Product Description
It's been five years since the Mason family's holiday at the lakeside cottage in north Eastern Vermont, close to where prize-winning novelist Samuel Mason grew up. The summers that Sam, his wife, Mena, and their twins Franny and Finn spent at Lake Gormlaith were noisy, chaotic, and nearly perfect. But since Franny's death, the Masons have been flailing, one step away from falling apart. Lake Gormlaith is Sam's last, best hope of rescuing his son from a destructive path and salvaging what's left of his family. As Sam struggles with grief, writer's block, and a looming deadline, Mena tries to repair the marital bond she once thought was unbreakable. But even in this secluded place, the unexpected - in the form of an over-zealous fan, a surprising friendship, and a second chance - can change everything. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book club selection
10 out of 11 of us gave it a thumbs up.It was a fast and easy read which lent itself for good discussion.
Franny could have been developed more in terms of what was going through her head while starving herself to death.
It was a real accounting of what can happen to families after the loss of a loved one. Some interesting although predictable parts at the end.
I say give it a shot.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hungry for more answers
I like Greenwood's style and have read other books of hers, but although this one kept me reading, I was a bit disappointed in the outcome as well as other aspects, including the lack of even a hint of information that would have explained Franny's reason for wasting away. It seems as though the family had the perfect life in San Diego, so what made Franny so unhappy that she wanted to shrink from it? I didn't sense a lot of outside--or inner--turmoil in her life. And for Greenwood to make the character a dancer was a bit trite, an easy way out. The ending too was a bit too perfectly tied up.

But the chapters are short and the book flows exceptionally well, and it is a good read.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Hungry Season
I enjoy T. Greenwood's writing, however, this novel of hers was not my favorite.I enjoyed the writing style, the characters, and the setting, but the plot could have been a bit more developed and intensified.
SPOILER:

I also did not care for how all the characters found solace at the end, as this is not a realistic outcome.

4-0 out of 5 stars My first T. Greenwood book
My first book by this author, and I will definitely read another.I liked this book a lot, but there was too much predictability in the last part of the book. Some of what happened (don't want to write spoilers) near the end was just wrapped up too neatly.Life just wouldn't happen like that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
I read The Hungry Season as one of our Book Club selections. It is beautifully written and unforgettable.I cried at the end - just amazing. ... Read more

Product Description
In "Two Rivers", Vermont, Harper Montgomery is living a life overshadowed by grief and guilt. Since the death of his wife twelve years earlier, Harper has narrowed his world to working at the local railroad and raising his daughter, Shelly. Still wracked with sorrow over his loss and plagued by his role in a brutal, long-ago crime, he wants only to make amends for his past mistakes. Then one day, a train derails in Two Rivers and Harper finds a chance at atonement. One of the survivors, a pregnant fifteen-year-old girl, needs a place to stay, and Harper offers to take her in. 3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
The writing style for this book is very... formal... for lack of a better word. The jumps in time were jarring in a lot of cases and I found them distracting.I think Betsy was supposed to be a character you fell in love with as well but I found her grating. She came across as very selfish and whiny to me.After a while I just wanted to get to the point of the "mystery" and hear a lot less about the past.I feel a lot was lost by spending more than half the book in the past.in the end I just wasn't satisfied.Over all it's not a BAD read, but it's not a great read either.

1-0 out of 5 stars hard to read
This could have been a great story, but between the grammatical errors and the unbelievability of the main character, I found myself getting really annoyed. The plot is interesting, and parts of the book flowed really well - but I got hung up on the main character's sappiness and a few grammatical errors that the editor should have caught before publishing this book.

The subjects are intense (Vietnam War, racism, civil rights) and could have made a good read, but somehow I kept feeling like I was about to be lured into a cheesy romance novel. I wanted more depth and less idealism.

