1-0 out of 5 stars Jonh Taylor, where are you?
Guard Against Dishonor is the worst of the Hawk & Fisher books- and that's saying something.

First, the problems with the series as a whole: it's hard to single out one single bad aspect amid so many bad aspects, but what really kills the Hawk & Fisher series is their moral schizophrenia. Apparently Green was trying to aim for "tough but sensitive", and he figured that tough AND sensitive would add up to pretty much the same thing. So H & F spend half their time tsk-tsking about the widespread corruption, worrying about sick little girls, and in general having moments that should not be read by diabetics, and the other half threatning their people, going rogue, and hacking criminals to bits. Yes, it's as bad as it sounds.

As for Guards Against Dishonor itself: the "plot", such as it is, revolves around a new and dangerous drug that turns people into super-strong madmen. Hawk and Fisher try to track down the drug, kill a bunch of people while moralizing about evil the suppliers are, get seperated, get falsely accused of being traitors, kill some more people, meet up with each other in a highly melodramatic scene where they both decide that they'll stick with each other no matter what, kill some more people, stop the bad guys, and get their names cleared up.

The story has enough holes to make Swiss cheese jealous, the Big Bad Inner City is about as scary as a grocery store (is this really the same guy who created Nightside?), thecharacters are made of cardboard, and Hawk and Fisher display the above-lamented multiple personality disorder- you thought the bit about the poor sick little girl was just exageration, didn't you? Nope.

But my favorite ham-handed plot point is probably the fire escape. Yes, Haven- that anarchic, Godforsaken, pseudo-Medieval slum- has fire escapes, even in its worst neighborhoods. This is no momentary lapse- there's an entire fight scene that takes place on one.

In short, Guards Against Dishoner is waste of dead trees, and I cannot believe that this unmitigated drek comes from the same man who gave us John Taylor and Eddie Drood. Please, please, do not buy this utter piece of garbage.

4-0 out of 5 stars They May Have Faced Worse, But Not By Much
Hawk and Fisher return and face one of their hardest cases ever. The two guard captains have not been in Haven long, but they have made a reputation for being tough and honest. They have faced many terrible things (the worst being in their first adventure, BLUE MOON RISING), but now they face possible dishonor.

A terrible new drug is about to hit the street and Hawk and Fisher are there when a sample is taken. The results are so horrible that Hawk leads a raid on the drug runner to stop him before the new drug gets to the population and destroys the city. But all of the evidence disappears and the perp is released.Hawk and Fisher are now targets from above.

But instead of being taken off duty, they are split up.Hawk has to find out what happened to the evidence while Fisher is volunteered for a suicide mission guarding some peace talks.

But things go wrong and soon both Hawk and Fisher are disgraced and on the run.Somehow they need to clear their own names and find out what happened to their partner. Not an easy task when everyone in the city wants the reward for turning in their corpses.

Another fine mystery/suspense tale. This one ends with an uncharacteristic happy scene. We see a little more of what has make Hawk and Fisher wh they are as well as some more hints to their pre-Haven history (see Blue Moon Rising).

1-0 out of 5 stars Forget It - It's Rubbish
I am writing this review to warn other people off this book.Forget it, avoid at all costs, this book is terrible.
Bascially it is the fifth (how did it get this far?) book in the Hawk & Fisher series set in Haven, a fantasy city.Basically a drug bust goes wrong, Fisher cops the blame and Hawk sets out to clear her name.
The main problem I have with this book is it is a cliched tough cop story set in a fantasy world, and that simply just does not work.Hawk and Fisher seem to be able to intimidate anyone through presence alone, and whenever they are outnumbered 400 to 1, they always utter the same predictable phrase - "I've faced worse".And it does get worse, as every dilemna gets solved by the main characters hacking through hundreds enemies with their weapons. It is just so totally stupid and unimaginative that every conflict is resolved in the same way.
I really struggle to find positives to talk about when considering this book. There are some grisly scenes that the author has written quite well, but these fail to lift this novel out of the mire.
To conclude, this book is a terrible mish mash of cliched rubbish that is a waste of anyones time. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars 'Achoo!' Not!
Did you ever have one of those moments where you felt a big sneeze coming on, and you sit there with teary eyes, head tilted back, body completely still and hand held outwards as to brace yourself for the anticipated, satisfying, climatic 'Achoo!' as the air explodes from out your lungs - and it never comes?

That's how this book ends.

Other than that I am a huge fan of Simon Green's Nightside and Secret History series. This book has it's merits but it's more of a tribute to a great author in progress.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent world
I was hesitant but really wanted things to read. And I was drawn in immediately. I was worried at one point if I would wish for a sequel, but for once he wrapped up a story in one book and it was excellent.

3-0 out of 5 stars Go for the Nightside books instead
A couple of issues harm what could be a very good dark fantasy book.First, the editing is atrocious.I felt like I was reading a first draft.Typos abound, and a page was actually turned the wrong way in the binding.Completely inexcusable.

Second, Mr. Green is known for extraordinarily long chapters. This is the type of book that needs to be picked up for a little light reading, but Green treats it like it was "War and Peace".

Finally, and this is just a pet peeve of mine, why would an author put a quote from themselves on the front of the book, praising it?That is just bush-league right there. All in all this felt like I was reading a book published in an all night Kinko's.Read the Nightside series instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Super Reader
Well, what do you know, I had read this and forgotten about it.

Two men have come back to Shadows Fall, the town where legends go to die or change, one of them dead, one alie, and bearing the power of prophecy.

