Product Description
Near the end of her classic wartime account, Susie King Taylor writes, "there are many people who do not know what some of the colored women did during the war." For her own part, Taylor spent four years without pay or formal training nursing sick and wounded members of a black regiment of Union soldiers. In addition, she worked as a camp cook, laundress, and teacher. Written from a perspective unique in the literature of the Civil War, Reminiscences of My Life in Camp not only chronicles daily life on the battlefront but also records interactions between blacks and whites, men and women, and Northerners and Southerners during and after the war.

Taylor tells of being born into slavery and of learning, in secret, to read and write. She describes maturing under her wartime responsibilities and traveling with the troops in South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. After the war, Taylor dedicated herself to improving the lives of black Southerners and black Union Army veterans. The final chapters of Reminiscences are filled with depictions of the racism to which these efforts often exposed her.

This volume reproduces the text of the original 1902 edition. Catherine Clinton's new introduction provides historical context for the events that form the backdrop of Taylor's memoir, as well as for the problems of race and gender it illuminates.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money. Narrative lacks detail and emotion
I am very interested in the Civil War from a female perspective so I decided to get this book. I have to say I was very disappointed with it.

Ms. Catherine Clinton give an introduction which is good and informative.

When comparing this to other narratives I have read about the war this one falls flat. Ms. Taylor's narrative is lacking detail and emotion. I thought I would get a better understanding about life in camp, but that was not the case. For instance Ms. Taylor writes about fleas in her tent and how she barely slept. That's great, but how did that make her feel? Did she hate camp life? Did she question what she was doing there? And to be perfectly honest I'm not quite sure what her role was. On St. Simon's Island she was teaching children but when she got to Camp Saxton I have no idea what she did. It seemed like she was wandering around with the troops. Did she cook? Clean? ???

From page 52 on Ms. Taylor explains what her life was like after the Civil War. So the pages of her explaining what life was like in camp are rather slim. With Catherine Clinton's introduction the reader only gets 52 pages of camp life(minus the first two chapters on her ancestors and childhood). This book is not 136 pages of a woman's experience during the Civil War.

Overall this was a great disappointment. I was hoping to read an engaging account of a black woman's experience but instead Ms. Taylor's explanation of the war was dry and lacked emotion. One thing I enjoyed about this book was how she observed race relations. I thought that was interesting and was the books one saving grace. ... Read more

Product Description

In July 1863, a significantbattle in the Civil War was fought. Sergeant William H. Carney, an officer of the newly formed Massachusetts Fifty-fourth Regiment -- comprised entirely of African Americans -- led his soldiers over the ramparts of Fort Wagner, where Union soldiers charged the Confederates. As the soldiers fought, they gained strength from the stars and stripes of the American flag, Old Glory. It was Carney's vow to never let Old Glory touch the ground, and despite several gunshot wounds, he was able to rescue the flag from the fallen bearer. Carney held the flag high as a symbol that his regiment would never submit to the Confederacy. The battle of Fort Wagner decimated the Fifty-fourth Regiment, but Carney's heroism that night inspired all who survived.

Catherine Clinton's historically precise text paired with Shane Evans's rich illustrations creates a remarkable account of one of the most memorable battles in Civil War history.

This book is the story about the Massachusetts 54th Regiment during the Civil War, which was all African American. This book appears to be designed for early elementary students, but the nature of the artwork would be appealing to older students, including English language learners. This perspective story could be an excellent way to engage students to talk about the Civil War, ethnicity, bigotry, exclusion, and tough diversity issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Real Flag Waver
A stirring, patriotic and yet perhaps little known story of a Civil War battle.I found it too mature for younger than 7-year olds, but with some background information it could be read to them effectively. The 2nd graders I read to were very interested but puzzled when they found the battle had been lost. They cheered up to see the actual photo of the hero and to hear the war was eventually won. Third to sixth graders will enjoy reading it for themselves and may be encouraged to seek out more Civil War history. ... Read more

Product Description

Civil War Stories is Catherine Clinton's fresh look at some everyday and extraordinary people whose lives were forever transformed by the impact of war. Her multifaceted perspective includes the stories of sisters, children, and friends torn apart by the crisis of Confederate independence, as well as those to whom silence was a way to "keep the peace," although true peace would never again be restored.

