My son is 10 months and he loves the touch and feel books so I thought that this would be perfect for him.I was disappointed to find that the paper that covers it was dissolving and peeling off from his chewing on it after only a few days.

In fact, with Scholastic's Teaching with Favorite Eric Carle Books, kids can build skills in writing, math, art, social studies, science, and more. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Aid to Homeschoolers and Other Teachers
I think that this book would be a marvelous tool for teachers and home educators. It is loaded with good, easy to implement, ideas on how to extend a `read' into more of a lesson.

For example, this book includes ideas on:

Vocabulary building games
Fun phonics lessons
Poems to share
Hands-on math
Science investigations
Interactive displays
Movement games
Art projects

for the following Eric Carle books:

The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Pancakes, Pancakes
Have You Seen My Cat?
The Mixed-Up Chameleon
The Grouchy Ladybug
The Tiny Seed
The Very Busy Spider
Papa, Please Get The Moon For Me
A House For Hermit Crab
Today Is Monday
The Very Lonely Firefly
The Very Clumsy Click Beetle

Since it is out of print (as soooo many GREAT books seem to be) I won't go on, but only say that you ought to try to track it down if you are interested in ideas of how to enlarge a reading of a book such as the Very Hungry Caterpillar into a lesson on counting, life cycles, change, nature and nutrition.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Favorite at our house!
My daughter (who is now 14) absolutely adored this book when she was little. Now we read it to my friend's 18 month & 4 year old girls and they too are in love with it.I can still recite the book and I love every page. The little ones are getting their own copy soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Kid Needs This Book
This is one of the best books I have ever seen for children. So glad it is available as a board book so the youngest of readers can enjoy! Consider buying this book along with another of Eric Carle's classic books to give as a baby shower gift, for a child's first birthday, or as a new arrival gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of his best
This book is one of his better ones- along with The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Brown Bear Brown Bear. The repitition of "She was very busy spinning her web" creates a rhythm to the story, the pictures of the animals on the farm are very beautiful and the ending is lovely.Yes- it's not a thrilling book but it is soothing and a great bedtime book because of its cadence and its culmination. My 13 month daughter has loved this one since being a few weeks old- she calms down and watches very intently and now is interested in touching the texture of the web in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Very Busy Spider
I have received and reviewed the book "The Very Busy Spider".
It is a very good book and nicely illustrated.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just OK
Review by Sherry North, Author, Because You Are My Baby

Eric Carle is a favorite in our house, but this is one of his weaker titles. The illustration of the spider spinning her web barely changes from one page to the next, and there's no clever twist that "makes" the book, like in A Very Hungry Caterpillar. After reading it to our son once, he never seemed interested in looking at it again - but he does ask for Carle's other books often.

Product Description
Generations of readers have grown up with Eric Carle's deceptively simple picture books, which combine entertaining stories, glorious cut-paper collages, and gentle lessons about a child's world. Here are seven of his stories collected in one handsome volume: "The Tiny Seed," "Pancakes, Pancakes!," "The Mountain That Loved A Bird," "Walter The Baker," "A House for Hermit Crab," "The Greedy Python," and "Rooster's Off to See the World." Dazzling collages of hand-painted tissue paper will entice young readers to become acquainted with numbers, the seasons, and the days of the week as they read. A tiny seed travels through fall, winter, spring, and summer looking for a place to grow into a flower. Jack gathers ingredients for pancakes and learns how to cook, flip, and finish them. A little bird brings a renewal of life and happiness to a lonely, barren mountain. Walter the baker must invent a tasty roll through which the rising sun can shine three times. Hermit Crab learns that in order to grow, one must be willing to move on. A python is so excessively greedy that is finally eats itself. And Rooster sets off to see the wide world in a day-long adventure. These seven stories, each representing the best of picture-book master Eric Carle, will excite the imaginations of children and encourage their curiousity about the world around them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Teaching Tool
I am an art teacher and this book is a simple yet thorough example of how Eric Carle produces his artwork. The tissue paper samples are a great hands-on visual. Wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eric Carle-style art instruction, with paper supplies!
Have you ever read an Eric Carle book to someone and marveled at his artwork? Now your child, or you, can do similar work!

This is not so much an instruction book on collage as it is an instruction book and supplies for artwork in the style of Eric Carle (which is collage, but in his own style). If you aren't familiar with his work, go to any library or bookstore and you will his books.Theyare very popular and have endured (his first books were written and illustrated in the 1960's).

You get basic instructions, 72 sheets of beautiful tissue paper (sized 9" x 6.5" to 9" by 11") and four pieces of blank white boards (heavier than poster board and slick).Supplies you will need:scissors, a brush for glue, glue or paste. You may also want to use crayons or colored pencils.

