4-0 out of 5 stars Third in the Series
This is the third book in the Sorrowful Mysteries of Brother Athelstan series. This novel combined with the early books in the Hugh Corbett series is one of Paul Doherty's earlier offerings and he has since written many more books and is now an established author of medieval novels and has also added a number of novels on Egypt to his ever growing list of titles. Having said that it is one of his earlier offerings does not mean that it is inferior to his current books, quite the opposite. The Hugh Corbett mysteries were and are extremely popular and Paul Doherty has found another winner with the Brother Athelstan series.

Sir John Cranston, coroner of London, while at a diplomatic banquet is challenged by the powerful John ofGaunt to solvea murder mystery in the space of two weeks. Regretting his actions almost immediately Sir John turns to his friend and secretary Brother Athelstan.

Athelstan cannot however give the mystery his full attention as renovation work at St. Erconwald's has unearthed a skeleton, but who was the skeleton and when did they die? There is also the question of whether Athelstan's friend and secret love Benedicta is really the widow she believes herself to be. With his parishioners constantly squabbling amongst themselves it would seem that Brother Athelstan is in for a busy time. ... Read more

With one foot swathed in history and another striding into the nuclear age, India frustrates, challenges and stimulates. This award-winning guide covers the lot, from Keralan backwaters to Himalayan peaks.

Features: 205 detailed maps including a full colour country map with highlights; thousands of places to stay and eat for all budgets; colour section on India's religions; vital warnings on health risks, potential scams & regions in conflict; language guide to get you chatting to the locals.Amazon.com Review
Firmly ensconced in the budget travel canon, Lonely Planet:India has become as essential to subcontinental backpacker cultureas the Himalayan hill stations, Arabian Sea beaches, and craftyrickshaw drivers it describes. Beyond the frank, thorough coverage ofthe country's highlights and pitfalls, indispensable maps and a snazzyfull-color guide to India's religions make this sturdy tome anendlessly useful one-stop reference. Though the emphasis is on"budget" travel, there are hotel and restaurant picks to accommodateyou whether your budget is $10 or $500 a day.The book's only problemis that to some degree, it's a victim of its own success--it can bedifficult to get off the beaten path when every English-speakingbackpacker in South Asia is carrying the same guide.Fortunately, given India's (and the book's) seemingly endless charms, there's stillenough to go around. --Andrew Nieland ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Complete acquaintance with Varanasi and its special places..
The insight into the tourist attractions in a place like Varanasi has been carefully illustrated. The authors seem to have taken a lot of pain to satisfy the tourist's spiritual and traveller's instinct.Special mention must be given to the "Yoga Clinic and Center for Meditation" where Guruji Shri Prakash Shankar Vyas blesses and graces the wandering, restless, inquisitive mind. I personally visited him and have been associated with him since then for the meditation taught by him stands a world apart from the rest of the institutional claims that we come across in various parts of the world. The most remarkable feature here is the belief of achieving your goal on your own and not through any so commonly pronounced magic. For all those who wish to know in this area this place is the temple of understanding and experimenting till one does not realize his aim. Edword.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only one book you must take it with you to India
I cant believe how previous reveiewer criticized this book by staing "wrong map, description...etc."!!! This is not true! Those wrong reviewers must be working for other travel guide publishers or must be the ones just laid off from LP. HAHAHA

I have travelled India three times. I travelled there more than six months. I had three guidebooks with me since I was bagpacking alone. LP is the only one with exact map, right price, description..etc. LP is updated with newer editions alomst every year. SO almost everything in the book is up to dated unlike other guides. It is very informative and even fun to read.

If this is not the book you need for travelling India, there must be nothing else!