4-0 out of 5 stars Couldnt put it down
It was depressing but comforting in its lessons and bitter-sweetness. I would definitely read more from T. Greenwood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Rivers
This books looks into its past and its present, alternating between chapters.I liked this style as it let us gradually discover more about the plot and characters through these "flashbacks."At the heart of the book is a real, raw, and beautiful, yet gripping love story. The other story lines tie in hauntingly with the love story, emerging the reader in a book that you just can't put down. Its one fault is that the ending seems a bit unrealistic, as if the author tied it up with a big, pretty bow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Really liked this book. Easy read. The characters were well developed. I want to know the rest of the story......... ... Read more

Product Description
Dark and compassionate, graceful yet raw, "Undressing the Moon" explores the seams between childhood and adulthood, between love and loss...At thirty, Piper Kincaid feels too young to be dying. Cancer has eaten away her strength; she'd be alone but for a childhood friend who's come home by chance. Yet with all the questions of her future before her, she's adrift in the past, remembering the fateful summer she turned fourteen and her life changed forever. Her nervous father's job search seemed stalled for good, as he hung around the house watching her mother's every move. What he and Piper had both dreaded at last came to pass: Her restless, artistic mother, who smelled of lilacs and showed Piper beauty, finally left. With no one to rely on, Piper struggled to hold on to what was important. She had a brother who loved her and a teacher enthralled with her potential. But her mother's absence, her father's distance, and a volatile secret threatened her delicate balance. Now Piper is once again left with the jagged pieces of a shattered life. If she is ever going to put herself back together, she'll have to begin with the summer that broke them all... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars By far my favorite book.
I've read a lot of books and I mean a lot.Undressing the moon by T.greenwood honestly has to be my favorite I have read it over 10 times and I still cry at the sad points and laugh at the funny parts,i've tried to read other books after it and measure it up but I can't it has no comparison to any other books I have read. Piper has stayed in my heart and along with becca and quinn and of course Mr.Hammond.This book will stick with you for life and make you feel for every person you meet in it.You'll cry a lot you'll laugh some but most of all you will develop a sense of empathy for humankind. If I could reccomend any book for anyone it would be Undressing the moon.

3-0 out of 5 stars Undressing the Moon
This book was pretty good, although parts tended to drag. The only problem I had was Greenwood's elusiveness to "him" during the book.I kept asking "Who is he?"All in all, a good read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Poetic, but lacking...
Ms. Greenwood's writing is lovely, lyrical, and poetic. As a cancer survivor, I could relate to her spot-on descriptions of how an illness like this makes you feel. However, I was frustrated by her unrealistic details.

I found it quite unbelievable that when Piper finally opens the letters she's been receiving from her mother for several years (but refusing to open), she finds they are envelopes containing nothing but shards of glass.Yes, yes, I know this is a mystical thing and her mother was a sensitive, artistic soul who created windows from found pieces of glass. But, how could Piper, her friend Becca, and the U.S. Postal Service not have noticed there were not letters in those envelopes? It seems silly.Glass shards would have poked throuth the paper, would have smashed into a powder when going through the postal system equipment, would have been noticeably un-letterlike.Sorry to belabor this point, but it represents the most blatant of the silly details that were wrong in this book and made me cringe a few times.I think the novel could have been outstanding, but for the author trying too hard with this kind of "artistic" junk. And I studied art myself and consider myself an artist (in addition to my librarian day job).Sorry, but this just misses.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant Read
From the time I picked it up, this book gripped me.I work from home and played hooky from my editing job to read--and then finish--this book.It is one of those stories, much like Laura Moriarty's The Center of Everything, with extremely vivid characters. Not only are the characters intriguing, but the plot is alluring and the writing is as fluid and brilliant as any I've read.Greenwood's words are lyrical.A professor of mine once said that a really good book isn't one you can't put down, but one you put down often, carefully digesting every word. Undressing the Moon is one of those.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I positively loved this book. The characters are so vivid and real, it's hard not to feel like you're one of them, or that you're actually there, witnessing the whole story. I've read the book 3 times and it still affects me the same way it did the first time I read it. ... Read more

People who criticize this book are people that have not yet learned dynamics. Though this book is not easy, neither is the subject matter. This book gives it straight. 4-0 out of 5 stars Nearer Than the Sky
Wanted to give this book 3.5 stars, but that is not an option, so I rounded up.
I enjoy T. Greenwood's style of writing - I typically thoroughly enjoy her books. However, I found myself becoming frustrated with "Nearer Than the Sky."I wanted to learn more of the mother's relationship with her children, and what exactly she was doing to them and why. However, the book focused more on the main character's present-day life. What was revealed of the mother and the children, however, did pull at my heart - I felt for the characters.

