5-0 out of 5 stars Two of Crichton's Best!!
These are two of Micheal Crichton's best novels. I loved both of them and read the whole thing in about a week.As far as novels go...these two are about as good as it gets

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have If You Like the Films
Michael Crichton's popular Jurassic Park novels that spawned two blockbuster motion pictures are together, uncut and unabridged, in this spectacular book. If you liked either one of the Steven Spielberg films, this is definitely a must-have, both as companion for the films and for its literary value.

I am part of the iconoclastic ilk who believe a film can be better than the book. Michael Crichton's "Jurassic Park" is an example. And that is not knocking Michael by any means. The novel - written three years before the film version - is packed with far more scientific facts, fascinating theories, and interesting techno-babble than the motion picture ever could. Reading "Jurassic Park" is almost like a crash course in paleontology and DNA. However, that aspect of the book giveth and taketh away. Too often it gets bogged down in a superfluity of sometimes boring scientific jargon. The last 15% of the book is slow-going, and the ending is anticlimactic. But there are plenty of adventure/suspense elements and compelling characters (most of which appear in the film) that made this so attractive for motion picture studios.Crichton has a keen ability to delineate vivid images of the dinosaurs. He also has a knack for writing amusing dialogue. The computer screen illustrations lend much-needed visual aid, and it is fun to watch the fractals of Ian Malcolm's "Chaos Theory" grow from chapter to chapter. The pros (and prose) of this book far outweigh the cons.

Now, all those literary purests should be pacified.I think "The Lost World" is far superior to the film (of course, it is almost impossible for it not to be). This is one of those rare books that I actually have trouble putting down before I finish - spent thirteen hours straight reading it. If you can get through an oppressive section early on, the rest of the book is fast-paced and compelling. The plot of the novel is far more credible than the film, and is spared that ridiculous scene in which tyrannosaurus rex wreaks havoc in San Diego. Interestingly, there are fewer characters in the book than in the film. Jack Thorne almost seems like a reverse composite character.A lot of the dialogue in "The Lost World" is comic book caliber, and Crichton occasionally digresses into the tedious scientific lectures prevalent in "Jurassic Park", but not nearly to the same extent.Overall, the "Jurassic World" book is a fine read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great read!
I have read both Jurassic Park and The Lost World seperately before, however I found that the combination of the two was brilliant! Sure the book was poorly constructed with rough un-cut paper, but at least it stayed together. Jurassic World is a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Great Books In One Volume
This omnibus has two of the greatest novels of all-time in one volume: Jurassic Park, and the Lost World. But of course you already knew that. If you want to know my opinions on the individual books then look up myreviews for them, but I can tell you that these are two awesome books andeach so much better than the (by no means bad) movies. And they're in onevolume! If you don't yet own these two books, this is the best way topurchase them, as it is cheaper. On the other hand, if you already own orhave read these two novels there is absolutely no reason to purchase thisone, as it has nothing new except for slightly different packaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars ¡Un libro increíble!

This is one great book. This book has some great characters, storylines, and is indeed very intense. The characters are dynamic and the storyline is ever-changing. The sequel to Jurassic Park, The Lost World answers many questions. If you have a few spare moments a day, you'll make it at least half an hour of spare time a day. You WILL READ THIS BOOK! It's that good.

Product Description

5-0 out of 5 stars UNA AVENTURA INTERESANTE...
This is the Spanish text edition of an absolute page turner of a book. It opens with one of the most absorbing first chapters I have ever read. An elderly man is found wandering in the desert, speaking in rhyme. There is something not quite right about him. The hospital to which he is taken discovers that the anomalies do not end with just his speech. Something is very wrong with him.

