The book breaks new ground by distilling and presenting new and newly-reinterpreted evidence for the Hellenistic era, by opening the debate on how we should replace Rostovezeff's classic view of this period, and by offering a compelling new set of interpretive ideas to the debate on the ancient economy. ... Product Description
The release of the 1.3 version of the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) represents the evolution of Sun Microsystems' server-side development platform into a more mature and sophisticated specification. Servlets 2.3 gain events and filtering; JavaServer Pages (JSP) 1.2 gain a new XML syntax and enhancements to the custom tag mechanisms; and Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) 2.0 has some significant changes to its container-managed persistence model, as well as support for asynchronous processing with the new message-driven beans.

This book demonstrates how to design and construct secure and scalable n-tier J2EE applications, using JSP and servlets for the web tier and EJBs for the business logic. It also covers J2EE Connector Architecture that allows you to easily integrate your J2EE applications to enterprise information systems.

This book covers:

  • The J2EE container architecture and runtime services
  • Web component development with Servlets 2.3 and JavaServer Pages 1.2
  • Business logic components with EJB 2.0, including container-managed persistence, EJB QL, and message-driven beans
  • Underlying J2EE technologies for distributed development - RMI, JDBC and JNDI
  • Introduction to Web Services covering SOAP, SwA, WSDL, and UDDI
    Amazon.com Review
Aimed at the working developer or IT manager tackling server-side and Web-based enterprise Java applications, Professional Java Server Programming J2EE 1.3 Edition offers a truly excellent guide to the fast-changing world of today's Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) APIs and programming techniques. Filled with the practical details and advice for using real Java tools in actual projects, this book offers one of the best available resources to the current state of the Java used on the enterprise.

If anything, the new edition of this title (without the massive hard-cover format of its predecessor) gains in being streamlined. Although some readers might quibble with the ordering of topics here (it's hard to see why JNDI and RMI begin the tour of J2EE), the range of topics and coverage offers a superior mix of APIs without getting bogged down in excessive detail. Better yet, the authors are careful to distinguish between different flavors of specific APIs on such topics as JDBC (they cover features of versions 1.0 through 3.0 separately), new servlet and custom tag library standards, and EJB 2.0 standards. J2EE is several years old and its APIs have grown by leaps and bounds. The authors are careful to cover the older material while highlighting what's new and improved. At each juncture, they do a fine job of listing relevant APIs, making this book an excellent reference for everyday programming.

It's an old saw that the genius is in the details, but perhaps never more so than with J2EE, where finicky application servers can waste countless hours of your time. This volume will increase your productivity with its exacting presentation of Web and EJB deployment (using freeware Java deployment tools) and the league-leading BEA WebLogic Server 6.x, which is used here for deploying components. Working Java developers will also appreciate the full tour of deployment descriptor options for servlets and EJBs.

Other excellent material looks at the ways of designing truly scalable and maintainable enterprise systems with Java mixing JSPs, servlets, and EJBs. This guide to "best practices" includes a useful discussion of software patterns (like the front controller pattern) illustrated with real code. Coverage of custom tag libraries, plus the evolving JSP Standard Tag Library (JSPTL) from Sun and Apache, will help you master this very important emerging technology.

With its extensive coverage of today's rich and complex J2EE platform, and practical focus on real-world design and deployment, the new edition of this book succeeds as an almost indispensable resource for any enterprise Java developer. It will serve as both a reference and tutorial to the latest in high-end Java for your next large-scale project. --Richard Dragan ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy from the "Bargain Price" listing.
This product listing does not allow normal sellers to list their item here. Thus, the prices for this book are higher than they should be, because a few preferred sellers are able to monopolize the listing. If you want to buy this book, click on the "other offers" link below the usual "used & new link".Normal sellers are selling the same book for a lot cheaper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still The Best Around
Although it's several years out of print, I haven't found a better introduction to J2EE textbook and thus, am still using it in my classes.Think it's not worth it? ... better buy one fast because the price of the used ones is going up instead of down.