2-0 out of 5 stars Everyone'sobsessed with Lonely Planet!
I was in India earlier this year and as it was my first trip out of my own country I made the mistake of presuming that the Lonely Planet guide would be the best as it is the best known. After struggling with it for a few weeks, I pretty much stopped using it. My criticisms of it would include -poor maps and outdated information on things such as banks and costs. These are not things that particulaly bothered me after I had worked out that The Lonely Planet wasn't actually a bible, but just a tool for travel. I think the Lonely Planets biggist problem is that everyone has a copy and is out there doing exactly the same thing as everyone else. In parts of India such as Calcutta, Darjeeling and Sikkim, this wasn't such an issue because there were'nt so many tourists. The hotels I stayed at were generally how they were described in "The Book" , the prices were right and the people unaffected and friendly. Sometimes I was the only westerner staying in a hotel. But the places that were unaffected were few and far between. Most places I would go the Indians were all obsessed with the power the Lonely Planet had over travellers. For example, In Agra, there has been a sceme going where a resturant will purposely poison a tourist and then get a cut from the hospital from the unfortunate victims travel insurance. This is good advice and I must admit that I didn't risk eating at any other place other than that recommended, but the Indians had taken full advantage of this and all the resturants were incredibly expensive as a result. While this is not a direct fault of Lonely Planets I would definately suggest getting a lesser known guide, such as The Rough Guide, so that you don't spend your whole trip surrounded by Lonely Planet readers.

1-0 out of 5 stars not worth it!
This book had me lost in Bharatpur, stranded in Rajasthan, and completely confused in Cochin. The maps are mediocre, and the bulk of it generally not very useful. The only useful parts the ones that tell you how to get into and out of major cities, and where you can change your money. Otherwise, do not follow this guidebook--not only will you be following the tracks of every tourist in India, but also because you will be as lost as every other tourist in India.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent generalInformation but specifics can be confusing.
The information about the cities, states, regions and religions is excellent.I am still using this book as a reference guide two years later. The explanations of how the cities such as Bombay came into existence, how the culture has developed and how the locals go about their business are engaging.

However, the maps are very disorientating to the point of being un-usable (I found). We tried to travel round Bombay using the guide and we kept getting lost.If you are travelling about a bit on a schedule and can't afford to get lost or very delayed then you should take a proper map of every where you will go and take a compass.

The Lonely Planet descriptions of the entertainments like the Beaches in Bombay was spot on but their judgment of the hotels was difficult to gauge. Hotels that sounded good ended up being unworthy of a mention, in our opinion, where as right next door smart clean places were not included. The difficulty is that the Guide-Book doesn't make comparisons to anything you are already familiar with so it takes a while and a bit of expereience to know what they are talking about.

When you buy this book check that all the pages are included. We only noticed when we were in India that about ten pages in the centre and a few here and there throughout were completely blank, which could have been disastrous.

The Lonely Planet came into it's own when we came back to Bombay from Goa and had to find accomodation for one night before going to Hyderabad. We spent the journey to Bombay reading the guide and knew where we were going to go for a hotel. It was already getting dark when we got to Victoria station and opened the Lonely Planet again and began to telephone the hotels. We found a room within minutes. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A handy guide and a good overarching idea
The idea of driving from Adelaide, in South Australia, right 'up the guts' of the Australian continent through to Darwin in the Northern Territory is a pretty nifty one. I've been lucky enough to do exactly that spread over two different trips - the southern half with a tour group and the second as a father & son road trip around a year ago. As such I can attest that this guide book to Central Australia is quite useful as a primer and does discuss a great many point of interest in a fairly factual style. One reviewer decried the lack of accuracy regarding parts of South Australia and in particular Kangaroo Island but I cannot comment on that as I've not been to KI since around 2003.

Much of the format of this work follows the basic LP layout so you shouldn't have any dramas finding what you want. Also the way the book follows in chronological order a one way trip through the centre of the country makes it an easily digestible work. A clutch of photographs at the start of the book add a touch of colour and all I up feel that this book - or any updated version when they get around to it - would make a good companion for anybody considering such a journey. Along with detailed road maps of course and hey, do yourself a favour and DON'T rent a 4WD as just about all the roads you'll be driving on are bitumen (I see so many tourist paying high rental fees for these gas guzzlers when you are almost certain not to need one, and they are easily rented at places like Alice Springs if you ever really really want to go somewhere that 4WD is necessary).

So that's my two cents worth!

