Product Description
A lost treasure trove (6,000 documents) from her grandmother’s attic about Anne Frank and her family, now woven into a chronicle.

An old lady dies in Basel, Switzerland. Her devoted daughter-in-law, Gertrude, steels herself to do what all families must in the aftermath of death—she heads upstairs to the attic to sort through the effects. But Helene Elias wasn’t just any old lady, and none could put a price on what she left as an inheritance.

Helene Elias was born Helene Frank, sister to Otto Frank, and thus Anne Frank’s aunt. Alice Frank, the matriarch and grandmother of the family, left Germany for Switzerland in the 1930s, and though her family had scattered across Europe, she remained at the hub of their lives. They wrote voluminously, sent photos, visited for summer holidays and reunions, and of course wrote about them when they returned home. Alice kept every bit she could. It all sat upstairs in the house, which was eventually passed down to Alice’s grandson, Buddy Elias, Anne Frank’s childhood playmate, and his wife, Gertrude.

What Gertrude found has become an utterly engaging, endearing, and convincing account of a family that tells us who shaped Anne Frank, made her who she was. They believed themselves to be ordinary members of Germany’s bourgeoisie. That they were wrong is part of history—one that we celebrate here.

Product Description
This is the life story of Anne Frank set chronologically against the significant events of the Holocaust, e.g. Kristallnacht, the Kindertransports and D-Day. Spanning Anne's short life from 1929 to 1945, and the early rise of Hitler to the liberation of the concentration camps, this highly moving account examines both the fate of the Frank family and the wider picture of the Holocaust. Photographs illustrate this engaging yet ultimately harrowing biography, together with short extracts from autobiographies, diaries and letters of other young people who had personal experience of the Holocaust, providing a contrast to Anne's life in hiding. ... Product Description
In the spring of 1945, 15-year-old Anne Frank died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. In 1947, Otto Frank published his daughter’s diary. To date, The Diary of a Young Girl has appeared in more than 50 different editions and has sold more than 20 million copies.

This photo essay is an invaluable resource for readers of Anne’s diary. It offers a portrait of the Frank family, including many never-before-published photographs. And it also provides an account of the events between 1929 and 1945 that forced the Franks into hiding and resulted in their discovery and imprisonment in concentration camps. With more than 250 photographs, this book helps readers to see what Anne saw and brings the turbulent events that shaped her world into sharper focus.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Supplement, Not a Starting Point
More a photographic history of the times than a book about Anne Frank herself, only a small fraction of the 233 photos in this book are photos of Anne and her fellow residents of the Secret Annex.Instead, there are a number of photos from Germany of the 1920's through the end of the second world war. There is also a considerable amount of text, again concentrating mostly on the history of the period instead of Anne's history. If you are not already familiar with Anne's story, you won't learn much of it here.

And therein lies the crux of the problem for me: though there is some interesting text and fascinating photos in this book, if you don't already know Anne's story and the story of the period, it is difficult to learn much from this.Different facets of Nazism and the Frank story are told in a couple paragraphs per page when some of these topics covered in a page have had entire volumes of history written about them.I fear that a young reader would have difficulty understanding things and could be misled if this book is the only source of information.

On the other hand, for someone already familiar with the period, this book can make a very good supplement.I just would not let this book be the first one about the Franks I put in my child's hands.

Right around her 13th birthday the Nazis were taking over Amsterdam anad making the Anti-Jewish rules and Anne Frank was Jewish. Anne went to Montessori school. Then because Anti-jewish laws, she moved into a Jewish Lyceum where she auickly started to adjust.

"Yours Anne, The Life of Anne Frank" is about the life of the well- known girl Anne Frank. During World War II the Nazi's, ruled by Hitler, were on a rage to capture Jews of all ages and bring them to death camps, or what we know today as concentration camps. Anne and her family which consisted of her mother, Edith, her father, Otto, and her sister, Margot, were all Jews during this time which is now known as the Holocaust. On Anne's 13th birthday, she received a diary, which she was constantly writing in, she would write stories, the latest gossip, her crushes, or what was just going on in her daily life. But when Hitler's rage gets out of control, her family must go into hiding, in fear that they too, will be brought to a concentration camp. This hiding spot is known as "The Secret Annex". New insight into the girl whose diary changed the world

Few people know that Anne Frank and her sister, Margot, had pen pals in the United States: Juanita and Betty Wagner, of Danville, Iowa. Although the girls corresponded only briefly, their letters capture a poignant moment in Anne's life, before the Nazis arrived.