Another remarkable feature of the book is that the original code still runs fine on Tomcat 5.

Multi-author? yes, but since one of them is Rod Johnson, it also has historical relevance. No, I'm not associated with Interface21.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dated but worthwhile if you can pick it up cheap
I got mine for $5.99 at a "Building #19" store in MA. Although it's quite dated (J2EE 1.3 - EJB 2.0, JSP 1.2 and Servlet 2.3) there's not been too many changes to J2EE 1.4 (1.5 though is a whole different matter with annotations and the "back-to-POJOs" approach). I'd still pick up a copy if you can get it cheap and before J2EE 1.5 goes mainstream.

This is overall a good book. The earlier version of the same book was better because it had more diagrams, more examples, more chapters, etc. This book lacks the meat contained in the previous version, including fewer pages and smaller font size. Don't know why these enlightened authors have taken this step... So, think twice before you buy this book...

2-0 out of 5 stars Glaring factual errors in 'hygiene' section
The book is very informative(so far) as a basic ingredient review, but there are glaring errors on page 114-115 (paperback version)in the section entitled 'kitchen hygiene'. While cooking food to the correct temperatures to prevent foodborne illnesses is certainly important, cooking roasts to 290 F; burgers to 320 F and poultry to 360 F, will yield a totally inedible and revolting product. Likewise, reheating leftovers to 330 F will not aid in economical use of leftovers. (The correct temperatures should be approximately 140F, 160F, 180F and 160 F, respectively). Should you need exact numbers or a specific reference, almost any other cookbook will have data on proper cooking temperatires, as will your local health department.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great source of information
Despite the comments about the recipes (none of which I have tried), I liked the book - especially the organization of it, the way the foods are listed with their important vitamin/mineral/etc.I think it is a very good book to have for any mother or father, as a source of reference, even if the recipes aren't used b/c at least you know what food is providing your child with what nutrient.I checked it out at the library, read it and wanted it immediately. My mother saw it on my coffee table, read it and also wanted it just for herself.

1-0 out of 5 stars Faults with this book
The concept of this book was good.but the recipes are poorly written, sometimes with steps apparently left out.Even if the recipes are followed as written, the final product does not come out properly. In addition, my kids would not eatany of the recipes I made from this book.(Although my husband & I liked some of them). If you are looking for a children's cookbook I would look elsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars pass on this one
Interesting book to read but recipes are complicated, time consuming and if that's not enough the 3 we tested tasted horrible.Food for little fingers is a much better book for both toddlers and youngsters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Boost your child's brain power!
With over 150 delicious recipes, you will want to try some of these recipes for yourself. Kids and adults alike will enjoy recipes for Berry Delight drinks or chicken patties in a soft tortilla. There are appealing and quick alternatives to fast food and non-nutritious snacks.

The authors Michael van Straten and Barbara Griggs have experience in the area of nutrition. Michael van Straten is a well-known medicine practitioner in the UK and is a practicing naturopath and nutritional consultant. Barbara Griggs has been studying and writing about complementary medicine for the past 25 years and is the health editor of Country Living magazine.

In this collection, you will find weekly menu plans for every stage of childhood, from conception to the teenage years. An interesting link between diet and allergies, behavioral problems and eating disorders is also helpful for parents dealing with these complex issues.

Nutritious food is now possible with Superfoods for Children. Delicious nourishing dishes can be made for your child to encourage healthy eating habits. There is a comprehensive guide to 130 top ingredients that form the building blocks of healthy eating for children. Vegetables, fruits, dairy products, grains, nuts and seeds, meats, fish, herbs and oils are then used in delicious recipes.

They do say that butter is better than margarine...ok, they get 5 stars just for that comment! I also appreciated the extra section on "Danger Foods." These are foods which used to be occasional treats but have now become part of our children's everyday eating. The authors explain why these foods are not healthy and in detail! I guess some of the items they discuss are not good for adults either.

