4-0 out of 5 stars Too bad the author lived in the 19th Century
Alexander Stephens was a U.S. Representative from Georgia prior to southern secession, and the Vice-President of the Confederate States under Jefferson Davis during the Late Unpleasantness.Diminutive in nature but large in wit, he once retorted to a colleague who insulted him by stating that he could eat him for breakfast by replying, "Well Senator, if you should eat me, you would have more brains in your stomach than you ever had in your head."

Stephens was certainly intelligent. In addition to the book under review, he also wrote "A Constitutional View of the Late War Between the States," a scholarly defense of the southern right of secession.

In this volume, Stephens does a solid job of tracing the key principles of American history from the colonial age through 1872.It is written in a readable narrative style accessible to the thoughtful junior high and high school student.

I give it four stars instead of five only because Stephens did us a disservice by not living in our generation and therefore ending his history so abruptly!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Different Type of History Book
"History of the United States" by Stephens is a refreshing look at the history of this nation. It is refreshing in that Stephens has no agenda, is not concerned with political correctness, and is not catering to anyone. The book was written in 1872, just seven years after the end of the Civil War, so the thoughts of that era were very much on the author's mind.

Readers should understand that the book is geared towards students and serves as a general history.Stephens himself states (although at the end of the book) what the book is NOT:a study of economic trends, inventions, explorations, etc., although some of these aspects are touched upon. The best parts of the book are the early chapters concerning the settlement of the colonies and the last few chapters which summarize the Civil War.A bit too much detail (for me anyway) is given to the Presidential elections.I would rather have read in more detail about the policies and actions of each President.Again, understand that this is a general history book, a starting point if you will, and not a detailed study.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good companion book to any study of American History
A.H. Stephens was one of the foremost legal scholars of the 19th Century. This book would make an excellent companion volume for any young person interested in history. By tracing the development of the colonies in North America through Reconstruction, it serves as a good examination of the time period. It also would serve well to educate the public, about the time period without the modern trappings of political correctness. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Biography
John C. Miller's biography of Alexander Hamilton is an excellent read. Miller goes through Hamilton's life from the West Indies to his death at the hands of Aaron Burr i 1804. Hamilton, a man of intense ambition and ego, emerges as a brilliant and flawed man. Hamilton was a proponent of strong central government, had no faith in ordinary people, and believed the wealthy were meant to rule. Miller brings out all of these views and provides good commentary. He outlines Hamilton's proposed government at the Constitutional Convention: an executive and senate appointed for life, the executive with an absolute veto, governors and judges appointed by the executive for life, with an absolute veto over their assemblies. If you want to see the real Hamilton this is the biography. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great American--greater than that fool Jefferson
ALEXANDER HAMILTON: AN INTIMATE PORTRAITby Noemie Emery. A psychological biography of the man who, along with George Washington, did more than anyone else to create and establish this country in spite of the best efforts of the British, Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr to destroy it.A reasonably book, though as indicated, very heavy on the psychology and less on an actual narrative.Makes the interesting point that, at his core, Hamilton was simply too good a person to function against the malevolent likes of Jefferson, who destroyed his reputation, and Burr who killled him. Also strongly suggests that the infamous duel was a form of suicide by, in one stroke, Hamilton would achieve the heroic death he always wanted, stop a growing seccesionist movement that Jefferson's policies was inspiring and destroy the career of the man who was its driving force Burr. I rather like that and it does make perfect sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Psychological profile of a flawed Founding Father
Before he was killed in the celebrated dual, Hamilton was a facinating and often bizarre individual, one of the many flawed characters who gave birth to our remarkable Federal system. This book is less about his Federalist policies than about his psychological makeup and personal scandals. It doesn't go into much detail about his government career or economic theories, but it is easy to read and provides plenty of entertainment. It turns out, Hamilton and Burr were made for each other. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Party Leaders;Sketches
Written in 1854 and published the next year, this book is fascinating in providing personal sketches of distinguished Americans Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, Andrew Jackson,Henry Clay and John Randolph with many references to otherprominent men who were their contemporaries. The author's
analysis is interesting not only in the spirited description of the individuals profiled but in his comparison of each of them with their political antagonists. The unique perspective he brings a man whose life overlapped some of these figures is worth a read for history or politics buffs. His admiration and defense of some he buttresses with argument. His passion is clear.
His oratorical style is typical of the time yet conveys a vivid impression of his subjects, and reminds one of a time before soundbites and simple words geared to a mass audience. ... Read more