Two sisters, one a staunch defender of the Union, the other a passionate advocate of the rebel cause, are traumatized by the divide the Civil War imposes. Thousands of orphans, scattered from Maine to New Orleans, learn the hard lessons of the war at an early age. Clinton urges us to reconsider this fatherless generation's devastating losses. The war's outcome was acrimoniously contested after Appomattox. The story of two South Carolina women, one black and one white, illuminates that fires of bitterness raged even after surrender.

Clinton suggests those on opposing sides sought to vindicate their losses and assert their rights by taking up the pen. The histories and memoirs she contrasts, the lives she reconstructs, and the stories she highlights provide appreciation of the cultural impact of the American Civil War, for those who endured it and for those of us who continue to be fascinated by its legacy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rushed Effort
This book title seems to imply that the book will be about women/children being impacted by the civil war....what it really is, is a book about women's efforts for the South during the Civil war with a few mentions of children being left behind as orphans. When it did mention the children becoming orphans it was as a passing glance or about how one of these women would try to help find their parents or how someone started an orphanage.I was looking for a book that would give me the human side of the orphans life.Someone to tell their side of the story with the uncertaninty and chilling conditions that some of them must have lived.

That being said, this book is rich in the human history of the civil war.It does tell about some very real women who helped during the war, but most of their problems which the books seems to highlight started long before the civil war even started.I did enjoy learning about these women and it did make the civil war more peronsal....but this book is trying to be something it is not.

1-0 out of 5 stars Catherine Clinton missed something...the Civil War!
This story, while interesting from a social historian perspective, really has nothing to do with what the title implies. This story of a family divided really has nothing to do with the American Civil War.The family Clinton writes about is supposedly torn apart by the war, but that is simply not the case.Long before the war started, the family was split because the father and mother were incompatible.Though when the war started, the family was split in half, mother and one daughter living in the north while father and the other daughter lived in the south, the split occurred long before the war, and continued long afterwards.Clinton has fallen, here, into the trap that many new social historians have, that is "losing" the Civil War. It is true that these three stories occurred during the Civil War, but they cannot be rightly called "Civil War Stories".It is analougus to writing a book about the Kitty Genovese murder and calling it a Vietnam story. On top of it, Clinton is not a good writer, and the book is full of grammatical errors and incoherent sentences. Also, her writing style is not very good, and she could stand to take a few more classes in english, and history for that matter, as she gets some facts terribly wrong.I do not reccommend this book for anyone expecting a social history of women in the Civil War because it is not the case. While the story itself may be interesting to some, it does not deserve the title "Civil War Stories" and should not be presented as such.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the Civil War buff.

In 1773, Phillis Wheatley published a book of poetry. It was a great accomplishment that made her very famous.
Only a year before, Phillis had had to take a test to prove that she was the actual author of these poems, because Phillis Wheatley was a slave.
Who would believe that an African girl could be the author of such poetry?
Phillis did! She believed in herself, and took every opportunity she could to make her life better. She believed in the power of her words, and her writing to prove her talent, and used the power of words to change a life.

From the first known African American poet, Lucy Terry, to recent poet laureate Rita Dove, I, TOO, SING AMERICA captures the enormous talent and passion of black writers. This powerful and diverse, this unique collection spans three centuries of poetry in America as poets bare their souls, speak their minds, trace their roots, and proclaim their dreams in the thirty-six poems compiled here. The voices of Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, W. E. B. Dubois, and Gwendolyn Brooks, among others, create an energetic blend of tone and tempo, ardor and awe. From lamentations to celebrations, these poems reveal the ironies of black America, juxtaposing themes of resistance and reconciliation, hope and despair. Each poem is further illuminated with notes, a brief biography of the poet, and stunning visual interpretations. 5-0 out of 5 stars I, Too Sing America
Not only does this book give you a variety of African-American poets,it also supplies you with a brief background of each author. This gives you some of the ingredients it took to make each poem. There are thirty-six poems total. Of the twenty-five poets, Clinton,(author), selects more than one piece from some of them. For those who only know of a few poets, this book allows you to learn about others.
The illustrator (Stephen Alcorn)Uses lots of color to express the feelings of the poem. These are the type of pictures that you must look at with a keen eye. A lot of symbolism is used in his drawings. You can get a general idea of the poem by looking at the pictures. To check this book out would be an injustice. this is a must buy book. Everyones library should consist of this poetic history.

