Arthur and Francine are square dancing partners in gym class. They really like dancing together. I am a kindergarten/first grade teacher.I read this book to my class around Valentine's Day.It is a great book for students this age. I think the students really like this book because at this age they are teased a lot about liking girls or boys. They can relate to Arthur and Francine in this book.

Product Description
It started the summer of 2002, when the Springfield librarian, Molly McGrew, by mistake drove her bookmobile into the zoo.

In this rollicking rhymed story, Molly introduces birds and beasts to this new something called reading. She finds the perfect book for every animal—tall books for giraffes, tiny ones for crickets. "She even found waterproof books for the otter, who never went swimming without Harry Potter." In no time at all, Molly has them "forsaking their niches, their nests, and their nooks," going "wild, simply wild, about wonderful books." Judy Sierra’s funny animal tale coupled with Marc Brown’s lush, fanciful paintings will have the same effect on young Homo sapiens. Altogether, it’s more fun than a barrel of monkeys! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars fun, with a great message
This has been one of my family's favorites for years - and it is a rare book that holds its appeal to toddlers and preschoolers.

5-0 out of 5 stars We're WILD about this book!
Our four and a half year old son loves this book so much he reads it every chance he gets (and that means several times a day - especially in the car). He starts at the beginning of the book and reads out loud: "Wild About Books By Judy Sierra, Pictures by Marc Brown..." He's got the ENTIRE thing memorized and has even learned new words, like "REDUNDANT" from Ms. Sierra's creative writing! Thank you so much Judy Sierra for such a wonderfully, kid-friendly book! Our whole family loves it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Incorrect illustrations
What would you think of a book that drew tigers' legs on their heads? Or a giraffe's tail sticking out of its neck?

Is it too much to ask that if insects are included in children's book illustrations that they actually look like insects? Why are our arthropods friends exempt from anatomical correctness? Did Marc Brown just say to himself, "it's too much trouble to figure out what walking sticks, dung beetles, millipedes, and giant hissing cockroaches actually look like -- I'll just make it up and hope no one notices?" All the aforementioned insects are referred to by name in the book.I'm not saying he should get a degree in entomology or anything, but in a book that children will be reading, why not make an attempt? What's next, pictures of cars with tires on top of the roof? No, that would be absurd.

If your children are not interested in insects, they will learn false insect anatomy from this book. If, like mine, your children are always bringing in insects from the back yard in jars, they will be confused about why the insects are drawn so inaccurately.

The rest of the book (storyline, theme, humor) are great but these illustrations should never have made it past the editor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting, imaginative tale of animals and books
Author Judy Sierra's playful, rhythmical, rhyming story of animals and books, combined with Marc Brown's cheerful, fanciful, lushly colored pictures, makes for a delightful book so enjoyable that it's hard to find words sufficient to describe it. The text is worthy of Dr. Seuss, and it's appropriate that this book is dedicated to the good doctor. I was immediately drawn to the book by its cover art, then found that what's inside is even better!

This is the tale of a Springfield librarian, Molly McGrew, who by mistake drives her bookmobile into a zoo. The birds and beasts go wild about all the marvelous books she brings. Here are a couple of my favorite bits: "She even found waterproof books for the otter, who never went swimming without Harry Potter"; "A tree kangaroo, who adored Nancy Drew, Began solving mysteries right there at the zoo, Such as, Why were the bandicoot's books overdue?" And pay close attention to the pictures, where you will see the animals reading books such as "The Wizard of Oz," "Peter Pan," "Goodnight Moon" and "Candide."

Since the animals don't always handle the books gently, Molly must give lessons in treating books right. Soon some animals start writing their own books, and other animals review them. With so many new books, Molly decides to start a branch library at the zoo, called the Zoobrary, to be run by the animals.

"Wild About Books" is fun, and funny, a read-aloud treat and a feast for the eyes, a celebration of animals and books, reading and writing. And this is one picture book that parents are sure to enjoy at least as much as their children do. Everyone will be wild about this wonderful, beautiful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Instant Favorite for my 3 Year Old
It took one reading of this book for it to become nightly "required reading" by my 3 year old son. Very quickly, he was differentiating an Oryx from a Gazelle and a Skink from a Lizard... In a recent trip to the zoo, he knew many of the animals by sight simply based of his experience with this book.