The basic instructions include information on what a collage is (two sentences) followed by simple instructions on how Eric Carle makes his collages:outline the shape, cut the shapes from the tissue paper and glue down.He then discusses adding details with pencils, crayons (water-soluable ones). He discusses how to glue down big pieces of paper (for background) and how he makes abstract designs with left-over shapes (by stapling rather than gluing). In addition to the instructions, there are examples of his collages from some of his books.

You don't really need any more instruction than that!

He ends with, "Good teachers don't want to be imitated; they want to inspire."

The tissue paper is really an important part of this book and as I said, it is beautiful. No two pieces are alike.Eric Carle painted the papers and then the printer reproduced them and bound them into the book.(The blank white boards are bound in, also.)

4-0 out of 5 stars buy this for the paper
this book assumes that you already know how to use scissors and glue. the rest is up to you! without giving heavy handed instruction, it lets kids (and adults) use their imagination to make what ever they like. the paper included is beautiful. in my mind, it's the whole reason for buying the book. you can make illustrations (collages) just like eric carle's. thanks to him for providing all his fans with this great pad of paper.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Total Disappointment!
Don't bother with this book, you'll be disappointed. The only thing worth while about this are the few sheets of decorative tissue paper that come with it. I know nothing more about collage after reading this book then before I bought it. Do yourself a favor and DON'T waste your time or money on this. There are MUCH more informative books out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Kids!
I was looking for a very elementary, how-to collage book for myself and this is a good one.

Because Carle wrote and stocked this book for children, it is very basic, but that was what I needed to get me over my fear of trying a collage of my own. His explanation of the format and process was very simple but very thorough. There are enough colors and designs of tissue papers to get anyone off to a good start in creating several different collages.

I think this would be a great gift for children and even for an adult who yearns to find the artist within! ... Read more

A sweet but about Eric Carles childhood. He gets to go to his aunt and uncles house and while he was there he helped his uncle at his job.I really enjoyed this book and the time his uncle set aside for his gave us a real treat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eric Carle never lets me down!
I read this book to my students in honor of Labor Day.It is a touching tale with amazing illustrations!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Art, and Toddler Loves the Story!
MY APRON is yet another excellent book from Eric Carle. Everyone at our house (toddler, mom and dad) loves this book.

The art in MY APRON has a somewhat different look for Carle. The pictures combine tissue paper collage in brilliant colors with dark black lines that combine to communicate the simplicity and excitement of the story. The illustrations also have a real love and respect for the manual labor of building that the uncle (a plasterer) is part of.

The story is great. It is a short vignette (autobiographical according to the afterword) about a boy's visit to his aunt and uncle. His aunt, seeing his excitement about it, makes him an apron just like his uncle's. He then gets to go spend a day at work with his uncle, where he gets to help him. They spend a long day at work.

One comment that his uncle makes that we hear is that the boy is "a good helper," and we see the boy repeat that comment to himself as he continues to work with his uncle. Our toddler picked up on that comment immediately. It is something that children love to hear, and I think he identifies with the boy in the story and the magic of getting to help at real work. At two, our boy is very interested in the work we grown-ups do, and loves to help. This book fits right in with that.

This is a wonderful book. We highly, HIGHLY recommend it!

3-0 out of 5 stars My Apron
This was story about a young boy who idolized his uncle, a plaster. The boy's aunt makes him an apron like his uncle and goes to work with him.

Note to teacher:This book could be used to teach different jobsand role playing.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Apron: A story from my childhood
My Apron is the story of a small boy who idealizes his uncle who is a laborer, specifically a plasterer. The uncle's uniform is a long white apron with a large pocket on the front. The boy's aunt sews him an apron like his uncle's and the boy spends the day helping his uncle lay plaster. The boy feels proud of his accomplishments and forms a warm bond with hisuncle through the experience of working together.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Matching Game, Not a Story, but a Fun and Durable One
Another of Carle's beautiful collage renderings of animals and their homes, this one is a flip-book.Each page is split into an upper and lower panel, and the reader finds the home (top) that matches the animal (bottom).Unlike other manipulative board books, this type doesn't depend on glue or sliding panels, and is unlikely to come apart (at least not quicker than regular board books).Because of its "puzzle" aspect, it could be good for adult-moderated problem-solving skills in younger children, and self-entertainment in older ones. It's a matching game, not a story, but it's worth acquiring if you can find it for a good price.