Product Description
The Women's War in the South recounts the manner in which women experienced the Civil War and the changes it brought about in their lives. Filled with excerpts from the letters, books, diaries, and postwar writings the women left behind, it reveals the other side of the war--the woman's war. The editors include first-person accounts of women running farms, buying and selling goods, working outside the home, serving as spies, and even participating in combat in disguise.

Southern women had particularly strong feelings about this war because, alone and unarmed, they often confronted invading Yankees face-to-face. For these women the conflict meant coping with severe shortages and extreme sacrifices. The end result for many women, however, was death by disease, starvation, and the fighting that frequently crossed the threshold and entered their homes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection of Southern homefront stories
This great book tells the often overlooked women's stories from the American Civil War. Even more specific, it focuses entirely on Southern women from that era, who wrote vivid descriptions of life on the homefront during the bloodiest war in American history. From brave spies like Rose Greenhow to nurses like Emily Mason, their stories are all collected here. There's also a chapter on Loreta Velazquez, a Cuban woman who disguised herself as a man "Lieut. Harry T, Buford" and served as a courier for (Confederate) General Barnard Bee during the Battle of Bull Run on July 21, 1861! After the battle she even asked General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson for a promotion! There are also stories about women during the sieges of Vicksburg and Charleston as well as the infamous Richmond "Bread Riot" in 1863 (not a proud moment for the Southern belles!). There's a short but interesting section on "Stonewall" Jackson's widow, Mary Anna Morrison. Southern women were very passionate about "the Cause" and even in the war's final months many still hoped for a Confederate victory. Without a doubt, they made a huge impact on the morale of the Confederate troops as well as the war effort, with thousands working in factories and hospitals. During the first day of the Battle of Nashville on Dec. 15, 1864, Confederate and Union cavalry were fighting on the Belle Meade mansion's front yard, and throughout the fierce fighting Miss Selene Harding was seen standing on the front porch of the mansion, waving her handkerchief and urging the Southerners to defeat the "Yankees". This is just one example of the devotion felt by virtually all Southern women to the Confederacy. This book is well-written and well-organized, starting with a female witness to John Brown's Raid and ending with the trial of Mrs. Surratt (the Lincoln Assassination). This book is very helpful in understanding more about the Confederate "spirit" and is highly recommended to all Civil War buffs. ... Read more

