Product Description
Alexander Hamilton's profound influence on American life is well-documented. Less well-appreciated is the story of how Hamilton s works travelled abroad; leaders in Germany, Japan, Taiwan and South Korea came to keenly appreciate the relevance of Hamilton's works to the modernisation challenges facing their own nations. This book reveals East Asian leaders close association with Hamiltonian thought and practice, and shows that American and East Asian economies share common foundations of state activism that transcend political rhetoric.

The latest Wall Street debacle of 2007-09 has grown into a global financial crisis. Yet, it is far from unique either in the level of unbridled speculation on display, or the pro-activist response of the federal government in intervening to prevent systemic failure. This book argues that the future prosperity of not only the USA, but also East Asia, will be defined not by the response to the financial crisis itself but the willingness or otherwise of the political leadership to embrace Hamilton s central intellectual insight: the state cannot abdicate its governance function and is obliged to harness financial market exuberance to enhance national life. ... Product Description

Considered the United States’ greatest contribution to the “canon” of western political theory, The Federalist is a series of 85 essays first published between the early fall of 1787 and the spring of 1788 supporting the ratification of the Constitution. In a new edition of this work, Jack Rakove presents the most critical and frequently assigned Federalist essays with an introduction to current scholarly thinking about the Constitution and the role these essays played in its adoption. Headnotes for each essay help identify the specific arguments being made in response to Anti-Federalist concerns, making the collection’s import more readily apparent to students. Related writings by Hamilton and Madison help set the Federalist in historical context.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Solid Historical Writing
In "Alexander Hamilton: A Concise Biography", Broadus Mitchell has produced a well written, scholarly, and thorough, but not excessively or boringly detailed history of one of our lesser studied and therefore, lesser known forefathers. (For more minute details, one would need to consult other writings, both of Mitchell and others.) Mitchell writes in interesting and reasonably understandable terms, providing a credible, if entirely sympathetic, interpretation of Hamilton's personality, motives, talents and effectiveness. Yet, while sympathetic to Hamilton, he is not blind as to this important founder's faults and failures as seen in chapters 20-21.In the process, he demonstrates confidence in his own understanding of his subject, not hesitating to offer counter opinions to other historians thoughts.

Among the areas covered are Hamilton's youth and political beginnings; the international situation through which he led the United States in its beginning days; the effects of U.S.-European relations on national events and problems; and the relational mine field through which Hamilton and Jefferson would navigate. Also covered is his occasional contact with his murderer, Aaron Burr, which eventually led to the 1804 duel that cost Hamilton his life and robbed this nation of his continued leadership.

One thing that comes through very clearly, and is even stated in so many words, is that this nation would not be the same if either Alexander Hamilton or Thomas Jefferson had been absent from the scene, or if either of them had been less successful in promoting their agendas. Together, friendly and cooperative at first, and bitter enemies at the last, Hamilton and Jefferson set the United States on a balanced path that is still in balance 220 years later. Americans may, and do differ on which was right, but I personally would not want to be without the influence of either, in 1790 or in 2010.Broadus Mitchell has enhanced this reader's appreciation and understanding of the healthy tension existing in our nation, and has strengthened his determination to avoid the kind of personality attacks that caused early political leaders to fight duels and destroy friendships instead of finding common ground and working together. Sadly, that is a lesson our leaders still need to learn.

One less impressive aspect to Mitchell's writing is his occasional use of what strikes me as odd or confusing sentence construction that forced me to read and re-read sentences to comprehend his meaning. On the other hand, he also fed right into my personal enjoyment of expanding my vocabulary by sending me to the (internet) dictionary to learn what words like marplot (p. 51), fatuous (p. 262), peculation (p. 265), and nonce (p. 290) mean.

