Product Description

In this robust collection Crystal Bacon explores vision and the nature of myth-making, from cultural archetypes, such as Persephone and Narcissus, to Anne Frank and Chet Baker, to the personal myths that shape individual lives. Additionally, these poems, written from Bacon's perspective and adopted personas, examine the timeless themes of birth and death, love and loss, maleness and femaleness.

As a Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation poet, Crystal Bacon led writing seminars for high school teachers in southern New Jersey. Her work has appeared in publications in the US and Canada as well as the anthology, Urban Nature: Poems about Wildlife in the City. A professor at Gloucester County College, she divides her time between New Jersey and Nova Scotia.

2-0 out of 5 stars Occasionally clever, rarely interesting.
Being an admirer of Stephen Dunn's simple, potent work, I am surprised to see his name associated with this collection. Though the author manages to occasionally produce some interesting wordcraft, her work is mired in the pretentions that plague academic poetry, relying too heavily on references to classical works and mythology instead of more human elements. In addition, many of her works are too abstract, in my opinion, to really involve the reader. In summation, this collection is not one I'd consider a necessary or worthwhile addition to one's bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seeks to invoke feelings with word clad imagery
In her poetry, Crystal Bacon seeks to invoke feelings with word clad imagery that evokes a compelling authority by way of mind inspired, mythos influenced, thoughtfully emotional reader response. Product Description

This reissue was first published in 1982. It deals specifically with the ‘Asiatic mode of production’ described by Karl Marx in his basic evolutionary model for human society. The term defines a special form of society marked by state ownership of the means of production and extensive intervention by the state in all forms of social life.  In the soviet Union, the concept has had a chequered and controversial career: leading writers, primarily Stalin, have denied its very existence, mobilizing the heavy artillery of state ideology in their defence, whilst later scholars show signs of reversing this trend.

Drawing on a large body of Soviet writing on historiography, Stephen Dunn develops a critical analysis of the issue, and introduces important corrections to the accounts hitherto available in the West. His work should be of major interest to students of Soviet politics, economists and Marxists.

As the title implies, Jam features a wealth of poems driven by a distinct music resulting from Joe-Anne McLaughlin's studies in both jazz and blues. Propelled by strong rhythms and line breaks, McLaughlin's poems present a variety of colorful characters trying to get by on the strength of "Waller's boogies / or Morton's rolls / Hot Lips' riffs / or Bessie's groans." An original and exciting voice, McLaughlin's poems are introduced by award-winning poet and essayist Stephen Dunn. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book for Post Keynesian true believers;however,Dunn has no idea what Keynes accomplished in decision theory
Dunn essentially takes Paul Davidson's incorrect claims that (a)economic decision making takes place within a non ergodic process through time,and (b)that Keynes's theories of probability and decision making rests on the assumption of thenonergodic economic process or nature of the worldand develops it to its logical conclusions.This analysis will be welcomed by the post Keynesian true believer.I will concentrate my review on Part II of the book where Dunn demonstrates that he has no idea about what it was that Keynes accomplished in the A Treatise on Probability(TP;1921)and The General Theory of Employmant ,Interest,and Money (GT;1936),which is an application of Keynes's work on decision making in the TP.Dunn's book completely overlooks the fact that Paul Davidson had no understanding about the technical foundations of Keynes's microfoundations for his macroeconomic theory in the General Theory.Those foundations can be found in Keynes's earlier work,the A Treatise on Probability (1921). The foundation of Neoclassical economics is merely the mathematical development of a theoretical approach first proposed by Jeremy Bentham in 1787.Bentham claimed that all individuals have the capability to calculate the odds and outcomes and act on the expected value (the probability times the outcome) in a rational way.This can be expressed by the following ,where p is the probability of success and A is the outcome:
Maximize pA.

The modern version of this is to Maximize pU(A),where p is a subjective probability that is additive,linear,precise,and exact.U(A) is a Von Neumannn-Morgenstern Utility function.The goal is to

Maximize pU(A).

