5-0 out of 5 stars Swope's Ridge
Great suspenseful book! LOVED IT! Can't wait for more Lije Evans mysteries.Very well written.Being from Arkansas I loved that it was set in rural Arkansas.I could just see the events playing out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellen Sequel
"Swope's Ridge" was written by Ace Collins and is the second in the Lije Evans Mysteries series. The first book, Farraday Road was a very good read and I was excited to receive the sequel to review as well. Lije continues the search for the cause and perpetrators of his wife's murder. He now knows that it is connected to the property he owns, but he doesn't know much more than that. His search takes him back to World War II and outside of his own country. At the same time, he is working on a case defending a man accused of a terrible crime for a terrible reason. Will he find the answers he is looking for? Will another innocent man face the death penalty?

As I said, the first book was well written and the sequel is the same. It took some turns I did not expect. Some of the historical occurrences were intriguing as well. I thought that perhaps they were created by Collins, but later learned they are based on fact! For someone who has read quite a bit about WWII, this was exciting. I was satisfied with the ending, as much as someone can be who is anxiously awaiting the next book in the series. As far as I know, there is not one in the works as Collins is working on other projects. Still, I highly recommend this book and its prequal as well written and highly entertaining.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slow starting but well worth the read
Swope's Ridge, by Ace Collins, is second in the Lije Evan Mysteries series, following closely on the end of Farraday Road. It opens, rather like many TV series, with a "Previously in the Lije Evans Mysteries Series" page which sets a scene for what must surely have been a cliff-hanger ending in book one (though, not having read it, I'm uncertain whether the fateful shot rang out before or after the last page was turned). I felt slightly uncomfortable starting to read in the middle of a story, though the first scene, where an Arab American is arrested as a terrorist, certainly grabbed my attention, turning it well away from any thoughts of what I might have missed.

Chapter ten brings the reader back to the fate of the erstwhile terrorist, now in jail awaiting execution, and at this point in the book I found myself hooked. While I, and the characters, would have liked to believe in Omar's innocence, the evidence certainly seemed compelling. But leads are followed and the reader becomes suspicious of the truth just as Lije and his colleagues make their guesses. The racial profiling and easily excited fears of post 9-11 are well-depicted, with citizens and newspapers rallying against the lawyer who might dare "defend" a convicted terrorist. Characters from as far apart as Britain, Germany, Mexico and the Middle East bring their own thoughts to bear, and the story ends in a race against time to save far more lives than one.

There's a thread of faith in this book that's nicely done, and very wisely not overdone. The reader is invited to question the characters' beliefs and motivations, but the author never threatens to preach. I found the story surprisingly satisfying, and despite my initial misgivings will hope to read Farraday Road as well some day. Lije Evans and friends are an interesting and enterprising group to read about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy Both Books!
I just finished two of the best suspense, murder mystery books I have read in a long time! Farraday Road and Swope's Ridge by Ace Collins. Both books combine a modern murder mystery with historic events like World War 2 and September 11th. I received these books to review awhile ago and didn't realize they were a set. I started Farraday Road while I was in the hospital waiting for Lincoln to recover from RSV. This is one of those books you can't put down, and I finished it at 2 in the morning. I loved the story in Farraday Road, but was frustrated with the ending. . . . until I realized I had a 2nd book! You will want to buy both books because I guarantee that once you finish Farraday Road, you'll want to keep going!

Swope's Ridge was just as engaging and well-written, and I ended up staying up late to finish that one as well. Another wonderful thing about these books is that they are completely clean and free of the junk often found in mystery novels!

These books as a set are fabulous and I think they would make a great movie someday, especially if you like ones like "National Treasure."Buy both and you won't be disappointed, buy one and you'll be wanting more.

2-0 out of 5 stars Shallow characters and nearly non-existent spiritual component
Farraday Road was a let-down to me.Shallow characters and a nearly non-existent spiritual component in this "Christian" fiction book were at least bolstered by an exciting plot. Swope's Ridge, sadly, did not leave me with a drastically better opinion.