Highly inventive and compelling, the reader is reeled in hook, line, and sinker, right from the get go. A wholly plot driven book, make no mistake about it, the story revolves around a highly secretive, technological corporation, ITC, headed up by a megalomaniacal, young genius, who is tooling around with quantum physics in a way that has never before been done. Our genius is spearheading a project that is truly cutting edge. Of course, he is not doing this for the betterment of mankind. He is doing it simply because it will ultimately result in mega bucks for him, if all goes according to plan. Alas, the best-laid plans often go awry.

Cut to a group of dedicated historians who are involved in an archaeological dig, located along the Dordogne River in France. Their project, the ultimate restoration of a fourteenth century, feudal town, is very generously funded by ITC. Now why would a technological giant such as ITC be funding such a project?

This is the basic premise of the book. The use of quantum physics is applied in such a way as to access the past. Here, a group of historians find themselves with the chance of a lifetime. They can actually enter fourteenth century, feudal France and experience it themselves. There is quite an adventure in store for them.

Their reason for doing so, however, is not research. They are actually on a mission to rescue their chief historian who had ventured into fourteenth century, feudal France, using ITC's technological application of quantum physics. Due to an unfortunate set of circumstances, however, he found himself mired in the fourteenth century and unable to return to the present, as originally planned.

What happens to these intrepid historians will captivate the reader. Well written and thoroughly researched, those who, like me, love science fiction, as well as historical fiction, will, most likely, enjoy this book. As a devotee of medieval history, I was entranced by the historical detail contained within the novel. I also found the book somewhat reminiscent of the sci-fi television series called "Sliders", in which the concept of quantum physics is utilized in order to slide into parallel universes.

All in all, this well-written novel makes for riveting, escapist entertainment. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found that I simply could not put it down!

5-0 out of 5 stars MUY BUENA LECTURA...

4-0 out of 5 stars Book-good condition, would check other site for price on same
The book came in timely manner and in new condition.

The problem is that I paid 20.00 and the re-seller left the receipt from another website for 6.00. ( both $ are without shipping )
Would have been way more professional if the receipt had been removed from under front cover from the true vendor- that's all. Would have spared the hard feelings.

I strongly advise that other sites are checked before using Amazon private sellers.I just hate feeling taken advantage of and yes, I did it to myself...

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Excellent Novels
This omnibus contains two excellent and controversial masterpieces of suspense. Rising Sun is a great crime mystery and also shines light on the business tactics of the Japanese, albeit with a bit of paranoia. This mayseem ironic now, since the Japanese economy is NOT what it used to be, but it is an interesting footnote and a very good novel nonetheless. In his next book, 1994's Disclosure, Crichton continues his habit of writing about issues of the day. It is the famous and controversial story of a man who gets sexuallyharrassed by a woman -- his best book in my opinion. Get thisexcellent collection if you haven't already read these two works.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
Admittedly I have only read Rising Sun and not Disclosure but one was enough. My wallet is eternally grateful that Rising Sun was so bad I have never been tempted to buy another Micheal Crichton novel. I found the book very hard to read and in fact I gave up half way through and just read the last few pages, something that I never normally do. I hate to say it but for once Hollywood made a movie that was better than the original book. I almost liked the movie. I thought that my ineptitude with foreign languages was the problem but when I lent it to a friend to translate the phrases for me, he said that he couldn't and they must be a dialect of some description. He is now working in Japan and speaks the language fluently. I lent the book to another friend and I don't care if he never returns it. You may think I being harsh but then if you liked the book you can merely write me off as that one in a million wierdo.

3-0 out of 5 stars Half excellence, half mediocrity
_Rising Sun_ is an amazing tale of intrigue, politics, and murder. It tells of Japanese and American socio-economic practices, and how they (in this case) fatally interact. Reading this book, I was entranced and enthralled. The pages seemed to turn themselves! This is a must read book, one that exercises your mind, as well as your adrenaline._Disclosure_, on the other hand, was a disappointment, especially after reading _Rising Sun_.A mediocre story of "reverse" sexual harassment, I remained uninterested and almost bored throughout much of the story. The weak setting, poor character development, and sub-Chrichton quality plot all combined to make this novel a chore to read.Though _Disclosure_ is weak and disappointing, _Rising Sun_ is a sure-fire winner. One of the better novels by Chrichton that I have read, I would recommend it to anyone (though some of the more graphic sex and violence scenes may be inappropriate for younger audiences). However, given the weakness of _Disclosure_, I would recommend investing in a copy of _Rising Sun_, and skipping _Disclosure_ altogether.

