As Hugh's steps approached the town, the sky was thickly laced with cloud, and fitful gleams of a watery sunshine were all that penetrated the western horizon. Absorbed in perplexed consideration, he took no note of the weather. While he was resting at a cross-roads before entering the last valley, a riderless horse came clattering down the road from the north, bearing a handsome new side-saddle. The pace was a leisurely gallop, as though the horse, having spent his first mad impulse, had time to notice the surroundings and enjoy his accomplished freedom. At sight of the young man seated beneath the sign-post, the runaway stopped short, snorted, then with delicate deliberation prepared to dash past this possible obstacle to his freedom. Proclaiming his spirit with a wave of his tail, he trotted slowly forward. It was a lively, handsome beast, more playful than wild, and the young man, reaching out suddenly his hand, was lucky enough to catch the loose curb and wise enough to humor the captive by running a few steps with him until he could bring him to a stand. There were angry glances from the large brown eyes, but the animal accepted capture with some grace."A fine beast!" the youth thought, wondering whether he could mount him and thus ride back up the north roaduntil he met the owner. But the aristocratic art of horsemanship not having come within his experience, he concluded that the safer course would be to lead the animal. Patting his smooth neck, he turned him around. The horse examined his captor, snorted once or twice, then consented to walk calmly by the youth's side. A short space up the roa... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Soviet Naval Strategy
Commander Robert W. Herrick, U.S. Navy (Retired), examines the ofensive-defensive cycles through which naval strategy has evolved over the last half century with in the Soviet Union.

This study is primarily an internal historical analysis, in which the author progresses from a discussion of the beginning of Soviet sea power to an evaluation of the Soviet Navy's present strength - a large, strong subamrine force, including a ballisic and homing missile capability, a modest ASW force, and a surface force with surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles.

Despite its forays into distant seas, Commander Herrick contends that the Soviet Navy continues to be strategically defensive; this comprehensive appraisal of the evolution of Soviet Naval strategy should go far in contributing to an understanding of current and prospective developments within the Soviet Navy, and, hopefully, to further discussions of that Navy's strategic potential.

4-0 out of 5 stars no title
This was one of the best books I have read in a while.Wonderful feminist story.Make a marvelous movie for someone like a young Kathleen Turner.Spans a woman's life from the time she is twelve til she is 42; ends in about 1922.Starts with a harrowing scene of the death of her father from a sawblade. If written a little heavy-handed, still manages a very good story, even illicit sex and adultery.Lots of good scenes for film script.Lilla manages to overcome the stilted mores of her mother and the times.Takes place in Chicago and Wilmette.Herrick obviously a local boy.Much comparison could be made here between Lilla and her mother and many mothers and daughters of today. In the book, the two can never come to a meeting of the minds .They have totally different mind-sets, morals, values, etc. They just do not speak the same language. ... Product Description
Robert Welch Herrick (1868-1938) was a novelist who was part of a new generation of American realists. His novels deal with the turbulence of industrialized society and the turmoil it can create in sensitive, isolated people. He was also briefly acting-Governor of the United States Virgin Islands in 1935. From 1905 to 1923, he was a professor of literature at the University of Chicago, during which time he wrote thirteen novels. Among those considered to be his finest was Web of Life (1900). His art was free of dogmatic isms and achieves its power from a melancholic fatalism. He dreaded the brutality and ignorance of the mob as much as he despised the avarice and ennui of the upper class. He was suspicious of political doctrines and utopian legislation, feeling that true progress for human happiness must always lie in individuals making moral choices. His works include: Literary Love-Letters and Other Stories (1897), The Man Who Wins (1897), The Gopsel of Freedom (1898), The Real World (1901), Their Child (1903), Together (1908) and A Life for a Life (1910). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Realism vs. Idealism

Robert Herrick was a novelist who straddled the fence between realism and idealism. Setting his novels in realistic situations, he often developed characters who faced and then transcended them according to idealistic standards. Temptation and the breakdown of self-control are the realistic elements of this story which the main character, Jack Pemberton, must overcome. The book is all about Pemberton, from his dismal childhood, through Harvard, his developing career as a lawyer, and finally his going west. Passion is the great temptation, and it comes with Elsie Mason, a bored social-climber who tries to seduce Jack. But Jack resists and thus remains mater of his own destiny. With this new-gained self-knowledge, Jack is able to go out into the real world of business and "fight the good fight." Despite the ending being a bit stiff, Herrick writes well, and the story is fast paced. Not as good as some of his later, better developed, novels, it was a moderate early success. ... Read more