Through interviews with people who knew Anne, Margot, Juanita, Betty, and their friends, author Susan Goldman Rubin skillfully contrasts the realities of life in rural America and urban Holland through the duration of World War II. Packed with firsthand reports, photographs (many never before published), and intriguing new information, Searching for Anne Frank provides a vivid look at lives torn apart by war-a subject that has great relevance for today's readers. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The Real Anne & Her Penpals.
This would make a perfect addition to every middle school library as the history in letters and pictures is simply spectacular. It is a lovely book about three girls and their families during a devastating time of war abroad and the Haloucast. One girl is famous because of the diary, given to her on her thirteenth birthday, a red plaid, on June 12, 1942, which survived long after she died in a concentration camp.

I became interested in Annelies Marie Frank in 1956 when a call went out all over the United States for a look-alike to portray her in the movie. They wanted an unknown, so (foolish me) sent in my picture full lenght with shorts and barefoot.Though I looked something likeher in the face, I guess they didn't want a 'Southern' accent on a Dutch girl.Millie Perkins, a model, won out over all of us commoners, though I did receive a letter from Twentieth Century Fox -- don't remember who signed it.I got rid of all my movie memorbilia twenty years ago.Lots of movie posters given to me by an usher at the Tennessee Theater and autographed glossy 8X10s ended up in the garbage can!

The 1959 movie won three Oscars.By then, I was a married woman.I did have a penpal in Sabadell, Spain outside of Barcelona, though he was an older factory worker, not a young girl.

Two Iowa sisters, Betty and Juanita, in Danville were given Anne's address in Amsterdam by a teacher. My picture was in Your Hit Parade magazine and Carlos' borther saw it and wrote to me first, to Kingsville, Texas, but it found its way back to Knoxville, Tennessee!Amazing. Now you can't get a Priority Mail to a few miles, from one post office in town to someone who works in downtown.

Anne attended a Montessori school in 1941 and led a privileged life.We in America did not live so well. Her diary was published in Dutch as THE ANNEX in 1947, and in English, THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK in 1952.

This book in textbook binding was published in association with the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles, California. It is a keepsake for any girl(or woman who lived through those times).

5-0 out of 5 stars Offers unique insight into Anne Frank's famous Diary
Published in association with the Simon Wiesenthal Center-Museum of Tolerance Library and Archives, Searching For Anne Frank: Letters From Amsterdam To Iowa by Susan Goldman Rubin surveys the correspondence between Anne Frank and ten-year-old Juanita Wagner of Danville, Iowa. Juanita chose Anne's name off of a list provided by her teacher for a pen-pal experience; each girl was to see a very different view of the horrific events unfolding in World War II. This poignant look at the brief correspondence between two young girls, filled with black-and-white and color photographs, offers unique insight into Anne Frank's famous Diary, and is a highly recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library 20th Century Biography collections and Holocaust Studies reading lists.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is An Amazing Book
I would rate this book higher than 5 Stars if I could! This is an amazing book.Every young person and every person for that matter should see these photographs and read the text together with the "Diary of Anne Frank".This is a definitely must see.Congratulations to the author on such an important work. The drums of war were sounding in the background as these young pen pals began their correspondence.Who could have imagined the horrors yet to come? That Anne Frank had a pen pal in the United States and that the letters and photos were preserved is just astounding.Through this book, readers can feel Anne Frank's world and return for just a moment to the days just prior to the Nazi Hell to feel more strongly what was lost.I recommend this book to all and especially for young people learning about the Holocaust in a synagogue or church setting. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for The Busy Teacher
I am an extremely busy middle school (6-8) Reading and Language Arts Teacher. At the beginning of the year, I was told that I would only teach Reading but because of budget and number of kids they also asked me to teach LA even though I haven't taught it in previous years. So, all the things I had planned on doing so elaborately with my Reading classes had to be cut-down. However, I have an 7th/8th grade mostly gifted group and wanted to give them a challenge. I chose Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl because it was below level as far as a lot of their lexiles are concerned but instructional level for some of the contextual clue vocab and situational information. A lot of them didn't know what a fountain pen was..

