Product Description
Including photographs and collages by the author himself, a series of stories written by "beat-generation" author Fielding Dawson. Continued in his typical "stream-of-consciousness" style, The Trick is a wonderfully interesting read that appeals to fans of Kerouac and Ginsberg.

The first line of the first story, "The Trick," relevant as the title of the collection reads: "The Trick to being intuitive is to catch the hunch, grab onto that little feeling, bring it up into consciousness and do what it says." ... Read more

Dawson's mysognious brattle is as unimaginative a blue urinal cakes. He lacks the humanity & humility of a solid writer, choosing instead to wander aimlessly & listlessly through tired topics and long-deadthemes. Bury this book & buy something else. ... Read more

Product Description
When John Chamberlain began his career in the late 1950s, his starting point was Abstract Expressionist painting. As has since been remarked, his twisted, laquered, partially painted, metal sculptures eventually created a new, three-dimensional Abstract Expressionism. This collection of his two-dimensional works from different creative phases brings him back to that starting point and suggests other directions he might have taken--and quietly did take, in sketching--reinforcing both the pictoral character of his work and his unconventional way with materials. Papier Paradisio includes subtle improvised works on paper, small reliefs made in cardboard and metal, spray paintings and Formica. ... Read more

Product Description
The Orange in the Orange, a novella and two stories by Fielding Dawson draws on his experiences as a prison teacher. In the novella, The Orange in the Orange, Dawson peels away at himself, in the hero-teacher character, with zeal and more deeply than he has before. Sure, the setting, in prison, where he teaches writing, kind of forces the issue. A prison building is a spectacle for all of us outside, but inside everything is detail. Detail requires alertness, and in prison there are penalties for lack of alertness. The teacher of prisoners is a spectacle until he or she proves otherwise.

According to Mr. Robert Bové in his review of The Orange in the Orange, This book goes way against the grain of the entertainment culture, of industrial-strength spectacle... In The Orange in the Orange, the mind is working overtime, but the reader who works along with writer gets paid time-and-a-half. Reading Dawson, one is never ashamed of having idled away one's time on literary bon-bons. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dawson's New Social Focus Writing
Starting with "Virginia Dare," and "Will She Understand," Fielding Dawson has moved away from the first-person(al) autobiographical prose he became famous for towards what he calls his"social-focus writing." In those collections, and now finallywith "The Orange in the Orange," he has relied on his experiencesas an instructor in prison-writing programs to create a new emergingfiction; one not only from personal experience (and no longer using thefirst-person narrator) but from listening to others. Dawson sees this as anexpansion of his art, extending beyond himself, out to other people andtheir stories. The newest entry in this expansion is "The Dirty BlueCar," (Wake Up Heavy, 1999), a knock-out story that fluidly merges hispast and present styles.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Mish-mash.
THE LAND OF MILK AND HONEY is subtitled (cleverly I might add): "A Big Little Book." It's pocket-sized but packed with Dawson's usual whallop! This book of stories is a mixed-bag filled with Dawson's prison workshop experiences, and odd character pieces that harken back to his projectivist period. A nice blend of old and new. A personal favorite of mine is "Lone Cowbo," I've read almost all of Dawson's work and have never seen anything like this from him before. Pick this ... up and enjoy the vitality of this American icon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dawson Delivers with The Dirty Blue Car

The minute I opened The Dirty Blue Car, I liked the feel and size of the smallish (7' x 4.5") book. After reading the stories, I discovered I enjoyed the stories as much as the book itself. The cover and book design have a rare quality; they're fun.Fielding Dawson not only wrote the stories but also created the collages in the book.
Before Dawson died at the age of 72 on January 5, 2002, he had published 23 books. He taught writing in prisons and worked with at-risk teenagers in high schools.Several of his stories involve prisoners and teenagers, providing readers with an intimate
glimpse of his experiences teaching writing workshops. These stories provide writers and teachers with motivating, inspirational writing ideas.
If a person were to flip through this book, one would quickly notice that the stories are filled with dialogue. This technique works well with his stories because Dawson is a master of capturing honest conversation. Readers will feel like they're listening to the stories more than reading them.
Dawson's love for art emerges throughout his writing. Not only does he want his readers to hear his characters, he wants us to see his stories:
Body the color of a peeled pear.
Blue is the color that most frequently is seen as a symbol for things of the spirit and the intellect.
On a blue morning under a red sky, a black coupe' headed west, fast along U.S. 202.
In the scent of the earth that is late spring, over in the side yard, with its red, yellow and white rose beds ringed by violets, perpendicular to the small bed of Jerusalem artichokes (not to bloom til August)....

Throughout these stories, Dawson remains energized, caring about his characters, never letting them fade; but, they will linger in the reader's mind, the way good stories should remain with us.
