5-0 out of 5 stars Rare Bond stories unseen since their original syndication
Rare Bond stories unseen since their original syndication, including Polestar, appear in a fine set of graphic novel sagas perfect for any Bond adventure enthusiasts. These have never been collected before and provide outstanding black and white adventures. Any library strong in graphic novels in general and Bond in particular will find it a fine acquisition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bond, the comic strip...pretty darn cool!

North American comic strip fans have been cheated. The James Bond comic strip, which ran in England in the Daily Express, can now be found on American book shelves courtesy of Titan Books.

What a run this strip had. From 1958 to at least 1983 (minus a couple of years), Bond was penned, by Ian Fleming, and Jim Lawrence. Many of the original novels can be found adapted into strip form, and several new stories advanced the Bond canon."Polestar" includes the last 5 complete adventures written by Lawrence and illustrated by McLusky and Horak.
Bond investigates the suntan lotion business and finds himself going Batty in "Flittermouse".In what almost seems inspired by vampires, the dead return to life, and an evil Dr Cat meets his match.Lawrence/McLusky give us a delightful story packed with familiar characters like M, and Suzy Kew. As with every film, this 1983 entry includes Bond girls, technology, witty dialogue, and adventure.
Polestar is set in the Canadian North and includes the Mounted Police as Bond becomes Jack Boyd, fugitive American rocket engineer.Frozen corpsesmark the edges of Polestars domain, and Red Doe is on a mission of revenge.Bond (as Boyd)infiltrates Polestar and Doe `disarms' her mothers' past lover as a mission of world destruction comes to an end.As good as the story is, the art fails on two pages, seeming as a guest artist took over for 10 days.

The other stories,Scent of Danger,Snake Goddess, and Double Eagle, are alll good stories, and with Horak illustrating the last two, end this book (and strip series) on a high note.In terms of art, Horaks' style is second to McLusky with his more realistic, less angluar renderings.
The book includes two extra features. There is a visit to Goldeneye, and an article on the Chilean Bond comic books.Bond girl Valerie Leon provides the introduction with her unique take on the Bond franchise.
Celebrate Bonds'year with Bond in print, Bond onscreen, and Bond in video games.Ian Fleming would be proud.

Product Description
The Second World War spawned a plethora of crack special forces units (Long Range Desert Group, SAS, SBS, Phantom and Commandos) but 30 Assault Unit remains, even today, far more secretive and exclusive than the others.Formed by Ian Fleming, who was working for Naval Intelligence, 30 AU's mission was to penetrate and operate behind enemy lines, capture by whatever means necessary vital intelligence and feed it back to London where it could be assimilated and acted upon. This crack team of commandos included mavericks such as Patrick Dalzel-Job (generally regarded as the model for Fleming's fictional secret agent 007), and less well known (despite their conspicuous bravery) figures such as Captains Huntingdon-Whiteley, Captain Martin-Smith. Lieutenant Commander Curtis and Lieutenant McFee.The author has trawled archives and interviewed veterans in order to piece together the history and record of this elusive special forces unit who fought with great distinction and achieved results disproportionate to their size. ... A solid collection of Bond stories of their time.

Never saw this strip, although luckily we did get Modesty Blaise, pretty cool to comes across collections of stuff like this.

The start gives an overview aimed at the yank market, of how few James Bond comics have been done there, in general.

It also gives the publishing history in comic form in the UK etc. of Fleming's actual stories, and as well as those continue don later.

Plenty of Bond girls and odd villains to be found inthese several strips.

3-0 out of 5 stars Toe-in-the-Water Introduction to Training for Managers
Ian Fleming's book on training for managers offers "...ideas, tips and techniques to help managers identify staff development needs and bring about successful learning."The book contains good information. Its brevity is appropriate, not because the coverage is complete, but because, sadly, it matches the typical manager's attention span for training issues.Still, it is useful as either an introduction or a wake-up call for managers who need greater awareness of training's value.

Several of the book's sections are quite well-written for their manager audience:

- The Reasons for Training section highlights industry change and business necessity arguments that are hard for a practical manager to ignore
- The distinction between organizational, occupational and individual training needs encourages a comprehensive view of reasons for training
- The Finding Learning Opportunities section highlights a number of non-obvious ways to create employee development opportunities (summarized on page 56)

Throughout the book, the author highlights what can go wrong with various training processes and how managers can intervene to get them back on track. The Further Readings section references a cross section of more in-depth books on training.I recommend The Theory and Practice of Training by Roger Buckley and Jim Caple as one of the better ones.