Also, my copy had several typos, including the misplacement of "the" several times.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ok book. Not highly recommended but somewhat interesting....
I was excited to read this book because I knew it dealt with Munchausen by Proxy Syndrome (MBPS) and thought it would be fascinating. It was indeed somewhat interesting and certainly well-written, but I was hoping for more insight into the ways in which the mother and subsequently her daughter handled this disease and the ways in which it impacted on their own lives. I guess my only disappointment was that I was looking for more information and insight into the condition/disease itself and the ways in which the characters harmed their children and how they each of them dealt with it on an emotional level, than just how it impacted the family on a larger scale.

While I don't highly recommend this book, I thought it was certainly interesting and a good overall book. It could make an interesting book club selection too.

5-0 out of 5 stars SUCH A GREAT BOOK ~~~~
NEARER THAN THE SKY

Meet Indie Brown, who lives in the backwoods of Maine with her long-time boyfriend, Peter.Peter runs a restaurant and Indie is recently unemployed.Indie has built a happy, loving life and relationship with Peter. All is going well for them, until Indie receives a phone call from Arizona where her mom and sister are living.

Indie's mom is a victim of Munchausen syndrome, which, if you are not familiar with this scary, unexplained disease, is a mental disorder that causes women to make their own children ill, at any cost. This, in their minds, gives THEM attention. The moms are the afflicted, the kids are the victims. In Indie's case, her mom turns her attention to Indie's kid sister, Lily.Indie also has a mentally handicapped brother, Benny.

Indie's childhood is a living hell. However, she is a good little kid and a loving sister to Benny and Lily. The stories told of their childhood are funny and sweet.Indie and Benny are pretty much on their own, as their mom is so busy with Lily, who, as you will quickly figure out, is constantly ill. What I really liked about the format of the book is that it jumps from present to past and back again. This is good reading, a format I truly enjoy. We get sneaks into Indie, Lily, and Benny's miserable childhood at the hands of their mom.

Indie has to return to Arizona as her mom has been 'self-poisoning' herself. So, Indie is thrown back into the past while dealing with her mom and her sister. We also meet her newborn niece, Violet.Indie's radar goes on high alert when she sees her sister Lily with her own daughter.

Indie's memories coming flooding back -- her mom's illness and treatment of all her children, her dad, who owns a bar and is not around much, and how Indie breaks away from this sad/sick situation only to be drawn back into it as an adult.

I loved how the book deals with this sad and tragic illness and lets the reader see how this affects not only the victim/child, but the entire family. All of the characters were genuine and the story is very, very interesting and exciting.I read this book in one day and when I wasn't reading it, I could not stop thinking about it.

Check out this book.It will not only give you a greater understanding of Munchausen syndrome, but is also filled with great characters, a very interesting story line, and love.I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Thank you!
Pam

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read
"Nearer Than the Sky" was well written.
I would recommend this book.
Some of the food and eating scenes were slightly dragged out, but still it's a good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hard to read, but very well done...
Greenwood's prose is subtle and sensitive in this novel...I found myself completely absorbed in the story and its characters, and would highly recommend it to anyone. While this book was heart-wrenching in many places, Indie's story is at the same time quite inspirational and beautifully told. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great contribution to chronic pain and healing
Excellent insights on the nature of pain, sickness, healing, and treatment.
Anyone with interest in exploring symptoms, rather than supressing them; moving toward pain, rather than running from it.
Michael greenwood is a good writer with a lot of clinical experience which he shares in this book.
There are nice sections on five elemental acupuncture, meditations, and using breathwork to enter into an altered state of consciousness to allow for the possibility of transcendence and transformation.
I highly recommend to anyone studying TCM, or who has any interest in looking at chronic pain from a less common viewpoint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Energetic Healing
Greenwood has an excellent grasp of the holistic and energetic nature of the human condition. His insights help to understand why health and healing is more than a physical phenomena.

