5-0 out of 5 stars Enthralling
My mother and I listened to this on a long road trip (found the CD at the library). I'm a huge fan of the movie, so I didn't know how I would like it, but O'Karma's performance is spot-on and amazing. We were sorry whenever we had to stop the car and couldn't wait to keep driving because it was that good. I didn't know how close the movie was to the book--very close--the book adds a lot of detail to my picture. Will probably actually read the print version sometime in the future. ... Read more

Product Description
Daphne du Maurier's celebrated biography of her father, Gerald du Maurier, last of the great actor-managers.

Sir Gerald du Maurier was the preeminent actor-manager of his day, knighted in 1922 for his services to the theater. Published within six months of her father's death, Daphne du Maurier's frank portrait was considered shocking by many of his admirers—but it was a huge success, winning her critical acclaim and launching her career. Here, du Maurier captures the spirit and charm of the charismatic actor who played the original Captain Hook, amusingly recounting his eccentricities, his humor, as well as his darker side. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars MODERN GOTHIC MURDER MYSTERY
Although the story begins slowly, (due to Du Maurier's painstakingly descriptive writing style), it nevertheless vividly sets the dark and gloomy atmosphere that pervades Manderly, the ancestral home of the hero, Max de Winter who is tormented by a dark secret.

This is an excellent novel for those students of early 20th century British society and mores, and for those who like a good "who done it".

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless... ghosts and romance
This has always been one of my favorite books. My "old" copy has pages falling out I have read it so many times.
I'm sure for many people today it will seem "dated" and "mild"... but at the time it was written it was amazing... and to me timeless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Seven Pillars of Wisdom: A Triumph
Excellent writing by T.E. Lawrence, aka Lawrence of arabia.Plethora of detail and a wicked insight to the intricacies of Arab politics, tribal fiefdoms, and the complexities of a little know aspect of WW I, i.e. the British attempt to arouse the Arabs against Turkey, to take some of the pressure off the Brits vs Germany.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I read this book years ago when I was in high school.I loved reading it again.I looked for years for a hardcover copy and could never find one.I finally thought to look at Amazon and sure enough there it was.I bought a used hardcover copy and it was in great shape and the price was very reasonable.

I love that Amazon always has what I'm looking for.

4-0 out of 5 stars An old book of great mysteries.
A friend lent me this book.I couldn't put it down the first night I got it.Most of the stories are great, one or two were ok, not even good.I would recommend this book for anyone over forty, for me it brought fond memories of life of the late forties and early fifties.I know that most of you in your forties were not born until 1960 or later, but if you were like me most of the TV movies when we were kids were from that era.I especially like the Perry Mason story, Perry's discription in the book is very different from the TV Perry Mason. For now this is a book I look forward to re-reading on a long cold winter's night with a large cup of hot chocolate in front of a warm fire. ... 'This book of occasional pieces from Daphne du Maurier's workshop is good to have: it is something of a continuation of her autobiography MYSELF WHEN YOUNG. The title piece is the remarkable Notebook she kept when REBECCA was forming itself in her mind -- the book that made her a worldwide bestseller and conquered both stage and films and ...television. The other pieces are mainly autobiographical but have no less variety than charm. Her devoted readers will not be disappointed' SPECTATOR ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Scrappy collection of unpublished writings
A somewhat scrappy collection of unpublished writings of Daphne du Maurier including her original plot outline for her most famous novel. One gets the impression it was put together to capitalise on her fans insatiable desire for more writing from a very successful but reclusive author.

3-0 out of 5 stars Up close and personal with Daphne du Maurier... and Rebecca
Having recently devoured most of her novels and short stories, and having read a fictional account about her, I've decided to read one of Daphne du Maurier's autobiographies.I was not able to obtain a copy of Myself When Young, her first memoir, but I did manage to obtain a library copy of The Rebecca Notebook and Other Memories.