Plot Line
I enjoyed Farraday Road's plot line, as I mentioned. It was fast-paced, action packed, and unpredictable. While Swope's Ridge was also a fast-paced and unpredictable tale, I found the plot so complex as to be ridiculous. There were amazing amounts of "accidental" discoveries of facts whole states and continents away from the main characters that somehow would make their way together. This included a random purchase on ebay, found by the seller mistyping a word and therefore ending in the main character's search, which provided a major clue.I found it laughable and not believable whatsoever!I admire Collins' creativity in spinning this complex and multi-faceted tale... but I just couldn't quite swallow it as realistic.

Character Development
One of my main complaints about Farraday Road was character development, or lack thereof.I can actually quote from that review here: "I was underwhelmed by the character development - after spending almost 400 pages with the main characters, I did not find them compelling or feel attached to them."Ditto.

With only one exception (a blind woman who I found to be believable and appealing), the rest of the characters fell flat.I didn't mourn the demise of those who had an untimely end, I didn't celebrate the victories of those who prevailed.Characters seemed more like pawns to make the super-intricate plot play out.

Spiritual Component
Once again, I can quote from the review for Farraday Road:
"While I don't expect every piece of Christian fiction to have a pat overview of the gospel and basic theology, Collins has presented very "churchy" characters who appear to have been transformed more by "learning to love themselves" than by a relationship with God. If I had picked this book out of the secular mysteries at the local library, I would have appreciated it for being free of bad language or scenes that I wish weren't burned in my imagination. Since it came in a box of Christian books from Zondervan, however, I found it shallow and void of real truth and substance."

I will give Collins this: there were several pastors mentioned, the main character gives some money to a missionary, and there is a scene with several characters sitting in a church service. But honestly, I have read completely secular novels which present a more accurate view of saving faith in Christ than this does.I wouldn't even really call it "Christian Fiction."It's just clean and a little churchy. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but far from scholarly
Hard to say where the author got his information, since he doesn't bother with a bibliography, but he would have benefitted from reading actual scholarship on calendar customs rather than reproducing such popular claptrap as the so-called Celtic Tree Calendar and the notion of a goddess named Easter/Eostre--speculation by Bede more than verified tradition. To his credit, the author embraces traditional non-Christian customs of the seasons such as eggs and bunnies by saying they are appropriate celebrations of renewal, helping the celebrants to the "true" message of the Resurrection.A quibbler might point out that the Resurrection itself can be seen as merely symbolic of Spring renewal, just like any of these other customs, but Collins's way does allow for the protection of such secular traditions. He appears to be on firmer ground with his chapters on hymns, and provides a number of interesting stories of their origins. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I loved Farraday Road! The ending was a cliffhanger of sorts, but I had already requested Swope's Ridge (the sequel) from my library, so it didn't bother me. I can't wait to see what else Ace Collins can come up with!
One other note: Swope's Ridge is the completion of the mystery, so no need to worry about further cliffhangers. =D

2-0 out of 5 stars It Doesn't END!
I had the chance to read another suspense-filled book!Farraday Road is the location of where Lije Evans's wife is murdered, and the first, of many, attempt on his life is taken. The plot of this book has many twists, while Lije attempts to figure out the mystery behind his wife's death and why he is still targeted.

While the suspense in this book was good, I can't say I loved it.This is a Christian novel, yet there is profanity in it.I feel that profanity has no place in a Christian novel.I only noticed one word (d***).One more concern with the language is how the characters used God's name inappropriately."My Lord, Curtis thought, they were watching a murder."

Despite the language, author Ace Collins had me riveted.I was thoroughly disappointed when there were just a few pages left, and I knew the mysteries were not all going to be solved in this book.I was even more disappointed when the final words of the book were "to be continued..."I knew Farraday Road was part of a series, but this book just didn't "end".I need some ends tied up by the end of a book, and it just didn't happen here.

So though I really enjoyed the plot and suspense in Farraday Road, it left too much to be desired, in my opinion, to call this a great book.

