Product Description
This description is based on the MIT professor's writings on linguistics in the 1950s; but beginning with his criticism of the Vietnam War in the 1960s, Chomsky became much better known for his radical politics than for his theories of language. Over the past forty years he has gained a devoted following in the United States and Europe for his increasingly bitter--some say hysterical--censure of U.S. "crimes." Chomsky has complained about being ignored by mainstream publications such as the "New York Times," but in fact his steady stream of polemical works, like the best-selling "9-11," have made him the center of a veritable cult.

In "The Anti-Chomsky Reader," editors Peter Collier and David Horowitz have assembled a set of essays that analyze Chomsky's intellectual career and the evolution of his anti-Americanism. The essays in this provocative book focus on subjects such as Chomsky's bizarre involvement with Holocaust revisionism, his apologies for Khmer Rouge tyrant Pol Pot, and his claim that America's policies in Latin America in the 1980s were comparable to Nazism. Scholar Paul Bogdanor writes about Chomsky's hatred of Israel. Ronald Radosh and David Horowitz discuss his gloating reaction to the September 11 attack. Linguists Paul Postal and Robert Levine reevaluate Chomsky's linguistics and find the same qualities there that others see in his politics: "a deep contempt for the truth, descents into incoherence, and verbal abuse of those who disagree with him."

"The Anti-Chomsky Reader" presents a fascinating composite portrait of a man who arguably is our most influential public intellectual. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars a negative personal attack ad in book format.
A series of vague and clearly motivated by something not mentioned in the book.Horowitz is insane.

1-0 out of 5 stars Huh?
The book is quite unusual. At first I didn't think it real. It is designed for people who do not read or know Chomsky. Just plain infantile slander, criminal really. The authors misrepresent the most basic aspects of his career. And what is an "anti-reader?" It is silly as the book is lunacy.

1-0 out of 5 stars pot calls kettle.........
What I find interesting here is the use of linguistic subterfuge in accusing Chomsky of linguistic subterfuge. If one chooses to read beyond the smoke and mirrors here one will be disappointed to find little else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Illogical, misleading, childish
This book is a childish attempt to discredit Chomsky's work by mischaracterizing him, name-callling, and knocking down straw men. The author is illogical, ignorant, and dishonest. I'll be honest -- I've only read a few chapters of this book. The first thing I saw when I flipped open the book at the library was a section called "Chomsky and the Jews". I immediately knew what type of crap I was in for -- your basic "not accepting Israeli government policy" <---> "hating Jews" argument. Then he went on to rip apart some arguments that Chomsky hadn't made, and used that as proof to show how irrational Chomsky is.

Complete trash ... just some ignorant scumbag piggy-backing on Chomsky's notability to sell his poorly written book.

Don't waste your money or time on this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chomsky or rather "Chumpsky?"
Chomsky (Chumpsky) is a linguist who worked as a college professor but thinks he has omniscient insight regarding the inner workings of the U. S. government and privy to the hidden motivations of government officials in our nation somehow. There is no way he could.

But somehow, Noam Chumpsky is one of the most quoted figures in the humanities. He has published tracts deconstructing U. S. foreign policy and never has given any indication that these insinuations may somehow be limited by having few or no connections or any real first hand evidence.Since the 60s, he has fully played the role ofa wizard and built an entire library's worth of garbage.

Finally, we are fortunate to have The Anti-Chumpsky Reader, and it offers readers the service of deconstructing the hypocrite and the deconstructor.Chumpsky's lies become so pervasive and counter-intuitive in this book that it is amazing that anyone but paranoids ever read him in anytime.

This book is a group of essays that outline and refute the shams that the "linguist" has passed off for truth.Considerable space is given to his publications in linguistics also.In his chosen field, many have praised him, but this book does not. His linguistic ideas may be as absurd as his political ones. Most all sources give him first-hand credit for his academic assumption about a "biological basis in grammar," but it seems that he engaged in little scientifically verifiable work during the last fifty years.Chumpsky's creative terminology impresses admirers, but his theories inevitably amount to nothing.

Overall, anti-Americanism is the center of his worldview.Chumpsky never sees America as being superior to any other.Chumpsky's hopes for mankind are invested in murderous revolutionaries and not in the nation of his birth. It is America, and never the Khmer Rouge, which gives its citizens the freedom to vote, the freedom to trade and the freedom to spread the type of traitor-propaganda that Noam Chumpsky has been disseminating for almost 40 years.

He does not just write about Asia, however; the traitor constantly minimizes the acts of numerous totalitarian states.Chumpsky considered Soviet control of eastern Europe as being "practically a paradise."