5-0 out of 5 stars Broad presentation on mind-body-spirit system and healing
This book presents a nice examination of the mind-body-spirit feedback system that is the nature of our life and existence, providing insights and many case studies to show how this model can help facilitate healing processes.Meditation, chakras, chi, 5 elements, archetypes, and other aspects of this system of consciousness-energy informing the perceived reality of form are addressed. While there is a strong Chinese medicine component to this text there is a broader look at insights from intuitive sources and modern research in physics, consciousness, and subtle energy fields. The author is thoughtful and expresses concepts clearly, presenting a paradigm for healing which supports the path toward wholeness and integration which is inherent in the essence of Consciousness/Awareness from which all things and realities arise. This is a very worthy contribution to the mind-body healing field and related areas of exploration. ... Product Description
This is the record of the 10th Pugwash Symposium, an outgrowth of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs. These Conferences and the more specialized Symposia are marked by a free and open exchange, in which world scientists and scholars share their facts and their thoughts. This enables them to give objective expression to their concerns about the effects of science and technology on mankind, positive and negative, potential and actual, and especially about the role of science and scientists in evolving sane arms policies. While unofficial, these meetings have often heralded several years in advance what were to become official national policies and international agreements.

This symposium brought together participants from the United States, the Soviet Union, England, France, West Germany, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Israel and India. The discussions that resulted include both "hard" technical analysis of specific weapons systems and assessments of long-range tendencies of a necessarily general and exploratory nature.

The explosive growth of modern technology and the proliferation of armaments have been accelerating—and parallel—developments. Although there is a lag between new discoveries and their application in hardware, this lag is rather shorter in the case of weapons than for more peaceful products—hence the need to monitor as closely as possible and without delay the military application of new techniques. Thus, a goal of the participants in this symposium was to trace the paths by which known and foreseeable technologies could be transferred both into weapons and into arms control devices.

The first of the book's four sections is concerned with applications of new technology to ballistic-missile guidance and to nuclear weapons, including the possible military significance of the (as yet undiscovered) superheavy elements. Reconnaissance and surveillance as arms controlling elements, the performance of ABM systems, and offensive and defensive ocean technology are also treated in detail.

The second section discusses the safeguarding of nuclear materials and installations and the problems of nuclear weapons proliferation arising from the expansion of nuclear power production.

Military research and development is the subject of the next section, which investigates both the growth characteristics of military systems and problems of controlling their development or their elimination.

The final section is devoted to some political (as distinct from the technical) implications of the subject. ... Read more

BRAVING THE VOID
Journeys into Healing

Book review
By
Dr. Stephen J. Faulkner
Duncan, B.C.

For physicians and health care workers who are interested in Energy Healing and holistic approaches to health care, this book is a landmark work. Dr. Michael Greenwood's second book "Braving the Void - Journeys into Healing" is a well written, easy to read account of his experiences and insights as a physician and acupuncturist at the Victoria Pain Clinic.

Physicians in primary care reading this book will immediately resonate with some of his ideas on chronic pain and chronic illness. For example, the discussion of the doctor-patient relationship and the increasing trend of modern medicine to practice by protocols and algorithms using "evidence based" treatments is very relevant.

"To suggest one form of treatment is good for all people in all situations seems patently absurd, yet physicians have allowed fear to provoke them to abandon their inner strength and relinquish their authority when dealing with patients"

The concept of the void, which was initially developed in his first book, "Paradox and Healing", co-authored with Dr. Peter Nunn, is one that is best experienced to be appreciated and understood. Having experienced the void myself in therapeutic situations it is something I believe all holistic physicians and healers must experience and enter into periodically to be fully aware of what is happening both for themselves and their patients. Michael Greenwood has embraced this belief and, together with his other staff members, has developed a model for energy healing for conditions as diverse as chronic back pain and chronic fatigue, to breast cancer and multiple personality disorder. Other areas I found extremely interesting were the case histories on phantom limb pain, electrical burns and shamanic possessions.

Dealing with these "energies" can be extremely fatiguing and at times frightening, and Dr. Greenwood has been very modest about his experiences. He should be considered the James Cook of the human psyche, beginning to chart new continents and oceans of human energy, which have been previously "Terra Incognito" to western minds. His medical training is the navigational equipment required to prevent him landing on the rocks and his skills as a humane physician and acupuncturist the gift that provides safety through the gale-force winds and ocean storms.