Thank you, Zondervan, for providing me with a review copy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put It Down
I did have to put it down to feed my children, unfortunately; but I still got it all read in one day. What was it?Farraday Road by Ace Collins! The first half is very similar to a cozy mystery, but the second half started to evolve into a regular mystery.I think guy authors just can't keep their mysteries local.Seems like they have to expand them into a worldwide thing.

I was not able to predict what was going to happen, but I was not thrown out of whack by extremely complicated twists and turns. Both a plus for me.

I was introduced to the deputy first. In one chapter the author managed to let us know about her, her family, life, and beliefs. So when she went missing it was somebody I cared about.Lije Evan's character is revealed a bit slower, but in a good way.I love the humor of Janie who is dropped into the story 3/4 of the way through.

There is detective work, deception, train history, and folk lore.It all went together well.Bad news:The book does not end.I really thought it was going to have a bit more of a resolution.Good news:The next one is already out.Swope's Ridge (Lije Evans Mysteries) is available for purchase!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Novel
I couldn't put it down, only for sleep intervals.I know some of the Arkansas areas, have family in Mountain View, and I thoroughly enjoyed the scenery as well as the ongoing romance and mystery.I immediately ordered the second in the series and now I'm saving it so I can look forward to a wonderful time reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Faraday Road

2-0 out of 5 stars Light weight
Not much here to comment on. It appears that very little research was done on these Christmas traditions to write the book, or if there was, the author chose not to let the readers in on it. It book is small and cheaply made.

This is actually the second time I've bought this book. I enjoyed it so much, I ordered a copy for my sister as a Christmas gift. She loved it, too!

1-0 out of 5 stars Do some research!
I really wonder what kind of research Mr. Collins did.

Granted the only selection that I read had to do with the Nutcracker.

I have a feeling that Mr. Collins never read E.T.A. Hoffman's (sic) original story, (it was Hoffmann, not Hoffman as is indicated by Mr. Collins), even though Mr. Collins recounts it. All in all, he makes some very erroneous comments about that story.

For the last 30 years or so, it has been a family tradition to read Hoffmann's story in English and in German during the month of December. We use "E.T.A. Hoffmann Nutcracker," Pictures by Maurice Sendak, Translation by Ralph Manheim, Crown Publishers, Inc., 1984, for the English version. For the German, we use "E.T.A. Hoffmann Werke, Zweiter Band," Insel Verlag, 1967. (Manheim did a wonderful job with the translation and, of course, Sendak did outstanding work with the illustrations.)

Mr. Collins writes, "Marie was a child who lived in a home devoid of love." Nonsense.

Then Mr. Collins writes of a "fairy tale that would hardly appeal to anyone except the most cynical of readers." Again, nonsense: the story ends with a "happy ever after" note.

Most of Mr. Collins other comments are stuff and nonsense, stuff and nonsense.

I didn't bother to read any of the other selections.

I would have rated this book with a "no star" rating, but it wouldn't let me.... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Women, Extraordinary Faith

Worthy of using as a devotional book.
Worthy of a textbook for a woman's Bible study.
Worthy of a reminder to us as to the value of women in the Kingdom of God.
Worthy of encouraging everyone to make good use of the gifts they have received in the Kingdom of God.
Worthy of recalling the power of God unleashed when people give themselves over to him.

Ace Collins has chosen 19 outstanding women to illustrate his points. It is a refreshing set of vignettes from modern church history in regard to the work of women. Some of these women gave from godly homes filled with prayer and devotion to God. They then lived out their lives at a higher level than they had experienced at home. Others abandoned position and fortune to accomplish what they recognized as a God-given call to ministry. Many like Catherine Booth recognized a serious social need and stepped outside the box to meet that need. One of these women is the founder of the Girl Scouts. Two giants of the faith included by Collins are Catherine Booth and Mother Teresa.

Collins challenges us to think of the value of women in the church in all of history. Many who read this review will relate to mothers, grandmothers, wives, and other godly women who helped mold them into the person they are today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stories behind the hymns
Wonderful little book, a joy to read about all the great hymns.

