Product Description
In part the story of its own writing, thisquasi-autobiographical, postmodern novel weaves a tale of jealousy, sex, dope andalcoholism around the theme of the narrator’s so-far frustrated literaryambitions.

The integral and inalienable setting is the urbanMexico of the mid-1980s, with the Cold War still the international political backdrop toeveryday life. Wending his way through angst-ridden erotic entanglements and a sessionwith his Freudian analyst (an anti-Lacanian, we learn), the narrator, who goes by theauthor’s real name, finally arrives at his dream encounter — and‘dream’ may well be doubly apt, because the episode’srelation to everyday reality is left undefined — with famed Latin-Americanauthor and winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982, Gabriel GarcíaMárquez. Perhaps the laureate will write a preface to his latest novel.

“It’s about a guy stuck in traffic; he wantsto be a writer, to be famous, and Mike, one of the characters, tells him he should writethe A Hundred Years of Solitude of the eighties. The guy feels happy at first but thenin the middle of the traffic and the smog he realizes that there aren’t anyAmarantas and Aurelianos Buendías there, there aren’t anyJosé Arcadios, that all there are are drunks, gangs, poor people trampled bythe yuppies — that after all, the jungle is gone.” ... Product Description

Master of magic realism, distinguished journalist and film critic, friend of world leaders ranging from Fidel Castro to Pres. Bill Clinton, Gabriel García Márquez improbably emerged from obscure beginnings to become an author more beloved of readers worldwide than any other living writer. His plots and protean characters plunge readers into the world of fable, yet their universal appeal, as this biography shows, is deeply rooted in the particularity of García Márquez's own idiosyncratic early life and his later wide travels, all undertaken with the restless curiosity and zest for life that he manages to evoke in his readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelente

3-0 out of 5 stars Ningun Novato

4-0 out of 5 stars Estupendo

3-0 out of 5 stars Paralela a Cien Años
... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Stasi State
This book tells the extraordinary story of the clandestine return of movie director Miguel Littín to Chile 12 years after the military coup against the democratically elected President Salvador Allende in 1973.
Miguel Littín's life was saved during the coup by a movie buff: `Didn't you direct "El Chacal de Nahualtoro"?'

The tragic scenes of the coup continue to haunt the director: `gangs of men in civilian clothes clubbing President Allende's supporters to death. We also saw a line of prisoners with their backs against a wall and a squad of soldiers pretending they were going to execute them.'

After the coup, Chile's society turned into a fascist State with book burnings (15000 copies of this book were burned by the Chilean authorities on Nov 28 1986, Nobel Prize winner Pablo Neruda's house was sacked by soldiers who threw his books onto a bonfire), with summary executions, outright killings of opposition militants and spies all over the place; in one word, a Stasi State.

Chile's economy
After the military coup, `within a five-year period more goods were imported than in the previous two hundred years by using dollar credits. But when the time came to pay up, the illusion fell away. Chile's external debt increased to $23 billion, almost six times the debt of the Allende administration.'
Chile's economic `miracle' made a few of the rich much richer and the rest of the Chilean society much poorer.

Free Mason
Salvador Allende was a Free Mason. His grandfather established Chile's first Masonic Lodge. Another member of Salvador Allende's Lodge was Augusto Pinochet. Allende made the terrible mistake to consider Pinochet as a brother, while in fact the latter was a member of an international network of intelligence services. It was his job to keep an eye (and report) on the Lodge's activities.

Salvador Allende's humanistic philosophy, as well as his outstanding statesmanship, continues to be deeply ingrained in the memory of the poblaciones.