Some recipes serve 4-6, while others serve 1 or 2. If you are at home cooking for your children, you will not have to make another meal for yourself. Overall, a very well organized book with some wonderful information for special food problems. With so much hyperactivity and children who find it hard to concentrate, parents might find their children become calmer after cooking for them at home and following nutritional guidelines. Studies were conducted which showed dramatic improvements in behavior within a week of being on a monitored diet.

In this classic account of the Western esoteric path of initiation, Steiner leads the student from the cultivation of reverence and inner tranquility to the development of inner life through the stages of preparation, illumination, and initiation.

Rudolf Steiner describes practical exercises of inner and outer observation and moral development. By patiently and persistently following these, new organs of soul and spirit begin to form, revealing the contours of higher worlds that had been concealed from us.

Steiner becomes our teacher, counselor, and friend, with advice that is practical, clear, and powerful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Instructions for the Neophyte
This is a written mentorship for anyone who wants and needs help stepping into the hidden worlds of spirit. Penned explicitly for publication by Rudolf Steiner - in contrast to the countless editions of shorthand transcriptions of his many oral lectures - this book gives specific instruction to anyone who wants to develop perception of spirit.

The presentation of instruction for how to experience and understand the worlds of spirit, and the conditions for developing the organs of perception for doing so, Steiner lays out simply and directly. The book serves as both a manual for development, and a vehicle itself for that development. So, I read a short passage in the book as part of my regular meditations.

Steiner wrote these essays at the beginning of the 20th century, in German. The translation itself is also not contemporary. In addition to the subject matter itself, then, the rendering of Steiner's words present a challenge to the reader. I encourage patience here. There are other translations and editions of this book, and it might help to have another version handy for reference for especially puzzling passages. But a book on knowing higher worlds is bound to be puzzling, even after accounting for translation and passage of time.

One last consideration: Steiner mentions that these are preliminary teachings, based on much more complex matters that he deliberately avoids. This isn't the whole story, then, but an excellent place to begin. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb view of history
This is a little-known but superb view of the history of China. Written by an insider, it has wonderful detail and insight. This book was essentially buried in the US by McCarthyism and rabid, unreasoning anti-Communism. This was unfortunate, but we are fortunate that we live in a country where even banned books don't necessarily get burnt. A highly recommended read for anyone wanting to better understand China.

5-0 out of 5 stars History written in beautiful English
I was referred to this book by an American Artist whom had lived in Japan for almost 50 years. As a Chinese, I thought I know Chinese history, but after reading through JD's detail account of events with vivid description of the personalities, I can visualize the historical moments through the paper. It is so well written that I have to read very slowly to digest it.Combining this with other readings during the same period, including Ray Huang's lesser known Yellow River Blue Mountain (his autobiography), I am beginning to see history in perspective!

5-0 out of 5 stars First person report of a fascinating period in history
While I had previously read Seagrave's Soong Dynasty and Tuchman's Stilwell, it was the bibliographical notes of Ambassador Lilley's China Hands that got me turned on to this book.I ordered it from an Amazon seller and I wasn't disappointed.

Mr. Davies offers vivid, evocative descriptions of events and people he encountered in China from his birth in Sichuan in 1908 until the Communist takeover in 1949.Apparently a religious record keeper, Davies is able to rely on his contemporaneous diary entries and letters to produce colorful details that would have been impossible to to recall 30 or 40 years after the fact.Davies does an exceptional job of mixing macroscopic historical events with his own microscopic personal narrative to create a flowing portrait of early 20th century China.