After 9/11, Chumpsky was even more concerned about a fictitious famine in Afghanistan than about the nearly 3,000 who died in the World Trade Center.Chumpsky predicted that thetoppling of the Taliban would bring about 3 to 4 million famine deaths. When this famine failed to occur, Chumpsky did not issue an apology or retraction; he simply decided to say nothing.

Nothing about this world infamous ideologue is genuine.Chumpsky has defended the right of free speech for anti-Semitic, Holocaust-denying cranks, but he chose not to say anything, or sign any petitions, supporting Soviet intellectuals sent to the gulag for their ideas.

His political orientation is preposterous.Chumpsky is enthralled with the socialist ideal but considers himself a libertarian. If this were at all true Chumpsky would be the first libertarian who hated capitalism and the free market. He also claims to be a some kind of anarchist but seems to love strong governments that redistribute the wealth of its citizens and force its people into complying with his socialist ideal.Chumpsky is so deeply repulsed by our nation that he believes Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Truman are war criminals, but he thinks that Pol Pot as having created "constructive achievements for much of his population."Chumpsky has easy answers for anyone who dares argue with him.We Americans do not understand because we have a false consciousness. Only he, the superior one, can know the true workings of the American state.

Stylistically, Chumpsky litters his work with footnotes yet these footnotes become a con-game in that they often lead to even more footnotes citing other "claims" he made in earlier works.

What dare one say about Chumpsky? As a pseudo-scholar and shaper of youth, he is deplorable.Chumpsky's country has made him prosperous and famous, although he sees no good in the bounty and prosperity surrounding him.His is a most disturbed, envious, and depressed mind.Chumpsky has tied his life's failures to officials in Washington. If this linguist would be content to hate himself rather than project his attitudes upon the government, we would certainly be much better off.

Product Description

In all of his travels Captain Jean-Luc Picard has never faced an opponent more powerful that Q, a being from another continuum that Picard encountered on his very first mission as Captain of the Starship Enterprise™. In the years since, Q has returned again and again to harass Picard and his crew. Sometimes dangerous, sometimes merely obnoxious, Q has always been mysterious and seemingly all-powerful.

But this time, when Q appears, he comes to Picard for help. Apparently another member of the Q continuum has tapped into an awesome power source that makes this being more powerful than the combined might of the entire Q continuum. This renegade Q is named Trelane -- also known as the Squire of Gothos, who Captain Kirk and his crew first encountered over one hundred years ago. Q explains that, armed with this incredible power, Trelane has become unspeakably dangerous.

Now Picard must get involved in an awesome struggle between super beings. And this time the stakes are not just Picard's ship, or the galaxy, or even the universe -- this time the stakes are all of creation... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Gripping but ridiculous and unsatisfying
The premise is worthwhile and the climax is a real page-turner because it is jammed full of excitement as three universes converge in chaos. That said, the author attempts to do the impossible by trying to explain ultimate realities and ultimate chaos. A genius might be able to do that in a convincing, engaging way. What you get here is mostly gibberish and left me feeling unsatisfied when it was all over. There have been episodes of Trek that have dealt with some of these sublime ideas and they turned out quite good (Yesterday's Enterprise for instance, or All Good Things...), but this is not very good at all. All the stuff about the Chaos at the heart of the universe remains essentially gibberish, as intriguing as the concept is, and the author even resorts to writing stream-of-consciousness nonsense at one point to try to convey it. Impossible-to-comprehend events happen to virtually omnipotent beings and universes collide -- this is exciting! -- but David's attempt to convey this in human writing fails badly. This ends up being glorified fan fiction.

I give it a 3, though, because -- as deplorable as the writing is at times -- the crazy stuff that happens is entertaining enough, so long as you are only looking for a cheap thrill that will quickly be forgotten by you and the rest of the reading world. I don't regret reading it, and I devoured the climax in one sitting, turning the pages furiously, but that doesn't change the fact that it's not a good work of fiction and doesn't leave you feeling satisfied when it's over the way a great novel, or even a great episode of Trek, does.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Heart of the Storm" unleashed!
"Q-Squared" is another great Peter David offering that goes above and beyond your average "Star Trek" novel. You can never go wrong with Q, a member of the Q Continuum, a race of godlike beings with omnipotent powers who are nevertheless very annoying. David goes even further and adds parallel universes, a good helping of chaos theory, and Trelane, a bratty child Q who is tired of being told what to do. Apparently, even the all-mighty Continuum can seriously screw up, because some omnipotent genius has put Q in charge of Trelane. Oh, at first it's amusing (Picard even laughs in Q's face) but then Trelane makes Winnie-the-Pooh come to life in the Enterprise school and things rapidly deteriorate.

"Worf looked up from his station and said, 'Captain . . . security reports that they are under assault by . . .' He paused in confusion. '. . . a plush yellow bear.'"