The very last page is a dedication poem to Theodore Seuss Geisel... and each time, he turns to me and says "Mommy, that's Dr. Seuss!".

Very captivating book that can be read over and over again without getting old for kids and grown ups alike. Illustrations are creative and writing has a good pace that makes the book go fast, much like something Dr. Seuss himself would have written. ... Read more

Customer Reviews (1)

5-0 out of 5 stars "So, Who's My Dad Today?"
"Arthur and the 1,001 Dads" is another in a series of great Arthur TV Storybooks written by Stephen Krensky. In this story, based on a fourth-season "Arthur" television story, Arthur and his friends are worried because it seems that once again, Buster will not be attending the annual Elwood City Father's Day Picnic. (Which, like most "all Elwood City" events, seems to include only Arthur and his friends and family, even though Elwood City is known to be a very large town.) Buster's Mom and Dad are divorced and so he doesn't get to see much of his Father. (That is, until "Postcards from Buster" came along, but this was written rather before then.

Arthur and his friends are stumped about how to help Buster, until they decide to seize upon an idea of D.W.'s that Arthur had previously considered rather dopey. If Buster's own father can't attend the picnic, they'll get him a replacement father, just for that day. This leads to a series of comic misadventures in which they try to find father-substitutes for Buster. Meanwhile, Buster grows more and more irritated at their attempts, as he's told them repeatedly that he has plans, but they just don't listen, especially Arthur.

The following may be slightly spoilerish, but really doesn't give away too much:

There are a few differences between this story and what's shown on TV, but nothing that hurts the story in any way. They mainly revolve around the things that Arthur and his friends try in getting Buster a replacement Dad. In the TV show, the Arthur gang attempts to get Pickles the clown to be Buster's temporary Dad. In the book, they consider the clown idea, but discard it because they feel it would make Buster stick out. Also, in the TV show, the Brain builds the LLAF (life-like automated father) out of parts from the cat he used to trick "Buster - Cat Saver" in a previous episode. In the book, it's called RALF (clever, could be pronounced like "Ralph") and although Buster mentions he built it from a project he was working on, there is no direct-reference to Cat Saver.

Overall, another great Arthur TV storybook offering from Stephen Krensky. Serious and poignant at times, but also with much of the show’s trademark humor. ... Read more

A classic Arthur Adventure- now on CD!

What makes a story entertaining? That's the question Arthur asks himself when Mr. Ratburn gives a creative writing assignment to his class. When D.W. yawns through Arthur's first story, he worries that his tale isn't exciting enough. Is the setting too humdrum? Maybe he needs to research his subject more thoroughly. Or perhaps humor is the key to creating a lively tale! With every new angle, Arthur's story takes one more hilarious step further away from his original idea - but is the end result really the tale he wants to tell?

Kids will love listening along as Marc Brown reads this classic Arthur story. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars arthurs nose
i really like this book because it is one of the older arthur book its the first one i read where arthur had a long nose. It also good because it tells little kids that it doesnt matter what you look like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Writing Possibilities!
This new edition of Arthur's Nose is as wonderful as the original, but now it's even more useful to teachers! In the front of the book, Marc Brown has included pages from his original manuscript and shown how he had to edit and revise things. What a great motivator for young writers learning that revision and editing are a part of writing. There is also a gallery of photographs from Marc's own family and Arthur's life over the years. An additional page of fun facts and all of the incarnations of Arthur's nose over the years, as well as a letter to readers, complete the additional pages of this anniversary edition.

Just like Peanuts characters, and others with whom we, or our children, grew up, Arthur's looks have changed over the years. What a great classroom discussion these changes could prompt!I could envision this discussion taking place, with more mature reasoning, from first to sixth grade, and I wouldn't hesitate to use the book as a writing springboard in those same grade levels.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet book!
I really thought it was a sweet book.I wonder though, if there was nothing wrong with Arthur's nose, why did the author change it for his other books? It sends the wrong message.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arthur's First Appearance
Of all the characters that have a book for every first, every problem, every holiday, Arthur is my favorite. Unlike some other series, the Arthur books don't bang you over the head with the moral of the story. It's there, but woven so subtly into the story that you discover it on your own.

WhenI first saw Arthur in his present incarnation, I thought he was some sortof a mouse. He's actually an aardvark. He looks more like an aardvark inthe earliest book. That's the problem: Arthur doesn't like his longaardvark snout.

