Bad proof reading...
I am a big fan of Susan Coolidge books and own the other books in the same series. This is the first time I bought a book from this publisher and I was so annoyed with all the typos and bad print in this book. It totally spoilt the book for me. I would not buy from this publisher again

Great book - NOT FROM THIS PUBLISHER, THOUGH!!
I purchased this book in paperback - I can't comment on any other versions - and there are SO many spelling, punctuation and publishing errors it is almost impossible to read.There are sentences that just end at the end of the line.We began to mark them and found oftentimes more than 15 errors per page.This book was obviously not proofread or there were errors in the final publishing.This review isn't against the book - it's a wonderful story.But against the publisher - General Books, LLC.Please ensure that you get an edition NOT from this publisher.

Clover
It is a shame that Susan Coolidge's books are either unheard of or out of print.
If you enjoyed reading "What Katy Did", "What Katy Did at School", and "What Katy Did Next", you will love "Clover". In it, we read of our beloved Katy's marriage, and our nearly as beloved Clover's experiences in Colorado. It was an enjoyable read, although short, and I am hoping that "In the High Valley" (the final book in the series) will be re-published some time soon.

What Katy Did Next (EasyRead Edition)
Rubbish!!

This was one of my favourite books when I was younger.This edition was a profound disappointment.There were typos on virtually every page and - it's acknowledged in the text - several pages were missing!

I will think twice about buying books from Amazon, and particular in EasyRead format, again.

A Lovely Book
When I found this series, I loved them. I went right through What Katy Did and What Katy Did at School. I love romance, and was excited when I found that there was romance in What Katy Did Next, I loved the book. But was slightly disappointed 3/4 through the book, and at the end. I must say again the book is a fabulous one, but if you are looking for romantic classics, I wouldn't turn to this series. There is very little romance I must say. And I was not pleased with the ending. But in spite of that, the series was delicious!

This Book is Very...Good
I really liked "What Katy Did Next."I am a big fan of all of the Katy books, and, although this book is not quite as good as the others in the trio, it is still wholesome, descriptive, and, well--it has a touch of romance mixed in.
In "What Katy Did Next," Katy is invited to go to Europe for a year with her friends Mrs. Ashe and Amy.Katy promptly decides to go, packs her bags, and departs on a vessel bound for England.She stays in Europe for six months, sees the places she has dreamed about, and, as aforesaid, has a romantic scene just at the end.
This is a sweet and satisfying read, especially for girls 10-14.

Very good book but sequel "Clover", is not readily available

What are you going to do next, Katy?
Katy and her younger, Clover go to New England boarding school by "What Katy Did at School." They get many great friends. I become the feeling from which I became Katy's classmate.
In "What Katy Did Next", Katy's European tour is written interestingly. However, I do not so like the parent and child who are the companion of Katy. Moreover, the classmate of nostalgic Katy also appears. And we are excited by the whereabouts of the romance of Katy.

An Interesting book!
This time, Katy is not staying at her beloved home in the countryside like she does while staying sick in the first book, "What Katy Did", but instead, she goes to a boarding school in East Coast with her sister Clover. This happens when Cousin Olivia (or Mrs. Page. She is Katy's cousin) says that Katy is solemn and does not "bubble over" like Cousin Olivia's daughter, Lilly, and she tells Katy's father about this untrue judgement. Her father, worried, sends Katy and Clover away to a boarding school on the East Coast.

Dr. Carr (Katy's father) and the two very sad sisters, go off together to the train which would take them to Hillsover, the name of the boarding school. At the train, Katy, Clover, and Dr. Carr meets Mr. and Mrs. Page and the "bubbly" Lilly. Lilly is very snobbish and spoiled but the two Carr sisters listens to Lilly's opinion about Hillsover, and they decide that they half like and half dislike it.

After some time of traveling, Katy, Clover, Lilly, and Dr. Carr reach Hillsover. Katy and Clover are allowed to spend one night with Dr. Carr in another Hotel and after they meet a very strange but interesting girl called Rosy Red, they start thinking that Hillsover will be pretty interesting after all. But they are horrified that they have to share a washroom with other girls and Dr. Carr, noting this, buys a washroom for them, very much relieving the sisters' terror. They meet all the girls and starts getting used to the flow of Hillsover. All the girls dislike Miss Jane, a missionary's apprentice, who has a verry sharp tongue and makes many strict rules, and another teacher, Miss Nipson, who does not have a good judgement over the girls. But the students are very respectful and rather afraid of another teacher, named Miss Florence.

