Product Description
R. W. Apple, Jr., of The New York Times credits third-generation Alabamian Frank Stitt with turning Birmingham into a "sophisticated, easygoing showplace of enticing, southern-accented cooking." His southern peers think his cooking may have a more profound sense of place than any of theirs. His food is rustic and homey, but sophisticated in method.

Now, Alabama's favorite son has written a long-awaited cookbook that features his enticing Provençal-influenced southern food. More than 150 recipes range from the traditional--Spicy Green Tomato and Peach Relish, Spoonbread, and Pickled Shrimp--to the inspired--Slow-Roasted Black Grouper with Ham and Pumpkin Pirlau and Pork Loin with Corn Pudding and Grilled Eggplant. Desserts such as Bourbon Panna Cotta and Sweet Potato Tart with Coconut Crust and Pecan Streusel elevate the best of the South for cooks everywhere. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books
I am a Southerner and I love the food I grew up with. Most Southern cookbooks are awful books that assume that Southern food is nothing but lard and fried chicken. This is the food that I grew up with. Fresh greens and peas and heirloom tomatoes harvested from back yard gardens or bought from the backs of trucks on the side of the highway. Fish and shellfish caught by uncles and brothers. Meat and poultry purchased from small, local farms. Cakes and pies made for special occasions from old family recipes. THAT is Southern food, not that horrible Paula Deen crud.

If you share my experience as a Southerner, and long for this type of food, then this cookbook is for you. If you want Krispy Kreme bread pudding and care more about how much crud you can pile on the top of your grits than the quality of the grits themselves, then stick with Paula Deen.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing I would ever use
I was disappointed in this book.It wasn't anything like I expected after watching some of his recipes on TV.Will be putting it in the ProLife book sale box.

1-0 out of 5 stars do not order from this seller!
Please do not order from this seller.I never received the book, even after contacting them through Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Cookbook!
This is the first of Frank Stitt's masterpieces. It is a beautiful and functional cookbook, and it would be a welcome addition to anyone's kitchen. He is a phenomenal chef, his restaurants are world famous, and now so are his cookbooks. Birmingham, Alabama, and the South should be proud of what he as done to promote them. This book is highly recommended for anyone anywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good like gravy.
I have only eaten at Highlands Bar and Grill once and it was the best food i have ever eaten in a restaurant, a pinnacle moment, like the first time I saw Pantera play live.It beats out many so-called fancy hip places in many of the major cities of the country. The food at Highlands can be simple and complicated simultaneously. This book takes the philosophy of the restaurant and shares some its secrets. What you will find is that many of the best meals are made from simple, fresh ingredients. It is a book that I have read and used more than I thought I would.

The book has chapters covering various topics: adult beverages, appetizers, seafood, poultry, meats, vegetables, desserts, a section on commonly used sauces, dressings, etc., and some tips on kitchen equipment and techniques.there are lots of very nice photographs throughout the book including pictures of the various dishes, local farmers, and other people.

You will find the food can be very Southern (e.g. Spoonbread), or the recipes are infused with the French flavors that Frank Stitt leans toward. Most of the recipes are actually not that complicated or difficult. Some are super easy like potato cakes. Since i cook mostly sweet treats, I have focused on some real jewels here. One of the coolest sweet thangs here is Brown Butter Almond Financier - a slightly more complicated recipe than the usual cake, but well worth the effort.

It's quite fashionable to talk about buying local produce these days, but Frank Stitt has been pushing this idea for years and years. He emphasizes fresh ingredients and using what you have locally both for the benefit of the flavor and the benefit of the people who make our food.I also like that Frank Stitt can be very practical at times - when discussing buying a mandoline, he recommends an inexpensive plastic model over the expensive steel versions.

