one of my favorite books as a child!
i was read this book and i read [ later on] many times when i was little,as I was an avid arthur fan! this was probably my favrotie and when i was 5 and got the chicken pox it was very comforting to know what would happen etc. i am just disappointed my children will not have to full opportunity to understand this book and the disease it talks about becuase of the legally required vacine and much smaller number of cases

maybe even by the time i have children this will be like small pox or polio and virtually wiped out

Great Substitute
My daughter lost her library book, so this was a replacement. I didn't know she'd lost a hardback book instead of a paperback. Oh well! The book was as described and will fit beautifully into the school library.

A Book About Being Sick That Children Will Like - a review of "Arthur's Chicken Pox"
My take on this book results from my observations of my four and six year olds (boy and girl).I think it would be popular with children precisely for the same reason that books on loose teeth are popular:children in this age range are tremendously curious about their bodies.

My daughter went frantic for a while inquiring about loose teeth.She inspected the mouth of anyone who had missing teeth or who had wobbly ones.She asked what happened to them that they got loose, and what happened to them after they fell out....

In the same way, I see her looking at this book about chicken pox.She (and to a lesser extent, her brother) are curious about the spots, what they mean, etc.Also, I think it is just dawning on children this age that they can get very ill, and I believe it is comforting to them see that they will be cared for.

[One mom commented that she was concerned about how much loving care was lavished on Arthur and D.W. But I think it is reassuring to children.]

This is a Good Book!
Buster's Dino Dilemma was fabulous.It was good because Buster thought about giving the fossil back, so he did.Buster gave the fossil back to Ranger Ruth but he didn't give the fossil before. It was bad because Buster didn't give the fossil back but then he did.It was great because Ranger Ruth didn't get mad at Buster because Buster got punshed before in a dream and she put the fossil on the showing place so everybody could look.People who like dinosaurs read it!People who don`tlikedinosaurspicksomethingelse.

Buster Lies

This book is so unrealistic! A kid (actully a bunny) steals a fossil from a state park. He goes through lots of trouble to smuggle it back to his house, and when he finally gets to his house, he decides he doesn't evenwant it anymore!And when he returns the fossil, the state park decides toput the fossil in the museum with a card that reads "Buster Baxterfound this fossil." Less interesting than others
My six year old daughter (strong reader) hasn't liked this one as much as the others as she finds it a bit boring. It has taken her much longer to read. However, she still wants to read others in the series.

A Good Improvement on The Teleplay
This book is based on an episode on the "Arthur" T.V. by Joe Fallon, and it's an excellent enhancement to an already good story. Rather than watching the T.V., readers are made to use their imaginations as part of the story, or even if they have seen the show, use their imaginations to fill in the details. Marc pays excellent attention to detail and although most of the credit goes to Fallon, those who saw the show will still find it worthwhile to read the book.

A fun Arthur story
Arthur has to collect money so the fire department can get a dog.He tries to give the money to the cook, but she doesn't see Arthur putting the money next to the ingredients.Something happens to the brownie mix by accident.Arthur is accused of stealing the money, but he really didn't.In the end, it all works out and the fire department gets a dog.I didn't want to put this book down because I wanted to find out what was going to happen.I think this book would be great for 7-8 year olds, especially for kids who used to enjoy the Arthur TV shows when they were younger.JG

Great Synthesis of Mystery and Comedy
(Cue detective-style voice) Let me tell you about a book. It's a very ordinary kind of book, the kind with both a front cover, a back cover and pages in between. The kind of book in which anything can happen - and usually does. (End detective-style voice)

Generally, when you pick up an "Arthur" chapter book, you can rely on an amusing as well as educational story. Any story feature Buster in his detective mode, however, is in a class of it's own.

Buster gets a detective kit and starts looking for a mystery. He even gets really into the role, donning a coat and fedora. At first, though, he can't find a mystery. Then, Arthur is accused of stealing the quarters that he was collecting for the "Buy a Puppy For the Fire Department" project. Arthur knows he's innocent and so do we, so needs somebody to help him, giving Buster his first case. Solving mysteries though, Detective Baxter, soon learns, isn't as easy as it seems.

