From AudioFileIn the fourth book of Cooper's Dark is Rising series, Will Stanton travels to Wales to recover from hepatitis. Here he learns more of his legacy as an Old One; meets Bran Davies, whose life in intertwined with his; and recovers the last talisman for the struggle against the Dark. Susan Cooper is a consummate storyteller, and Richard Mitchley is an extraordinary narrator. His voice resonates with the atmosphere of the British Isles. The power and depth of his voice as the Grey King cause the listener to cower, and his icy tones create chills as the Brenin Llwyd blows by. As Will comes to understand the eerie might of the warestones, Mitchley brings goose bumps to the listener's skin. The interplay of past and present is compelling and believable, given his masterful presentation. This is a fabulous listen! Product Description

Collected here are detailed and diverse essays, some that examine Rural Hours, Susan Fenimore Cooper's most famous work, and others that help establish Cooper as a major practitioner and theorist of American nature writing and as a socially engaged artist in many other genres. These essays discuss Cooper's uses and manipulations of various literary conventions, such as the picturesque, the literary village sketch, and domestic fiction, and illuminate her positions on conservation, religion, and woman's place in society.

The engaging collection is divided into four sections. The first features essays examining Cooper's work in light of her relationship with her famous literary father, James Fenimore Cooper, and their devotion to and cultivation of each other's careers. The second focuses on Cooper's fascination with landscape and its relation to her environmental philosophies. Rural Hours is the subject of the third section, which presents new readings on its subtly crafted authorial stance, its two complementary conceptions of time, and its re-valuation of rural and scientific ways of knowing. The collection concludes with four works whose insights into Cooper's views on gender, domesticity, and environmental philosophy grow out of comparisons with several contemporary women writers.

These remarkable essays by both established and emerging scholars of nineteenth-century literature present new findings and insights into a writer who is being reintroduced to the fields of eco-criticism and American literature.

From Wales comes this tale of young Huw, whose lilting harp music enchants Tylwyth Teg, the magic people of Bearded Lake.

From the depths of the black lake comes the gift of a beautiful silver cow; and the cow is magic, for its milk is three times as rich as the milk of an ordinary cow, and she gives three times as much.

Huw's father is a selfish and greedy man, and his wealth makes him greedier than ever. Huw tries to make his father see the magic, but he scoffs at Tylwyth Teg...until they seek their revenge.

