Chapters: The Black Company, Shadow Games, the White Rose, Bleak Seasons, Shadows Linger, Dreams of Steel, the Silver Spike, Soldiers Live, Water Sleeps, She Is the Darkness. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Black Company is the first novel in Glen Cook's ongoing series, The Black Company. The book combines elements of epic fantasy and dark fantasy as it describes the dealings of an elite mercenary unit, the Black Company, with the Lady, ruler of the Northern Empire. The Dominator is an extremely powerful wizard who has the ability to turn his bitterest enemies into his loyal servants, even those nearly his equal in magic (hence the name). The most potent of his victims are called the Ten Who Were Taken, or just Taken for short. With his wife, the Lady (whose magical skill is second only to his), he founded an empire unrivaled for evil. It was overthrown by a rebellion led by the White Rose, but neither she nor the rebel wizards were strong enough to kill the Dominator, the Lady or the Taken. The best they could do was to render them unconscious and imprison them. After four centuries, the wizard Bomanz awakened the Lady, in an attempt to learn from her. She manipulated him, winning her freedom. She then unleashed the Taken, but betrayed the Dominator, leaving him where he was, and proceeded to resurrect the empire. As with the old, so it was with the new - a rebellion broke out, spearheaded this time by the Circle of Eighteen. The Circle is made up of magicians not individually as strong as the Taken, but usually united in their goals. The Taken, on the other hand, battle each other as much as they do the rebels. The Black Company's current employer, the Syndic of Beryl, is losing control of his decadent city to rival fa...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5667292 ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Unique and enjoyable read
I found the first two books of the series (and the first half of this book) to be mediocre. However, the last half of this book really draws you in and has Cook's trademark realism (well, for a book that blends Witchcraft meets Sci-fi).

The interesting thing about these books is that the main character (Marika) is really the "bad guy". She supresses societies progress and kills thousands upon thousands in order to shape the world in her image. Her character is a glimpse into madness and how one rationalizes even the most heinous of crimes (murder, mass murder, genocide, etc...).

5-0 out of 5 stars Break-Neck conclusion to the trilogy
The last of the trilogy, Ceremony takes the world Cook described richly in the first two books and exposes it to the first meeting of this society with a major space-faring race. That race is human, and could easily be us in the future. We only read snippets about these humans, but learn enough to know we are fighting amongst ourselves and the Meth (the race of the Darkwar trilogy) are about to be dragged into it.The humans of this book are technologically far in advance of the Meth, but know nothing of the mystical powers accepted as real by these people. Merika, unlikely champion of the old ways, leads the battle against the treacherous meth who would destroy the world she loves and hates. Epic battle against a cold starscape -- witchery, black ghosts and ancient magic against lasers, nuclear engines and electromagnetic shields. Will Merika win again, even against these incredible odds? It kept me reading long past my bed time. I own the series but would love to have a spare copy to loan out. Unfortunately, the whole set is out of print and I don't think the publisher will print it again. The ending sequence left me in tears. A dramatic, fitting end to a well-written series. Unlike a lot of trilogies written these days, there won't be a sequel. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wizardry and tech mesh
The second book in the Darkwar trilogy sets up Marika's madness in book three. Personally, I found this book a little hard to get through at times, but all in all I enjoyed the story and found it was better when viewed through the lens of book three.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first and best SF tragedy I've ever read.
The series seems to continue with small tragedies happening to the maincharacter.Every time, she overcomes the setback and comes out stronger, until the last tragedy which simply brings all of the others to theforefront and depresses her more than anything before. While I am not onefor tragedies, it is a tale well told which will have you walking aroundnumb for days afterward.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not just a bridge between the first and last
The second in the Darkwar trilogy, Warlock shows Merika's maturation into a deadly force fighting for the survival of her community. As the first book introduced us to a primitive society on the edge of extinction, Warlock exposes us to the larger world, technologically advanced and decadent, living off rich resources with no thought to the future. Merika is forced to do despicable things, but still we sympathize for her because she bled first. Cook weaves a tapestry of treachery, intrigue and deceit and Merika is our brutal sword slashing through it all and making her own path while we follow helplessly. In this book we also get even more savage descriptions of battle carnage, culminating in the introduction to the world of human history's most devastating weapon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great recipes!
I LOVE this book so much, I got it for my friend who's a foodie and HE loves it, too!

Working back to back 12-hour shifts leaves me with limited time to cook - I like being able to cook something GOOD quickly instead of giving in to fast food.

2-0 out of 5 stars I wasn't impressed
I checked this cookbook out from the library and am glad I didn't buy it.The recipes don't look that appetizing, and many of them use ingredients that I'd have to search all over for in a normal grocery store, or go to a specialty store for.I don't think these recipes qualify as "easy, everyday ideas."

5-0 out of 5 stars The best cookbook I have purchased in awhile...
I own tons of cookbooks and love to cook.I originally purchased this book for my husband so that he could learn to cook something other than prepared foods. The recipes are fast, easy, and very tasty. He likes it because it has pictures of the meal - this helps him understand how things are supposed to be once the meal is ready to be served. He struggles a little with even these recipes because he knows so little about cooking and the names of the more gourmet ingredients.Despite this, he has made some really fabulous meals out of this book. Now even I reach for this cookbook first. My once favored Patricia Wells and Julia Childs cookbooks are languishing on the shelf. My only warning is that the gourmet ingredients are not always readily available at every grocery store. I live in a big city so it is easy for me to obtain pancetta, various specialty pastas, and fresh herbs. It might not be as easy for someone in a more suburban or rural environment.

5-0 out of 5 stars many ideas for quick and easy meals
Quick food gives recipes that are easy to follow and use ingredients that are readily available in stores. Different types of cuisines are represented here, from a simple Italian fresh tomato and basil pasta to fragrant Southeast Aisn lemongrass beef and rice dish.

The book is divided into six main parts: Pot, Pan, Wok, Grill, Oven, and Dessert. There is also a picture on the page facing the recipe which gives a great visual tool as to how the end result would look.An index is provided, and makes it easy to flip to, for example, recipes using beef.

Although many of the recipes are easy to throw together in a few minutes, there are also recipes for stews and roasts, which take longer to cook. These are justified, however, by the fact that minimal effort and time is required in preparation of the dish. Then just pop it into the oven, or leave on a slow simmer, before dishing out into bowls and plates.Overall this is a good book when you don't have a lot of time on your hands to putter about in the kitchen. We all need quick and simple recipes on our repertoire. ...