Note that this book is part of the Management Pocketbook series, which is highly recommended. These books provide quick overviews of various topics managers need to know about. The format is similar to printed slides from a PowerPoint presentation. This allows quick review of fundamental information that is organized in a familiar way.

BEWARE:Ian Fleming's The Manager's Training Pocketbook is an earlier edition of this book.It is virtually identical--be sure you do not buy them both! ... Read more

For over half a century, the Bond novels have entertained millions around the world. 007 has been a cultural phenomenon since the first publication of Casino Royale in 1953. But no book has celebrated Fleming's literary Bond in his own right. This is an authoritative and entertaining journey through the world of the original James Bond, from Moscow to Mayfair, the bedroom to the war-room, the casino to the villain's lair.Ian Fleming's archive has released never-before seen documents and material to create this book. Sources include research notes and diaries to annotated manuscripts and ephemera from Fleming's files.Illustrated with classy, contemporary images, the book is a visual feast, but it is also engaging, with a rigorous and satisfying text. It recaptures the glamour of an age, and offers a new insight into the twentieth century's most thrilling literary hero. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST BOND SO FAR
I'm reading the James Bond Series in order and now I'm on Goldfinger , but of the ones I've read so far this is the best! Fleming attaches you to this book! It's so exciting when Bond is at the Everglades and Felix getting eaten by the shark, the warehosue fight, and the chilling climax and Bond's swim from Morgan's Harbour! It's a great book and my favorite so far. It has the girl, the villian eveyrhting needed in a Bond book! The best bond I've read!

4-0 out of 5 stars More Like 3-and-a-half stars
I enjoyed this book, I did, it wasn't bad...It just wasn't great either. This is Fleming's second "Bond" book, and compared to his first one,"Casino Royale," it's not that great. Don't get me wrong, bond fan's will love it, it has great action sequences, but it just lacks something that Casino Royale had...I don't know, just forget everything I've just said and read the book, you'll like it. Really, you will.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vintage Bond!
This might not be the best of the Bond tales(that priviledge goes to"From Russia with Love") it is still one of the mostpulse-pounding of the lot!The excitement almost makes you shiver: Bondalmost gets ripped in half by shark, barracuda, octopuses, the lot!Healmost gets killed by mega-sharp corals!Yep, the action is darn good. The only reasons I didn't give this book 5 stars is because the plotdoesn't exactly set the world alight(unlike some of his others) and thecharacter of the Bond girl, Solitaire, isn't very wellwritten/characterized, but at least she isn't some bimbo who lacks commonsense of any sort just like the ones in the movies!Anyway, I highlyrecommend this book.As the reviewer before me said, don't let the moviefool you, the book has almost nothing in common with it!That's what makesit even better!

4-0 out of 5 stars A vanished America the exotic locale for this Bond adventure
The couple of generations who formed ideas of Ian Fleming's James Bond from the movies are unlucky, because when the films started rewriting the books wholesale (from the 5th, You Only Live Twice, film on), they lost much of Fleming's special color. This second Bond book, set in the first Eisenhower administration, takes 007 to New York's Harlem, by coastal train to Florida, and to the West Indies in pursuit of Mr. Big, an African-American criminal mastermind. (Of course the book doesn't use phrases like "African-American;" Fleming's offhand racism, like his male chauvinism and anti-Communism, are the givens of his time and place which we either overlook or avoid.) But there are splendidly evocative descriptions of America passing from the pinched pursestrings of the Depression and war years into the fattened 50s, especially the train journey Bond undertakes with Big's psychic gal-trophy, Solitaire. Nobody else managed to mix nostalgia for Britain's waning empire with envy for America's growing Cold-War power quite like Fleming -- and he was a keenly observant (if sometimes insufferably self-satisfied) and resourceful storyteller.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
This book was a good book to the James BOnd series, but it was not the best. Although a movie was made about it, they are almost completly different. It seems that the movie, 'License to Kill' was closer to thebook 'Live and Let Die' than the movie, 'Live and Let Die.' This bookfeatures the part where Felix is fed to the sharks (but he lives), just thesame as the movie 'License to Kill.' The plot in the book is almostcompletely different than the movie 'Live and Let Die.'