This kind of work, dealing with chronic pain and the failures of so many other "so called" orthodox treatments also brings up the shadow work that a healthy society must engage in for its survival. As Michael suggests, our health care system is all too ready to focus on the "light" and "positive" aspects of our culture but reluctant to approach the "dark" or "negative" aspects. This is not the kind of work for the faint-hearted. A willingness to explore one's own shadow side and belief system is essential if one is going to navigate the unpalatable places of the client's psyche. Fortunately for us, there are pioneers like Michael Greenwood who are giving us frameworks to work with such as the void from which we can springboard into the unconscious material that lies stored in the body/mind continuum.

I would thoroughly recommend this book to all health care professionals involved in holistic and energy healing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr Greenwood Explores Existential Trauma
The book, "Braving the Void" clearly and vividly describes how our memories are not only stored in the brain, but appear to be widely distributed throughout the body (a postulate that is being confirmed by esteemed neuroscientists, such as Antonio Damasio, author of Descarte's Error). This clearly brings up the proverbial question of how memory is stored. We do not have a clear answer to that question, except that it is complex. This has important implications for chronic illness in some people who have experienced both physical and mental trauma. Post-traumatic stress disorders seem to be deeply stored within this body-mind memory system, and may be expressed as intractable symptoms such as chronic pain. According to Green, this memory storage system may be viewed metaphorically as an holographic field or neurophysiological pattern which he terms "energy". "Unblocking" the abnormal "energy" pattern, he claims, can restore health by releasing these memories. During this process, the patient can enter a space termed the "void", a place where change can occur and the abnormal patterns of belief from trauma are exposed and released.

Dr Greenwood uses various techniques such as acupuncture, forced breathing, kinesiology, and massage to release the memory patterns. He provides fascinating case histories of patients who were suffering from chronic pain, and other manifestations of ill health, being transformed back to wellness through manipulation of the body-mind "systemic memory" system.

This is an intriguing book for healthcare professionals who wish to learn more than they were conventionally taught, and for patients with chronic illness and pain secondary to past physical and psychological trauma, especially in view of the scientific evidence published by Antonio Damasio. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Dynamicist from MA
It is one of the best dynamics books that I know of. It is a text book as well as a reference book for Dynamicists. The main advantage of this book over other dynamics books are the following excellent and important chapters: differential approach and integral approach in formulation equations of motion, as well as a chapter on numerical methods for holonomic/non-holonomic constraints. As far as I know, all the main methods for deriving equations of motion are presented.
In general, this book concentrates on formulating equations of motion, for holonomic or non-holonomic systems. It should be named Advance Mechanics, since dynamics is usually associated, these days, with the field of non-linear dynamics. I assume that the author main reference was Tensor Calculus and Analytical Dynamics by Papastavridis, which is more detailed and more mathematical. This book, however, is more readable, presents many illustrative examples, and still consistent, with no short cuts and preserves the mathematical beauty of this subject. I also like the use of few standard examples, as the standard knife-edge constraint, to demonstrate the various methods, and to compare between them. Again, the author not only presents the various methods, but also criticizes each one by complexity, applicability, etc. My only disappointment was the absence of tensor notation, which could save dozens of confusing sigmas.
The method presented include: the usage of quasi-coordinates, Maggis's equations, Boltzmann-Hammel equations, Gibbs-Appell equations, Kane's equations, and also a nice mathematical derivation and insight on the transpositional relations and Frobenius theorem.
I read it carefully, and found only few small typos; practically it is a typo free book.
I bet that this excellent book will became a classic on non-holonomic dynamics.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best so far
I really enjoyed this book and working the problems in it.It has some truly unique features. To me this book is an attempt by the author to remedy some of the deficiencies in his earlier book Classical Dynamics. There is still no discussion of motion in a central force field or of vibrations but everything else is here. The sections on maintaining holonomic constraints during simulation and the sections on numerical methods are among the better I have seen on those subjects. There is also a rather through treatment of the basic vector mechanics that forms the basis of modern mechanics.Greenwood is not shy about attempting to level the playing field before starting out on the more modern subjects and provides the student with a ready compendium of examples, techniques, and results. ...
