4-0 out of 5 stars Broad Sampling of Bronte Works
A perfect gift. Like her biography, we hear from everyone, even Mrs. Maria Bronte. Lots of quotes from the books, poems.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the author's preface ...
The purpose of this book is to introduce the whole range of writings by the Bronte family to those who may only have heard of Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights.Even those who are familiar with the works of Charlotte, Emily and Anne Bronte may find quotations which are new to them and may be encouraged to read more of their poetry and letters, as well as perhaps the works of Branwell and Patrick which have never received the credit they deserve.

A secondary purpose, though no less important, is to attempt to dispel the popular misconception that the Brontes led tragic and miserable lives, dogged at every step by death and disaster. It is quite clear from their own writings that the Brontes enjoyed normal lives and that it was only in their ability to write so powerfully and movingly that they were different.

The quotations are arranged according to the day on which they were written, but not in chronological order. As the Brontes were almost fanatical in their habit of dating their written work, it is thus possible to find a quotation for almost every day of the year. Many of these are actually appropriate for the season or the incidents of that particular day and their wide range gives some idea of the variety of the Brontes' writings.

For those who wish to follow up particular quotations, the notes at the end of the book give the year in which the piece was written, and the source from which it was taken.I hope, in this way, to introduce more readers to the Brontes, whose works have never failed to give me pleasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars INFO...
The Bronte sisters' (Charlotte, Emily & Anne) very first published works are in this book, published under their pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell in 1846. A thousand copies were printed, privately funded by the Brontes themselves, but the 'Poems' were a commercial failure, with only 39 copies being bought or (mostly) handed out to reviewers and friends. This is a reprint of these original poems with a new introduction by Mark Seaward. ... Read more

Product Description
"Agnes Grey" is the story of its title character who takes up a position as a governess. Anne Bronte's first novel was based on her own experiences as a governess and depicts the loneliness and isolation of the position. Agnes Grey as governess of the Bloomfield and Murray households experiences hardship and humiliation as a result of the families' snobbery. "Agnes Grey is" as much an autobiographical account of Bronte's own experiences as it is an indictment of the shallowness of the upper class. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The trials of the Victorian governess
No one knew better how trying the life of a governess can be than Anne Bronte. Most of the novel can be considered slightly autobiographical as Anne recounts the many horrors that await the governess arriving to educate the children of a strange family.

Like Agnes Grey, Anne Bronte was employed with two families. The first situation she found intolerable. The children were unruly and the parents completely unresponsive to Anne's complaints and concerns. The second family almost drove Anne back to Haworth, but in the end she won the hearts of her pupils.

Agnes Grey tells the story of Bronte's experience as a governess. Like Anne Bronte, Agnes is the daughter of a clergyman in the north of England. She is a member oflarge family, which decreased in size after some siblings died in infancy.

Poverty drives Agnes Grey to seek a position as a governess with a family named Bloomfield. The children, however turn out to be a nightmare and their cold hearted mother expects Agnes to perform miracles. Fortunately, Agnes is fired and finds employment with the Murray family.

Her new pupils are: Matilda, Rosalie, and John and Charles. Most of the novel focuses on Matilda and Rosalie since John and Charles are sent away. Matilda is somewhat of a tomboy, rough, violent with an unlady-like tendency to swear. Rosalie is beautiful and uses that beauty to her advantage. She aims to marry well and has her sights set on what she considers the perfect husband, who will provide the perfect home. However, Rosalie is quite the little flirt and thinks nothing of making young men fall hopelessly in love with her just for the fun of it. Agnes watches her charge with a disapproving eye but becomes heartbroken when Rosalie's flirtations threaten her own happiness.

I found Agnes Grey extremely sweet and well-written. Anne Bronte's gentleness shines through every page. I was anxious to read something written by Anne after reading some Bronte biographies, Agnes Grey was exactly what I expected from such a tender soul as Anne Bronte. ... Read more

Product Description
The Bronte sisters have little resemblance to any writers prior to their publication. They are viewed as self-generated, an autonomous myth in their lives and in their work. This title offers an extensive biography, along with critical examinations of their novels as a group, Withering Heights, Agnes Grey, Villette, and more.