Petulant and upset at being subsequently thrown off the ship, Trelane builds a machine that will allow him to tap into the chaos that holds together the multiverse. The result, of course, is pure anarchy. The story had also been following two other plots in two different Star Trek timelines, including one in which Captain Jack Crusher is still alive and divorced from Beverly (after Wesley's death), who has just entered into a secret relationship with First Office Commander Picard. As the three universes collide together and all hell breaks loose, Jack Crusher's ensuing insanity effectively mirrors the chaos that lurks within all systems, from chemical reactions to planetary weather to ecological population growth and fluid dynamics, to molecular vibrations and plate tectonics, to economics, the multiverse, and the human heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hype about this book.... is totally deserved!!!!!!!!!
As I am writing this there has been 87 reviews and a remarkable 68 of those reviews are 5 stars. Now it is officially 69 5 stars reviews!!!

This book was excellent.Peter David knows the Star Trek universe better than any other writer of Star Trek.He has 3 different story lines going at once. However he keeps them all seperate, as long as you pay attention you will have no problem keeping them all straight.Universe "B" is the universe that we all know.I would say somewhere right before the conclusion to TNG TV series.Universe "A" seems to be about the same time frame but is very very different. No reason to go over all the differences. If you've read it and just want to see what other people think then you know the differences. If you haven't read the book the fun in reading it is to find out about this universe and seeing the differences.I willtell you that Jack Crusher is Captain of the Enterprise with Jean Luc Picard being his #1.Plus Picard and Beverly, not to mention Riker and Troi's relationships are very different. The 3rd universe is set from the episode of "Yesterdays Enterprise" were the Federation is at war with the klingons.

There is an old enemy that is back.Peter David writes in Trelene from the TOS "Squire of Gothos" as a member of the Q, and it is Q's job to be his guardian.Of course that doesn't go according to plan.Trelene wants to combine all 3 universes and after he gets the upper hand on Q and sends him away it is up to Captain Picard and the rest of the crew or crews of the Enterprises to stop him.

This is easily the best Star Trek book that I have read.A must for any Next Generation fan.

Next for me I am staying with the whole idea of an alternate universe.I am going back to the "Shatnerverse".Avenger is next for me.

Grade: A+

4-0 out of 5 stars Trelane returns!
Greetings and felectations! It's wonderful to see Trelane back again. The paralles between the Q and Trelane are uncanny. David has done a wonedrful job of bringing together two Trek generations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty much strictly for Trek nerds
But you knew that already, right? It follows three different alternative timelines. One is the "normal" one, one is an alternative where Jack Crusher is alive, and Picard is his first officer on the Enterprise, and one is the alternate from "Yesterday's Enterprise," in a losing war with the Klingon Empire.Along comes Trelane, of an original-series episode, to mess things up.Turns out that Trelane is a young Q, and Q himself is his guardian, trying (with very limited success) to guide Trelane to adult Q-hood.Trelane becomes petulant (as he was with Kirk), and all hell breaks loose as he crashes the timelines together and sends Q into near-oblivion.Sorting it all out is a fun ride, but this is definitely a book I feel no need to keep after reading it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the film.
After reading this book, i was pushed to re-watch the film. I gained much more insight through the novel.

3-0 out of 5 stars Super Reader
As I have seen Peter David mention in writing online, the problem with doing novelisations is that if the source material is very stinky, then there isn't too much you can do about it.

While this story isn't as bad as one of the Swamp Thing movies, it isn't too flash, either, descending more towards some of the later Batman movies than the earlier examples of those, or Spider-Man itself.

Throwing in multiple villains gives not much time to any of them, particularly when large chunks of this story are taken up with overly mawkish and extended scenes with angsty drama queens (literally), and well-meaning aunts, making the third Spider-Man book somewhat duller than the others, and certainly not as interesting as some of the novels David has managed.

It certainly doesn't help from the start when, let alone having a prologue, it is several pages, all in italics!Recipe for making my eyes glaze over, that.

Some of the book is nifty - the Sandman origin scene, and the bit with Curt Connors are more interesting in the prose version.

On the whole though, this is basically ordinary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiderman Rules
I'm a newbie Spiderman fan, but I can honestly say that ever since I saw the first Spiderman movie I've been hooked. The sequal actually topped the first one which suprised me and kept me rooting for a third film. After seeing the movie at the cinema I was going nuts trying to find different ways to wait for the movie to come out on DVD. I then remembered that every major motion picture usually has a novel attached to it. Happily I found Spiderman 3: the novel based off the movie. This had to be one of the best finds on Amazon I'd come across, I couldn't put the book down (it was very hard to tear away from it for class). I read it in a matter of weeks but kept going back to read over the chapters, needless to say the book held my interest and still holds it. I think I'll give it another read after I'm done reading my English homework.