The modern name for Benthamite Utilitarianism in neoclassical economics is SEU theory(Subjective Expected Utility).Therefore,a microeconomic foundation based on Utility Maximization is just Benthamite Utilitarianism updated with modern mathematical techniques.

Dunn is completely unaware about the reasons whyKeynes rejected Benthamite Utilitarianism as a very special case that would only hold under the special assumptions of the subjectivist,Bayesian model-that all probabilities were additive,linear,precise,single number answers that obeyed the mathematical laws of the probabiity calculus.

Keynes specifies his conventional coefficient of risk and weight,c, model in chapter 26 of the TP on p.314 and fotnote 2 on p.314.Keynes then integrated his c coefficient into the elasticity analysis in chapter 21 of the GT,pp.304-306, in order to show that the standard Equation of Exchange was a special case of his generalized equation of exchange.The crucial elasticities,which play the role of w in Keynes's analysis in the GT,are e and ed subscript.These must equal 1 in neoclassical theory in the same manner that w must equal 1 in neoclassical theory.

Essentially, Keynes's generalized model is given by

c=2pw/(1+q)(1+w),

where w is Keynes's weight of the evidence variable that measures the completeness of the relevant available evidence upon which the probabilities p and q are calculated.(Benthamite Utilitarians assume that the value of w is 1.)It is an index defined on the unit interval between 0 and 1,p is the probability of success,and q is the probability of failure.p+q sum to 1 if they are additive.This requires w=1.Keynes's c coefficient can be rewritten as

c=p [1/(1+q)][2w/(1+w)].

Now multiply by A or U(A).One obtains

cA= p[1/(1+q)][2w/(1+w)]A.

The goal is to maximuze cA or cU(A).The weight 1/(1+q) deals with non linearity.The weight 2w/(1+w) deals with non additivity.

It is now straightforward,except for neoclassical economists and Post Keynesians, like P Davidson,G L S Shackle,D Vickers,J Kregel,and S P Dunn, to see that the neoclassical microfoundationsassume that all probabilities are additive and linear.This is nothing but a special case of Keynes's generalized decision rule to maximize cA,or cU(A),as opposed to the neoclassical pA or pU(A).It is now clear that Keynes had created general theories of macroeconomics,probability,and decision making.Keynes's accomplishments,if understood,place him as the only rival to Einstein for the title of the greatest scientist of the 20th century. Hwever,Dunn understands none of this.

It was technically impossible for Paul Davidson to accept Keynes's theories becauseDavidson, like Shackle ,accepted the standard frequency interpretation of probability view that all probabilities were linear,additive,precise,single number answers which were subject to the addition and multiplication rules of the probability calculus.It is impossible to fit Davidson and Keynes together because they had fundamental differences about the nature of probability.Keynes's views on subjective expectations , which were based on a w < 1 and probabilities that were non linear and sub or super additive,made no sense to Davidson or Shackle.This accounts ,for example,for the Joan Robinson-G HHarcourtattack on Keynes's theory of investment and marginal efficiency of capital (MEC)as presented in chapter 11 of the GT . Keynes's analysis was ultimately based on the c coefficient analysis of non additive,non -linear probabilities which Keynespresented in modified form in chapter 21 of the General Theory (1936) on pp.304-306 in the form of the elasticiites e and ed subscript.

It does not appear possible to this reviewer to connect Davidson and Keynes as far as their technical analysis is concerned.However,it does appear to be the case that similar conclusions were reached by both Davidson and Keynes.However,Davidson's analysis would require special assumptions that Keynes did not require since Davidson's analysis basically grafts Keynes's conclusions onto a Frankenstein body composed of the analysis of Dennis Robertson and Harry Johnson.Keynes's approach would include Davidson's approach as a special case where w,the weight of the evidence,equals 0.

