8vo. [xxxii], 120 pp. Engraved frontispiece plate of the Theatrum Cutlerianum. SIXTH EDITION of Samuel Garths famous poem (first three editions, 1699) that contains a record of the first attempt to establish a dispensary where poor people could gain advice and prescriptions from the best physicians. Most fellows of the College of Physicians supported the plan, but a minority allied with the apothecaries to thwart the scheme by charging exorbitant prices for the drugs prescribed. The poem satirized the apothecaries and their allies through a mock Homeric battle. This is the first edition to contain the several descriptions and episodes never before printed, adding an additional twenty-four pages to the previous edition. Garths poem gives invaluable insight into the history and manners of seventeenth-century medical practitioners. This edition also contains the engraved frontispiece showing the Warwick Lane entrance to the anatomical theater of the Royal College of Physicians (the Theatrum Cutlerianum), designed by Robert Hooke. The dispensary continued to be generally read for fifty years, and some of its phrases are still quoted. Samuel Garth (1661-1719), was a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, and rose to become physician in ordinary to George I, and physician-general to the British army. DNB, VII, p. 910.
