I read this book in preparation for my trip to Southern Tuscany next week.Its beautifully written, with, of course, an emphasis on those things you would expect D.H. Lawrence to focus upon. Medicine-The way it used to be.
I read this book when it first came out. I heard it read on Public Radio and I knew that I had to have it. Just ran across it last week in my bookcase and am enjoying it all over again. I have practiced medicine for thirty-seven years, and this book is a great description of how medicine used to be. Dr Kean is candid and honest in his descriptions of different diseases and the treatments. His description of his encounter with the surgeon at Gorgas Hospital in the Canal Zone is classic and reflects the typical relationship between house staff(interns and residents) and attendings in the 1940s and 1950s and probably later. This is a wonderful book, and anyone will find it most informative and entertaining.

Great humor...
Kean is an excellent writer for a doctor... the book flowed very well and never got boring or tedious, despite the fact he was presenting a lot of medical evidence... Great read for anyone interested in infectious diseases or how medicine and politics can get tangled.

Medical Detective
The author is a parasitologist, who had a fascinating career. I love medical detective books of all kinds, fiction and non-fiction - this is the best I have read.

Only for Lawrence die-hards
This was Lawrence's first published novel in the UK, and represents the writer's early experiment in the quest for an established style.

Far too much descriptive detail, and too little narrative, to be considered anenjoyable read. It is however interesting to note the early appearance ofthemes that were to dominate later Lawrence works. In particular, thenature-civilisation dichotomy, which became a Lawrence trademark, isapparent here in the relationship between the cultured, educated narratorand his best friend, the raw-boned but affable farmer, George.

Engrossing read - disturbingly hard to put down
An entertaining and tense thriller that brings up uncomfortable questions about child custody and the wars former lovers wage against each other in a divorce. Reminiscent of Patterson's Alex Cross, Kirkpatrick's Dr. Calder Miro is a forensic psychologist who has dealt with the darkness that high conflict divorce cases generate. In Alienation of Affection, one of Miro's old cases returns to haunt him and to murder a few not-so-innocent bystanders on its way into town.

Riveting Pageturner
Kirkpatrick pulls you in from the very beginning and does not release you until you have turned the last page! Alienation of Affection is more than an engrossing murder mystery. Against the backdrop of a criminal investigation, it takes you inside the workings of a forensic psychologist and shows you how evaluations are conducted --- how clinical information is thought about. It is an accurate portrayal of a high conflict divorce and the real life consequences. Lives are destroyed and minds are twisted. The tension in the story is nicely counterbalancedby the wonderful relationship between Calder and Worth --- the two main investigators. The banter between these engaging, well-drawn characters provide a great vehicle for Kirkpatrick's wicked, well-developed wit and humor. By the end of the book Calder and Worth will have endeared themselves to you and you will not want to let them go. I can't wait to spend more time with them in what I hope are many more sequels to come.

picked up late in evening, and planned to just browse a bit before bed. Stayed up late to finish it. Great read. Interesting perspective on psychologists involved in child custody wars. Therefore, a great read with some public policy benefits!

A Great ReadAlienation of Affection
De Kirkpatrick adds a refreshing and diabolical twist to the classic murder mystery.As a newbie to forensic psychology, I must confess to being riveted to the book until the very end.Living in Chapel Hill for several years made the plot line ever more intense.Bring on the sequel.

Exciting and attention grabbing story
Within this intriguing and unique novel, H.D. Kirkpatrick has taken on the current societal issue of parent alienation and injurious advocacy by a mental health professional. The author has crafted an exciting and attention grabbing story that in many aspects resembles the family dynamics in high conflict divorce cases when one parent attempts to, or is successful in, excluding the other parent from their children's lives. As Kirkpatrick so deftly identifies in his novel, the alienated and discarded parent may be the psychologically healthier parent for the children. Unlike Kirkpatrick's twisted and unforeseen ending, in real life cases alienated children's psychological damage may not be as clear cut as illuminated by this talented and insightful author. Once you are engaged in the first chapter, you may find yourself unable to close the covers of this book until you finish the final page.