However, the Lit Plan Pack was AMAZING!!! It gave me discussion questions, vocab, multiple choice tests, written tests, lots of extensions, and cross curricular exercises. It is the best product ever and I will continue to buy it for other "chapter books" we read as a class. There are many great activities but because I am limited with time I choose to read parts of the selections in class to them, then give them context clue vocab and open ended discussion questions and give them a week to read 30 pages and do the above. Then, on Friday we go over the answers, and they have about 10 minutes to study (although most of them are quite familiar with the material because they have gone over it many times throughout the week). Then, I will them matching vocab and the multiple choice questions as their test. There is so much more that I am not taking advantage of because I don't have the time but it is perfect for my needs as a busy teacher! ... Read more

Product Description

In this follow-up to her previous memoir, Anne Frank’s childhood friend, Jacqueline van Maarsen, focuses on the reception of Anne’s legacy by her contemporaries and the inevitable commercialization of that legacy of which she is boldly critical. Running throughout the narrative is a literary parallel with an inheritance question that dominated a significant portion of van Maarsen's life and that of her mother's—a courageous woman who confronted the Nazis in Amsterdam and saved her two daughters from the concentration camps by providing evidence of their non-Jewish status. This story documents how both the van Maarsen family inheritance and the inheritance left by Anne Frank became the subject of unwarranted and tragic exploitation by outsiders, often with those charged with guarding both legacies turning a blind eye to the truth. The narrative also provides a subtle commentary on memory and the effects of time. In interweaving personal memories of her own childhood and early adult life with personal memories of Anne Frank and the use and abuse of her legacy, van Maarsen demonstrates how time filters what individuals inherit from their past, sometimes creating parallel worlds in which the historical truth loses significance, pushed aside by dreams of personal status and financial gain.

Product Description
Of all the memoirs that convey the human devastation of Hitler's Final Solution, Anne Frank's "The Diary of a Young Girl" is by far the most popular and influential. Since its publication in Holland in 1947, the diary has been translated into more than fifty languages, reprinted in millions of copies, and transformed into plays, films, teaching guides, and political tracts. These contending interpretations all serve to illuminate as well as obscure the 'real' Anne Frank. This book is the most complete anthology of the disparate facts and interpretations of Anne Frank. Here in a concise, readable volume are two dozen articles and memoirs most relevant for understanding her life, death, and legacy. They assess Anne Frank's qualities as a writer and scrutinize the proliferating controversies about her reputation, especially the way the stage and film versions have altered perceptions of her life and her diary. They also consider how interpreters of Jewish experience in World War II have defined Anne Frank's significance for memorializing the Holocaust.Anne Frank's memoir of eight Jews hiding in an attic for two years continues to resonate as a haunting reminder of the promise of a generation that was almost completely snuffed out.Thrown into relief by the horrors she constantly feared and eventually suffered, the young girl's uninhibited observations and self-analysis retain their poignancy and power. Supplemented by a complete record of the diary's publishing history and an extensive bibliography and index, this book provides an intriguing glimpse at how fact, fiction, history, and legend are intertwined. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Cross-Section of Anne Frank Scholarship
In this book the editors have selected thirty-one excerpts from various writings about Anne Frank and collected them together under four basic ideas: Anne's life, Anne as a writer, Anne on stage & screen and Anne in relationship to the Holocaust.Overall the selection of the writings is very good. They are of high quality and of varying points of view, particularly with reference to the last three sections of the book.

For example, there is considerable difference of opinion to Anne's ability as a writer, some find her skills exceptional while others think her ability overrated despite her impact.Better known are the arguments over whether the play and movie produced from Anne's diary truly reflected the "real" Anne. Then there are the arguments, growing in recent years, as to whether Anne's diary is an "accurate" or "important" portrayal of the Jewish experience during the Holocaust.I may not agree with Lawrence L. Langer's assessment that the diary is not a "vital text" of the Holocaust but seeing his point of view allows me to think a little deeper about my own position. And therein lies the book's real strength.

Ultimately, though the excerpts are brief and it's easy to plow through them rather quickly, this book can open one's eyes. Some of the material I had read before in other places but I was very glad to encounter the wide points of view that the editors were able to gather. The fact that Anne's single work still has the power to generate such scholarship 60 years later seems to point out its continuing importance in our experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb collection!
As part of my effort to learn my role as the dentist in the 1955 version of the play at the local junior college, I read some 14 or 15 books by and about Anne Frank and this one capped my study quite nicely.I recommend it as the one to read after "The Definitive Edition" (or the fascinating "Critical Edition", if you're up to that), Willy Lindwer's "The Last Seven Months", Melissa Muller's "Anne Frank: The Biography", Miep Gies' "Anne Frank Remembered", and Eva Schloss' "Eva's Story".It's scholarly, well edited and footnoted, and has a fine bibliography. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Thouroughly Unimpresses
I have to say tha I was thoroughly unimpressed with this play. The author seems to be using the same characters that we all know and love, but most of them seem out of character. It's also a musical so every once in a while the characters burst out in song. This can be anoying; especially when you consider the fact that there is on music written for it. The authors tell people to write their own simple music. This is a disaster waiting to happen! The redeeming quality of the book is the other "helps" that are included in it. They are very good and in depth dispite how short they are. Overall, I do not recommend this purchase ... Read more