Kapitel: Anthony Braxton, Catherine Clinton, Karl William Kapp, Martin Ostwald, W. W. Sawyer, Sigmund Neumann, Richard Wilbur, Bill Barron, Robert L. Benson. Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Anthony Braxton (born June 4, 1945) is an American composer, saxophonist, clarinettist, flautist, pianist, and philosopher. Braxton has released well over 100 albums since the 1960s. Among the array of instruments he plays are the flute; the sopranino, soprano, C-Melody, F alto, E-flat alto, baritone, bass, and contrabass saxophones; and the E-flat, B-flat, and contrabass clarinets. Critic Chris Kelsey writes that "Although Braxton exhibited a genuine - if highly idiosyncratic - ability to play older forms (influenced especially by saxophonists Warne Marsh, John Coltrane, Paul Desmond, and Eric Dolphy), he was never really accepted by the jazz establishment, due to his manifest infatuation with the practices of such non-jazz artists as John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Many of the mainstream's most popular musicians (Wynton Marsalis among them) insisted that Braxton's music was not jazz at all. Whatever one calls it, however, there is no questioning the originality of his vision; Anthony Braxton created music of enormous sophistication and passion that was unlike anything else that had come before it." Anthony Braxton playing a contrabass saxophoneEarly in his career, Braxton led a trio with violinist Leroy Jenkins and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith and was involved with The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, the "AACM", founded in Chicago, Braxton's birthplace. In 1968, Braxton recorded the double LP For Alto. There had been occasional unaccompanied saxophone recordings previously (notably Coleman Hawkins' "Picasso"), but For Alto was the first full-length album for unaccompanied saxophone. Product Description
Henry James called Fanny Kemble's autobiography "one of the most animated autobiographies in the language." Born into the first family of the British stage, Fanny Kemble was one of the most famous woman writers of the English-speaking world, a best-selling author on both sides of the Atlantic. In addition to her essays, poetry, plays, and a novel, Kemble published six works of memoir, eleven volumes in all, covering her life, which began in the first decade of the nineteenth century and ended in the last. Her autobiographical writings are compelling evidence of Kemble's wit and talent, and they also offer a dazzling overview of her transatlantic world. Kemble kept up a running commentary in letters and diaries on the great issues of her day. The selections here provide a narrative thread tracing her intellectual development-especially her views on women and slavery. She is famous for her identification with abolitionism, and many excerpts reveal her passionate views on the subject. The selections show a life full of personal tragedy as well as professional achievements. An elegant introduction provides a context for appreciating Kemble's remarkable life and achievements, and the excerpts from her journals allow her, once again, to speak for herself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Insight into Slavery
Fanny Kemble provides us with a unique and courageous account of the 'peculiar institution' that was thrust upon her by her marriage to Pierce Butler, the wealthy scion of a Southern plantation owner.
Already a celebrated actress when she came to America, Fanny was well-educated and accustomed to earning her own living when she married Pierce. It was only after traveling from Philadelphia to Butler Island, near Darien, Georgia, that she became aware of the full horror and degradation of slavery. She toured the plantation, helped to nurse the sick, did what she could to improve their conditions, and opened her door to all who dared to air their grievances, much to the dismay of her husband. Eventually, their disagreements on these points led to a divorce, and Fanny returned to Europe where she resumed her theatrical career.
This volume also contains Fanny's letters to friends and confidants that provide a valuable insight into the cultural climate in England as well as America for much of the 19th century.
These journals and letters are not only entertaining, but a must for any serious student of American history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Look into the mind of a powerful women
I must say, I have never seen insight so dignified on such a subject in all my years of book review. When I read this book, every page enlighten me with an overwhelming sensation of sadness, guilt, freedom and anger.Every one of my emotions were totally stimulated by this master piece of modern society.Regardless of the date in which Fanny published this book, it still leaves a gruesome reminder of the pure agony suffered from the hands of Prejudice and Hate.I have just finished watching the TV movie of Fanny's story, and I am absolutely blown away by the extreme emotional precision used in creating this film.Let this film and this book be a lasting reminder, to the youth of our age.It is important for the younger teenage generations of this new century, understand the facts of what had to be done, to win them the lives they have today.I rate this book 5 plus stars. It was amazing.:-) ~LiteratureLuver418thCentury... ~

4-0 out of 5 stars Fanny Kemble's Journals
I was attracted to this book after I saw the movie, Enslavement, basedon the life of Fanny Kemble who lived before, during and after the Civil War.This book uses exerpts from her letters and journalsto tell the story of her adult life, but it does not contain all of her written material. She published several journals, letter collectiions, and plays.Fanny was a remarkable woman, obviously much before her time. She was unusually independent and energenic, and her writing includes few of the steriotypestypical of the period. However, we are able to see how the customs ofsocietyrestricted her ability to act, especilly her efforts to help eliminate slavery and improve the life of her husband's slaves. Because of her popularity as an actress she was able to earn a living after divorcing her husband, but he had control over their children until they reached adulthood. This book gives unusual insight into the lifestyles and concerns of the period. It actually reads like a novel. ...
