McNair played college football at Alcorn State in Lorman, Mississippi, where he won the 1994 Walter Payton Award as the top player in NCAA Division I-AA. McNair led the Titans to the playoffs four times, and the Ravens once, and played in Super Bowl XXXIV with the Titans. He is the Titans' all-time leading passer. McNair was selected to the Pro Bowl three times, was All-Pro and Co-MVP in 2003, all as a Titan. McNair was the victim of homicide on July 4, 2009, from gunshot wounds inflicted by Sahel Kazemi, his mistress, who then turned the gun on herself. Excerpt: Fort Pillow State Park -In 1861, the Confederate States Army built extensive fortifications here and named the site for General Gideon J. Pillow of Maury County. Engraving of Confederate troops massacring Black Union soldiers after the Battle of Fort Pillow.Because of its strategic location, controlling traffic on the Mississippi River, the fort was attacked and captured by the Union Army, which controlled it during most of the war. An exception to this control occurred for less than one day immediately after the Battle of Fort Pillow in 1864. June 4, 1862 American Civil War: Confederate troops evacuate Fort Pillow on the Mississippi River, leaving the way clear for Union troops to take Memphis, Tennessee. The Confederate victory at the Battle of Fort Pillow (April 1864) ended in the killing of 229 black and white Union soldiers out of 262 engaged in the battle. This slaughter by the Southern troops under Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest has been labeled a massacre; historians still debate how much "slaughter" actually took place, and some believe the reports were exaggerated. While the Union casualty count for the battle does not indicate that the Confederate forces took many prisoners, Confederate records show about 200 prisoners were shipped south. In any case, "Remember Fort Pillow!" became a battle cry among Black soldiers for the remainder of the Civil War. In 1866, the Union Army created a cemetery for both Confederate and Union soldiers south of the battle site. In 1867, they moved about 250 bodies of Confederate and Union soldiers from that cemetery to the Memphis National Cemetery. In 1973, the site was added to the National R...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=881499 ... Read more

Beaufort spent her entire career in the Pacific Ocean, based out of Pearl Harbor, and provided salvage and rescue services where needed from the Western Pacific to the North Pacific. The fifth ship to be so named by the Navy, Beaufort (ATS-2) was laid down on 19 February 1968 at Lowestoft, England, by Brooke Marine Ltd.; launched on 20 December 1968; sponsored by Mrs. Waldemar F. A. Wendt; delivered to the Navy at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard on 5 January 1972; and commissioned there on 22 January 1972, Lt. Comdr. Arthur R. Erwin in command. Beaufort completed outfitting at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard on 5 April 1972 and moved first to the Naval Operating Base, Norfolk, Virginia, for deperming and thence to Little Creek, Virginia, to load in preparation for the voyage to Pearl Harbor. She made an overnight stop at one of her namesake cities, Beaufort, South Carolina, on 14 and 15 April and a two-day visit to Port Royal, South Carolina, from 15 to 17 April before resuming her voyage to Hawaii. The salvage tug transited the Panama Canal on 24 April and headed up the U.S. West Coast of North America to San Diego, California, arriving there on 3 May. Five days later, Beaufort put to sea on the last leg of her voyage. She arrived in Pearl Harbor on 15 May and became a unit of Service Squadron (ServRon) 5. The ship remained in port until 5 June at which time she began shakedown training in the Hawaiian Islands operating area. Excerpt: Alex Haley (August 11, 1921 February 10, 1992) was an African-American writer. He is best known as the author of Roots: The Saga of an American Family and as Malcolm X's collaborator on The Autobiography of Malcolm X. Haley was born in Ithaca, New York August 11, 1921. As the oldest of three brothers and a sister. Haley lived with his family in Henning, Tennessee before he returned to Ithaca with his family when he was five years old. Haley's father was a professor of agriculture at Cornell University and a decorated World War I veteran. The younger Haley always spoke proudly of his father and the incredible obstacles of racism he had overcome. Alex Haley was enrolled at Alcorn State University at age 15. Two years later he returned to his parents to inform them of his withdrawal from college. Simon Haley felt that Alex needed discipline and growth and convinced his son to enlist in the military when he turned 18. On May 24, 1939, Alex Haley began his twenty-year enlistment with the Coast Guard. He enlisted as a mess attendant and then became a Petty Officer Third Class in the rate of Steward, one of the few rates open to African Americans at that time. His Coast Guard service number was 212-548. It was during his service in the Pacific theater of operations that Haley taught himself the craft of writing stories. It is said that during his enlistment he was often paid by other sailors to write love letters to their girlfriends. He talked of how the greatest enemy he and his crew faced during their long sea voyages wasn't the Japanese but boredom. 5-0 out of 5 stars More relevant than prior to Obama's victory.
Author of "Roots", Alex Haley, does indeed write "A Different Kind of Christmas" book. It deals with a teenage only-son from a N. Carolina plantation (Fletcher Randall) who attends college in New Jersey. There becomes aware of his belief that slavery is wrong, through friendship with Quaker schoolmates.

He offers his assistance to the underground railroad people and is given the assignment to assist getting a group of slaves away from his own home county, indeed, some from his own father's plantation. He will meet a slave co-organizer of the escape. The escape is intended to happen during local events on Christmas Eve, 1855. Plans go awry. Will the slaves escape? Will Fletcher and his assistant, Harpin' John, survive?

It is a different Christmas story and one that will never become outdated. It is a fine bit of historical fiction. Is it fiction? It is written so well, a spell-binder, that one wonders how much is truth. This book is even more significant now, due to the Obama election.

A book for schools across the nation, as well as homeschoolers. ... Read more