Having just previously read another book about Hamilton, "Illustrious Americans: Alexander Hamilton" edited by John F. Roche which prodded my interest in further reading on this leader, I was not disappointed. I found Mitchell's work thoroughly satisfying and edifying, and give it 5 happy stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good on facts, annoying on appraisal.
I'll be concise too.If you want to know about Hamilton, this book will inform you.I think it's just "okay" because it's hopelessly biased.Hamilton is a legend of the early Republic, obviously, but Mitchell's effluent praise at every page gets a little tired. My reading was that there is a constant undertone of protecting and "correcting" Hamilton's legacy from criticism that while he was a giant among the forefathers of America, he was statist, a bit of an arrogant self-promoter, and given at least to the appearance of having special affinity for the moneyed elite.Mitchell's rehabilitation of these wicked theories, that may paint Hamilton in a fairer light I might add, are denied limply at every turn, and frankly, contradict themselves and are based on subjective statements. It got old. There was a lot along the lines of, "Some say that Hamilton's work in the Treasury opened up the country to the domination of monopoly capitalism. This isn't true, because he clearly thought the country and public would benefit most from a policy favoring and using the resources of those who might do the most for the economy."I'm not sure that simply saying that makes the criticism ring hollow. My point is, over and over Mitchell states a criticism, which usually sounds pretty logical to me, and then "disproves" it by just baldly denying it and moving on.I'm not saying Hamilton was an evil man or anything silly like that. The book just could have done better to describe an historical giant of a man with all his flaws rather than deny that any could be there at all.The continual implicit critiques of Jefferson, Hamilton's philosophical opponent, got a little tiring too.Another example of contradiction:"Jefferson owned slaves, Hamilton did no such thing."See?Hamilton is clearly better in that sense. But then the book has to also note immediately that Hamilton did once buy a slave for his mother-in-law, and at any rate he wasn't running any agrarian operations that people like Jefferson used slaves in.Whoops.Or that his marriage into the Schuyler family wasn't based on trying to get a leg up in social status, clearly a marriage of love, which rang a little hollow and hyperbolic.Again, I'm not saying he was a cold-hearted philanderer, just that it seems more that Mitchell just doesn't like the sound of that idea more than he disproves any logical observation that that might be true.Or, the statement that no one did more than Hamilton in the Constitutional Convention, though Mitchell is also forced to mention that Hamilton was gone for five straight weeks during it.Hamilton wrote the Federalist Papers, and is one of the most famous founding fathers. But while Mitchell's story of Hamilton is excellent, his appraisal of the man is a little cartoonish.Hamilton in his impact on the country is a B, B+.Mitchell says it's ridiculous to think he's anything other than an A+.I have to disagree; he's not God. ... Product Description
The republics of Greece and Rome proved incapable ofwaging war effectively and remaining free at the same time. The recordof modern republics is not much more encouraging. How, then, did theUnited States manage to emerge victorious from the world wars of thiscentury, including the Cold War, and still retain its fundamentalliberties?

For Karl-Friedrich Walling, this unprecedented accomplishment wasthe work of many hands and many generations, but of Alexander Hamiltonespecially. No Founder thought more about the theory and practice ofmodern war and free government. None supplied advice of more enduringrelevance to statesmen faced with the responsibility of providing forthe common defense while securing the blessings of liberty to theirposterity.

Hamilton's strategic sobriety led many of his contemporaries toview him as an American Caesar, but this revisionist account calls theconventional "militarist" interpretation of Hamilton intoquestion. Hamilton sought to unite the strength necessary for war withthe restraint required by the rule of law, popular consent, andindividual rights. In the process, he helped found something new, theworld's most durable republican empire.

Walling constructs a conversation about war and freedom betweenHamilton and the Loyalists, the Anti-Federalists, the Jeffersonians, and other Federalists. Instead of pitting Hamilton's virtues againsthis opponents' vices (or vice versa), Walling pits Hamilton's virtueof responsibility against the revolutionary virtue of vigilance, aquarrel he believes is inherent to American party government. Byreexamining that quarrel in light of the necessities of war and therequirements of liberty, Walling has written the most balanced andmoving account of Hamilton so far.