G. G. Márquez's book gives a true picture of life under the boots of a fascist dictator.
It is a must read for all historians and for all those who want to understand the world we live in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Non-Fiction By A Master
Gabriel Garcia Marquez is known the world over mostly for his novels, especially "One Hundred Years Of Solitude," and one non-fiction book on the drug wars in Colombia, but one of the least recognized of his jewels is "Clandestine In Chile: The Adventures Of Migue Littin," it is both a chronicle of an exiled artist's return to his homeland and a study of what Chile was like under the right-wing dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. So infuriated was the regime when the book was published that Pinochet ordered thousands of copies to be burned Nazi-style. Like Marquez's novels, "Clandestine In Chile" is poetic and lush, heartwarming and heartbreaking as Littin returns to Chile in disguise to shoot a film on Chile under Pinochet and finds himself wandering a nation changed by rabid capitalism and silenced by intense fascism. In one tense moment Littin lies down in his hotel room bed, only to realize that the city of Santiago is DEAD SILENT after Pinochet's curfew is implemented, no cars, not even dogs make a sound. In beautiful prose Marquez describes the epic landscapes of Chile, of the Andes and the mining communities where the workers almost breath fire from the coal they mine. He chronicles the revolutionary days of Salvador Allende, Chile's and the world's first elected socialist president who sparked the fury of the Nixon White House and was overthrown in a September 11, 1973 coup by Pinochet's forces. We meet Chile's poor as they remember Allende and secretly keep mementos from his days in office before "The Terror" came and the Mapucho river flowed with the corpses of the fascist junta's innocent, often young victims. The passages where Littin and his crew shoot their film under the guise of an environmental documentary team are exciting as they try not to be discovered by the regime's informants and police force. At one point they film inside La Moneda presidential palace and come an inch away from Pinochet himself. Marquez obviously respects Littin very much and his admiration for the man and his work is palpable, and being a friend of Cuba's Fidel Castro, Marquez's contempt for Pinochet and the fascist system that was then in Chile is also evident. This adds a unique emotional intensity to the work, like the best non-fiction he brings history to life instead of just providing a kind of academic report. Film buffs will also enjoy this book for Littin's insights into the guerrilla filmmaking process as he gets his shots by any means necessary, always avoiding getting caught even under the most dangerous circumstances. "Clandestine In Chile" is a masterful book, and of the more underappreciated titles in Gabriel Garcia Marquez's remarkable catalogue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marquez again

5-0 out of 5 stars impresionante, realista,satirico.....
Only an author as talented as Gabriel Garcia Marques is able to write a novel which its name tells you the end and you still can't stop reading it. Fantastic!

2-0 out of 5 stars Binding is Terrible for this version
Don't be fooled by a cute cover and cheap price. The binding for this edition of the book is terrible. I have gone through three books (and I take good care) because all the pages have fallen out just from bending the book back and forth.

I love Garcia Marquez and he is somebody you will want to read again. But this paperback edition won't allow it - the book will break first!!!

Thanks.

4-0 out of 5 stars El fin revelado no afecta

5-0 out of 5 stars INCREIBLE

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the time and price
I might as well write this in English.Since this site is viewed mainly by english speaking readers.

This book is not surprisingly a Very good work by G G Marquez. It is well crafted throughout, and does not bore easily like other books in Spanish (there are lots). It is so well written that you will remember it 5 and 10 years from the first chance.

The othern reviews tell very well what happens in the story. It tells our Latin American cutlure very well, from its names, sounds and traditions/folklore.I am going to purchase 'Amor en tiempos de colera', which is sadi to be a book created assort of sequel to this one.

Santiago Nasar , and the Vicaria family, along with the rest of the inhabitants of the Colombian town in which the book takes place will startle you as one of the best cronicles written, at 105 pages only. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The General in his Labyrinth
The General in his Labyrinth
The General in his Labyrinth was written by Gabriel García Márquez and published by Alfred A. Knopf in New York in 1990. It is the middle of the eighteen hundreds and starts with a man who we know as General Simón Bolívar. He is an old time war hero and is stuck in his glory days when the people of South America believed in his heroism. Everyday he wakes up and tells his most loyal servant that today will be the day when he will finally leave Santa Fe de Bogotá. He has not done so for many years. There have been many attempts on his life; assassins, poisons, and mobs have attempted to take the Generals life but none succeed. The General has been in the front of battles leading the way to the enemy and has never attained even a scratch. Many felt he was invincible.
He finally decides to leave and resigns his presidency. He takes a trip down Magdalena River and remembers all the things that have happened to him when he came here. He also remembers the only goal he has left. He wishes to reunite the "kingdom" he once had. This novel fallows his adventures down the river and through his denial of his own inevitable death and exile, unsure witch fate is worse.
I was not particularly impressed with this book.I enjoy books that are based around an event that has actually occurred but is twisted and changed to be very unrealistic and entertaining. This book, while being modified and yet, still realistic, was too close to reality for my enjoyment. It followed the actual timeline of the life of General Simón Bolívar but did not contain many well written outstanding events in my opinion. To me it seemed that this novel was written, not for the fiction audience, but for the audience of those who wish to know more about General Simón Bolívar. A hero can be great once and lose twice as much as he was great. The General once had life and fame but lost all except his love. One step forward and two steps back
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys history in a fashion that is not its raw core but only one view of this many sided event.