PS: I recommend this to any Spidy fan who liked the film, although even if you didn't like the movie perhaps the book would be satisfying enough to your Spidersenses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for Spidey fans
Pick this book up if you were dissapointed with the movie or if you liked the movie the book explains soo much more and it gives you a way better understanding of what's going on with everyone... you also get a little bit more of venom if your a venom fan, and there's a lot more to the symbiote and the black suit spidey, get this book you will not be dissapointed!

4-0 out of 5 stars Best one yet
Great adventure story which should make for another good movie. As for comic book continuity, it is missing the mark on a couple of points, but ALL the comic movies seem to be doing the same.Doesn't detract from a good storyline or action packed movie. ... Read more

"With concise instructions and explanatory diagrams, the author explores new techniques for plain weave, twill and block weaves. The three-end block weave is fully described, especially the application of it to shaft-switching. The samples illustrated have been specially woven for the book and photographed by David Cripps, who is renowned for his work in the craft field.

Rug Weaving Techniques will inspire as much as it informs and will be indispensable to any weaver's library. The book includes 71 colour plates of his rug samples and 139 clear black-and-white diagrams." This book is an absolute must for any rug weaver!

Twenty-two years after his famous "Techniqes of Rug Weaving", Collingwood produced a worthy sequel in this 1990 book, full of new ideas.Close-up photos of small samples, large detailed diagrams, andclearly-written text convey Collingwood's enthusiasm for his craft and leadthe weaver through the methods needed to achieve some truly stunningeffects, useful not just for rug weavers but for anyone interested inunusual handweaving methods. (Another book to seek is "SmallWebs", a Danish (?) book for users of small table looms who want tocreate things no machine could produce.) The author's suggestions foraltering and strengthening a loom struck me as sensible, especially sincethe loom I use was handmade by a musician friend from parts that werealmost entirely "found objects" -- it includes bean poles and apost from a fallen street sign.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent support for Petrine supremacy
This book, along with Stephen Ray's "Upon this Rock" are probably two of the best most clearly written treatises showing that from the very beginning Christ established a Church, and founded it upon Peter. The fact that so many protestant scholars are now acknowledging that indeed the early Church was in fact heirarchical with Peter as its' head demonstrates the strength of these arguments. It is unfortunate that while making this acknowledgment that many of them fall into intellectual dishonesty by arguing that that Petrine authority only lasted for a generation and died with Peter. However, I digress, I found that this works' biblical, theological and historical facts overwhelming.Clearly, one could argue that as a Catholic the authors were "preaching to the choir".I think though that I read this in a dispassionate manner, and whenever and wherever possible tried to look at the works cited by the authors. In the end I suppose persons will have to come to their own conclusions through prayer.I will conclude by suggesting that the prayer Christ offered on his last night on earth for Christological union among his disciples to be equivalent to the unity that Christ shared with the Father can in no way be stated to be achieved with 30,000 plus denominations preaching different Gospels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Guess what? The early church was Catholic...
Protestants must know this book exists. Are they ignoring it? Why aren't they Catholic yet? The evidence for the Papacy in this book is ridiculously overwhelming. I don't know how any one with an ounce of intellectual honesty can even begin to try to refute this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars So what did Jesus mean by giving Peter the keys?
There is only one way to understand what Jesus meant when he gave Peter the keys. That is to study the textual meaning as it would have been understood then, the historical circumstances, and the evidence that remains of what the early church and early church fathers took it to mean. What other way is there is grasp the true meaning?

This book is an excellent handbook for anyone studying the subject, and it goes into the subject in great depth.Indeed, it's indispensable for any student of the meaning of Peter and the keys.

Although this book leans heavily to the Catholic interpretation, there is no evidence that the author slanted his writing. He merely presents the evidence.

In Aramaic, the words would have been: "Thous art kepha, and upon this kepha" (p 18).Furthermore, "all archaeological, philological and historical evidence all point to the naming of Simon as 'Peter' by Jesus as the first instance of the use of 'rock' as a man's name" (p 27)."Peter is the Vicar (Prime Minister) of Christ on earth, the one who opens and shuts, bind and looses" (p 53) the gates of heaven.

The most interesting part of the book is the section on the church fathers and their comments. The section starts out with the obvious comments from1 Clement circa 95 AD, and pointing to clear apostolic succession.

Surely the clearest and best comment is from Irenaeus about180 AD when he wrote: "'That tradition derived from the apostles, of the very great, the very ancient, and universally known Church founded and organized at Rome by the two most glorious apostles, Peter and Paul...For it is a matter of necessity that every Church should agree with this Church, on account of its preeminent authority, that is, the faithful everywhere, inasmuch as the apostolical tradition has been preserved continuously by those faith men who exist everywhere"

The arguments are clear, and the conclusion impossible to ignore.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Catholic answer to Josh McDowell's "Evidence that Demands a Verdict"
In "Jesus, Peter & the Keys" Butler, Dahlgren, Hess fall back on some techniques familiar to children of The Baltimore Catechism and Josh McDowell's popular apologetic resource guides of "Evidence that Demands a Verdict" effectively combining both for the diligent student, but boring the crap out of an ordinary reader. I'm glad I worked through it, but after a while the question-answer-explanation tridium structure made me weary.