His family loves Arthur and his nose. But the kids atschool, who are all different types of animals, sometimes make fun of hisnose, so Arthur decides to change it. He visits a rhinologist (who is arhino, of course), and tries out different pictures of noses. Would he behappier with a rabbit's nose? A chicken's? An armadillo's?

Finally, hedecides to stick with the nose he's got.

It's a great message for any kidwho feels a little different. But, look at Arthur today. What happened tothat long snout? No matter, he's still my favorite. As author Marc Brownput it in the first book, "There's more to Arthur than his nose."

"Arthur and the Nerves of Steal" is another great novelization of the show. In this book, Stephen Krensky successfully adapts a rather dodgy story about Buster stealing something called a "CyberToy."

Buster wants the toy so badly that he drops into Arthur's backpack when no one is looking. He then becomes paranoid and faces a moral dilemma as to what to do with it. As things grow worse, it seems there's only one choice.

Krensky once again adds in new details and dialogue, as well as great pictures. Another fine addition to the series. ... Read more

Product Description

The heart of Hollywood when Hollywood defined glamour, romance and sophistication, The Brown Derby was once the most famous restaurant in the world. Sinatra, Davis, Bogart, Tracy, Olivier, and Leigh dined, partied and romanced at its tables. The Cobb salad was created here, and its location, at Hollywood and Vine, has become part of the vernacular. Sally Wright Cobb remembers the heyday of the restaurant her husband founded in this richly illustrated cookbook and Hollywood memoir. Reproduced here are dozens of drawings, photographs and menus from the restaurant's unpublished archives. Many of the Derby's signature dishes are included, most notably, Cobb Salad.

4-0 out of 5 stars First Stop in Hollywood - The Brown Derby
I have been intrigued with the idea of having a meal at The Brown Derby since the first time I saw Lucille Ball dump a plate of spaghetti (a classic Derby dish, as it turns out) on William Holden's head. Alas, the era of The Derby is long gone, but this book, Brown Derby Restaurant takes you on a journey back in time when stars table hopped and coveted having their famous faces caricatured to grace the walls of these distinctive restaurants. That's right, there wasn't just one "Derby" but many different versions of the original, which is something I did not know until I read this book. I'll let the next reader of this book discover for themselves all the different incarnations of "The Derby." That was quite interesting, because they were all so different from one another and completely different from the original. The photographs of the celebrity patrons are wonderful and its fun to see them out socializing and not in character.
In the text recipes from the restaurants are included. I found these recipes to be quite ordinary and not very imaginative, but then you have to realize the era and the clientle. Just because Gary Cooper, Myrna Loy (Native Montanians), Carole Lombard, (Indiana), Clark Gable, (O-o-o-ohio!), and Robert Mitchum (Connecticut), were glamorous moviestars, in the end they were simple folk who probably just wanted a decent pork chop. At the Derby restaurants, they could do that. I wouldn't go out of my way to reinact any of these recipes unless I was babysitting a finicky toddler. All in all, this was a real page turner though and my husband enjoyed it as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Where's George???
Who today could know anything about the Brown Derby restaurant and not immediately recall what generated its legendary fame? Was it the food? The service? The décor? The clientele?Of course it's a given that all these were truly exceptional, yet none adequately explains how any Tom, Dick, or Harry from Kalamazoo would be so well acquainted with the name of this particular restaurant. After all, they were not patrons. For us non-celebrities, the Brown Derby probably entered our world through the hilarious exploits of Lucille Ball in the television situation comedy "I Love Lucy" in which she starred along with husband Desi Arnaz.Who can forget Lucy's attempts to be "discovered" by a studio executive, or to get a closer look at William Holden, at the Brown Derby?

If you lived in greater Los Angeles at that time, you might have heard live KNX 1070 News Radio broadcasts at noon from the Brown Derby, and the question of the day would always be, "Tell us, George, who's at the Brown Derby today?"That was how Lucy knew which celebrities were at the Brown Derby. And, because Lucy knew, all of America knew:this Brown Derby restaurant was the stars' favorite gathering place.