By the way, the best food i've ever eaten isn't in a restaurant. my mom makes that food. ... Read more

Product Description
Widely known as the winner of the 1966 National Book Award and author of the best-selling novel Deliverance, James Dickey devoted himself as much to the critique of the modern literary tradition as to his participation in it. A writer enthralled by teaching, he lectured at several major universities before settling at the University of South Carolina for nearly three decades as poet-in-residence. After his death in 1997, a transcription of his lectures was found among his papers. Collected here and published for the first time, these lectures reveal judgments and appraisals Dickey would use to great effect in his teaching. They also contribute to the unraveling of Dickey's art from the larger-than-life myth that surrounded him.

In a comprehensive introduction to Dickey's remarks, Donald J. Greiner evaluates the relevance of the writer's often sharply worded opinions. The volume brings to life class sessions planned and delivered soon after Dickey took up full-time residence at the University of South Carolina, in the triumphal years following his rapid succession of honors. Full of asides, witticisms, and afterthoughts, the sessions suggest not the pontification of a scholar at an academic conference but the confident learning of a practicing poet who happens to enjoy being in the classroom. Clearly setting forth his sense of literary criticism, Dickey repeatedly emphasizes the preeminence of the poet over the critic, the original use of language as a primary criterion for effective poetry, and the centrality of personal reaction to poetry as a measure of its value. Dickey's comments are valuable for their insight into both his own thought processes and those of the poets he reviewed, among them William Butler Yeats, Ezra Pound, Dylan Thomas, A. E. Housman, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Robert Frost, Walter de la Mare, and Robert Bridges. ... Read more

FOUR BLOCKBUSTER AUTHORS
CAPTURED LIVE AT NEW YORK'S TOWN HALL

On February 2, 2002, Stephen King, Pat Conroy, John Grisham and Peter Straub gathered at New York's Town Hall for a very special evening. These four bestselling authors stepped up to the microphone to raise money for one of the most recognizable voices in audiobooks, Frank Muller, an actor who sustained terrible injuries from a motorcycle accident. Muller, who has recorded hundreds of novels, including many by these authors, may never work again.

This once-in-a-lifetime event is captured here, and 100% of all profits will be donated to The Wavedancer Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports Frank Muller and other artists who fall prey to illness or injury and can no longer perform.

Grisham kicks off the evening with a heartfelt reading of an excerpt from his blockbuster bestseller The Summons. He's followed by Straub who captivates the audience with a hair-raising episode from Black House, the latest thriller he co-authored with Stephen King. King changes pace with a joyful reading of his classic short story The Revenge of Lardass Hogan. Finally, Conroy engages the audience in a hilarious chat on the art of writing.

A unique program that pays tribute to a true master craftsman, this audiobook is an unforgettable listening experience. ... Read more

Product Description
Though our roots are in the Colonial South, we Crackers are essentially just another American fusion culture, and our table and our stories are constantly expanding -- nearly as fast as our waistlines. We aren't ashamed of either, and we're always delighted with the prospect of company: someone to feed and make laugh, to listen to our hundred thousand stories of food and family and our long American past.

Crackers, rednecks, hillbillies, and country boys have long been the brunt of many jokes, yet this old Southern culture is a rich and vibrant part of Amer-ican history. In The Cracker Kitchen, Janis Owens traces the root of the word Cracker back to its origins in Shakespeare's Elizabethan England -- when it meant braggart or big shot -- through its proliferation in America, where it became a derogatory term to describe poor and working-class Southerners. This compelling anthropological exploration peels back the historic misconceptions connected with the word to reveal a breed of proud, fiercely independent Americans with a deep love of their families, their country, their stories, and, most important, their food.

With 150 recipes from over twenty different seasonal menus, The Cracker Kitchen offers a full year's worth of eating and rejoicing: from spring's Easter Dinner -- which includes recipes for Easter Ham, Green Bean Bundles, and, of course, Cracklin' Cornbread -- to summer's Fish Frys, fall's Tailgate Parties, and winter's In Celebration of Soul, honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.