1-0 out of 5 stars Doubts about the research of the book
In scanning the book's index, I was surprised that there was no reference to Fred Waring and his musical organization, the Pennsylvanians, and their relationship with "Battle Hymn of the Republic."Having been a member of the Pennsylvanians, I know for a fact that it was Waring and his choral arranger Roy Ringwald who are responsible for re-discovering this obscure Civil War hymn and featuring it on one of their Chesterfield Pleasure Time broadcasts in the early 1940's.Singlehandedly, Waring brought this stirring patriotic anthem to the public consciousness, and from that point on he featured "Battle Hymn" as the closing song in all of his live concerts.Yet, there is no hint that these accounts are even mentioned in the book, which makes me doubt the research done by the author.I will pass on purchasing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Useful
The stories are accurate and interesting. There is no sheet music and I do not miss it.I have found the stories useful as fodder for comments I make when playing music for audiences. There are several other similar books, all good, but I sure wish there were a lot more by this author. There is one about Christmas music, but two are still not enough. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Christmas stories
Reviewed by Olivera Baumgartner-Jackson for Reader Views (10/07)

One of the toughest challenges for me after moving to the South was - and still is - getting in the mood for Christmas. When one grew up with snow on the ground and chestnuts roasting, it just isn't easy to get used to palm trees and temperatures in the 80s when Christmas comes around. That said, the challenge has gotten bigger in the past years and all of a sudden I stopped looking forward to the holidays. Nothing seemed right any longer, until I discovered the wonderful boxed set of "Stories Behind Christmas," written by Ace Collins.

The set consists of three wonderful collections of stories, two of which deal with the songs of Christmas and one which deals with the traditions of Christmas. Written in a fluid, easy to follow style, the stories touch on 26 traditions and a total of 62 songs, connected to Christmas. The attention to detail, as well as the obviously huge amount of research that went into them, make for pleasant, uplifting reading. With selections as diverse as Silent Night, Ave Maria, Auld Lang Syne, The Little Drummer Boy, I'll Be Home for Christmas, Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer, White Christmas and more you'll be able to find many of your favorites and learn a lot of surprising facts about them. The majority of the chapters also include the words of the songs, and if you are anything like me, they will be a useful tool to finally decipher some of the more difficult lines.

While I found both Stories Behind the Best-Loved Songs of Christmas and More Stories Behind the Best-Loved Songs of Christmas utterly delightful and charming, it was the Stories Behind the Great Traditions of Christmas that stole my heart. Ace Collins managed to include all of my favorites, from holly and mistletoe to nativity scenes and Nutcracker ballet, and definitely not forgetting candy canes, ornaments, stockings, gifts and lights. Any and every question about the symbols and traditions of Christmas that you've ever had - and maybe didn't even realize you had it - is answered in this book. Reading the wonderful vignettes behind each of them put me in the Christmas mood early this year and I have no doubt the spirit will stay around.

This set would make a wonderful Christmas gift, especially for people with children or anybody with a curious mind. Those books are appropriate for most any age and should find their way to the bookshelves of all who celebrate Christmas. And if you are one of those, who - like me - misses a White Christmas, read a couple of stories in "Stories Behind Christmas" and I bet you will see a million tiny crystals sparkling all around you.

25 Days, 26 Ways is a short, 190 page, daily guide to help you take a new, fresh look at Christmas. Do you dread the Christmas season? Is it all about who spends the most money or gets the most toys? Should it be? As Christians, we know the focus should be on Jesus Christ. This guide helps you do just that, by taking one day at a time and focusing on that topic.

I believe everyone can learn something new by reading this book. For instance, do you know what Advent actually means? Do you know what its purpose was in the 6th century? What about the song, "The Twelve Days of Christmas"? Do you know what the lyrics originally meant? I learned quite a lot from this little book. Ace Collins used historical stories, scriptural truths, and contemporary anecdotes to help show you how to have a happy holiday.

I am looking forward to having a more Christ centered Christmas this year and utilizing the information I learned from this book.