Though very much loyal member of Stilwell's China detail, Davies offers even-handed analysis of the events that eventually led to the fall of the Nationalist regime in China.Instead of putting the blame for the "loss" of China on any individual, Davies seems to point at the prevalence of sentimentalism over China in the minds of American foreign policy actors as leading to the mishandling of China during the 1940s.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in China, Asian studies, or WWII history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Martyr For A Sane Foreign Policy
John Davies has crafted a superb tale of his years in Asia and Moscow. He was a classic Old China Hand, raised by missionary parents in China, a fluent speaker of the language, and a natural to serve in the State Department and as Army liaison during World War II.The book combines period documents with later reflections, dazzling readers with thrilling adventures and portentous encounters with the era's major figures: Generalissimo and Madame Chiang, Stilwell, Mao, Zhou Enlai, Roosevelt, Marshall. The 1948-9 Nationalist debacle sparked an anticommunist hunt for scapegoats blamed for "losing" China (it was never ours to lose), tragically depriving the US of wise counsel from Davies, John Service, Oliver Clubb, John Vincent and others. As J.K. Fairbank noted, neither before nor since has America had such gifted country experts to advise on foreign policy.Davies's view of a defense-minded Soviet Union again was more realistic than the official line which helped provoke the Cold War.His globetrotting is a little hard to follow, and fuller coverage of post-1945 events would be welcome, but these are quibbles.See L. Van Slyke ed, "The China White Paper."E. Sevareid, "Not so Wild a Dream" augments Davies's modest paragraph on their celebrated parachute jump and escape from Burma.E.J. Kahn, "The China Hands" details wartime conflicts and postwar persecutions, while J.S. Service, "Lost Chance in China" contains prophetic field reports by Davies's most astute colleague.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent 'first person review of chinese history.

    Product Description

Despite its explosive growth over the last decade, the Web remains essentially a tool to allow humans to access information. Semantic Web technologies like RDF, OWL and other W3C standards aim to extend the Web’s capability through increased availability of machine-processable information.

Davies, Grobelnik and Mladenic have grouped contributions from renowned researchers into four parts: technology; integration aspects of knowledge management; knowledge discovery and human language technologies; and case studies. Together, they offer a concise vision of semantic knowledge management, ranging from knowledge acquisition to ontology management to knowledge integration, and their applications in domains such as telecommunications, social networks and legal information processing.

This book is an excellent combination of fundamental research, tools and applications in Semantic Web technologies. It serves the fundamental interests of researchers and developers in this field in both academia and industry who need to track Web technology developments and to understand their business implications.

    Product Description
Written by two leading Old Testament scholars and widely used throughout the world, Davies and Rogerson’s The Old Testament World describes the historical, social, and cultural setting in which the Old Testament was written and examines the major genres of literature that it contains. Ideally suited for college-level introductory classes, it illuminates the literature of the Old Testament by showing how it was shaped by the events, social structures, and religious and intellectual ideas of the ancient civilizations and cultures in which it was produced.

Unlike most introductions, it goes beyond traditional formats and reflects the vast and significant changes that our understanding of the Old Testament has undergone in recent decades. Rather than using a conventional canonical-theological approach, the book presents the Old Testament as a monumental cultural achievement. Now thoroughly revised and updated to reflect the many developments of recent years, it is arranged according to major topics for study, followed by sections that introduce the major divisions of the text. It is illustrated with pictures, maps, and charts. ... Read more

    Product Description
Surface Analytical Techniques for Probing Biomaterial Processes describes four surface analytical techniques for probing dynamic, in situ processes at the biomaterial interface. The book presents the theoretical basis and biomaterial applications of:oTotal Internal Reflection Fluorescence Spectroscopy (TIRFS)oSurface Plasmon Resonance (SPR)oEllipsometryoDynamic Contact Angle (DCA) analysisThis book is not a review, but a practical description of the techniques to enable the biomaterialist to assess and intelligently use any one of the methods described. It deliberately avoids addressing expensive or non-dynamic tests, and concentrates instead on the growing field of biomaterials. Theory is presented in a simple and readable manner, experimental procedures are described, and the type of information obtained is discussed. It is written not just for the avid or interested reader but also, and perhaps more important, for the end user. ... Read more