Product Description
The recent financial crisis has once again seen John Kenneth Galbraith return to the bestseller lists. Yet, despite the continued popular success of his works, Galbraith's contribution to economic theory is rarely recognised by today's economists. This book redresses the balance by providing an introductory and sympathetic discussion of Galbraith's theoretical contributions, introducing the reader to his economics and his broader vision of the economic process. The book highlights and explains key features of Galbraith's economic thought, including his penetrating critique of society, his distinctive methodology, his specific brand of Keynesianism and his original - but largely ignored - contribution to the theory of the firm. It also presents, for the first time, a detailed examination of Galbraith's monetary economics and revisits his analysis of financial euphoria. This unique work seeks to rehabilitate Galbraith's contribution, setting out several directions for possible future research in the Galbraithian tradition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reconciliation between Christianity & Nature
In purchasing this book I was looking for a theological basis for my Church Ecological Justice group. I am pleased to say I found it in the awesome combination of the earth spirituality of Thomas Berry CP and thetraditional theology of the cross that Thomas Clarke SJ expounds so eloquently.

Berry says that originally Christianity had two sources of revelation the Bible and Nature but that over time the Church has gradually abandoned the latter. He poses the question how do we achieve reconciliation? Clarke argues persuasively that the Christian story with its powerful message of redemption told through the passion and suffering of Christ should be the means of that reconciliation. The Jesuit speaks of 'cultural disparagement' that is the denial of dignity of the 'poor'(ie the outcasts of society, women, indigenous people and members of Eastern religions) Not only are we called on to be compassionate to the poor but that 'in a very mysterious way the power for the redemption of humanity has been placed within the poor' and they are 'the key to the redemption of the planet, the key to the redemption of all species' (#61) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential guide needed for using the O'Connor manuscripts at GC&SU...
Offers a description of the arrangement of O'Connor's manuscripts in the Flannery O'Connor Collection in the Ina D. Russell Library at Georgia College & State University and notes that they illustrate how she "often produced dozens of variants of single episodes."

Discusses in particular the large number of drafts that exist for her last two stories -- "Parker's Back" and "Judgement Day" -- and indicates that they "suggest the amount of rewriting that O'Connor normally did [for her stories] and, consequently, how many of the drafts for her other fiction are missing."

Entries in the catalog "describe the physical appearance of the manuscripts in the folders and files, and the plot, characters and stylistic and formal characteristics of their contents." Details the arrangement of the 905 folders in 297 files and how they are cross-referenced to other related files. Provides an index which "shows the order of the files and folders...[and] how [Driggers'] file numbers differ from Dunn's. Also included is a timneline indicating dates O'Connor is believed to have worked on each piece of fiction.

Excerpt: George Lawrence "Larry" James (November 6, 1947 November 6, 2008) was an American track athlete. James was born on November 6, 1947, in Mount Pleasant, New York, and took up track in seventh grade. He attended White Plains High School, where he competed in the intermediate hurdles and the triple jump. A double medalist at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, James also set world records and won NCAA titles during his track career. James won the silver medal in the 400 m with his time of 43.97 seconds at the 1968 Summer Olympics, bettering the existing world record but placing him second behind teammate (and fellow Hall of Famer) Lee Evans (43.86). James added a gold medal at the Mexico City Games by running the third leg on the U.S. 4x400 m relay team, which set a world record of 2:56.16 seconds, which lasted until 1992. James set the 400 m world record of 44.1 seconds in placing second to Evans at the 1968 Olympic Trials at Echo Summit, California, when Evans' winning time of 44.0 was disallowed by the IAAF because he wore illegal brush spike shoes. James was a double gold medalist at the 1970 World University Games, winning the 400 m hurdles and running the anchor leg on Team USA's 4x400 m relay team (3:03.33). As a collegian at Villanova University under Hall of Fame coach Jumbo Elliott, James won the NCAA 440 yd (400 m) title in 1970 and NCAA indoor crowns at that distance in 1968, 1969 and 1970. At the 1968 Penn Relays, his anchor leg of 43.9 was the fastest ever run in the history of the relay carnival and sparked Villanova's scintillating comeback victory over Rice University.
