Dark Horse
I really enjoyed reading this book. I love stories about horses and them communicating with humans. The book was a bit predictable and it could have used a little more romance, but it was great.

Amazing book
this si an amazing book. if you like a bit of war, an amazing storyline a just a tiny bit of romance, you'll liove it. Unforunetly it is out of print now, but perhaps it can be reprinted for the next generation, I know it's worth it.

A Future Classic!
Dark Horse is on par with early Anne McCaffrey and Mercedes Lackey stories, and contains many of the elemtnts that made both the Valdemar and Pern series popular. Magical black horses choose and accompany "good" mages, protecting them from evil magic and acting as advisor and friend.

Dark Horse is the story of a young girl who is orphaned when her entire tribe is killed by a rival tribe that is led by an evil mage. She rescues and is rescued by a Hunnuli, a giant protector-horse, and is adopted by another tribe. I am disappointed that after only five books that this series has come to an early and undeserved demise.

Another great Darl Horse book...

*takes deep breath* athlone RULES! i love the humaness that is shown in this book, the way he is and how he expresses himself. maybe i'm an idiot (ok, i am), but i think he's soooo adorably funny. :-) ah yes. nara rocks, too. how could you not love a book with horses in it?

A book you can't put down
I could seriously not put down this book. You get drawn into the intense plot right away, and you die not knowing what turn in the story is written on the next page. I have lost sleep reading this book, and I know it showsjust how skilled an author Mary H. Herbert is. Recommendation; read thebook!

Great Book
All Along I kept wondering what she had in store for the Khulinin clan after all she kept leaving spaces open in the other books to remind you of them. I loved how in this book she answered that question and also spread out into the world of the other people on the plains besides the clans. I do feel the book was a bit sketchy in places.Gabrial I thought could be a little stronger then she was and More info on the mysterious clan in the valley could have been told, but over all this was a good read.

great story, first one read though
I somehow stumbled onto this series and began with book three, City of the Sorcerors. I planned on reading the book again, as i do w/ most books i read.but, the book was lost, and i i could not finish, because i couldnot remember the titla, i recently found it and i am excited to read theentire series. :)

Good book for non-english readers.
The book is very good for non-english readers with medium level of Englishlanguage. It has a thrilling plot, the language is rather easy (forcamparison: I wrote down 20 words from 1 page while reading "TheX-files" and 3 words from 1 page while reading this book). Therearen't very many rare words (that I couldn't manage to find in mydictionary). I don't regret the time, I spend while reading this book.

Great Series gone wrong
I love the Dark Horse series, always have. Dark Horse and Lightening's Daughter were amazing. Valorian was passable, and City, well, it looked really promising. The old charachters were not true to type, and the new charachters... Hebert didn't do enough to really potray the complex charachter of Kelene, and the plot was very generic. The quality of writing also suffered. I was so disappointed with this book that I don't plan on reading Winged Magic, as Herbert seems to be groping for material and quality. ... Read more

Interesting and adventures I like this book alot.
This book is good in that it's fast paced and funny Linsha is an adventuerus not so rule book morals as some characters you read about these days.Linsha works hard and isn't perfect soshe's easier to understand than charecters that always do whats right. If your perfect frankly-you're boring.

A good bridge novel
This is the second book in the Dragonlance: Linsha Trilogy. In the first book in this trilogy we were introduced to a lot of story set up and character building.

Yet, this novel falls short of the preceding novel. I'm not really sure if I can put into words the 'why' behind that. It's not a bad book by any means, but for me Herbert set the bar fairly high and this book didn't follow through.

With that said, Iw ould still recommend this book to Dragonlance fans as it certainly progresses the story after the War of Souls. ... Read more

A very interesting collection of material.
I actually read this book when I was in 6th or 7th grade. I could tell it was "for adults" and yet I found many good stories and rhymes in it suitable for my own uses (especially that story about the dog!) -- and I remember reading about some of the dark meanings behind the clapping games and jumprope songs I played as a kid. It was interesting to read it at that age and recognize both the things "kids" didn't "get" about the games, rhymes etc. but also the things that "adults" didn't "get" about our use of these things.

Great book, but not for preschoolers
Oops! Whoever assigned the reading level to this book was confused.This is a book for adults on the history and meaning of children's folklore.I first read it for a class I took on multicultural education, and now use it sometimes in a college course I teach on play.It's fascinating and bringsback a lot of childhood memories.It has words to rhymes I had forgottenand directions for making the fortune tellers we used when I was in gradeschool.It's a wonderful book, but parents who order it for their youngchildren will be disappointed!

Story good; Writing weak at best
The story itself is an interesting one, and Herbert sets it up well. But her writing is weak and clunky. She's all about telling, not showing, and randomly jumps to other POVs (of minor characters) for a single paragraph to show they believe/disbelieve in Valorian, rather than letting their actions show it.

Frankly the fact that the hero is named Valorian and the evildoer Tyrannis should be enough to clue you in that Herbert's writing is anything but subtle.