This wonderful book contains notes, musings and rough drafts of Rebecca when the novel was still a work-in-progress.Du Maurier also recalls aspects of her first years of marriage and her first impressions of her home estate called Menabilly. She also gives insights into her mind as she focuses on her work.Rebecca is very much loved among readers, and having this account of how its creator comes about writing it while going through some personal growth herself is fascinating. The book, while insightful, doesn't compare to her novels though.(Hence the three stars.)It is also quite short.I was able to finish rather quickly.Still, this is a good thing to read if you're a fan of this author.I have read about Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and others, and wanted to read about this author -- from her own pen at that!I very much look forward to reading either Myself When Young or The Du Mauriers. There is also The Daphne du Maurier Companion and other biographies that talk about her supposed extramarital affairs and rumored bisexuality, which Ms. Du Maurier remarks upon by way of her "male alter ego" Richard Young in The House on the Strand. Those books all seem interesting, but in the meantime get this at the library if available. ... Product Description
Prior to the publication of this biography, the elusive Anthony Bacon was merely glimpsed in the shadow of his famous younger brother, Francis. A fascinating historical figure, Anthony Bacon was a contemporary of the brilliant band of gallants who clustered round the court of Elizabeth I, and he was closely connected with the Queen's favourite, the Earl of Essex. He also worked as an agent for Sir Francis Walsingham, the Queen's spymaster, living in France where he became acquainted with Henri IV and the famous essayist Michel de Montaigne. It was in France that du Maurier discovered a secret that, if disclosed during Bacon's lifetime, could have put an end to his political career ...Du Maurier did much to shed light on matters that had long puzzled historians, and, as well as a consummate exercise in research, this biography is also a strange and fascinating tale. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another classic and example of this writing genius
I have always held the higest respect for writers; to me, it seems impossible to create characters out of the air, imbue them with distinct personalities and weave a story linking all of them, remembering to keep the characters with their own personalities. Ms. Du Maurier succeeds at this and goes way beyond by writing such disparate and fascinating stories. The Apple Tree relates a man's unhappiness with his long suffering wife who has a martyr complex and sees her in an old apple tree he comes to despise; The Little Photographer is a rather depressing but engrossing tale of a spoiled and beautiful woman with a very lavish lifestyle who becomes bored on holiday with the children and the governess, and has a fling she is ashamed of, with a photographer in the town she hired to take photos of her family.
To her, it is a casual thing, to be forgotten once she returns home and just an embarrassing footnote to her vacation, to alleviate her ennui. However, to the photographer, it is a life changing event. So much so he threatens her safe and luxurious existence and becomes a very real threat to her way of life.
The best of all the stories and one which has haunted me for years, is Monte Verita, a Shangri La, in some remote mountain pass, one which draws young people and they are never seen again. One of these bewitched people is a woman much loved by 2 men, one her husband and the other his best friend. Neither can give her up, and they unite in their quest to get her back.
Great collection, wonderful stuff, you will love it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lackluster Endings
I'm not much of a short story fan but, having read almost all of Du Maurier's other works, "The Rendezvous & Other Stories" became more of a necessary reading than a chosen one. DdM clearly writes well, and consistently well at that. But each of these 14 short stories lacked a wallop. The set-up for a "zinger" conclusion was built into each story, with an ending that didn't make itself evident until not just the final paragraph, but even the final sentence. I guess, then, that that was the problem -- 14 excellent stories that led to a potential "wow' ending that fizzled instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best short story collections I've ever read!
Daphne du Maurier wrote various short stories over the course of her life, many of which could be found here. The Rendezvous and Other Stories contains several of her best work. Why settle for her novels when you can catch glimpses of her brilliance in shorter stories?

"Leading Lady" and "The Rendezvous" were written during her youth. These stories showcase flawed, selfish and oftentimes unlikable characters that seem true to life and remind me a great deal of Julius and Mary Anne."Angels and Archangels" has a similar theme, only it isn't as engaging as the previous two.Du Maurier also displays her keen eye for dry, ironic humor, a style that always accompanied her writing but was more conspicuous in her last novels. The aforementioned humor could be found in "Adieu Sagesse."The storyline in that one, while somewhat contrived, uses the author's understated love for humor. There are also her signature dark and disturbing tales, like "No Motive."That one is quite mind-blogging."The Closing Door," my favorite, is also very dark, displaying the cruel and manipulative side of the human mind."Split Second," "Panic," and "Indiscretion" are also quite brilliant. I'd already read "La Sainte-Vierge" and "Escort" in another du Maurier collection called Don't Look Now, but I enjoyed them more the second time around. And last, "Fairy Tale" and "The Supreme Artist" are not the best here, but by no means bad either.

All in all, this is one of the best short fiction books out there.Daphne du Maurier displays her versatile talents in this unique and literary collection.I got this in the mail yesterday, and I couldn't resist reading the stories. My one disappointment is that "The Pools," a ghost story, is not included in this book, and I don't like the idea of buying a short fiction compilation just to read that one story. The story "Don't Look Now" is also notably absent. If you're a fan of Ms. Du Maurier and enjoy short fiction, then by all means do not, I repeat, DO NOT miss this one.Read them; savor them as though they were rich chocolate.I should've taken my time with this book.I WANT MORE!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful stories
For all mature readers who expect not romantic mush but strongly personal views of life.
Du Maurier's disturbing short stories are among the best I've read in English.

3-0 out of 5 stars Better du Maurier Short Story Collections Out There
This is a collection of eight short stories by Daphne du Maurier. I'd only recommend it to someone who really enjoys her writing and wants to read all of her work. Otherwise, a much better collection of short stories is Kiss Me Again, Stranger (also called The Apple Tree or The Birds - her short story collections tend to have a few different names).

Of the 8 stories, Blue Lenses is a great psychological/sci-fi tale. The Alibi and The Archduchess are worth reading. The rest are fairly forgettable.

2-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could give this more, but I can't
If I had only been able to drag myself to the very end... but I still would have given it only 2 stars. I read about halfway through and finally decided that this book must be in Greek.

The one story that did something for me and earns this book its two-star status was the second one about the blue glasses. A young woman had surgery on her eyes and when they took the bandages off they installed blue glasses in her eyes so as to adjust to light before putting the clear ones in. But something went wrong, either with the surgery or the glasses, because she sees everyone with an animal head that defines their character. She is very relieved when her clear glasses get put in to see that everyone has a normal person's head again... but I won't take away the surprise ending. Get this book for this story's sake and you won't be sorry. Get it for a whole volume of good short stories and you will be sorry. Which is too bad. ... Read more
