The golden journey to Samarkand
Flecker was a British poet who died young but still managed to produce a brilliant collection of poems which are almost totally unknown among Americans.He is one of my favorite poets.He was a friend of Lawrence of Arabia and it is with Arabia that he is identified -- not the real Arabia, but a fantasy Arabia that was the locale of a play called Hassan, which was produced with music by Delius.At his best he is wonderful -- "the dragon-green, the luminous, the dark, the serpent-haunted sea"!One of his finest achievements was to write two poems, "Pillage" and "The War-song of the Saracens", which present the same situation from the viewpoints of the conquerors and the conquered, both poems being in the same metrical structure, but the first one being languid and the other one energetic. ... 1922. Hassan is one of two plays written by James Elroy Flecker. Flecker received his education at Uppingham and Trinity College, Oxford. He then joined the Consular Service in 1908 and was posted to Constantinople in 1910 where he met and married Helle Skiadaressi. From 1911 to 1913 Flecker served as vice-consul at Beirut. Suffering from tuberculosis, he moved to Switzerland where he died. Influenced both by his classical education and by his experiences in the Orient, he published five books of poetry: The Bridge of Fire; Thirty-six Poems; Forty-two Poems; The Golden Journey to Samarkand; and The Old Ships. He also brought out a novel, The King of Alsander. Flecker's two successful plays, Hassan and Don Juan, came out posthumously. ... Read more

James Elroy Flecker (1884-1915) was an English poet, novelist and playwright. As a poet he was most influenced by the Parnassian poets. He was born in London, and educated at Dean Close School, Cheltenham, where his father was headmaster, and Uppingham School. He studied at Trinity College, Oxford, and Caius College, Cambridge. While at Oxford he was greatly influenced by the last flowering of the Aesthetic movement there, under John Addington Symonds. From 1910 he was in the consular service, in the Eastern Mediterranean. His most widely known poem is "To a Poet a Thousand Years Hence". The most enduring testimony to his work is perhaps an excerpt from "The Golden Journey to Samarkand" inscribed on the clock tower of the barracks of the British Army's 22nd Special Air Service regiment in Hereford.
