Product Description
Today’s wildest journeys are in reality not so different from the days of classic exploration. Modern challenges continue to be measured in terms of both physical and psychological dangers, with the adventure traveler combing not only the globe’s far corners but also the human interior—the "naked soul" of man and woman.

Here is the first collection of all-modern, 20th- and 21st-century adventure travel writing. It includes Tim Cahill’s account of exploring Yellowstone, Kim Salak’s trek in 2002 to meet the stone-age peoples of New Guinea, Nick Danziger’s crossing the mountains of Soviet Afghanistan disguised as a Muslim, and Theodore Roosevelt’s rafting down an unknown tributary of the Amazon. The Mammoth Book of Wild Journeys is full of hair-raising tales of adventure from all around the globe. ... Read more

This is the stuff of legends — the true story of the life of Trader Horn. Down on his luck in old age, Horn recounts his wild youth as an ivory trader in central Africa, journeying into jungles teaming with buffalo, gorillas, and man-eating leopards; liberating an Isorga princess from captivity; navigating treacherous rivers; freeing slaves; and meeting Cecil Rhodes, the founder of Rhodesia. Trader Horn is a vivid and unforgettable portrait of a vanished period in African history. “An amazing book.... It casts a spell over one.” — The New York Times Book Review ... Read more

Product Description

Since the first successful ascent of Everest 50 years ago, many others have attempted the daunting summit, and many have succeeded. But, though Everest can be climbed, it cannot be conquered. Few know this as well as David Breashears. A filmmaker and veteran climber of the Himalaya, Breashears agreed to lead the May 1996 expedition that would capture Everest in a large-format IMAX© motion picture. Even in the best conditions, Breashears knew, Everest is a dangerous challenge—that May, an unexpected blizzard proved how deadly it could be. Shocking the world, the storm claimed the lives of eight climbers, including two of the world’s top expedition leaders.

Everest is the breathtaking chronicle of a filmmaking expedition turned rescue mission, and of the courage and cooperation of Breashears and his team as they rose to the life or death challenge. A companion to Breashears’s record-grossing large-format film, Everest features an introduction by Outside magazine editor-at-large Tim Cahill, an afterword by David Breashears, and 125 stunning, full-color images, including IMAX frames from the film.

Amazon.com Review
When David Breashears agreed to climb Mount Everest with anIMAX camera in order to film from the summit, he had no idea that hislittle expedition would become embroiled in a tragedy that would make headlines around the world. On May 10, 1996, two expeditions ledby experienced Everest guides Rob Hall and Scott Fisher summited themountain, only to suffer the loss of eight members--including the twoleaders--on the way back down. At the time, Breashears and hisfilmmaking crew were at the base camp preparing for their ownclimb--originally planned for that same day but postponed afterrealizing there would already be several other groups on thesummit. Instead of making a film, Breashears and company participatedin the rescue and only later reached the summit of Everest tosuccessfully complete their film.

Broughton Coburn, a long-timeresident of Nepal and a friend of David Breashears, was commissionedto write a book about the filmmaking expedition, the tragedy onEverest, and the mountain itself. He has more than succeeded withEverest: Mountain Without Mercy, a taut recounting of disasterand triumph at 29,000 feet. But this book is about more than justmountain climbing; Coburn has also included fascinating informationabout Nepal, Buddhism, and the Sherpa culture, as well as the historyof climbing Everest. He covers everything from the causes of altitudesickness to Nepal's increasing problems with deforestation, andthrough it all he weaves the story of that day in May when Everestagain proved unpredictable--and deadly. For a white-knuckle climb tothe top of the world's highest mountain, complete with stunningphotographs, you can't do better than Everest: Mountain WithoutMercy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic looking book...
Since I just received the book and haven't had a chance yet to read it yet, this is more of a recommendation of the seller then a review of the book itself.Book arrived promptly and well packaged. The book is in FANTASTIC shape. Thanks!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and educational
This book has excellent pictures as well as heart warming stories of true human compassion!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, a little bit too slick for my tastes, though
A very colorful look at Mt. Everest from the Imax Everest expedition. Much better than the Imax movie itself, compelling images interspersed with informative commentary and history from a number of writers.

Compared to Everest: Summit of Achievement this is a lightweight introduction. Yes, you will want to own this and read it more than once. Yes, it's better than the Imax Everest movie (not saying much). Unfortunately this book shares some of the superficial qualities the Imax movie had. The editors would have done well to drive their razor-sharp crampons a bit more forcefully into their subject matter, if you catch my drift...

5-0 out of 5 stars Everest: Mountain without mercy
This is another awesome book to show Mount Everest. If you like nice pictures of mountains(especially Mount Everest), this is the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
As a former climber, I've always been fascinated by Everest. This is a wonderfully written and beautifully photographed account of the ill-fated assault on Everest that took a number of lives.
Especially sad, since as I was reading it yesterday, we got word of the death of Sir Edmund Hillary. ... Read more

