Product Description
This CD contains Gogol's Art: a Search for Identity by Laszlo Tikos -- the best book ever written about Russia's most enigmatic and intriguing author, together with the full-text of works by Gogol and other great Russian writers, and works about Russian history. Nikolay V. Gogol (1809-1852), created a new direction in Russian letters, which was further developed in the 19th century by writers like Dostoyevsky and Rozanov, and in the 20th century by Bely, Bulgakov and Sinyavsky.

Intended for use on Windows PCs, Gogol's Art is presented in html (Web) format, to allow links from the text to related footnotes. The other books on this CD are in plain text format -- easy to read, to print, and to search.

Laszlo Tikos is professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA. A native of Hungary, he studied at the University of Debrecen (Hungary) 1950-54, from where he received an MA in Russian Language and Literature. He was forced to leave Hungary after the 1956 uprising, and escaped to West Germany. He studied at the Universities of Tuebingen and Munich, and received his Ph.D. from Tuebingen in 1961. Since 1962 he and his family have been living in the United States.

The works of Gogol on this CD are: Dead Souls, Taras Bulba, The Inspector General, and St. John's Eve Other Russian authors included: Dostoeyevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Pushkin, Turgenev, Andreyev, Gorky, Kuprin, and Lermontov. Plus the full text of two "Country Studies" -- Russia and Belarus (birthplace of Gogol) , which were originally published as printed books by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress between 1987 and 1995 under a program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Army. Each country study is presented as a single document, plain text form -- easy to read, to print, and to search (rather than as a collection of over 100 separate documents for each book, that you could find on the Web). ... Product Description
Although largely composed by Gogol during self-imposed exile in Italy in the late 1830s, this work remains perhaps the most essentially "Russian" of novels. The reader follows Chichikov, a dismissed civil servant turned confidence man, through the countryside in pursuit of his shady enterprise. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good quick silly fun
The Inspector General is a short comedy parodying the rampant low-level corruption in Russian towns at the time the play was written (1836).The officials of a small town, led by Chief of Police Anton Antonovich, arepetrified when they learn that a government inspector is being sent tovisitundercover to make sure everything is running as it should.Due totheir fear, they quickly conclude that Hlestakov, a badly-in-debt guest ata local inn who is in reality just a 14th-rank clerk en route to hisfather's house, is in fact that inspector.Hilarity ensues, as theofficials fall all over themselves to show Hlestakov the town and convincehim that they are doing their jobs in a most upstanding manner, whileHlestakov, though no genius, is wise enough to exploit the situation, convincing the townfolk that he is an extremely important personage, securing over a thousand roubles in "loans," and becoming engagedto Anton Antonovich's daughter and nearly seducing his wife.AfterHlestakov leaves, a letter arrives to the effect that he wasn't really theinspector, causing everyone in town to feel very silly, and the play ends.

Though both today and at the time he was alive some people haveinsisted on setting Gogol up as a biting social critic, at least to me itseems that in reality he was nothing more than a very funny author.Thecharacters in The Inspector General (much like those in his novel DeadSouls) are generally not much more than comic caricatures, so if you'rehoping for a lot of depth in that area you might wish to look elsewhere. But there are a number of very funny moments in the play, and it's quite anenjoyable story which had a good deal of influence on later writers.Atjust 72 pages, it's a quick read, so I would recommend it heartily.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ho hum

A bit of a one-note satire on petty government officals and their abuse of power.A visiting clerk is mistaken for an important official from Petersburg and the local functionaries fall over themselves to impress him.

No characters really stand out as especially interesting or fresh. Not a bad piece, but nothing to get excited about. ... Read more

Product Description
Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol was a Ukrainian-born Russian writer. Although his early works, such as "Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka," were heavily influenced by his Ukrainian upbringing and identity, he is often called the "father of modern Russian realism." The novels Taras Bul'ba and Dead Souls, the play The Inspector-General, and the short stories "Diary of a Madman," "The Nose" and "The Overcoat" (1842) are among his best known works. With their scrupulous and scathing realism, ethical criticism as well as philosophical depth, they remain some of the most important works of world literature. ... Read more
