atrocious, abysmal, groan inducing
Grendel Briarton, more widely published under the pseudonym of "Reginald Bretnor", wrote an extended series of occasional pieces known as "Feghoots", initially for The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction and later for other magazines. As the title suggests, this volume is a collection of these succinct tales.

Each Feghoot finds our hero, one Ferdinand Feghoot, in a different locale and century, from Hawaii at the "farewell supper" for Captain Cook to the most distant solar systems and millenia. Feghoot wanders through each tale .. perhaps 'tail' would be more appropriate, for these are the shaggiest of shaggy dog stories .. with debonaire aplomb, resolving each conflict (from the mundane to the world shaking) with a casually tossed off pun, all within one or two pages.

Not everyone's cup of tea, but if you are into the SF scene (please, not 'sci fi') , and appreciate truly horrible puns, it might be right up your alley.

(I am working from my treasured copy of this original, 1962, edition; there were also editions in 1965, 1975 and 1980 with additional Feghoots.The 1962 version has particularly delightful illustrations and cover by Bruce Ariss; illustrators vary in the other editions.) ... Read more