So, what's the point of this review?Simply the sad fact that "George," the maître d', radio announcer, friend of Robert Cobb, and the central figure to all the famous patrons at the Brown Derby restaurant, is no where to be seen in any of the multitude of celebrity photographs in the book.It had to be the most deliberative, vexing, and laborious part of Mrs. Cobb's work in producing this incomplete book to find enough photographs that somehow did not show a trace of Mr. George Aguilera among the celebrity patrons. It was no oversight.Word is that following Mr. Cobb's death, major differences arose between the Head Waiter and Mrs. Cobb as to business practices, and that Mr. Aguilera took an uncompromising stand in favor of maintaining the renowned level of quality, rather than to expand the tourist element, and in so doing, risk losing the exceptional level of service of which he was justifiably proud to offer his friends. This book is testament to the bitter parting of ways that resulted. How ironic then, that Mr. Aguilera's face, commonly seen on Brown Derby advertising billboards that said, "Go see George...," appears nowhere in this book of photographs.Nor will you find any evidence that the man who announced to the world the presence of his famous dining guests, his friends, was ever there himself.I rate this book as missing at least one star.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Brown Derby Restaurant: A Hollywood Legend
Anyone who is interested in old Hollywood must read this book.It is not only filled with pictures andrecipes, but nostalgia and history ofbygone days.Robert Cobb, not only owned the BrownDerby, but also owned a baseball team. The Hollywood Stars of the Pacific Coast League was in existence from 1939to 1957. The Los Angeles Dodgers cameWest in 1958 and the Stars were gone. The book was co-written by Sally Cobb, widow of the owner. Her personal thoughts and love are written throughout this book. I personally ama collector of old menu's and a historian regarding the Pacific CoastLeague. I certainly was fascinated andwrapped up in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Brown Derby: Wonderful Photos and Stories
A priceless photo collection of Hollywood Stars that have never been released or seen since the 1940's and 1950's. The photos are from the late Sally and Bob Cobb's personal photo collection and some photos were takenby Geroge Hurrell. The stories are captivating, heart warming and a part ofHollywood history that is a must for movie buffs and the novice a like.Clark Gable and Bob Cobb spent many years together, hunting and fishing. One night after the kitchen at the Durby was closed, Bob mixed a saladtogether made mostly from left overs. Since that night the famous salad hasbeen referred to as the "Cobb Salad". The story that bestdescribes the Cobbs is the one story about the WWII soldier..verytouching!A great gift or a nice coffee table conversation item!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Photos! Fabulous Stories! Fabulous Food!
You don't have to be a fan of "old" Hollywood to enjoy this wonderful book about a famous restaurant and its even more famous clientele.Fascinating stories accompanied by wonderful pictures. This isonly enhanced by the actual recipes of this great restaurant.A wonderfulcoffee table book that will start conversations about movies, movie starsand great food. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great!!!!
I bought this because I am a fan of Clay Aiken. He is so good at reading stories and does a great job of changing his voice to suit the various characters.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice for the car
We gave this CD to our daughter for her birthday as she recently has started listening to audiobooks and has enjoyed Arthur for awhile. This has been very nice to listen to in the car, and we were pleased to see that some of the profits go to a good cause. The only glitch is that many of the Arthur stories rely on the talented artistry of Marc Brown to convey the scene.Without the book directly in front of the child, parents really may need to explain what was visually shown by Marc Brown.Ex: In Arthur's Tooth, Arthur loses his first tooth because he is shoved by Francine. This is shown in the book, but never said in the story. My daughter wondered why Arthur was grateful to be pushed roughly.Aside from this, it has been great fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quiet Time Magic
This is a fantastic choice for children who love Arthur. The stories are so well read by the celebrities that they really capture my son's attention (he's almost 3), and mine too as I listened to some of my favorite stars (Kelly Ripa).I usually played this in his room when he was having quiet time/nap time.He would be able to play quietly because he was listening to the stories, which are his favorite anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Enjoyable
My kids love Arthur and this product is a nice treat! Each of the celebrities brought their own unique personality to the Arthur stories and make the entire Audiobook really enjoyable. It's also nice to see such wonderful celebrities take time out to record stories for charity.

Aside from the feel good factor, this is a really fun product that includes some of my favorite Arthur stories, pictures from his beloved books, the catchy Ziggy Marley theme song and a host of interactive games to keep the kids occupied.Don't be fooled! There's a lot on this little CD!

I highly recommend it.
