Christian Friedrich Hebbel (1813-1863) war ein deutscher Dramatiker und Lyriker. Durch ein zweijähriges Reisestipendium des dänischen Königs Christian VIII. wurde ihm die weite Welt eröffnet. Zunächst reiste er nach Paris. Dort schrieb er das Trauerspiel Maria Magdalena, welches im Jahre 1843 fertig wurde und bis heute sein größter Erfolg blieb. In Wien, wo Hebbel bis zu seinem Tod lebte, konnte er sich ungestört seiner literarischen Produktion widmen. Dort erhielt er auch öffentliche Anerkennung und wurde schließlich als erster mit dem neu geschaffenen Schillerpreis ausgezeichnet. Hebbel schrieb vor allem Dramen, u.a. Agnes Bernauer (1851), Gyges und sein Ring (1854) sowie Die Nibelungen (1861). Während seines gesamten Lebens zeigte Hebbel soziales und politisches Engagement. 1849 kandidierte er erfolglos für die Frankfurter Nationalversammlung und in seinen Werken macht er oft die sozialen Probleme seiner Zeit zum Thema. Weitere Werke des Autors sind u. a.: Judith (1840), Der Diamant (1841), Anna (1847), Julia und König Peter (1847), Schnock (1848), Herodes und Mariamne (1848) und Mutter und Kind (1857). ...