Recounted in Owens's delightful and hilarious voice, the family legends accompanying each of these menus leap off the page. We meet Uncle Kelly, the Prince of the Funny Funeral Story, who has family and friends howling with laughter at otherwise solemn occasions. We spend a morning with Janis and her friends at a Christmas Cookie Brunch as they bake delectable gifts for everyone on their holiday lists. And Janis's own father donates his famous fundamentalist biscuit recipe; truly a foretaste of glory divine.

The Cracker Kitchen is a charming, irresistible celebration of family, storytelling, and good old-fashioned eating sure to appeal to anyone with an appreciation of Americana. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Granny B
Most of the recipes are simply good old fashioned ways to cook simple dishes, but it also includes the Lane Cake, a recipe that is hard to find and was a thing of pride on any southern table, particularly at Easter. The best part of the book are the stories. There is a little cracker in each of us, and if not, then we are sure to count one among our acquaintances. I found the book a delightful read.

5-0 out of 5 stars love it
My sister loves this book.It is full of lots of recipes that her nother in law had told her about but couldn't find anymore. We usually don't bother with recipe books, because it is all online, but not many of these, you can't get them online. This book is also a good read with lots of stories, so it is a great educational book too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tasty and humorous
Tasty recipes and humorous stories. I had to have this book because this was the first time in print that I have read about the Christmas custom that my family practices by saying "Christmas Eve gift" to everybody as the first greeting of the day. The best recipe for sausage balls. Got lots of compliments on them.

5-0 out of 5 stars for myself...and what a surprise!
The forward by Pat Conroy is very special, but just reading the history and stories behind the recipe sections were so amusing and entertaining...my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed reading them aloud to each other . . . brought back memories of Charleston AND Florida....I liked it so much that I ordered another copy for a friend who lives in Beaufort, SC

5-0 out of 5 stars I want more!
I found this by accident, really, because I noticed that Pat Conroy had written a lengthy foreward and I would order a uses car ad if it was written by Conroy. Now I can add Janis Owens to that short list of have-to-have authors.Since reading this book I read then ordered her other books (My Brother Michael, Myra Sims and The Schooling of Claybird Catts) and am so disappointed there aren't more.I just ordered another copy of Cracker Kitchen to send to my daughter in Florida.Check out her website;your'e going to love her.

Product Description
This retrospective volume places Jack Leigh in the company of other documentary giants such as Walker Evans and Dorothea Lang. While technology and urban sprawl have transformed much of our country in the last half of the twentieth century, Jack Leigh has been quietly documenting the people and the landscape of the Southeastern coast, a region steeped in history and tradition. The Land I'm Bound To is the photographer's tribute to the richly diverse culture of his native region. His subjects range from solitary oystermen working the fog-shrouded salt marshes of South Carolina to shrimp fishermen at sea to the swamps and marsh flats along Georgia's Ogeechee River, as well as the massive cranes and freighters of Savannah's busy port. Here, Leigh is both inclusive and expansive, offering some of his most memorable images as well as recent work that synthesizes the beauty and emotional grip the South has on many of us. Foreword by Pat Conroy. 200 duotone photographs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Treasure
Anyone who has visited or even just read about the Southeastern coast will be drawn in and held spellbound by Jack Leigh's photographs. The emotion and connection that Mr. Leigh feels for his home comes flooding out of the pages in the form of places, people and light.

I have had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Leigh twice.Once 5 years ago when my husband and I stumbled on his gallery, and again when I brought my mother back to Savannah for the first time in 70 years. Both times Mr. Leigh was not only gracious but full of the stories about each one of his masterpieces. He is for real, folks! It is easy to see how he forms the relationships that produce his photographs. Having seen many of the original pieces in Mr. Leigh's gallery, I can atest to the quality of the printing and reproduction.Care was taken with this book.

One final word, pay particular attention to the work entitled "Cold Mellons."It is not only my favorite, but Mr. Leigh's first photograph. There is a whole story about how that piece almost didn't survive developing. Some things are just meant to be.