3-0 out of 5 stars They're All Out to Get You
Michael Crichton's paranoia-driven novels play on the scare-of-the-day headlines that keep us all looking over our shoulders.Disclosure panders to the worst fears of innocent victims of ... harassment accusations. The trouble is, things like that do happen, so you can't resist reading to see how Crichton's characters handle these muddy situations. The characters themselves are flat and not memorable, but I find I have to find out how Crichton will deal with such politically delicate topics.

Rising Sun is a bit dated now that Japan is no longer the economic force it once was.Still, it wasn't long ago that Japanese interests seemed on the verge of buying up Hawaii and the West Coast and it could happen again. At least, that is what you'll think as you read Rising Sun.I started the book on a flight from San Francisco to San Diego.Midway through the flight, I looked around the plane and realized I couldn't understand any of the conversations or read the titles of the books and magazines my fellow passengers were reading. The flight was filled with Japanese tourists and businessmen.I could feel Michael Crichton's paranoia. ... In the Nevada desert, an experiment has gone horribly wrong. A cloud of nanoparticles — micro-robots
— has escaped from the laboratory. This cloud is self-sustaining and self-reproducing. It is intelligent and learns from experience. For all practical purposes, it is alive. Every attempt to destroy it has failed, and we
are the prey. Michael Crichton's most compelling novel yet tells the story of a mechanical plague and the desperate efforts of a handful of scientists to stop it.
Drawing on up-to-the-minute scientific fact, Prey takes us into the emerging realms of nanotechnology and
artificial distributed intelligence — in a story of breathtaking suspense. Prey is a novel you can't put down. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A CAUTIONARY TALE...
This is the Spanish text edition of "Prey", another fast-paced, bio-tech thriller by this author. Expertly weaving his narrative, the author grips the reader with his tale of nanotechnology gone wrong. While the book is wholly plot driven, with little attention paid to any character development, this lack does not unduly detract from the enjoyment of the book, as the plot is so gripping.

The plot revolves around stay at home dad, Jack Forman, who was a whistle-blower about some high-tech espionage going on in the company for which he worked. Unfortunately, he revealed what he had discovered it to the wrong person and, consequently, was fired for his pains. While at home, he notices that his wife, who is a mover and a shaker for a bio-tech firm, has been acting a little odd and suspects her of an illicit affair.

When her company wants to hire him to check out some programming problems at their Nevada facility, Jack jumps at the opportunity. He then discovers that the firm has engaged in an experiment that has gone out of control. A swarm of nanoparticles, designed as micro-robots and programmed to act as one mind, has escaped from the environs of the firm's desert laboratory. Programmed to be predatory, the swarm is deadly and evolving into something even more sinister with every passing moment.

Moreover, he notices that it isn't only his wife that is acting a little odd. Others at the facility with the swarm problem are also acting a little strange. All is definitely not what it seems. The only question is whether Jack, with the help of the scientists at the facility, can take control of the swarm before the swarm overwhelms and controls them.

This book keeps the reader riveted, despite the fairly predictable, formulaic plot. It is a highly enjoyable book, as are so many other of the author's books. It also presents some serious ethical and moral issues for consideration by the reader, and the author himself gives a fairly detailed, cautionary foreword on the dangers of nanotechnology.

5-0 out of 5 stars best techno thriller to date
Mike does it again. Even more suspensful than timeline, and more thought provoking than the andromena strain, Prey scares the reader with a combination of biology, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence manipulating humans. ... Read more
