We just saw the Wall-E movie and my 3 year old was just in love with it. He's asked for a Wall-E book, so we purchased this one. It's really sweet and written well (both for the story and for learning to read.) It was one of the best of the Wall-E books out there.

Literary short stories by established and emerging writers

Excerpts:

Karen Outen Inside the Universe of His Parents Unless he came to know that, unless he came to that new shore just beyond him, that place where he might understand the two of them, then the rest of the world would never make sense. He would never find anchor.

Michael Schiavone Ghost Pain We met last summer, the two of us partnering up for The Monkey's Fist Bluefish Tournament. He told me he'd make a good teammate because of his insomnia. "I can fish all night and that's when the big bastards show up," he'd said.

Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig Monkeys of the Sea Connor had given up meat at age fourteen after seven summers of 4-H heartbreak. His first love had been an American Yorkshire sow named Tina.

Eric Scot Tryon A Handful of Ones "You know," my father continues once they've left, "your mother and I have lived our lives. We've done things. We're okay with how things are now."

Maggie Shipstead Via Serenidad She was the type of teenager who moved from childhood to adulthood with the minimum of blooming, looking essentially the same, only older.

Juan Martinez Well Tended The summer's been too long, too full of afternoons where one judge show rolls after the other. I've watched them all. The one with the man holding a bat. The one where Kato Kaelin's the bailiff. The one where the judge always cries.

Clark E. Knowles Boxville, East Boxville There are two sets of sterling earring studs in the package, and Betty begs her mother to let her get her ears pierced. Ellen grabs her daughter's earlobes one by one, squeezes them like she might a fruit to see if the ears are ripe enough for holes.

Xu Xi Interview by Anne de Marcken I think my sense of place derives from a lack of a national identity. Hong Kong is a unique political and historical accident that, for better or worse, is what I'm stuck with as the reality of my origins, and is my major cultural influence.

Paul Michel Not the King of Prussia He used to look out of it as he dressed for work, listening to Marta in the kitchen below, smelling the good smells of coffee and bacon, watching herons and cormorants and even eagles, right here in the city, hunting their breakfasts in the still green waters.

Elizabeth Koch Would You and Other Relevant Questions Outside, she stood in front of a tree with colored Christmas lights. Snow stuck to her lashes so the lights blurred and swirled like tie-dyed fabric, like swatches of clothing flung from many floors above.

Michael Poore The Beekeeper After an hour of zigzagging through desert broom--it was a miracle they didn't run afoul of the Border Patrol the Mexican screamed, "Alto!" An old woman lay curled up amidst the remains of a camp. A few plastic bags full of clothes, some energy bars, a sack of nuts and raisins. She was dead.

Product Description
In The Quest for Citizenship, Kim Cary Warren examines the formation of African American and Native American citizenship, belonging, and identity in the United States by comparing their educational experiences in Kansas between 1880 and 1935. Warren focuses her study on Kansas, thought by many to be the quintessential free state, not only because it was home to sizable populations of Indian groups and former slaves, but also because of its unique history of conflict over freedom during the antebellum period.

After the Civil War, white reformers opened segregated schools, ultimately reinforcing the very racial hierarchies that they claimed to challenge. To resist the effects of these reformers' actions, African Americans developed strategies that emphasized inclusion and integration, while autonomy and bicultural identities provided the focal point for Native Americans' understanding of what it meant to be an American. Warren argues that these approaches to defining American citizenship served as ideological precursors to the Indian rights and civil rights movements.

This comparative history of two nonwhite races provides a revealing analysis of the intersection of education, social control, and resistance, and the formation and meaning of identity for minority groups in America. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A close study of the educational experience for African Americans and Native Americans in Kansas
University of Kansas assistant professor of history Kim Cary Warren presents The Quest for Citizenship: African American and Native American Education in Kansas, 1880-1935, a close study of the educational experience for African Americans and Native Americans in Kansas during the close of the nineteenth and the first third of the twentieth centuries. Kansas has been chosen as a particular focus point partly because it was home to a significant population of Native Americans and former slaves, and partly because it was mired in the middle of the conflict over slavery prior to and during the Civil War. After the Civil War, white reformers created segregated schools that ultimately supported the status quo. The Quest for Citizenship reveals strategies developed by African Americans that encouraged inclusion and integration, while Native Americans adopted tactics that promoted autonomy and bicultural identity. Warren presents a convincing thesis that these efforts formed the parent ideology the civil rights and Indian rights movements. Also available in a hardcover edition, The Quest for Citizenship is a thoughtful examination of the educational, philosophical, and developmental history of nonwhite peoples in the United States, highly recommended as a worthy addition to college and public library American History shelves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Art!
My mother loved the BBC radio production of this play, with Imogen Stubbs as Lizzie Siddal; I thought it was very good, but the book is better.

The only thing many people know about William Morris is his wallpaper, andof Rossetti is that he dug up his wife's grave to retrieve poems he'd buried with her (including poems to his mistress). Clever As Paint not only explains how someone could do something like that, but makes it seem like a reasonable thing to do. Siddal's ghost refusing to give him the wording to the poem seems natural as well - what wife would ever give her husband the text to a love poem written to another?

Clever as Paint is beautiful and useful: a very funny black comedy, based on solid historical research. It benefits from being read, and reread, since there are so many levels to the play. It's witty without sacrificing compassion and even though it is very funny, the despair and grief of Rossetti is genuine. The poetry quoted is glorious and the book includes sheet music for Siddal's poems composed by Elizabeth Parker.

This play is a delight for people who know nothing of the Rossettis, and a joy for those who do. ... Read more