Nevertheless, for Bible-believing protestants, this is the "Catholic Evidence That Demand a Verdict" so necessary for coming home. No honest textual critic of the Bible can read this book without having their views challenged and the question of the divine appointment and necessity of the Papacy answered in the strongest possible terms. Which of course leads to the necessity of a salvific choice if one is to remain true the protestant ethos of the sacred nature of conscience and faith.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling scritpure and history
The case for Petrine-papal authority in the church is compelling to the open mind. In this well-organized work, the authors point out scriptural allusions (old and new testament) to the role of Peter and his successors having primacy in the church. What is more, the early and apostolic fathers are shown to have accepted that teaching from the start. To claim that the doctrine was a corruption of the true faith is to believe the teaching infiltrated the church at or even before the last Apostle's funeral. The case is indeed compelling from scripture alone but added to it is the weight of church history. As John Newman commented, "To be deep in history is to cease to be Protestant." ... Read more

The name Ellis Peters in the title of the book was clearly meant to lure readers.None of the writers are up to her standards. There is no shame in not being a master but it left me feeling a little cheated. There were a couple of stories that I kinda liked but the rest were forgettable except two were downright yucky. And the tributes to Ellis Peters written by each and every author were so uninteresting that I didn't bother to read any of them through.

The biggest sign of how unimpressed I am with this book -- I am going to give it away which I never ever do, but I feel kinda guilty that I am going to inflict this lame book on some poor soldier in Iraq.I shall have to include better reading material and some snack food in the box. ... Read more

This will not appeal to anyone above the age of 16. First the artwork. Definitely an attempt to create a juvenile version of Spiderman to appeal to the manga market segment.

The plot here is quite awful. Spiderman has to wrestle a villain known as Muerto, and later against El Dorado. Both villains are dressed and act like outcasts from WWF. Then they revive Uncle Ben Parker who gets jealous when he discovers Aunt May dating Jarvis the Avengers butler. Oh brudder...

Product Description

Salmela Architect provides an in-depth look at one of America's leading "critical regionalist" architects.Salmela's buildings resolve a central question of our time: how to balance the various extreme positions that characterize contemporary architecture and culture.Salmela accomplishes this by juxtaposing opposites: modernist and traditional forms, open and cellular plans, large and small scales, familiar elements used in unfamiliar ways. His projects range from a small stand-alone sauna to commercial spaces visited by thousands of people, and his buildings, mostly situated in the upper Midwest, have become nationally and internationally known. Salmela Architect showcases twenty-six completed buildings and sixteen current projects in lavish color photographs and architectural drawings, enabling readers to get a full sense of the practicality, ethnicity, and playfulness apparent in David Salmela's work.Architecture critic Thomas Fisher explores Salmela's propensity to draw from regional roots as he creates designs particular to individual places and cultures yet with universal appeal.Fisher illuminates this synchronicity with projects as prominent as the Gooseberry Falls Visitors Center and Wild Rice Restaurant as well as residential projects including the acclaimed Jackson Meadow community and photographer Jim Brandenburg's Ravenwood Studio.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of extraordinary work
This is a handsome book, well organized and full of excellent photographs and clear, readable plan and elevation drawings. It is a wonderful addition to the library of anyone interested in thoughtful and articulate architecture.Salmela's work is beautiful and rich, and this book does it justice.I'm very glad to have this in my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular photography and architecture!
This book is a lyrical tribute to the work of Minnesota architect David Salmela. The text is knowledgeable and engaging (Fisher is dean of the U of M's College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture), and the large format photographs are beautiful and vivid, inviting the viewer to "walk right in." Highly recommended for anyone interested in architecture, interior design or photography!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Important Voice in American Architecture
I was introduced to Salmela's work through some friends living in Minnesota. One wintry weekend we toured his Jackson Meadow subdivision, taking our time to examine nearly every property: the specific architecture of each structure, the landscaping, and the feel of the development as a whole. Our feelings were substantially complex, ranging from awe and intrigue to doubt and disturbance. But Salmela's signature on the land was definitely singular, and we all agreed that in some way, his work had blended with the natural world.

This book is a great primer for entering Salmela's world. The photography is clean and expansive and the chosen sites are almost all spectacular. In particular, the coverage of Jim Brandenburg's home is noteworthy.Salmela's work on Brandenburg's property is spectacular and resonant with Falling Waters in my humble opinion.