Told with a rhythm that evokes the Welsh language, Susan Cooper has brought new life to this ancient tale. Warwick Hutton's evocative illustrations capture the magic of this fateful story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cooper's New Book Is Tops, But Doesn't Go Over The Top
Okay, I've been a fan of Ms. Cooper's for many years now, but I would never let that get in the way of an objective review. Happily, with her latest Milt Kovak mystery, there's no need to put objectivity to the test. RUDE AWAKENING has all the trappings that make this series truly great. As with her previous book, SHOTGUN WEDDING, she intersperses a main (more serious) tale involving Sheriff Milt with a lighter (fun and funny) mystery involving one or more of her background characters. This time around Milt has to deal with a psychotic psychiatris who is gunning for his wife Jean over an incident eight years previous that left the diabolical doc comatose. Add in an abducted four year old that Jean is caring for and trying to get the town to put up a much needed traffic light. Milt's hands are overflowing.
Meanwhile, dimwitted but well-meaning Deputy Dalton Pettigrew has snuck off to Tulsa, to meet his online 'girlfriend' for the first time, to disasterous results. Stuck in Tulsa with no I.D., money, (or pants) Dalton's sister comes to the rescue, not knowing her son is in the hands of a killer and trying to keep her brother's situation from their overbearing mother. But lest you think all is fun and games, Cooper keeps the suspense tight toward the end, and doesn't let up till the epilogue.
Cooper yet again delivers some great spit-take inducing lines ( "Makes the car go!"; "Hi, I'm Geoffrey.") that she is known for. Her writing is as fresh as ever, and she keeps her mains true to character, at the same time believably building up her formerly background charaters; but taking them all to new levels. RUDE AWAKENING is Cooper at her finest, and with new levels of outrageousness that don't detract from the suspense. Fans of Janet Evanovich should pick up Susan Rogers Cooper and hang on tight! ... Product Description
In "Elinor Wyllys," Susan Fenimore Cooper demonstrates an unusual breadth of knowledge about history, national and international affairs, the fine arts, and the environment. America during the 1830s was undergoing great social and cultural change, and the author is deeply concerned with how these changes are affecting both daily life in a small town and the nation as a whole. 2-0 out of 5 stars Too much analysis, not enough biography
For a book in a series of biographies, I got this book expecting justthat.Instead I found out only a little about one of my favorite authors, instead being overloaded with critical analysis. Many times Mikkelsensimply judges part of Cooper's work as good or bad with little explanationas to her judgements. Some of her analysis was good and the summaries ofCooper's works were useful, but I believe she did a bit too much analysis. Many times she read into scenes ideas that I did not think Cooper intended, often subjecting the writings to various critical approaches with littleregard as to what Ms. Cooper meant when she wrote those scenes. It wasjust like my high school English classes - overanalyzation (sp?) withoutany thought of what the writer originally meant or what the average readerwill get out of it.Less analysis and more biographical information wouldhave been more pleasing to me. ... The new E.J. Pugh mystery - Romantic novelist E.J. Pugh has been nominated for a coveted award from the American Romance Writers Association . . . The convention should have been fun and informative. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous in all aspects
I've read Cooper before but not this series.I realize that I've picked it up "in the middle" but there's enough back story to follow what happened before. This was everything I look for in a light mystery--humor, good dialogue, a complex mystery, good death scenes, and excellent characterizations.I have a teenage daughter and felt the honesty in the scenes dealing with the E.J.'s 3 teenage children. There were times I literally laughed out loud. And, more importantly, there wasn't a time when the murders and the "whodunit" aspect felt secondary to the story (something that occasionally happens in other humorous mysteries).Definitely a recommendation and I'm looking for the others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Susan Rogers Cooper Does It Again!
It's been seven years since Susan Rogers Cooper (and the rest of us) visited E.J Pugh; wife, mother of three, romance novelist, and sleuth. Was "Romanced To Death", the new E.J. Pugh mystery worth the wait? You better believe it! The book follows E.J. to the American Romance Writers Association convention in Austin, TX, where she almost immediately is embroiled in murder, mayhem, and catty backstabbing. Interspersed throughout E.J.'s escapades is a deeper, darker story involving her 13 year old adopted daughter, whose family was brutally murdered nine years before. Cooper uses flashbacks to her first E.J. Pugh mystery "One, Two, What Did Daddy Do?" to set this part of the story up, which allows new readers to appreciate this book as a stand alone, if they've never read any of the previous books in the series. For fans and faithful readers, Cooper's characters are still fresh, her plotting is first rate, and the resolution is very satisfying! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars We're EJ fans, but she seemed a little off here
We've read all of Susan Rogers Cooper's delightful stories, including the six Sheriff Milt Kovak books, the (very difficult to find) two Kimmey Kruse stand-up comedian stories, and the previous six EJ Pugh mysteries. Obviously we like Cooper's great writing ability; one would swear she can turn a soccer practice carpooling chore into an event of note with her descriptive and insightful commentary on everyday life. All of her characters tend to be a little low profile, humble practitioners with an overdose of curiosity that leads to solving crimes, sometimes almost unwittingly. Unlike her sheriff, who of course was paid to catch killers, Kimmey and EJ are strictly amateurs who depend on cajoling friends and policemen into helping move along reasonably good plots.

In this story, EJ is far from her home (Texas), and is re-united with her three sisters (with spouses/partners along) in a contrived vacation in St. Johns cooked up by her mother who wants to see the girls "get along". Much of the story revolves around their childhood goings-on and/or their perceptions of each other's adult lives and situations in society. Hence, the plot is almost a little secondary to the mental and verbal meanderings in the Virgin Islands setting. There is a murder or two to solve, and even if a bit improbable in total, we're hooked enough by a few real clues mixed in with several red herrings along the way to feel some suspense. Indeed, we thought the ending fairly surprising, and hardly anticipated the ultimate culprit at all.

While we'd readily give almost all Cooper's books 4 stars, we don't think this one was one of her best -- maybe the unusual setting (although entertaining in itself in some ways) put our author off her usual game plan; and with none of the regular supporting characters to help out, we didn't know anybody here either. Still, the faithful will want to read this; and while many of her others seemed better to me, all 15 books are fun, worthwhile "reads" without demanding too much from us the reader but "enjoy". Why not ?!!

4-0 out of 5 stars light hearted mystery
This is my first E.J. Pugh mystery. It was a very fast read, the mystery kept me guessing, and I liked the characters of the four sisters. The memories of E.J. and her sisters while they were growing up greatly helped in understanding the dynamics of their dysfunctional family. The mystery itself was good, clues were there, but not obvious. I will read the other books in this series with enjoyment. If you are looking for an easy fast read, this is it.