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than the rest
The Lonely Planet guide to Australia is the best and most complete I have yet seen.As with any travel guide they miss a lot, but for the areas I know, what they miss probably is not very important to many travelers. There does seem to be a very slight bias toward the college age backpacker traveler, but perhaps most folks my age are on package tours anyway. This one beats Frommer's hands down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent travel guide
This is a thorough, well researched, detailed, well written guide to travel in the Northern Territory of Australia. It's loaded with valuable information, especially for people who want a bit of adventure and who travel with their minds fully engaged. Lonely Planet deserves special accolades for their emphasis on ethics and etiquette for foreign travelers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated and lacks research
Unfortunatly, this is perhaps the only book widely available in the US specifically on Southern Australia, which has many wonderful opportunities for the nature and/or wine loving tourist. This book, however, is sorely outdated and in many instances just wrong.I am speaking specifically about the portions written on Kangaroo Island and the south coast. From my experience thus far it seems likely that the author never even visited these places, but is simply working off of word of mouth and other "primary" sources.I generally swear by Lonely Planet guides, but this one is an exception.I hope Lonley Planet puts out a new edition soon with a new author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Especially for those seeking more depth than the usual Australia-wide coverage can offer
There's a lot to do in South Australia: so much that it deserves a book of its own separate from just a generic travel guide to the entire country - and Adelaide & South Australia serves just this purpose, allowing the visitor to focus on the region's many offerings. Excellent small maps accompany clear descriptions of accommodations, eating, sightseeing, and natural wonders. With its information-packed pages, it's a 'must' for any destination-oriented traveler planning a visit to the region; especially for those seeking more depth than the usual Australia-wide coverage can offer.

The French are attacking the southern ports and peasants are planning a revolt organized by a mysterious leader who proclaims himself “IRA DEI,” the anger of God. In desperation, Gaunt turns to Sir John Cranston to catch the killer and recover a vanished king’s ransom in gold. Together with his ally Brother Athelstan, Cranston must face threats from the most powerful classes as well as attacks from the seedy underworld—along with a chilling exorcism—in order to bring a subtle murderer to justice.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Fourth Book in the Series
This is the fourth book in the Sorrowful Mysteries of Brother Athelstan series.

The year is 1379, England is a seething mass of discontent. John of Gaunt has the English crown and the English are less than happy with this hard and domineering man who has grabbed at the opportunity to rule as Regent. So much so that the peasants are planning a revolt. The revolt is being organised through a network of go betweens and Brother Athelstan is worried that some of his parishioners may have been ill advised and secretly joined those who wish to bring John ofGaunt down.

When some of Gaunt's plans are foiled by a series of murders the Regent is incensed and calls on the services of Sir John Cranston and his friend and secretary Brother Athelstan to assist in solving the crimes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Gaunt, Sorrowful and the Coroner
Author Paul Doherty is his usual competent self in this fourth outing in the Sorrowful Mysteries of Brother Athelstan. In 1379, John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, effectively rules England as the Regent for young King Henry VI. But the kingdom is seething with discontent; sinister plots seem to abound, even in the royal palace-or especially in the royal palace. But not just there. A peasant revolt seems imminent, led by someone calling himself Ira Dei, the "Anger of God." The 100 Years' War erupts once more after a time of relative peace. The English are losing their hard-won territories in France, and raids on the English coast are in the offing. What conspiracies are adding to the danger? Gaunt brings together some of London's most important merchant princes to try to establish order, only to have his plans ruined by a series of murders. Gaunt calls on Sir John Cranston, the coroner of London, and his clerk Brother Athelsan to get to the bottom of things. I don't care for the stereotypical portrayal of Cranston over the course of this series-always drunk or getting drunk, boisterous, etc. His obesity I can handle, but fat and drunk are overly emphasized. To me drunk is neither funny nor endearing, especially as a staple attribute in one the focal characters. The conflicted life and emotions of Brother Athelstan, however, are well portrayed, and Doherty (who originally published this series under the pen name of Paul Harding) puts his historical knowledge and craftsmanship into another good outing, though the emphasis on sordid detail and daily filth in 14th century English life may be a bit much for some readers. ...