As the days go by, Katy decides to make a society called S.S.U.C., which stands for "Society for the Suppresion of Unladylike Conduct" because the girls are flirting around with the boys in another house. The girls who joins has to be determined to be ladylike but Lilly does not join the society,
calling it "stupid". This society makes a fun game called WORD AND QUESTION. You have to write down a word and a question and the leader, who is Katy, puts it in a basket, shakes it, and the other players take out a paper. The players has to write a poem answering the question and using a word. This is a very fun part to read.

After a year, Katy and Clover goes back to their home but has to endure the slowness of the canal. They come back, happy and safe, and they find that their room had been decorated beautifully. It's a very delightful part.

This book is very interesting. Though I still like this book, I wonder what happened to Clarence, a boyfriend of Clover's. Clover made friends with him at Mr. and Mrs. Page's house during Autumn Vacation, but the book doesn't say much about after the Vacation, except a letter from him. I think this book was very, very,very, fun to read. I think it was a good book. Many people would like this. The next one is "What Katy Did Next".

Tomboy Katy Becomes a Lady!
Those who remember Katy as a tomboy who always tore her frock and ran holes in her hose will be pleasantly surprised when they see how she turned out. Yes, she did mature greatly at the end of the first book, "What Katy Did", but the second book shows her as such a ladylike young woman that it will seem like she never ran around wildly as a child.

Katy and Clover go to boarding school where they make friends and have all sorts of adventures that only boarding school girls can have. (It is an episodic novel.) There are lots of funny stories about how school rules get broken and what it's like to live on the same floor as a strict teacher. A whole chapter is devoted to a wonderful game called "WORD AND QUESTION". It is my favorite chapter of the book, since it is full of funny poems and funny situations. (Word and Question is also one of my favorite games to play.) Another chapter is all about the S.S.U.C., a club of which Katy is president. The acrostic unbelievably stands for "Society for Suppression of Unladylike Conduct"--for Katy, Clover and all the members are determined to be as ladylike and proper as possible.

Some people despair that Katy, who was such a wonderful tomboy, finally lost herself. They say that the book influences little girls who are like Katy to be someone they are not. Personally, I think that "What Katy Did at School" is not about a girl being something she is not. In fact, Katy is extremely self-possessed. I believe that the books "What Katy Did" and "What Katy Did in School", when taken together, teach little girls that it is okay to be wild and free--but it is also okay to be ladylike. Anyone who says that Katy stopped having fun in this book has never read it, was never really a girl, or just has a personal bias against boarding schools. ... Read more

The final chapter
This book is the final of the Katy series.
There's not much about Katy this time - mostly Clover, as in the 4th book "Clover", but it is an excellent end to the series.

It is set about 6 years after the end of "Clover", so there are a few surprises in characters - nice surprises.

wonderful and underrated classic
I read this many years ago, but I still remember it fondly. It's a wonderful old classic like Anne of Green Gables, but it is shocking how underrated this book is. It's one of these books filled with the adventures (and misadventures) of a spirited girl named Katy Carr, though her siblings also play a part in this book (albeit smaller)

One can only wonder how Katy would have fared today after her accident. With today's medical technology, she probably would have been on her feet a LOT more quickly - and I could say the same for Helen. I felt bad for Helen, and felt that she should NOT have given up her finance due to her own accident. Helen is a wonderful and warm person who deserved her own happiness and just to give it up to make her finance not feel obligated to 'take care' of her, I did not like that. If the same happened to her finance, I doubt he would have made the same sacrifice she did. But this is a book written in a time where women still had to deal with double standards as a part of daily life.

What happened to Katy was hard for her, but her long recuperation has taught her many lessons, and she actually becomes a better person in the end for the lessons that the 'School of Life' has taught her. This is overall a great book, if you liked 'Anne of Green Gables' or 'A Tree Grows in Brooklyn', you should like this book.

Little-Known Classic
I first read this series when I was 8 years old, and 13 years later, I still love it.This is one of those classic books that you'll want to read at least once a year.The "scrapes" in which Katy finds herself are usually caused by her big heart; each one leaves you laughing, but is the base of a firm ground for a child to stand for.Makes a great gift for kids, or is great to read aloud with the family.An absolute must-have.

Nice, Old Fashioned Book
Twelve year old Katy Carr and her five brothers and sisters have all kinds of fun adventures.A thicket becomes "Paradise", a hayloft a place for a "feast", and the entire house a playground for games invented by Katy. Katy means well, but is impulsive and irresponsible and is constantly getting into scrapes and trouble. After the Carr's Cousin Helen visits, Katy vows to be more like Cousin Helen, who is saint-like despite the fact that she had a bad accident and hasn't been able to walk for years. Unfortunately, Katy gets into the worst scrape of her life the very next day - disobeying her Aunt Izzie, she herself has a terrible accident. It will take Katy a long time to recover and in the course of her recovery she grows into a beautiful, responsible young woman.

