glimpse at the true power of the darksword and the real nature of Simkin.

Returning - for some a first visit - to Merilon where Joram hopes to discover and claim his birthright is the bona fide beginning of the story the first part of which is the serendipitous meeting of Joram and Gwendolyn at the gates of the capital city. Matters, however, seem to be falling apart almost as soon as they appear to be improving. Much is revealed in discussions, investigations, at the castle and at Bishop Vanya's surreptitious hall where he passes judgment. Many positions are weakened and many others' seem to be lost forever.

As an aside, shrewd readers might have noticed several similarities between this land and earth. While names like Gwen, Lord Samuels and Maria or plants like dahlia and honeysuckle might be easy giveaways, the mention of an ancient history crammed with weaponry and a medical reference to Hippocrates are also clues to the same.Elsewhere, a discussion of salvation through divine grace versus as a reward for deeds, which occurs early in the Volume, hints at the personal beliefs of co-author Tracy Hickman. He is, of course, not only one of the fantasy genre's leading authors, but also a devout follower of LDS.

With much explained and the story moving fast the reader is left with a cliffhanger sure to be resolved in the customary third book of a fantasy trilogy. Triumph of the Darksword (Darksword Trilogy, The) will impart how the balance of power will be apportioned.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost good
Great condition, except for the page with a rather large chunk missing from it. Not a huge deal, however, and I am satisfied for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars couldnt put down
i literally could not put this book down!! i started out with an undying love for dragonlance and was kind of skeptical about trying anything else. but if you pick up anything by margaret weis i guarantee its worth your time!! and this trilogy is no exception.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Trilogy!!!
I had read Weis and Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends and loved them both and that's why when I saw this trilogy, I decided to buy it. And I liked it as much as the Dragonlance series. The story was excellent and I really liked Joram and Saryon. Definitely worth buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Early Work of Weis
This is a second book in a trilogy (most recently a fourth one was added... but it's not technically part of the series). Anywho~ It further develops the story. I would say it is appropriate for ages 10+. It's fun-loving and easy fantasy reading. I have read the series three times. Margaret Weis's books got me "into" fantasy several years ago. The flow of the story is smooth and the new twists and characters are excellent. If you haven't read the first of the series, you'll be a little lost, so go find yourself Forging the DarkSword.=)If you're looking for a taste of early Margaret Weis, this series is it. Might I also recommend The Rose of the Prophet series... ... Read more

The Desert of Desolation trilogy concludes as the heroes find themselves desperately seeking the spirit of the ancient Martek, in hopes of deliverance from the wrath of the Vizier Efreet.Their quest takes theminto one of the most ingenious dungeon settings ever devised - the MobiusTower, where time literally stands still - an assassin's arrow hangssuspended inches from its target's breast, the torchlight glows solid, unmoving and cold, and only the ghosts still wander free... of course, that'suntil the chaos of distance and time distortion magic kicks in!Anunforgettable classic for levels 7-9, highest recommendation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great endings
I think the Legacy of the darksword is a great finish and a must read if you've read the Darksword Trilogy. It;s the kkind of book that wraps up alot, expands on the original story, and still leaves you asking for more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!!
I have read and enjoyed the Darksword Trilogy, so when I saw this, I had to buy it, and it did not disappoint me, it is every bit as good as the trilogy. I just loved it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good time-killer, noticeable flaws
I was fairly interested in this book when I started reading it, and I will admit, some of the story kept me interested enough to continue reading it until the end.But the book was lacking depth in key areas and could have done with a more cohesive plot.Worse still was the ending, which not only ruined the plot as a whole, it also thudded into place in a graceless and poorly written clump.Definitely enjoyed the potential of this book much more than the book itself.

4-0 out of 5 stars very enjoyable
the book was hard to put down it is just as good as the others in the series

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst W&H book ever
I was a big fan of the original series, but this capstone is just dreadful.Either my tastes have matured, or W&H forgot how to write well. The characters are all flat and undeveloped (to those who say you have to read the earlier stuff first, I did, but sorry, this is 20 years later, every single character should have changed at least a little and we need to see that). The plot was lame and really only got up to speed in the last 50 pages, so the first 200 pages are a total waste of time.I'd still recommend their earlier stuff, but avoid this one, unless you want to read one of the worst fantasy books of all time. The ending is so ridiculous it made me laugh, Deus Ex Machina for sure.Maybe they were having personal troubles when they wrote this one, but still, an editor should have been on top of it.I guess since W&H sell so well, all they want is the name.If no stars were an option, I'd have selected it.I feel cheated not just for wasting my time on this book, but for ruining wonderful memories of this series, which had been one of my favorites back in the day. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Wasn't as good as I remember
I read the Dragonlance books as a child and I am now going back through them to decide which ones to keep. This book is definitely not one of the books I will keep. I agree with other reviews that Tasslehoff's story is good. It is very entertaining, but since it is only ~70 pages I can't justify keeping the book for that reason. Douglas Niles and Richard Knaak's tales are decent, but I wasn't exactly thrilled by the other stories. I remember the other Tales books being more entertaining. With all that being said if I was still a huge Dragonlance fan and I saw this book in the library or at a used book store it might be worth picking up for the few good stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun read.
A great book to read if you just can't get enogh of the original DL trilogies. The book is full of fun stories that will give you a little more insight into Kyrnn during the war of the lance.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well...
I have to give all the short story novels 3 stars. There are some stories you won't like but they'll 2-4 really great ones that will make the books worth the price.

3-0 out of 5 stars One Awesome story, One pretty good one,and lots of bad ones.
I agree with the other guy who said that there was only one good story. The Story that Tasslehoff Promised he Would Never, Ever Tell (which is the real name of the story) was spectacular. It captured the mystery behindthe lances. Were they magical, or just steel? The ending of the storystill leaves this mystery unsolved. That is excellent literature.Anotheris war machines. It captures the humorous aspect of gnome machinery and agnome of many working to perfect his life quest. The rest is absolutelyterrible. One other note...I expected the Vingaard Campaign to be awesome. It was terrible.