Kapitel: Christian Karembeu, Harry Kewell, Wynton Rufer, Mark Viduka, Robert Slater, Paul Okon, Tim Cahill, Aurelio Vidmar, Mark Bosnich, Brett Emerton, Frank Farina. Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Wynton Alan Whai Rufer, CNZM (born 29 December 1962), is a retired New Zealand footballer, who played as a striker. Arguably the best footballer to ever come out of the nation, he spent most of his professional career in Germany with Werder Bremen, winning a total of six titles. He also appeared for the New Zealand national team in its first FIFA World Cup participation, in 1982. Rufer was born in Wellington to a Swiss father and a mother of Māori descent. After leaving the city's Rongotai College, he played his first football for Wellington Diamond United, Stop Out and Miramar Rangers. After being voted New Zealand's Young Player of the Year in 1981 and 1982, Rufer attracted the attention of Norwich City manager Ken Brown, who invited the player and his older brother Shane to Norfolk for a trial. He impressed and signed a professional contract on 23 October 1981, becoming the first Kiwi to do so. However, he was denied a work permit to play in England, so he joined Fussballclub Zürich in May of the following year. Rufer would play in Switzerland in the following seven years, also representing FC Aarau and Grasshopper Club Zürich: whilst at the former, he topped the scoring charts at 21 in the 1987-88 season, helping his club to the fourth place. With the Hoppers, he won the domestic cup, precisely against Aarau, and surpassed the 100-goal mark in his years in the country. In the 1989 summer, Rufer signed with SV Werder Bremen, managed by Otto Rehhagel. His Bundesliga debut came on July 29, in a 0-0 draw at FC St. Pauli, and his impact was immediate, as he netted six times in his first 13 league matches. Overall, he would play an enormous part in the side's achievements, pairing with Klaus Allofs up front: on May 6, 1992...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

Excerpt:Playing statistics to end of Round 5, 2010 season . Matthew Knights (born 5 October 1970) is the coach of the Essendon Football Club and a former captain of the Richmond Football Club, of the Australian rules football sports scene. Knights wore the number 33 guernsey in 279 games between 1988-2002 for the Tigers whom he captained between 1997-2000. Playing in Richmond's midfield for the majority of his career, Knights was known for his ball winning ability if not his athleticism. Gifted with excellent "vision" or spacial awareness, and consistently reliable delivery from his left boot, given time and space Knights was one of the most damaging midfielders in the AFL throughout the 90s. Though rewarded with numerous individual honors playing in a mediocre team, Knights made only two appearances with the Tigers in the AFL Finals Series in 1995 and 2001. He was placed top four in the team's annual best and fairest vote seven times between 1990 and 2000 and equal second in the Brownlow Medal count for 1995. Knights' career was interrupted by a serious ankle injury in Round 2 of 1996 and a knee injury in the pre-season Ansett Cup competition in 1997. Late in 1998 he became one of the first high-profile AFL players to be diagnosed with the debilitating groin condition Osteitis pubis, which dogged him through much of the remainder of his career. His courage in leading his team despite these set-backs made him much admired by his team's supporters and his removal as captain just before the beginning of the 2001 season caused much controversy. 1-0 out of 5 stars Which Tim Cahill who who who?
Can't make out heads or tails on this so called book. It would help if more information on the subject were provided. To know if this is what or WHO we are trying to seek information about. What did he write or what is he known for? Just because his birth is 1944 is not enough to go on. Will have to pass. I wonder what or who would plunk down 10 bucks for very questionable information. If someone wants to make a real sale on this they would present more up front information on the subject they are trying to sell....seriously folks. ... Read more

Product Description
The original narratives of the whaling disaster thatinspired Moby-Dick.Melville's famous description of the sinking ofthe Pequod by the white whale--one of the most exciting moments inAmerican literature--was based on a true story documented in 1821 byfirst mate Owen Chase in his Narrative of the Most Extraordinary andDistressing Shipwreck of the Whaleship Essex, and by his shipmate andcaptain in two separate accounts. Each account tells of a spermwhale's attack on the Essex in the South Seas, and of the crew'sthree-month struggle while stranded in small open boats. Of twentymen, eight survived. Six who died were eaten by their shipmates,one--the cabin boy--after lots had been drawn. The captain writes thathe exclaimed, My lad, my lad, if you don't like your lot, I'll shootthe first man that touches you. The boy replied, I like it as well asany other. He was soon dispatched, the captain writes, and nothing ofhim left . . . my head is on fire at the recollection. This volumereproduces these gripping accounts, as well as Herman Melville's noteson the narratives. It sheds light on both our darkest impulses and ourmost ascendant selves, and gives rare insight into the workings of oneof the most important literary minds of all time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible .. all because of the real Moby Dick!
This is an incredible real story of survival. Who can ever would have thought that a huge whale will struck the wooden ship with such ferocity, twice. Here you will learn what really thirst and hunger is, and what are the effects of that in the body in a prolonged situation. Three months they were in the sea, because of a bad decision of heading south to the coast of Chile instead of moving with the currents to the nearby Tahiti or other islands of the mid pacific. This book has the account of Chase, the captain and one of the shipmates that were left in Henderson Island (Google Earth: 24°20'43S & 128°18'01W). The few boat survivors were taken to Valparaiso (Chile) for recuperation before going back home. This is a great book and a story that you can also read in Nathaniel Philbrick's, In the Heart of the Sea, a book I read a few years ago. Enjoy! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A strong addition to a terrific series
EXPLORE adds 18 well-selected tales of adventure to the Adrenaline series. They blend of humor, like Tim Cahill's Peruvian expedition with two eccentric companions; dangerous adventure, including A.N. de Vaca's exploration of America in the early 1500's; and more scholarly accounts, such as David Roberts' search for lost cliff dwellings in New Mexico. The best feature of this book, and the series as a whole, is that it exposes us to writings that we would otherwise never see.Ms Schwamm has cast her net widely and hauled in four centuries of engaging exploration stories. Some are excerpted from works out of print, but the bibliography makes it possible to track these books down if you must hear the rest of the story. So why only four stars? As a collector of the entire series, I find this volume less spine-tingling than the rest, with fewer stories of death-defying danger, which is okay - not all exploration involves a struggle to survive if you go about it properly. If you like National Geographic and the Discovery Channel, this is a book for you. ...
