As it is written, 1 Cor. xiii. 8, ' Whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophecy in part; but when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.' Since a knowledge of spiritual things, then, is dependent on the Spirit of the Lord Jesus, an explanation in regard to spiritual things rather follows than precedes a knowledge of the gospel. And it may be sufficient here for our purpose to remark, that as the Scriptures inform us that man is a created being, that this implies that his spirit is a created spirit. And that as man's life is necessarily in his spirit, that the spirit which he seeth in the open vision, and in which he seeth the images of all visible things, is not the holy uncreate spirit, but the created spirit which God breathed into man when he created him a living soul.Now, although God is the Creator of, and Rulerover all things, yet as he hath given unto all things to have those things which characterise them in themselves, so is it also with the created spirit, it hath those things which characterise it in itself.