This book is enjoyable for readers of just about an age, assuming they've reached the reading level to read a 58 page story in chapter book format. For the best effect, watch the TV version of this story first and pay attention to Buster's voice when he's speaking as a detective. Then read the story using that style of voice.

Krensky Makes it Bearable
Overall, I wasn't too impressed by the television version of this episode. There was a lot of bad dialogue, it's hard to watch any season five episode with some of the voice actors they had and it was painful to watch the Brain attempting to be funny. However, the wonderful Stephen Krensky actually manages to make a bad story into one that's actually kind of fun to read. He does so by adding details that weren't in the television version and adding extra dialogue to enhance parts o the story. Also, he smartly removed a very bad gag involving Brain's brain telepathically communcating with other brains. A good read for all Arthur fans. ... Read more

Great Chapter Book
Arthur wants to see his favorite band BINKY in concert, but because DW took so long deciding on which pair of shoes to buy, he gets the very last row in the auditorium. Like Watching an Uncut DVD
That's how I feel when reading one of Stephen Krensky's adaptions of the "Arthur" stories. He manages to do justice to the entire story, while also adding new details and bits of information to make it even more interesting. Unlike some books based on TV series, major plot or character details aren't changed and you don't feel like you're missing anything.

In this story, Arthur and his friends discover the game of marbles. Arthur and Buster find that there's a fun game to be played with them after Muffy dismisses the collection she received as a useless birthday present. Arthur learns that his Grandma Thora was champion player and starts taking lessons from her, but finds that she didn't teach him everything.

Fans who saw the original television story will once again be pleased with Krensky's ending. It keeps to the moral of the story, while at the same time adding something new. Another great addition to the Arthur Chapter Book series. ... Read more

Cute and Whimsical
I liked this book because there are so few children's books about Halloween.This book is whimsical with rhymes and such that kids like.There was even one part in the book where you can have kids draw what they think is coming next.My daycare kids loved it.

Classic Children's Book
This is a fun and not scary book for children age 3-8 years old. Nice illustrations. The story is told with rhyming words such as, " they each wore spectacles on their nose, and danced together on 40 toes".I read this to my children in the early 80's and have recently bought a copy for my 3 year old granddaughter.Obviously my son, her dad, remembers it fondly and requested it!

A Childhood Favorite
I remember my mom reading this book to me as a small child. We would read it together right before bedtime. I am now a senior in college getting ready to become a teacher and I will more than likely share this book with my future students because it has special meaning to me. I could see it being used to teach number sense and rhyming but I would be careful when using it in the classroom because of its underlying Halloween theme. Overall it is a great book that has sentimental value to me.

Goofy, slighty spooky, and very entertaining
The text and pictures are wonderful. It is a fun story about 4 witches who eat "bat wing sandwiches" and brush their teeth with "spider paste".This story is an annual Halloween favorite with my threechildren, ages 2, 4, and 6.I have shared this book with K -1 gradeclasses, and they seem to really enjoy it. Nicely Illustrated
My son already has D.W.'s Perfect Present, which is a great Christmas story. When I saw Arthur and the Big Snow in the store, I was happy to snatch up yet another wintry tale!

A huge snowfall dumps on Elwood City and Arthur wants to meet his friends at the big hill. However, Mr. Read won't allow Arthur to go with his friends because D.W. is to small to walk in the snow; he tells Arthur that they must wait until the snowplow comes through.

Arthur decides to go outside to play in the snow, but D.W. wants to come along. She asks Arthur to help her get dressed and they no more get out in the snow and D.W. begins yelling that she wants to go inside NOW because she can't move in the deep snow.

D.W. then asks Arthur to play some games, but Arthur wants to go back out in the snow by himself. He plays several games with his sister, but by the time the plow roars by, Francine calls to let him know that he missed both the sledding AND the hot chocolate.

Arthur is, of course, very disappointed. When his Dad asks him if he's ready to go sledding, he dejectedly says that it's too late. His Dad pulls out a new sled and Arthur excitedly agrees.

The Reads' have the hill all to themselves and they settle back home, sharing hot chocolate. Mrs. Read says "Sometimes, good things are worth waiting for."

