Excerpt: Frances Burney (13 June 1752 6 January 1840), also known as Fanny Burney and, after her marriage, as Madame dArblay, was an English novelist, diarist and playwright. She was born in Kings Lynn, England, on 13 June 1752, to musical historian Dr Charles Burney (17261814) and Mrs Esther Sleepe Burney (172562). The third of six children, she was self-educated and began writing what she called her scribblings at the age of ten. In 1793, aged forty-two, she married a French exile, General Alexandre D'Arblay. Their only son, Alexander, was born in 1794. After a lengthy writing career, and travels that took her to France for more than ten years, she settled in Bath, England, where she died on 6 January 1840. Frances Burney was a novelist, diarist and playwright. In total, she wrote four novels, eight plays, one biography and twenty volumes of journals and letters. In addition to the critical respect she receives for her own writing, she is recognised as a literary precursor to prominent authors who came after her, including Jane Austen and William Makepeace Thackeray. She published her first novel, Evelina, anonymously in 1778. When the book's authorship was revealed, it brought her almost immediate fame due to its unique narrative and comic strengths. She followed with Cecilia in 1782, Camilla in 1796 and The Wanderer in 1814. All of Burneys novels explore the lives of English aristocrats, and satirise their social pretensions and personal foibles, with an eye to larger questions such as the politics of female identity. With one exception, Burney never succeeded in having her plays performed, largely due to objections from her fat...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=56578 ... Read more

Excerpt: Rachel Aliene Corrie (April 10, 1979 March 16, 2003) was an American member of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) who was killed by a bulldozer operated by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) while attempting to prevent IDF forces from demolishing the home of local Palestinian pharmacist Samir Nasrallah. According to the New York Times, Corrie and others were acting as "human shields." A student at the Evergreen State College, she had taken a year off and traveled to the Gaza Strip during the Second Intifada. The details of the events surrounding Corrie's death are still disputed. Corrie was born on April 10, 1979 and raised in Olympia, Washington, United States, Rachel Aliene Corrie was the daughter of Craig Corrie, an insurance executive, and Cindy Corrie, an amateur flautist. Cindy Corrie describes their family as "average Americans politically liberal, economically conservative, middle class". Rachel was the youngest of their three children. After graduating from Capital High School, Corrie went on to attend The Evergreen State College (TESC), also located in Olympia, where she took a number of arts courses. Excerpt: Mary Wollstonecraft (pronounced ; 27 April 1759 10 September 1797) was an eighteenth-century British writer, philosopher, and feminist. During her brief career, she wrote novels, treatises, a travel narrative, a history of the French Revolution, a conduct book, and a children's book. Wollstonecraft is best known for A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), in which she argues that women are not naturally inferior to men, but appear to be only because they lack education. She suggests that both men and women should be treated as rational beings and imagines a social order founded on reason. Until the late 20th century, Wollstonecraft's life, which encompassed several unconventional personal relationships, received more attention than her writing. After two ill-fated affairs, with Henry Fuseli and Gilbert Imlay (by whom she had a daughter, Fanny Imlay), Wollstonecraft married the philosopher William Godwin, one of the forefathers of the anarchist movement. Product Description
Fanny Burney was best known in her own time as the author of "Evelina" and other novels. Her modern reputation, however, rests primarily on her extensive journals and letters, first published posthumously by her niece and literary executive, Mrs Charlotte Barrett. In this initial volume of a new edition, Fanny's earliest journals are published for the first time in their original state, freed from the prudent afterthoughts of Fanny's old age. Much new material emerges from a deciphering of several thousand lines heavily scored over by Fanny. We here encounter the keenly observed world of a precocious young girl, expanding outward from the comfort and security of a London middle-class home to the glittering excitement of the capital, with its theatres, operas, pleasure grounds, and park promenades. Principal stars in these pages are Fanny's father, the music historian Dr Charles Burney; her sister Hetty and stepsister Maria Allen, whose love affairs read like a romantic novel; and Dr Burney's old friends Samuel Crisp - virtually a second father to Fanny - and David Garrick, the famous actor.Only a teenager, Fanny already sketches these and a host of other memorable characters with the sure hand of a seasoned artist. The result is a lively and fascinating portrait of Georgian England. ... Read more
