Product Description
"The more I make love, the more I want revolution; the more I make revolution, the more I want to make love."In Paris, in May of 1968, revolution, and love are very much in the air. The barricades are going up, the students of the Sorbonne are taking to streets alive with the graffiti of revolt, and the Odeon is ablaze with speechmaking.

For Annie, a young American painter, and Julian, her Portuguese lover, a banker and anarchist, the events of that Paris spring form the backdrop against which their love affair is played. Annie sees the world through an artist's eyes; she is reckless in her passions, wanting and needing love with other people. There is none of this fanciful nonsense for Julian, an anarchist disdainful of the entire human race, who thinks even the enragé students storming the streets of Paris with there posters proclaiming "open the windows of your heart" and "revolution is the ectsasy of history" to be hopelessly naïve and sheeplike. Ferlinghetti charts the progress of love unfolding against those heady and momentous days when the pampered children of the bourgeoisie tried to find common cause with workers who despised them, "when Julian and Annie were in the heat of their love and reason."

Love in the Days of Rage is a work of lyricism and commitment, painting and politics, passion and intellect-a work to set beside the great expatriate novels of earlier generations. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Lyrical Novella by a 1960's Beat Poet
This is a short novel with a lyric quality similar to a poem.As far as I know, this is Ferlinghetti's only novel since his works of poetry in the 1960's.

It is a story about two lovers who meet in Paris in the 1960's amidst the student revolution. She is a true revolutionary. He's a banker but swears to be an anarchist working for the revolution on his own.

The story line is thin. The love scenes are beautifully wrought - - an impressionist painting in words.

"His body stirred and floated away, borne away by foreign currents, by alien gulf streams it seemed impossible to swim against, his body broke the surface and disappeared into the very heart of light, while she sank back and back, through the deep swirling waters, into the deep pearl, the final mystery . . . When she awoke, he was gone. (p. 39) ... Read more

Product Description
"The Mexican Night" is the first of several travel journals, to be published over the next few years, which Ferlinghetti originally envisioned under the title of "Writing Across the Landscape." It is considerably more than a travel book, including as it does much pure prose-poetry, new poems, and drawings taken from the author's notebooks. This book is not only personal but political, white at times it would seem to be a kind of "travel novel" - with but one character - the wandering figure (somehow surrounded with solitude) of the poet himself. 3-0 out of 5 stars The Mexican Night is a peculiar read.
The Mexican Night is a peculiar read. It's a travel journal of all his thoughts and escapades throughout Mexico that bounces haphazardly from topic to topic. The Mexican Night still has Feringhetti's poetic brillance but unfortunately lacks depth in comparison to his other writings. Strangely, the book reflects Kerouac's style with the prose form poetics, but doesn't have the unique poetic precision that is characteristic of Ferlinghetti. Nevertheless, the Mexican Night is a travel journal of a poet. So,the book is not necessarily a poetry book, but a thought journal of a unique poet that will always be a literary great. But the Mexican Night deviates from his usual writings that people would be familiar with. The Mexican Night reflects an interesting versitility of writing style from a exceptional poet. I definately recommend the Mexican Night to the Ferlinghetti enthusiast but not necessarily as an introduction to his writings. ... Read more

Product Description

A blow-by-blow unearthing of the places where the Beat writers first came to full bloom: the flat where Ginsberg wrote "Howl;" Gary Snyder's zen cottage in Berkeley; the ghostly railroad yards where Kerouac and -Cassady toiled; the pads where Jack & Neal & Carolyn lived; Ferlinghetti's favorite haunts. This meticulous guide also brings to light never-before-heard stories about Corso, Bob Kaufman, DiPrima, Kyger, Lamantia and other West Coast Beats. A entertaining read as well as a practical walking (and driving) tour that covers the entire Bay Area. With an introduction by Lawrence Ferlinghetti.

Bill Morgan is a painter and archival consultant working in New York City. He is the author of The Beat Generation in New York: A Walking Tour of Jack Kerouac's City.

5-0 out of 5 stars San Francisco before things changed.
I lived in The City from '67 to '73 and was there during the heyday of Haight Ashbury and the mammoth explosion of all that was pre-Altimont but for some strange reason Beat San Francisco was far more important in my memory than The Haight. The reasons probably have much to do with why I finished Morgan's short book in only a day because I became so involved in his descriptions of the places that I considered my San Francisco-all of Upper Grant after it crosses Columbus with Caffe'Trieste and the New Pisa and of course City Lights, Discovery and Vesuvio with Tosca watching from the other side of the street.