3-0 out of 5 stars It Could Have Gotten A Higher Rating But...
This was the first book that I've ever read by Ms. Cooper.I picked it up intially because I had been to St. John, U.S.V.I. a few times in the past, and wanted to see which sites were mentioned.

I liked this book, but I found the writing style to be a bit spare.I have no real mental image of what the protagonist and her husband look like, or whether or not I would like them if I met them. The story itself was interesting, and the sibling problems added a nice twist to the story.Actually, I probably would have liked the book better if the family relationships were the sole focus of the book (Ms. Cooper seemed to handle that well). The mystery seemed to be a secondary issue here, and the whole treatment of the crimes that were occuring seemed too lackadaisical.

Although I liked the book, I don't yet know if I care enough about the characters to read the other stories.I'll have to think about that for a while...

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book to take on vacation
This is the first book of the series that I have read.I found it thoroughly enjoyable. The dynamics between four very different sisters on vacation were very well drawn. The characters are very real, the mystery interesting, and I found myself laughing at the situations the characters found themselves in at points.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tropical Treat
This book combined mystery, humor and travel.Anyone visiting St. John will recognize Cruz Bay, lush hills, abandoned sugar mills, and lazy afternoons with fritters and rum!Her relationship with her sisters wasreal and hilariously funny. She often would go back into her childhood andrelate events that explains her love-hate relationship with her sisters. The time she was locked in the bathroom and left on the family road tripmade the reader understand her often stormy relationship with her sisters. The murder was the focal point of the book, but her descriptions of St.John, her hilarious characters, and her family relationships kept meturning pages into the dark, humid, tropical night! ... FUNNY AS A DEAD RELATIVE by Susan Rogers Cooper is a story of a girl named Kimmey Kruse, that brings trouble whenever she is near her relatives, she can't just stop investagate things.this is an appropriate choice for any one because it deals with being around your family members. Some people might face what Kimmey ,and the rest of her family and friendsfaced. For example some one in your family might get shootby a gun and die or get murdered. What I don't think is appropriate is that is has some swears in it. Kimmey goes to a family reunion.well kim met her cousin will.she liked him,and he liked her.well that day will's mom Leticia dead.Nobody knew why but kim and her friend pucci ,who is a cop found out why,and later in the book they found out who or what killed her.It was murder.some body else in the family dead too,by murder.well kim's mom and dad and aunts and other relatives had a lot of secrts and then kim found out all of them out by asking.Well it's a great book but that is only if you like mysteries, murders, and swears.i dont want to tell who the killer is but you will think its alot of people and then you will find who it is and you will be like how can that be. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My son loves this book
My ten year old son loves me to read to him, but he does not like to read anything for himself except comic books. He really enjoyed reading this book and considers it his favorite.

1-0 out of 5 stars The stupiest book I have ever read.
The stupidest book I have ever read.

The Monster and the Boggart by Susan Cooper was a very boring book that I wouldn't recommend to anyone. The book starts off with a guy buying a castle from a guy that had died in the castle. The boggart's spirit lives in the castle and the spirit likes cocoa. Then Mr. Mochine finds a letter from the previous owner of the castle. Next Jessup meets Harold a scientist looking for the lochness monster. They meet on a plane while on their way to Scottland.
Harold, Jessup, and Emily go and look for the lochness monster. Harold has twelve boats help him on his search. He and his team go to a serant spot to pick up Jessup and Emily. The boggart that took the form of the lochness monster is not only trapped in that form, but he is also the last of his kind. This has floating spoons and letters from the pervious owner.
Mr. Mochine bought the castle from Devan McDevan. Mr. McDevan left a note for Mr. Mochine. The note was telling him that the boggart likes cocoa and that the boggart likes to play tricks on you. Again the spoon in Mr. Mochine cocoa rises up and the cocoa disappears and the spoon drops. Harold is also a writer. Jessup likes the book he wrote and belives it.
You shouldn't read TheMonster and the Boggart, because this was a very boring book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so great
I had to read this book for a school book report. After reading the first page and reviews on Amazon I was expecting it to be a bit more exciting, but I found myself mentally complaining every time I picked it up and forced myself to read it.I will admit it had it's good points, but all in all I didn't enjoy it much.Maybe adults would like it more, but honestly, I don't think many kids my age would.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it!