This series is edited by Harold Bloom, Sterling Professor of the Humanities, Yale University; Henry W. and Albert A. Berg Professor of English, New York University Graduate School; preeminent literary critic of our time. The lives of the greatest writers of the world are explored in the new series Bloom’s BioCritiques. In addition to a lengthy biography, each book includes an extensive critical analysis of the writer’s work, as well as critical views by important literary critics throughout history. These volumes are the perfect introduction to critical study of the important authors currently read and discussed in high schools, colleges, and graduate schools. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A focussed, critical look at the Bronte sisters
This slender volume contains a number of interesting critical articles on the Brontes and some analysis of influences on their writing. Some comparisons are made between the Brontes themselves as well as other writers.

The book includes a useful bibliography, a timeline and lists some Bronte-related websites.

Recommended for those who want to know more about the life, times and influences behind the Brontes without immersing themselves in the glorious detail that the biographies provide.

Recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the Brontes
This book is an excellent introduction, for the young and old, into the world of the Brontes. It's a slim volume full of wonderful photographs that, if nothing else, will serve to make the reader want to learn more about this family. Not just about the three daughters who published novels, but about the two men in the family who didn't. And you'll also want to know more about Tabby the maid. In the end, this book will lead you to read other books about the Brontes. And maybe, if you haven't already, you'll read all that they wrote and drew. ... Read more

AS WE drove along, my spirits revived again, and I turned, with pleasure, to the contemplation of the new life upon which I was entering; but, though it was not far past the middle of September, the heavy clouds, and strong north-easterly wind combined to render the day extremely cold and dreary, and the journey seemed a very long one, for, as Smith observed, the roads were very heavy. ... "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" is a novel about the suffering of one woman living in an unhappy marriage, and Bronte uses that story to display the harassment of women of that time trapped in unequal relationships. The character development is very strong and realistic, and the dialogue of the novel is very powerful.

5-0 out of 5 stars written in the charming style of a 20th century Jane Austen!
I LOVE Charlotte's dramatic and gothic Jane Eyre; I am captivated by the intrigue of Wuthering Heights, but I am charmed and warmed by the gentleness and simply beauty of Agnes Grey. It's plot leaves you wishing that Anne had not died before giving us a sequel!I happened across this jewel of English fiction while searching for Bronte and Austen style books on Amazon.com.Each of the Bronte sisters had a gift for writing and this is one of my favorite novels that I read at least once a year.I like the Everyman's version best because it gives a timeline of the Bronte sisters lives, biographical information about Anne Bronte and includes insights into her life and spiritual growth as a young woman. The poems included at the end of the book are a treasure as well.It is as if,the heroine, Agnes, is actually a reflection of the author herself just as Charlotte reveals her own nature and convictions through Jane Eyre.It is a lovely journey into the social and spiritual struggles and life of a young womean.A finely written piece of literature that should be in every single Christian woman's library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Short and sweet, but not the Brontes' best work
This work of the lesser known Bronte sister is a short and easy to read classic.I would recommend it to anyone who wants a quick introduction to the Bronte's work (the reading level would probably be appropriate for middle school and up). However, the book contains definite overtones of Jane Eyre, so much so that I would say if you have read Jane, you need not bother with Agnes.Like Jane, Agnes is also a plain governess longing for love.Unlike Jane, Agnes Grey has far less mystery in her life.I would say that the story's biggest flaw was its overly sentimental plot, which crosses the line into corny at the end.The poetry section is short, but I enjoyed many of the poems.I am not a poetry expert, but the poems seemed to me to be a little like a mix of the styles of Emily Dickinson and Edgar Allen Poe, but the subject matter was always purely sentimental. If you want to try out this style of literature before committing to reading something longer or if you've read Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and Villette, and you still crave more of the Bronte's work, then you will probably enjoy Agnes Grey. This particular edition is also a good value. ...