As with other Arthur stories published by Little, Brown, and Company, Arthur and the Big Snow features glossy pages, colorful illustrations, and easy-to-read print. It's great for a bed time story, as well as for beginning readers wanting to practice. There is also a "board game" on the back of the book called Downhill Racers, which is played using pennies or coins. (Heads moves one space, tails move two). These back-of-the book games are always a neat plus to the Arthur books.

My only reservation about this book is the unanswered question as to WHY Arthur had to wait for snowplow so D.W. could tag along. There was no backstory explaining that Mr. and Mrs. Read were busy with projects and Arthur had to babysit (although Mrs. Read WAS sitting at the computer with tax books on her lap). I actually felt sorry that Arthur was stuck at home at D.W.'s every beck and call. If it were me, I'd rather hang out with my friends!

So, plot-wise, I think D.W.'s Perfect Present is better. However, both are lavishly illustrated and they're always well worth the affordable price, in my opinion. ... Read more

The Perfect Book!
I am a preschool teacher. A few years ago, a little boy asked if I knew the "pickle song"...I didn't (and neither did his mom). I told him I'd try to find a pickle song but turned up not one appropriate for a preschool child. So, I made one up. He told me, after I sang it, that it was the one! (Little children are easily pleased). All this led to "pickle day" for my class and has continued through the past few years. I never could find just the right book to read to the class on "Pickle Day".This summer, one of my students found "Pickle Things" at her library and had her mom keep renewing it until she saw me late in the summer. She just knew I'd love it....and I DID. I came home, looked it up on Amazon and found that it was out of print BUT copies were still available from private sellers. I ordered one and am SO happy to have it in my collection. It is the perfect story for little people and for the ones who aren't so little but have a love of a fun story with very cute illustrations. Wishing it would be republished for a whole new generation to enjoy.

Pickle things we never see
Like pickles on a pickle tree!

This is just a book of silly things (that are pickles) that we never, ever see. "We never see a pickle walk. We never hear a pickle talk."

The illustrations are what sell the book, with the grimaces the kids make as they try to stomach things like pickle cake, or deal with pickle hair.

This is an easy reader book, and sure to be funny enough to capture even the most reluctant child.

Excellent Teaching Material
I teach English in a medical magnet program for high school students wanting careers in medicine. This is just the sort of book from which I can pull thought-provoking excerpts. It's perfect for our purposes. (P.S. Some of the stories are a bit inappropriate for teens, but those are probably the ones I find most intriguing personally.)

Mostly true stories in a great book!
I've had this book for quite some time & have re-read it more than once. Each time I'm struck by how true to life most of the stories are & how many I've experienced in the time I've worked at my hospital ER. The only trouble? Some of these stories are known urban legends.

This book collects several stories, some of which are sad, some infuriating, some hilarious. One of the stories that always seems to stick with me is the one about the insane violinist. It's a truly sad story, that one. Luckily there's just as many hilarious stories to even the book out.

The only spot that marred this book was that there were a few urban legends thrown into the mix, such as the "Superman" sex fiasco. While I am willing to believe that there's people out there who might have gotten into a jam, the story given is pretty much identical to the one floating around on the internet. The story is still funny, it is painfully obvious that the person copied it off of the internet & it makes the many of the obviously real stories seem somewhat false by comparison. This isn't the only one in the book- there are several interspersed throughout the volume, some of which are ones that I've heard time & time again via various sources. How am I sure that these people didn't witness these? Because they submitted stories that have gone through several incarnations over the years, with the ones in the book being the "latest" versions. It just makes me wonder what type of screening & fact checking was done when this book was put together. Again, I just found that it made the true stories feel cheaper & faker just by being listed by those that were obviously listed so the submitter could see their name in print.

Other than that, this book is definitely worth the time to read. It makes for a wonderful "bathroom" or quick read book for those times when you can't sit & have a lengthy read. (Although if you do have the time, it's fine as a continuous read as well.)

Interesting book.
There are some jobs that you know must be filled with amazing stories from the people who work them.This is definitely a good example of that.Some funny, some sad.Thanks to all of you who shared these with us.