I bought this book for a friend.Thus I cannot review it.I never read the book.

elegy to a young womans hero
D.H. Lawrence was obviously an enormous influence on Nin.One can almost visualize the young Nin being titilated by Women in Love or Lady Chatterlys Lover.Lawrence, no doubt, inspired Ms Nin to take up the pen in the firstplace.This unprofessional study is her tribute to this great writer.Itis highly subjective (as is most criticism written by writers on otherwriters.)Nin touches on all aspects of Lawrence writing.She also lendsa much needed feminine voice to the analysis of Lawrence.She seems tointuitively respond to the characters of Lawrence. This study really hitsthe spot.It is essential reading for any student of Lawrence.It alsolends great insight into the artistic development of Anais Nin herself. (In some ways this book is as much about Nin as it is about Lawrence.) The Rainbow is a 1915 novel by British author D. H. Lawrence. It follows three generations of the Brangwen family, particularly focusing on the sexual dynamics of, and relations between, the characters.

Lawrence's frank treatment of sexual desire and the power plays within relationships as a natural and even spiritual force of life, though perhaps tame by modern standards, caused The Rainbow to be prosecuted in an obscenity trial in late 1915, as a result of which all copies were seized and burnt. After this ban it was unavailable in Britain for 11 years, although editions were available in the USA.

The Rainbow was followed by a sequel in 1920, Women in Love. Although Lawrence conceived of the two novels as one, considering the titles The Sisters and The Wedding Ring for the work, they were published as two separate novels at the urging of his publisher. However, after the negative public reception of The Rainbow, Lawrence's publisher opted out of publishing the sequel. Final Sherlockian novel by Barrie Roberts
This is the ninth and final Sherlockian novel by Barrie Roberts.That is, of course, unless my friend Andrew Gulli has another tucked away somewhere.Nine novels and eight short stories is a regretably small output from so talented a writer as Mr. Roberts.In my opinion, he had a knack for capturing Dr. Watson in his tales in very much the same way as he appears in the Canon.Others will surely disagree, but most will concede Roberts had the gift of storytelling and an ear for Sherlockian dialogue.

`Angels' is an odd tale, as are most of Barrie's novels.Holmes notes a set of coded messages in the newspapers, solves the code and learns of a scheduled meeting between the two carrying on the conversation.He and Watson decide to observe this meeting and, instead, find a dead body.Shortly, another corpse is found and it appears that both the correspondants have been killed by yet another party.As things progress, Holmes acquires a client, the venue moves to far rural Scotland and the politics of the situation become very complicated.

The `Angels' of the title are found to be gold coins, minted by Bonnie Prince Charlie and the passle of rogues chasing them includes Americans, Scotsmen and Irish, all muddled up together.A murder method unique to the Inuit is put to use and stones placed by the aboriginal inhabitants of Western Europe provide a solution to a mystery.Holmes and Watson alternately chase and are chased, the list of suspects grows and shrinks with surprising regularity and the police provide good comic relief.

The resolution of the mystery is typical of Roberts.Holmes clears all the mystery away and everything is explained, in some detail.This is, to my mind, the weak point in Roberts' writing, no loose ends are left to dangle and everthing is explained.I have never found this to be true in real life and I suspect it in a mystery.It is permissable, perhaps, in shorter stories, but novel-length tales should have some room for the unexpected and the unexplained.Such things occur daily, to all of us.

Excellent Pastiche
I just finished this book and enjoyed it thoroughly.I agree with the previous reviewers that it is entertaining, and was especially happy to find that the characterizations of Holmes and Watson did not jar with my conception of the original Doyle characters, although Holmes did seem a bit mellower and not as razor-sharp as the original.As mentioned by a review for another Roberts pastiche, this may be attributable to his age. The settings are also well done; I have traveled in the highlands of Scotland, and find the author's description faithful to my impressions of the landscape.My only criticism is that of a failing on the part of the proofreader.There are elementary (forgive me), grammatical errors that I found distracting.One is a consistent misuse of the objective pronoun, by a variety of characters who should be too well-educated to make that mistake.A made-up example: she served the cake to Holmes and I (instead of "me"); another is the use of plural pronouns where they should be singular.These errors are not a deliberate part of vernacular speech on the part of a character, I'm afraid.Other than these minor concerns, it was definitely "a good read" and I would recommend it to readers who enjoy a good Holmes pastiche.