But don't get mewrong, this book is definitly worth reading. In fact, you should read it ifyou plan on reading James Bond books that occur after this book. Itcontains some helpful information. Over all, this book was not bad, it justwasn't the best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of the Fleming Collector
Ian Fleming: a catalogue of a collection is an Excellent Book, the one and only Bibliography produced to date. Its 71 pages are filled with information not readilly avaliable anywhere else, such as details of periodicals and reference material. Iain Campbell's collection yeilds many one-and-only items, such as letters to people who had dealings with Ian Fleming and his reaserch, special proof and advance readers copies (that are not believed to exist any more), and details of the Fleming First editions. The book is in wrappers (not a hardback-there was no hardback) with a clear plastic dust-jacket. It was privately printed by Commersgate in Oxford in 1978, (in an edition of about 1000, I will presume). It is difficult to say how many items are listed, but there can be up to and above 20 per page. The sections on the novels are divided into: First Edition, Proof Copies, Source Material, Antologies, Book Reviews, Book Club editions,Paperbacks(U.K), Foriegn editions, Film Brochures and related, and finnaly film Reviews. Other sections relate to the books and periodicals related to James Bond and Ian Fleming, (biographies, reference, critisicm, review). As you will suspect, much more thoughrer than you would expect of a 'Preliminary to a bibliography'. ...
Overall, the Campbell reference work on Fleming is an invaluable reference to any Fleming Collector. I have refered to it hundreds of times since i purchased it, as, I'm sure, you will! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fleming's Life and Work
Henry A. Zeiger is a writer and playwright who analyzed the career of Ian Fleming, and wrote this 1965 biography. Zeiger tells how many of Fleming's experiences in Naval Intelligence during the War were used in his fictional exploits about "James Bond". This book lacks an index. Chapter 1 tells about Fleming's early life. His father came from a wealthy banking/stock broker background, and died in World War I. This explains Bond as a conspicuous consumer of the finer things of life, and as a Conservative. Chapter 2 says Fleming was educated at Eton, and became "an athlete of exceptional power" (p.27). Fleming then went to Sandhurst, but refused a commission in the cavalry. He chose the Foreign Service and studied languages at Geneva and Munich, but failed to get an opening. He then got a job at Reuters, and succeeded by "his attention to detail and his willingness to take on little assignments" (p.34). Fleming's first story was to cover the trial of British engineers arrested in Moscow in 1933 as spies. "Sabotage" could be the usual problems found at the low end of the learning curve (p.45). The OGPU method for extracting confessions is on page 52. After his success, Fleming left for a job as a merchant banker and more money.

Chapter 3 tells of Fleming's talents for intelligence: good languages and business knowledge. Fleming oversaw various activities and reported to the Director of Naval Intelligence (p.65). The early days of the war saw mistakes, but these were replaced by successes (pp.70-72). Pages 76-78 tell of Fleming's intelligence unit "30AU". His wartime background was used to write his adventure novels. After the war Fleming returned to journalism. Chapter 4 discusses Fleming's life after the war, and his career as a novelist. Fleming admired the American writers of the modern thriller, and the importance of pace (keeping the reader's interest). Concrete details were used to add verisimilitude to the fantasy plot, set in interesting and exciting place. Fleming's favorite car was the two-seat 1955 Thunderbird (p.103). Sales of Fleming's novels soared after JFK's recommendation (p.114).

Chapter 5 presents Zeiger's analysis of Fleming's stories. Like some Eric Ambler stories, they show an individual struggling against superior forces, and winning via personal fortitude. (As if life werethat simple!) Does this popularity tell something about our society? Popular literature has always dealt with violence (the Iliad, Beowulf, the Song of Roland). Other novels deal with sex more than Fleming does. Was James Bond a hero in an age of anti-heroes (p.125)? Zeiger critiques "Casino Royale" for its death of Le Chiffre before the end of the story (pp.126-137). Was Fleming toying with conventional plots? Wasn't his style different from Raymond Chandler's (p.128)? Why does Bond travel by train rather than plane (p.129)? But that's what Fleming did in the 1940s, and Bond would do in 1950s Europe. Drax's cheating at cards is a sign that he is not an English Gentleman (p.131). Zeiger comments on other Fleming stories. [I found "The Spy Who Loved Me" not equal to the earlier stories. Could it have been ghost-written?] Zeiger describes the villain as basically a none upper-class Englishman, who lacks good manners and correct tastes (pp.142-143); none are from inherited wealth (p.145). Does this reflect the fears of a declining upper-class world (p.146)? This is the background of Ian Fleming (p.148). Does James Bond represent a fantasy life that Ian Fleming wanted (p.149)? Zeiger's analysis will shine a new light on these old stories.