If you are a Midwesterner interested in architecture, buy this book and enjoy. ... Read more

Product Description
This book offers a concise and accessible introduction to "1 Peter" aimed at undergraduate students.Like other volumes in the "New Testament Guides" series, "1 Peter" offers a concise and accessible introduction to a New Testament text, in this case aimed specifically at undergraduate-level students. It provides information on the likely historical and social setting of this letter, on its literary form and theological content, and on issues involved in its interpretation. It gives a balanced presentation and assessment of the range of scholarly views on such topics, with guidance for further reading and research. In particular, this volume suggests that "1 Peter" is an important text not least for the ways in which it both reflects and constructs early Christian identity, in its relationships with Judaism and the Roman Empire. Although "1 Peter" remains neglected compared with the canonical gospels and the major Pauline letters, Horrell argues that the letter deserves much more attention for the pivotal contribution it makes to the development of early Christianity and for the ways in which it reveals this development in progress. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The first volume in the DC run of the series
I discovered Fallen Angel in somewhat backwards fashion, not that there is anything wrong with that.I was poking around in my local comic book store, saw FALLEN ANGEL REBORN, featuring Illyria from ANGEL as a guest character.I instantly bought it, loved it, and wanted to know more.In the same store I saw FALLEN ANGEL OMNIBUS, which collected the first 21 episodes of the comic with IDW after David's comic was cancelled by DC.I loved that one, so I have now gone back to the DC collections. The plan is to finish the volumes in the DC run, and then read the volumes that come after the IDW OMNIBUS.After that, all I can do is hope that FALLEN ANGEL REBORN won't be the end of things.I suspect it won't be.

I found these stories somewhat surprising given what I read in later issues. For one thing, I was interested to discover that Lee's supernatural origins are not clearly spelled out.I mean, clearly she has supernatural abilities, but she her heavenly origins are only vaguely hinted at.I like that, however.I like that she starts off as a mystery and only gradually discloses her secrets.

I also enjoyed the stories in these first issues. They are restricted much more to Bete Noire than many of the stories in later episodes. But all in all they definitely make me want to continue with the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent step forward for comics
Lee, the "Fallen Angel" of the title, represents an evolution in comic book characters, and in female characters as well. She brings a toughness not seen in almost any comic character, male or female, and comes off as real, flaws and all.

Peter David's "Fallen Angel" collects the first six issues of this excellent monthly series. The collection introduces you to the strange world of Bete' Noire, complete with many interesting characters and settings. There are several stories in this collection, but they all flow together to create the sense that you are visiting a real place, and a strange and interesting one at that.

Fallen Angel features drug dealers and cancer-stricken youth. It features likeable characters who may be monsters underneath, and monsters who may hide compassion and caring hearts. It features themes for the smart and mature reader, and situations and language to match. This is not for your six-year old, and not just because of swear words. Fallen Angel requires you to be able to understand concepts like loss, hatred, anger, and viciousness, and all of these from the supposed hero of the title.

Lee is not your typical comic heroine. She could kill you as soon as help you; she could torture you half to the edge of death rather than just ask for your help. You sympathize with her, because clearly she has suffered. But you would not hesitate to turn her in to the authorities if she crossed your path, because she will scare you.

Buy this collection. If you want to see how comics have progressed, or if you want to read a good story. This is far beyond the funny books of old, and it is more mature than the sadistic "mature readers" comics of recent days. It may be mature, but only because it has grown up. It is not mature for the cache of an "R" rating. It is mature because that is how the story goes. Lee's story is real, and it must be told, no matter how gritty the details.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Love It!
This collects the first issues of DC Comic's Fallen Angel, written by Peter David. This series is a joy to read and I'm so glad that they collected the first six issues here. Wether your a long time Peter David fan, a comic book fan, or just love a good story you can't go wrong with Fallen Angel.

4-0 out of 5 stars A refreshingly dark and different take on heroism.
In the humid, shadow-drenched city of Bete Noire, nothing is quite as it seems. By day, the city's so peaceful that it doesn't need a police force. By night... well, that's a whole different story.

If you're lost, or desperate, or just need help, you might just find yourself in Bete Noire in a bar called Furor's, sitting in a booth in the back, waiting for Lee, the hooded woman otherwise known as the Fallen Angel. If you tell your story well enough, and if she feels like it, maybe she'll agree to use her extraordinary abilities on your behalf.

But beware: you may not get the kind of help you were looking for.

Blending the seedy energy of '30s pulp novels, the creeping surrealism of David Lynch, and just a pinch of that good ol' superhero flavor, Peter David's "The Fallen Angel" is a comic series like few others. Prepare to have your expectations turned upside down: the heroine is a nihilistic jerk, frankly, while the criminals she matches wits with are frequently smart, brave, charming-- even compassionate. Do Lee's often alarming means of righting wrongs justify her more or less noble ends? That's just one of the uncomfortable questions David poses to readers in the course of her adventures.