An army of christian nutcases, backed by sorcery wants to destroy the town as an affront, and all, and this all ties in.

The town opposes them, and Jim.. err.. Sean Morrison seeks the aid of the elves of faerie, along with the help of Lester Gold, the Mystery Avegner.

Religious nuts and sorcerer priets vs cartoons, stuffed animals, elves, Jack Fetch, and more.

Father Time is dying. It is all a plot of the devil, I tell ya. With a two page dodgy ending.

4-0 out of 5 stars As much as I would like to give it 5 stars...
...I'm afraid I can't quite bring myself to do that.

Simon R. Green is one of those authors who writes like few others: his plots are highly original, his characters are unique and memorable, and the dialogue is nothing short of brilliant.

Shadows Fall continues the reality established in Green's Nightside series, with mostly successful results.Like the Nightside, Shadows Fall is one of those Middle America towns that is populated by literal legends and myths, much like the gods Neil Gaiman has written of in his recent novels (beings essentially brought into reality by belief), and ordinary people who seem to have wandered into the town when they were guided by destiny's hand.

At the start of the book, a serial killer is roaming the town and striking out from the shadows. The first significant victim is known as God's Assassin and is supposedly posessed by at least a portion of the archangel Michael.Shortly after this, James Hart's return to his childhood home seems to coincide with a prophecy that nobody seems altogether too certain about.

James is only the first of a slew of main characters (something fans of the Deathstalker series will be immediately familiar with) to step into the spotlight, and each one of them is instantly likeable and, well, inherently cool. The plot starts to follow an epic path within the first 50 pages and introduces its readers to (amongst others) superheroes from cancelled comic books, a lecherous-but-loveable brotherly duo who work as gravediggers but know more than they let on about the town, a dead man who still lives with his parents, and elves who use weaponry straight out of Star Wars against psychotic Christian militiamen. As bizarre as this all sounds, it all works and ties together in ways that only Green could pull off.

The entire novel is electrifying, especially once the true evil haunting the town reveals itself, and Green's fans will most likely devour the book within a day or two.My only complaint is that all the plot's conflicts are resolved within, literally, the final 2 or 3 pages. As much as I hate to say this, it seems that Green painted himself into a corner in regards to the plot's final battle and didn't know how to get his heroes out of trouble without resorting to the solution he does. While it works, it still feels like a bit of a cop-out and might leave some readers disappointed. As a result, Shadows Fall is an amazing entry into the adventure and fantasy genres with an ending that might some folks a little disappointed, but that's only in comparison to Green's normal literary brilliance. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Stuck on a Planet of Monsters
This is the final book in Green's Twilight Of The Empire trilogy. This is the same empire as in the Owen Deatstalker books.

Following in the footsteps of Ghostworld, this volume follows a Hellsquad; a team of talented, but disfavored, people. We have Captain, an Investigator, an esper, a doctor, and two marines. They have just landed on a new planet.

Hellsquads are dumped on a new planet with barely enough power to land. They must make the most of the new world and give the all-clear for colonists to survive. The sooner they do so, the sooner they will received much-needed supplies.

But this world is a puzzle. All signs say it should be full of life but it appears barren. Then a small deserted city is detected and the squad heads for it.It is then that the nightmare begins.

The events of Ghostworld are in the past and the Empire once again encounters life that could be detrimental to its survival. But in order for the Empire to know, the squad is going to have to survive long enough to get the word out.But can they survive against the nightmare they have uncovered?

A fast-paced book with some new twists on old ideas that make it fresh and fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovecraftian!
After reading Ghostworld, I couldn't possibly see how Green expected to follow it up.Boy, did he shock me!Hellworld is one of the creepiest novels I've read for a while with a truly original race of creatures thatprovide a genuine threat to our heroes.Green really knows how to blendscience-fiction and horror perfectly.I recommend this very much for fansof H.P. 5-0 out of 5 stars Nightside & Owen Deathstalker
The first books I read by Simon R. Green are the Nightside books, I raced through them one after another, and I find his writing superb! As the latest Nightside had not yet come out, I tried the DeathStalker, I read as often as time allowed, I found myself thoroughly engrossed!I have just started the sequel and am well into that as well, however I keep encountering references regarding previous adventures and only learned recently of the preludes "Mistworld, Ghostworld and Hellworld", I'm considering stopping the Death Stalker series until I have read those first.

At any rate I highly recommend his books!

4-0 out of 5 stars Complex Plot --- Lots of Death
This is the first of Green's Twilight Of The Empire novels. This is the same Empire as that in the Owen Deathstalker books.

This story takes place on Mistworld in the city of Mistport.Mistworld is a rebel world and has been fending off the Empire for several hundred years. But now things are starting to get out of control.

Mistworld is a harsh world and the Empire's blockade has reduced most of the society to almost medieval levels. But there is high-tech and psionics. We meet thieves, con men, agents, investigators, council members and businessmen; a huge cast of characters for a 218-page book.

A lot of people die in this book but the death is not graphic. It is not a happy tale but it is well written and you will remember it.It is also quite different from the others in the series in tone and style.

This is a must-read for anyone familiar with Green's Empire novels but it also stands alone very well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad start
While this is not one of Green's better stories about the Empire, it is involving and introduces us to some great characters, such as Investigator Topaz.I just wish Green had spent more time in developing a satisfyingclimax.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simon R. Green is a legend!
He has equisitely woven fantasy from all segments of world fantasia into some really great books, about Empire and Owen Deathstalker :) I certainly recommend his books to anyone. Kish. ... Read more