I loved reading "What Katy Did" as a child and it's still fun to read as an adult. Written in the 1870's, it is definitely old-fashioned, but it makes me yearn for the days when life was so much simpler.Susan Coolidge writes as if she is sitting opposite the reader, verbally telling the story and uses words that children might use such as "honestest" which makes the book a pleasant read. Coolidge also includes humor that children won't get, but adults will, such as when Katy gives Aunt Izzie $7.25 and a long list of Christmas presents to buy with that small amount of money. Katy is a very realistic heroine; yes, she gets into mischief, but what child doesn't, and she means well. The rest of the children are equally engaging, for me Elsie stands out. Cousin Helen is indeed saintly, almost unbelievable in her goodness, but Coolidge makes her believable also.

"What Katy Did" is a nice, old-fashioned read.

What Katy Did.
I absolutely loved this book when I was a young girl in Australia. The story of how Katy changed from a selfish girl into a caring young woman under the influence of cousin Helen, and her trying circumstances, made me want to be more like Helen also. I would recommend this to all lovers of classic stories and times gone by.My 15 year old enjoyed it recently also.

...on your bookshelf! WHAT KATY DID is the lively story of Katherine Carr, the eldest of six children-the others are Clover, Elsie, Dorry (a boy), Johnnie (Joanna, a girl), and Phil. Her father, Dr. Carr, doesn't mind Katy being lively and adventurous, but she is also heedless, untidy, and sometimes unkind to her siblings and doesn't care about the work she causes her Aunt Izzie, who cares for the motherless brood. Katy's days are full of "scrapes" like playing "the game of the Rivers" at school and the hide-and-seek game in the dark, Kikeri, until she is involved in a terrible accident. From there she must learn to rebuild her life; she is helped by Cousin Helen, who has not let the paralysis of her legs affect her mind or her heart. While it is true that Katy is "tamed" by her accident, she eventually still remains the innovative,fun-loving girl she was before. The chapter about Katy's Christmas and Valentine's Day plans, especially the latter, make you wish we celebrated the holidays the way they did 100 years ago!

This is a great book-for a long time I liked it much better than LITTLE WOMEN-because Katy is even more lively and ingenious than Jo March. The sequels are also good, especially the first.

There are four sequels to KATY, only two of which are in print, sadly. WHAT KATY DID AT SCHOOL follows Katy's and Clover's adventures at Hillsover, a boarding school in the East. Here they meet one of the KATY books most memorable characters, the mischievous "Rose Red" who makes their year's stay lively, to say the least. The girls play wonderful games in their spare time, including something called "Word and Question" that sounds like great fun, and Katy even "tames" Miss Jane, the humorless hall monitor, and lives down an accusation. Here we meet the Carrs' cousins the Pages, Olivia and her husband and children, the selfish Lilly, who's at school with the girls, and Clarence, a teasing boy who takes a shine to Clover.

In WHAT KATY DID NEXT, Katy accompanies her neighbor Mrs. Ashe and her daughter Amy on "the Grand Tour" of Europe. This is a wonderful portrait of how people traveled to England, France, Italy, and other European countries 100 years ago. It also paints a not-so-pleasant picture of a time when many diseases were rife, and of all the troubles Katy has when Amy comes down with "Roman fever" (typhoid, I believe). But is also there Katy meets Ned Worthington, Mrs. Ashe's brother, and discovers something new to do next!

The out-of-print sequels-please, someone republish!--follow the adventures of Clover and the rest of the family. In CLOVER, she and Phil, who has been sick and has been prescribed "good mountain air" as the best cure, move to a little town high in the Colorado Rockies, where they discover new friends and some old ones-to the person who wondered what happened to Clarence, he is coincidentally living nearby on a ranch with his British partner Geoffrey. It is there Clover realizes Clarence would like their old friendship to be something more.

IN THE HIGH VALLEY is the fifth and last title in the sequence. In this story, Geoffrey's brother Lionel and sister Imogen come to live at the ranch with him. Imogen is prepared to hate the West but gradually warms to the Colorado countryside and grows to love the Carr family, perhaps one more than the other. Very strange edition of good books
The strength of this three-pack is getting three of these fine books in one cover, BUT even from a cursory look at the copy I received, this was not put together with any care.The books are in the "wrong" order since "What Katy Did Next" is in the middle even though it occurs sequentially after "What Katy Did at School".Moreover, an initial chapter from "What Katy Did at School" is printed as the last chapter of "What Katy Did" (so it occurs twice within the covers), and very disorienting if you didn't know where it belonged as it is clearly after the natural conclusion of the "What Katy Did" book.

Don't know if there are other flaws as I haven't actually read the books yet, but this is more than careless. ... Read more