I received this book for free in exchange for my honest review.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Any Time of Year
"25 Days, 26 Ways" is written by Ace Collins (who writes the Lije Evans Mysteries I like SO much). He explores 26 ways to "make this your best Christmas ever" in a daily devotional fashion. Obviously, minds are thinking spring, Easter, and looking ahead to summer, but believe me, NOW is the time to read this book. First, you can implement some of these practices at any time. Second, some of them you may want to think over and plan for to do during the holiday season. Some of the suggestions center on family while others will make you step outside of your comfort zone into the big world.
I enjoyed reading this book and know I will come back to it again for ideas. Don't mistake me either, this isn't just a little instruction book on what to do, but he also talks about why. It is quite thought provoking and as I said, it's good to be thinking about these things year round. We definitely should not isolate such things to one or two months of the year. If you get the chance, I highly recommend "25 Days, 26 Ways."

2-0 out of 5 stars Shallow and scattered
I have a tension with Christmas. I absolutely love it, and yet sometimes feel like we're missing the point. Tradition is not bad, but even well-intentioned and meaningful traditions can also become idols.

So, when I received 25 Days, 26 Ways to Make This Your Best Christmas Ever to review, I was skeptical but hoping for the best. The book is written in short chapters that are intended to be read one at a time from December 1st through the 25th. This is not a devotional, but rather a light "reflective reading" book from a Christian perspective.

I have to say, as I began reading this little book my hopes were lifting. I really enjoyed reading Ace Collins' accounts of the historical "Good King Wenceslas" [I never knew he was a real person!], the church's historical observance of advent, the way Christian missionaries in years long ago used mistletoe and evergreen trees to share the gospel, the roots of some of our most beloved Christmas carols, and Martin Luther being the first to add candles to the Christmas tree to symbolize Jesus as the Light of the World. Collins' historical tidbits really did add a new layer of understanding and appreciation to Christmas traditions for me. I also appreciated the emphasis he rightly placed on giving and generosity, and that we should be seeking to emulate the love and heart of Christ.

BUT. I found Collins' approach to refocusing on the meaning of the season to be shallow and scattered. His approach to lessening stress during the holidays seems to be "do more and be happy about it." I felt like my hand was being slapped [albeit jovially] for not being a person who typically sends Christmas cards - and in fact, that I should be picking out individual cards that reflect the tastes of each friend and family member I send them to. I should pick out more gifts more thoughtfully. I should put up more lights more carefully. I should bake more cookies and give them away. I should take more pictures. Oh, and if I'm finding myself too rushed I should slow down and ride my bike. If I feel stressed about these things I should hum a Christmas carol and "turn my frown upside down."

No matter how meaningful the roots of our Christmas traditions, I still contend that those very traditions can become idols that can overtake our focus on Christ. They aren't bad - Christmas cards, lights, decorations, music, shopping, baking... all are enjoyable and fun and can create lovely memories. But perhaps instead of doing more and feeling guilty about not embracing a Clever-family Christmas, we should consider doing less. Perhaps we need to free ourselves a bit from the guilt of all of the "must-do" items on our agendas this time of year that really don't matter in the lens of eternity.

In short, if you're looking for a light and mildly interesting read about Christmas traditions, this might be what you're looking for. Just please take it with a grain of salt and banish the guilt of feeling that you must do more.

Consider learning about traditions, carefully choose what you will do, and do less... with more purpose. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas Presents
I read Ace Collins book, and bought a few copies for Christmas gifts this year.I plan on purchasing more copies for Christmas gifts in 2010.This book is a "keeper" to read each day in December.I too go to Church regularly and read my Bible, but there are many traditions that I wasn't aware of as to why we participate in them. And, now I know.Excellent book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Read!
I had the opportunity to review this book just in time for the Christmas holidays. Not only that but, I was able to begin during the first week of Advent. Each day as I opened to that particular day's chapter I learned things like what Advent really is, the history behind the different things we associate with Christmas, and ways to readjust the way you look at Christmas from here on out.