The First Hunneli And His Master
Valorian is the first novel in the Dark Horse series, a prequel to the other volumes."Five hundred years before before the time of Gabria, the mage-heroine of [the other novels], the last remnants of the once great Clans struggle to survive in the barren foothills west of the Darkhorn Mountains." They need to cross the mountains to the vast Ramtharin Plains, but the high peaks and Tarnish Empire hold them back in the Bloodiron Hills.

In this novel, the hunter Valorian has shared meat with a group of Tarnish legionnaires and overheard talk of the legion pulling back to Tarnov, leaving the Ramtharin Plains unoccupied.Also, he heard mention of a Wolfeared Pass in the mountains which is large enough for supply wagons.He begins searching for the pass, but has had no luck for three days.He has wandered up through the foothills onto a ridge crest, but rain shrouds the peaks and drives him to shelter.When the rain blows through, Valorian returns to the crest and calls upon the gods to show him a way to save his people.A bolt of pure power arcs down through his sword and helmet, his body, and his horse to the rocky ground.They are both dead before they know it.

Valorian finds himself in a vast, unutterable silence.He is standing over his own body, and that of his horse, smoke arising from the corpses.However, he is not alone, for Hunnel, his stallion, is also there in spirit, if not quite in body.The land around them is slowly fading away.The two are facing down the Harbringers, the escorts of the dead, when the goddess Amara intervenes to save them.

It seems that some gorthlings have stolen her crown, her brother Sorh thinks her requests for help are a game, and she has no power over her brother's creatures.She asks Valorian and Hunnel to retrieve the crown and gives him the power of magic to use in the quest.She then returns him to the Habringers for escort to the realm of the dead.

When Valorian returns from that realm, he is dirty, tired and has a pounding headache.Moreover, Hunnel has a wound like a brand mark on his side shaped like a lightning bolt.Wondering about his dreams, he mounts Hunnel and goes home.However, he soon learns that he can use magic just as in the dream.Was it a dream or not?

This novel is the backstory of the migration of the clans to the Plains and the occurance of magic users among them.Valorian has other tasks ahead of him, including giving Hunnel the power to mindspeak, before his time is past, but he and his people will now be accompanied by the Dark Horses, Hunnel's descendents.

Recommended for Herbert fans and anyone else who enjoys a good fantasy story about riders of the plains.

Names Remembered.
This book is a gem. I read many books when I was in middle school, and the Dark Horse Clan books are some of the few I actually remember. I suggest you read at least one of these books, andI hpe you can get your hands onthem. Try your Local library.

Could have been better, but not bad for what it is.
Stan Brown et al., Bertrem's Guide to the War of Souls, vol. 2 (Wizards of the Coast, 2002)

I came to read this book before the actual War of Souls trilogy thanks to my library. They had the book listed in the catalog as just Dragonlance, rather than by its actual title, and I was intrigued. So I put it on hold, and this is what ended up on my desk.

Needless to say, a person who has read the War of Souls trilogy is likely to get far more out of this than I did; the characters will likely be more familiar, and the situations in which said characters find themselves will probably have more meaning. So I can't really speak to how good the book is on that level; all I can talk about is the quality of writing.

It really only flags that greatly in one place, but unfortunately, that one place is in the book's longest piece, an almost-seventy-page monster by Stan Brown whose unfortunate placing very early in the book causes it to drag early on. Brown's other monstrous piece in here (weighing in at over forty pages) goes more quickly. Don Perrin and Mary H. Herbert, the other two contributors, are time-tested and goat-approved Dragonlance writers, and you can be generally assured when you pick anything up from either, you're going to get a good story. (One of Herbert's, "Mirage," will bring home the "you'll get more out of it if you've read the War of Souls trilogy" angle better than anything else in the book.)

Not bad, not bad at all, but read the War of Souls books first, and skim Stan Brown's first story. ** ½

Fairly entertaining but still a little bit half baked
This, apparently last book in the Bertrems Guide series was very much in the same tradition as the previous. This also consists of a lot of journals and reports duruing the time of the War of Souls storyline.
Three authors have contributed to this one, Don Perrin, Mary H. Herbert and Stan!. Of the three authors I liked Mary's journals and reports best. I think that her little story about Sara Dunstan's dragon Cobalt was terrific.
Stan!'s report from Schallsea was also fairly entertaining, but I still found myself rereading a lot of stuff. Most of the descriptions of Schallsea, I had already read somewhere else in the Dragonlance saga. There's both Citadel of Light and The Silver Stair that describes this place, but I still liked it.
Don Perrin wrote some very boring articles I think. The best of his stories was that about the Urkhan, which was fairly interesting because you got to know how the Tractor Worms(Uops) breed!! The worst was that one about the origins of aflicted kender which I found quite boring.

Overall, this book was okay. Some of the stories was interesting and entertaining, but I still find myself not liking these kinds of books. They feel a little halfbaked, because it isn't an anthology neither a general book. There's no characters that you could possible come to love in a book like this, so in a way i', glad that it is the last in this series. ... Read more