Artists David Lopez and Fernando Blanco create a convincingly creepy atmosphere for Bete Noire, backing up David's enigmatic writing (and selling his occasionally punny jokes as well.) Though this is most definitely not for kids-- just wait until David starts bringing up the queasy connection between superhero violence and sexual excitement!-- it's an outstanding, challenging read, and one of the best ongoing series on the market.

4-0 out of 5 stars Walking in grey areas
This isn't your typical DC Comics book, and it isn't even a typical Peter David book. David, known for his many years as a writer for comic and SF franchises like the Hulk, Star Trek, Supergirl, and others gives us a much darker and personal story in these pages.
Though those familiar with David's past work may wonder if the yet to be revealed past of the Fallen Angel of the title has any shared history with his previous titles, the greater point of the book are the grey areas we all live in.
The main character inhabits a gritty, almost noirish reality of gangsters and mystical threats in a strange and fictional city that is well illustrated and brought to life by some stunning art by David Lopez, whose realistic and fluid art perfectly compliments Peter David's story.
It should be noted that the graphic novel, a collection of the DC comics series of the same name, is intended for mature readers and contains some language and depictions of violence, however, both writer and artist keep these factors within the bounds needed to tell the story and never become salacious in their use.
A well executed and criminally under read piece of graphic storytelling. It stradles the line between noir and horror and should have a wide range of appeal to those who like a cracking good story. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of Foreclosure purchasing
I had run across my first pre-forclosure deal and needed to get a basic understanding of the steps and processes.Peter and David's book provided that wonderfully.I was able to use the steps and scripts to sign up a deal, provide help to a stressed-out seller and reach the proper department at the lender. The suggestions of how to talk to both the seller and the lender have been very helpful with dealing with the human side of things.I felt very comfortable with the style and the seller has been very appreciative.I didn't feel manipulative at all.

An official Library Weekly book review.

REVIEW:
This book generically highlights a few ideas on how to invest in
foreclosures and how to finance it without using cash or credit.
Part of the formula is the use of "double closings" which allows
you to simply invest with a minimal amount and use the sell price
as the payment during the title closing. The difficult aspect of
this is it doesn't truly describe certain foreclosure techniques
available in each state (generically applied).Additionally,
you may need to read this with a grain of salt with the current
real estate market conditions.

Looks at David Smiths sculptural workAmazon.com Review
After David Smith's untimely death in 1965, row upon row of extraordinary abstract sculptures were discovered in the grassy fields that surround the artist's home and studio at Bolton Landing in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. Fittingly, many of these works were subsequently acquired by Storm King Art Center, the world's quintessential sculpture park, which is set on 500 acres of rolling lawns, fields, and woodlands and surrounded by the undulating profiles of the Hudson Highlands. Smith's sculpture fields there provide the inspiration for this book, published to coincide with a three-year exhibition (1997 to 1999) of the works at Storm King. The human form in landscape, or "the artist in the world," is a consistent visual theme for this grouping of Smith's monumental planar and volumetric assemblages of geometric shapes and seamlessly transformed found objects. In Portrait of a Painter (1954), for instance, Smith created a figural silhouette in which flat bronze rectangles form a spinal column and pelvis, crescent-shaped arches delineate the curves of a body, and an actual cast palette serves as a head.

This large, colorful book is chock-a-block with images and information, collaged in the lyrical spirit of David Smith's diverse works. In her introductory essay, daughter Candida N. Smith recalls a magical childhood in the creative oasis of what the artist called his "sculpture farm," and writes eloquently of his art as an extension of his identity. A memoir by prominent art critic and historian Irving Sandler describes Smith's circle (which included Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline), his deeply modernist roots, and his interest in cubism, constructivism, and surrealism. Throughout the book are quotes by many of Smith's artist friends, including Helen Frankenthaler ("A ribald and beautiful human being, with a roar of laughter"); Kenneth Noland ("When he did something, he did it absolutely. He meant for it to stand up to anything: nature, aesthetics, anything"); Anthony Caro ("He made his life around sculpture and I think he taught me that"); and Mark di Suvero, ("[He] had the animal energy of an industrial worker, the capacity, the craftsmanship and the will of an original artist, and he drank his booze ... in a way that made me shudder.... He was a master"). --A.C. Smith ... Read more

This is a softcover edition of the Fields of David Smith.High quality all the way around.A beautiful book with bountiful photos and great essays. The artist' daughter had much insight into the book.Highly recomended as a purchase by anyone who loves David Smith or great sculpture in general.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Sculpture of David Smith
When David Smith died in 1966 he left his own personal field of dreams at his home/studio in upstate New York. Over 80 gigantic sculptures populated the grounds, pitting man against nature and daring to compete in size and moxie with the mountains around them.