Ace Collins put a lot of thought into writing this book. I can tell it really came from the heart. In it he also shares ways to make the holidays a more meaningful time to spend with those you love as well as some of his family favorites recipes. There were many things in the book I already knew and other things I didn't know. While it's a great book to learn a new thing or two, I can't agree with everything he suggests.

His thoughts of why we should not do away with certain traditional customs/beliefs is not fit for everyone. The way they lived back then, their language, and what they understood about God was limited. Just because something sounds like a good thing or fun doesn't mean it's right. In this time knowledge and understanding has increased and many Christians today have strong convictions from God of why they should celebrate different. The things of the past held a meaning for that time and we must move forward with what God is showing us in our time. Each family must pray about these things and do what they believe is right for their family and the lives of others they touch. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and entertaining.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.It was fascinating to read the stories behind many of our best-loved carols and popular Christmas songs. The author recites his stories with a Christian perspective, but I feel that this enhances the stories rather than detracts from them.

I feel it has deepened my understanding and appreciation of Christmas and revealed to me, the contributions of the men and women behind this music.

How each one of them added something special and unique to our celebrations of Christmas.

2-0 out of 5 stars tartstrong end as an etiquette advise book
I loved the idea of this book and bought it with great hopes. It started off strong but then just kind of degraded into a Ms Manners kind of thing. It was boring, over simplistic and not a whole lot more than common sense advise that we should already know and practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, Actionable Advice
Do you ever think about the impact of the words you speak each day? How about the words you think? What do you say to yourself when you drop something and make a big mess? Are you nicer to a visitor who does the same thing?

This book addresses the impact of language on our lives and the lives of those we come in contact with. We can't control what others say to us, but we can control what we say to them and how often we repeat their words in our heads. By addressing topics such as self talk, saying thanks, paying attention, apologizing, and even talking when we don't know what to say, Ace Collins gives practical advice and specific actions we can take to improve the world one word at a time.

This is definitely a book worth reading -- and soon! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some interesting tidbits here and there but only an average read
I'm going to assume that you have more than a passing interest in country music or you wouldn't be reading this, so I'll make this simple. Each of the 100 songs that Collins has chosen gets a writeup of about 2-3 pages each. Collins' emphasis is on the songs themselves, so he doesn't spend as much time talking about the artists who recorded them as the songsmiths who came up with them (unless they're one and the same, as in Charlie Daniels' case for "The Devil Went Down to Georgia").

PROS:
Lots of little-known tidbits for all but dyed in the wool country fanatics such as Vernon Dalhart, the first country superstar, was actually opera singer Marion Slaughter. Did you realize "I'm Thinking Tonight of my Blue Eyes" (1929),"The Great Speckled Bird" (1938) ,"The Wild Side of Life" (1952), and "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky-Tonk Angels" (1952) are all based around the same music? Did you know "Orange Blossom Special" is more or less an ad?

CONS:
In attempting to include some "modern songs", Collins has written about tunes of dubious "all-time greatest" value:
Alabama's "Tennessee River" and Hank Jr's "Are You Ready for Some Football?" are two of the most glaring examples.

He also tends to include songs for what he feels is their "importance" in breaking new ground, which may or may not coincide with their relative worth as country classics. Barbara Mandrell may have bust a taboo for women singing "cheating" songs with 1973 hit "Midnight Oil" as Collins says but that doesn't mean it's legitimately one of the 100 best country songs EVER penned.

I would also say the inclusion of Jerry Lee Lewis' "Great Balls of Fire" and the Everly Brothers' "Bye Bye Love" are suspect too. They may be great SONGS but they're not great COUNTRY songs, regardless of the Everlys' occasional country cuts (on other songs) and the Killer's later turn to twang after his marriage to Myra sabotaged his rock career.

BOTTOM LINE:
It's good for a one time read but probably not one you'll feel a compelling need to own.

2-0 out of 5 stars Country Music's Greatest Songs?
Though the songs may not be the 100 I would have chosen, I love this little book. The stories behind them are well-written, with background on both the writer and the original performer(s). The only problem I can see is that there are only 100! Here's hoping Mr. Collins produces a second volume, because the first is great. ... Read more