4-0 out of 5 stars homes don't match up with the animal...it's a 'flip book'
it's my fault - i didn't realize that when i bought it, that it was a 'flip book' - the child has to match the animal with its home...still a good book

5-0 out of 5 stars Eric Carle delivers again

5-0 out of 5 stars a great marriage of english and japanese in one story/song
love the 2 illustrator's distinct styles and the english/ japanese "stories" that are songs that start at opposite ends (Japanese start their books opposite the american way so it fits perfectly) and meet in the middle...really cute and well put culturally accurate. My students love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for those learning Japanese.
Eric Carle and Kazuo Iwamura, Where Are You Going? To See My Friend! (Orchard, 2001)

Once again, Eric Carle shows why he's one of the longest-standing, best-known and loved names in kids' books-- a bilingual (English/Japanese) book obviously aimed at the preschool set, but is also wonderful for adults trying to learn Japanese. Carle and Japanese kids' book artist Iwamura take pains to make sure the reader gets the picture that this is, in fact, a bilingual edition (the English moving left to right from the front of the book, the Japanese right to left from the back of the book, the two meeting in the middle) with graphic clues next to the words to let you know who's speaking (and how to look it up on the other side). The Japanese text also comes with pronounciations.

Great stuff, as always. If you're learning Japanese, no matter how old you are, you'll want it. ****

5-0 out of 5 stars An engaging artistic story of a dog, cat, rooster and child who embark on a journey to see their friends
In Where Are You Going? 5-0 out of 5 stars ESL

Here are three of his stories collected in one handsome volume: Rooster's Off to See the World, A House for Hermit Crab, and The Tiny Seed.

Dazzling collages of hand-painted tissue paper will entice young readers to become acquainted with numbers, the seasons, and the days of the week as they read. Rooster sets off to see the wide world in a day-long adventure. Hermit Crab spends a week in search of the perfect decorations for his shell. And a tiny seed travels through fall, winter, spring, and summer looking for a place to grow into a flower. These three stories involving counting and the passage of time will excite the imaginations of children and encourage their curiosity about the world around them. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Unuseable
I'm a fan of Eric Carle's illustrations and thought this would make a lovely small addition to a shower gift. When I received it, the paper was peeling off the blocks. It appears to be simply an illustration printed on ordinary paper, trimmed and pasted (rather poorly) on cheap cardboard blocks. A 5-second soak in toddler drool would would pretty much end its functional life. Too bad it's so poorly made, what were they thinking? I should think Eric Carle would want to take his name off it.

2-0 out of 5 stars not made of wood
I guess when I read the product description I didn't think about the blocks being made of wood.
The cubes are made of cardboard with paper around them and probably will not hold up very well.
Not worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for learning to write
I originally got this for my 1 1/2 year old, who had no interest in it.I'd agree with the other comments that the format is bad for that age level. However, my 4 1/2 year old got really interested in it, and it was the prompt that really got her working on her letters on her own.She would sit and copy words from the book and look through the book to match up words and pictures.Because there are so few words, I think it was approachable to her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginning-reader learning tool!
My older son is 3 years old and wanting to read more and more. This was a terrific little book that introduced him to some "sight words"... words that you can't, at least at age 3, necessarily sound out using basic phonics rules, but have to recognize when you see them.We liked it so much that now I'm hunting for more!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures, but not a great teaching tool
I bought this book as a reading supplement for my kids.Alas, the book's fonts are different from the letters children use when first learning to read and write, so letters like "g" and "I" and "a" resulted in some confusion.

I love Eric Carle's picture books, but as a learning tool, this one falls short of its intended purpose.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book for preschoolers
this has been a really great book for our 3-now-4-year-old who is just beginning to pick out sight words.it's really helped him matching lower case with upper case letters.as the other reviewer said, i wouldn't recommend it for a younger child; it's not a picture book as such.but for beginning readers, i think it's terrific.

2-0 out of 5 stars Can be confusing for achild
I bought this book thinking this would be a good book to get a toddler interested in reading. Upon opening this book, I noticed that all the pages are divided; the top is all words, the bottom is all pictures. You have to find the word to go with the picture. Very annoying to say the least because one has to go back and forth all over this book to find what matches what.Luckily I didn't spend much for it.The art is pretty as usual, but thumbs down on this book; it can make a child hyper trying to figure it out. ... The pictures are pretty, but there are some grammatical errors in the Spanish text.Disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just AWESOME!!
My son loves this book! We have been sharing this book since he was 5 months. He is now 10 months and loves it so much. He is able to turn the pages made of board. Very good quality book. Covers a blue dolphin, yellow bee, orange cat, green tree, purple grapes and red fire truck. It is avery engaging. There is a window on each page that slides back and forth and has the color in the window in english-spanish depending on the side you slide to. It has textured edges for the waves of the water etc. Its a very fun book. I recommend it for parents trying to teach their children both languages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Color/Colores