After an initial flirtation withNew York City, Smith retreated to the solitude of the Adirondacks. Thesemountains formed a somber monumental backdrop to the brooding nature of theartist. The sculptures were the landscape of his imagination, his spiritualdomain, and his homage to the majesty of being human. Additionally, Smithcreated drawings, paintings and collages that filled his home with theliving presence of art.

This is a lavish book that clearly reflects theartist's magnificent obsessions. ... Read more

Product Description
More than 100 black-and-white images of a working-class neighborhood in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in the 1970s grace the pages of this photo-essay produced by acclaimed photographers David and Peter Turnley. These hauntingly beautiful, raw and real photographs documenting life on McClellan Street were taken by the Turnley twins with a single camera as a high-school project. Although the brothers did not grow up on McClellan Street, their photographs represent a very personal, sincere, direct, and loving interaction with life on a street in the heartland of America. Many of the McClellan Street residents had migrated from Appalachia and some were of Hispanic origin. In a neighborhood that many might have ignored, the young Turnleys saw beauty, diversity, and wonderment. With a maturity beyond their years, they captured the life of this community for future generations.

Published with the generous support of the Fort Wayne Museum of Art and the Institute for Advanced Study at Indiana University.

From Steve Raymer, author of Images of a Journey: India in Diaspora
-- "The Turnleys' images are anything but outdated. Indeed, their pictures are warm, intimate, and evocative. The pictures invite the reader to walk the streets and enter homes with an immediacy and emotional connection that is in the highest traditions of documentary photography. . . . I marvel that high school students could have taken them!" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars McCellan Street: A Story of a Neighborthood
McCellan Street is a photo essay of the people who lived in this working class neighborhood in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Fortunately, two high school students, David and Peter Turnley, captured the life and vitality of the people of McCellan Street before it before it fell victim to one of the city's urban renewal projects. Following this project in the early 1970s, the Turnley brothers would go on to become two of the most respected photojournalists in their profession.Their black and white photographsare powerful. Each photograph tells a story.Everytime I look at the photographs in McClellan Street,I see something new. People familiar with the Turnleys will recognize the themes of hope and optomism that appear in much of their work. This book should be required reading for all serious students of photography.

4-0 out of 5 stars The root of the tree
See where it all began.Get a look at this street through the eyes of two very young men who would become world class photo journalist.Beautiful, amusing and interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Memorable Photographic Essay From The Brothers Turnley in Their Youth
Inspired by some of our great street photographers in the 1960s, especially by Bruce Davidson's classic work, the Turnley brothers chose to turn their photographic lenses on their neighbors in their Midwestern town when they were in their late teens. "McClellan Street" was such an impressive body of work, that it quickly caught the attention of Magnum Photo photographers. Since then both brothers have become renowned documentary and studio photographers, covering everything from the Olympics to riots in Europe and Asia. But here, in their first photo essay - now the subject of a superbly printed book - David and Peter Turnley demonstrate not only a fine eye for detail but ample compassion for their subjects, in the best tradition of a W. Eugene Smith (Incidentally, an exhibition of this work is currently on display at New York City's Leica Gallery. It was there a few weeks ago, that I had the pleasure of meeting both photographers and have them autograph my copy of their book.). Through their lenses and film, the brothers Turnley have depicted the inhabitants of McClellan Street not only with ample compassion, but a superb sense of dignity too, with photographic skills that were truly far more advanced than their then youthful years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational/Beautiful! Thanks for using your natural giftedness!
I was lucky enough to get to hear Peter speak last night at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. During my high school years, I was so excited about photography. I chose to not follow through with studies in Photojournalism; and at times I can't help but think back and ponder "what if... ." Last night was one of those evenings... . Hearing about the life of the two brothers was not only an informative, but a highly motivational experience. The focus and inginuity the two possessed during their high school years was intense; and this book is testament to that fact. Not only is the technical aspect of the printing intensely beautiful, but the design aspects of the images in terms of perspective and framing are absolutely incredible. Attention to aspects of subject choice, composition, and mood are a reflection of what they must have felt in their hearts and minds. The chance to hear about their friends, school, and societal aspects helped create a real cohesiveness when viewing the images at the FWMoA. Happiness, moroseness, uncertainty, and contemplation describe some of the moods in the environment. It is quite obvious that the members of the McClellan neighborhood looked at these boys as familiar and welcome fixtures, rather than intruders. Thank you to the Turnleys and the members of the neighborhood for an exciting visual journal.

As an Art teacher, I think it would be fantastic for high school students interested in photography to take a loook at this collection. Purchase this one for your budding photographer! ... Read more