Lively Holmes pastiche
The book opens in London in 1902 ,when Holmes becomes aware of a series of coded messages appearing in a local newspaper .They are from "Benjamin
Franklin" to "Charles Stuart" and the great detective is not peruaded they are as innocent seeming as they appear,suspecting they may be linked to the cause of the Jacobites -those dissidents working for the restoration of the Stuart dynasty to the throne of Britain.He also suspects an American connection .He goes ,with the faithful Watson in tow ,to Regent's park where the correspondents are due to meet ,and discovers the murdered body of one of them-the Benjamin Franklin of the pair .Soon another body turns up in a London hotel room -that of a lawyer McNair,the Charles Stuart of the messages.

Holmes is advised by the US secret service representative in London of the "American angels"-gold coins ,minted in France and destined to fund the American cause in the War of Independence but which never reached America .It is believed that they may have been located in Scotland and been targetted by American anarchists behind the recent assassination of President McKinley ,in order to fund further atrocities.Holmes sets out for Scotland to ferret out the truth ,and the whereabouts of the gold and to forestall the conspirators in the process.

What follows is a busy and lively plot ,with some fine descriptive writing of the Scottish countryside by way of a bonus.There is murder ,grave robbing and attempted poisoning before the resoltion of the case.It is fast moving ,nicely melodramatic and has some nice creepy scenes in a haunted island graveyard.The whole thing is well written ,nicely researched addition to the Holmesian pastiche genre and is recommended with confidence to those who read such titles

Delicious and Authentic Holmes pastiche
Roberts in my view is the best writer doing Sherlock Holmes pastiche novels in recent years.His mysteries are clever, his tone and language spot on.The Holmes and Watson of Barrie Roberts truly sound and act like the originals.The title is deceptive; the mystery unfolds in the Highlands of Scotland."American Angels" refers to a treasure of gold pieces sent by the French and aimed to the Colonies (American, pre-revolution)but waylaid somewhere in Scotland, where various murders and intrigues attend attempts at recovery.With crisp description, Roberts brings the reader right into the locale, with clues worthy of the great detective, and enough action to keep the modern reader engageed- providing an armchair adventure that will delight Holmes purists, and newcomers to this classic genre equally.Buy this to enjoy on a train trip through Scotland, or on your favorite sofa at home during a rainy weekend.

A fine story set in Scotland, with some American History thrown in, as well as ancient European.This Holmes could've been a little more observant and brilliant to match the original, but all in all, you will greatly enjoy this book.Recommended to enjoy by a warm fire and with hot tea and biscuits. ... Terrible unscientific fascist tracts
Bertrand Russell called D.H. Lawrence a pure fascist. Why he did that, we can read in these abstruse, completely unscientific texts, which unveil the darker side of the author.

Unscientific
His `scientific' propositions can be childishly innocent, like `the great field of dynamic consciousness established between the four poles of the dynamic psyche, the solar plexus, the lumbar ganglion, the cardiac plexus and the thoracic ganglion', or `coition is the bringing together of the surcharged electric blood of the male with the polarized electric blood of the female'.

A very damaging fascist evangel
But, his romantic anti-rationalism and anti-science stance leads him to very damaging recommendations: `Ideas are the most dangerous germs mankind has ever been injected with. They are introduced in schools and by means of newspapers. Therefore, the great mass of humanity should never learn to read and write - never.'
For him, `understanding is the devil. We don't want to educate children so that they may understand. Understanding is a fallacy and a vice in most people.'
`I would rather listen to an (Afro-American) witch-doctor than to science.'

His perfect society
Society should be `built on a relationship of men towards men in a spirit of unfathomable trust and responsibilities, service and leadership, obedience and pure authority. Men have got to choose their leaders, and obey them to the death. And it must be a system of culminating aristocracy, a society tapering like a pyramid to the supreme leader.'
`It is the business of very few to understand and for the mass it is their business to believe and not to bother. When the leaders assume responsibilities, the populace (!) can again become free and happy and spontaneous.'

It is a wonder that someone who uttered such incredibly naïve, sharply elitist and pure fascist propaganda could write such literary masterpieces as `Sons and Lovers' or `The Rainbow.'

I recommend this book to all D.H. Lawrence fans.
However, this book is in no way a good introduction to his literary work.