Even though I now live on the other side of the planet, these places are burned into my memory. They're memories of cold winter evenings searching for the inevitable bargain in Discovery and then going next door to City Lights to troll through its basement looking at all the titles that I wanted but couldn't afford as a student. And on Saturday afternoons going into Trieste and buying a cafe' and knowing that not so many years ago this place was the epicenter for guys that wore old berets, had beards and thought.

I am indebted to Bill Morgan for writing such a heartwarming look back at a time and place that will go on in the hearts of Americans that realize there was a recent time when things could have gone another way.It didn't happen but with people like him keeping the memory alive and people who care enough to take pictures of City Lights for people like me who remember- perhaps all has not been lost.

Buy the book and revisit these modern American icons before they are redeveloped. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ferlingheti on Karl Marx.
The Father of Communism, his Communist Manifesto became the basis for a whole way of life. These poems, written for the woman who would eventually become his wife while he was still in his youth show that youth, but they are a way to see deeper into the soul of a man who would become famous for his written word, just not this type of written word.Lawrence Ferlingheti does a great job translating something that I'm sure might have seemed almost sophomoric in it's attempts to speak of love when it was still something very new to the writer. All in all, something worth having, and worth having in print again. It's apparently a rarity, and I was lucky enough to obtain a copy for a fairly low price, but still, knowing it existed, I likely would have tried to obtain it at a higher price anyway, just to have it. ... Product Description

Real Conversations No. 1 is a collection of lengthy interviews with indie-media luminaries Henry Rollins, Jello Biafra, Billy Childish, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, the first in a series of interview books. These punks and poets extemporize passionately, angrily, hopefully, fearfully, and humorously on how to stay independent in a corporatized world, covering everything from SUVs, the WTO, and the prison industry to visual art, punk music, independent presses, and artistic and political protest. Filled with controversial, sometimes conflicting, and occasionally unexpected commentary born of years of artistic, industry, and political experience, this book appeals to a broad cross-section of progressive artists, writers, independent publishers, producers, skateboarders, intellectuals, and activists. These funny, entertaining, enlightening, deep discussions about the sources of creativity, philosophy, ethics, and the meaning of life are inspiring and provocative.

Product Description

This is the first critical study to come to grips with the work of Ferlinghetti, a man who eludes classification because he practices most forms of art, because he is both educated (doctorate from the Sorbonne) and streetwise, and because for more than 25 years he has followed the “expansive and dangerous tradition of the poet who boldly seeks Rimbaud’s goal ‘to change life’ through his art.”

Explaining his method, Smith notes that “By approaching Lawrence Ferlinghetti as the contemporary poet-prophet of engagement and wonder we can more truly understand both his methods and his multi-achievement as: oral poet, poet of the streets, super realist, actualist of the public nightmare, political poet, poetry-and-jazz poet, bohemian poet, painter-poet, absurd expressionist dramatist, avant-garde novelist, anti-Art poet, and, finally, visionary poet of consciousness.”

What can you say to a young person who wants to write? How about "Give a Reading!" If City Lights did not exist, there would be one very small list of titles coming out of San Francisco. I don't say thateveryone that has gone to North Beach has eventually become a publishedauthor...but...when you even have a movie; like that of the KeeferSutherland & "Captain America" (Easy Rider )which ends ("starts-off") at The CITY LIGHTS BOOKSTORE in San Francisco, andDennis Hopper is the "Beat" who finally makes it; it is atribute, and should inspire the younger artists to give it a try-andtellall the "wiser" Bohemians to give it "another try!"Read the stuff from the guy that supportedall the other strugglingvoices, and breath easy. ... Excerpt: Irwin Allen Ginsberg (pronounced ; June 3, 1926 April 5, 1997) was an American poet who vigorously opposed militarism, materialism and sexual repression. In the 1950s, Ginsberg was a leading figure of the Beat Generation, an anarchic group of young men and women who combined poetry, song, sex, wine and illicit drugs with passionate political ideas that championed personal freedoms. Major literary works of the Beat Generation include the novels On The Road by Jack Kerouac and Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs, as well as Ginsberg's epic poem Howl, in which he celebrates his fellow "angelheaded hipsters" and excoriates what he saw as the destructive forces of capitalism and conformity in the United States. The poem, dedicated to writer Carl Solomon, has a memorable opening: I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed bymadness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawnlooking for an angry fix... Howl made Ginsberg famous because of a 1957 obscenity trial in which a San Francisco prosecutor argued it contained "filthy, vulgar, obscene, and disgusting language." The poem seemed especially outrageous in 1950s America because it depicted both heterosexual and homosexual copulation at a time when sodomy laws made homosexual acts a crime in every U.S. state. Howl reflected Ginsberg's own bisexuality and his ho...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1017 ... Read more
