5-0 out of 5 stars A critique of Spanish life
I have seen the film several times, always missing the piint, and seeing it as a personal tragedy for Gallardo. More importantly, after I read the book, in English, I found that it is a stinging critique of fascism, of catholicism in its primitive forms, of the wealthy and their sloth and a glorification of romanitc, populist truth in the form of the bandit who appears in the middle of the book(This is omitted from the film!)I found it powerful writing, full of magnificent symbolism e.g. when Gallardo goes into the Church to pray, and clean, evocative writing. I now intend to read it in el Espanol.

5-0 out of 5 stars All About Juan
Who in the world is Juan Gallardo?
This could be the question you're asking yourself.
Juan Gallardo is a good looking young man who keeps
the family tradition of bullfighting alive. After
living in poverty most of his life,Juan becomes
famous and rich.He marries a pretty young woman
called Carmen.Their happiness is interrupted by
the sexy Dona Sol.Juan, who is naive and illiterate
succumbs to Dona Sol's temptations, leaving behind
a distraught Carmen and cuadrilla.
Juan Gallardo is not clever. He has everything he
could want, but it is never good enough. He squanders
his money on valueless items and alcohol rather
then using it to do good for someone else.
We pity Juan for this reason but also ask
"Where are your brains?"
Ofcourse we know that if Juan had had brains
he may not have been a matador.
It is safe to say his theme song would have
been "If I only had a brain."
This is what makes the story interesting,
besides, how often do we get to read about

bullfighting?
If you want to know what happens to Juan
at the end, READ THE BOOK!!! ... Read more

These 13 short stories by 5 authors of the era include 4 tales by Miguel de Unamuno — famed as a novelist, essayist, and poet, and one of the few internationally known and acclaimed Spanish writers of the 20th century — along with the works of Valle-Inclán, Blasco Ibánez, Baroja, and "Azorín" (José Martínez Ruiz).

5-0 out of 5 stars Generation of 1898
Valuable introduction to a key period of Spanish literatur. Blasco's regional stories were amongst his best work. Basque, Pio Baroja, is much neglected in England, as is Unamuno. The other authors are not to be found easily in English.
Dual-language presentation has a direct simplicity for students. Good introduction and translation in this volume. Dover Publications are always well-produced.
I must add my appreciation of the management of Amazon. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A propaganda novel !
The writing is good and the story is gripping. But one should not forget that the author was given the task of writing this war novel by Poincaré, who was French president in the years leading up to the first world war. This novel was designed as a partisan, pro-French, anti-German novel right from the start. And indeed, its analysis of the responsibilities for the first world war are black-and-white: the phillistine and war-mongering Germans on the one hand, the peace-loving French on the other. Such a depiction might have been right for the second world war but it wasn't for the first. In 1914 France was eager to wage war to recover the two provinces it had lost in the 1870 war. For a non-biased impression of the first world war I recommend Verdun, The Prelude, The Battle by the French writer Jules Romains.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another world
This book depicts in great detail a way of life that is so changed from the present that it might as well be science fiction. The story begins in South America and moves to France and both places are described in lovingdetail. The father had first left Europe to avoid serving in the militaryand he returns, unknowingly, in time for his son to become involved inWorld War I.The description of the changing opinions and moods in Pariswere fascinating. How many times have people thought a war would be overin a matter of weeks? The insight into pre World War I Germany was veryeducational. Many of the characteristics that I had assumed arose with theNazis prior to WWII were clearly present much earlier. This book shouldnot be missed by anyone interested in history or human nature.

4-0 out of 5 stars A unique account of World War I
This novel concerns the Desnoyers family, who move from Argentina to France just before the start of World War I. Desnoyers is a Frenchman, his wife is Argentinian and his brother-in-law is German. When tensions betweenGermany and France mount at the beginning of the war, the already difficultfamily relationships are strained. Sisters cannot understand theirdiffering loyalties. Desnoyers cannot accept the laid-back lifestyle of hisson, who prefers to tango and does not jump to enlist in the army. Thisson, Julio, is later devestated by a broken romance and joins the army inan attempt to heal himself. The war changes everyone. As the conflict goeson, the ideaology of the time is examined in great detail, as is themind-set of each of the primary characters. While it takes a while toreally get involved in the story, the conclusion of the book is ultimatelyvery moving and the novel seems to make an important point about the natureof war and the bonds that tie fathers to sons. "The Four Horsemen ofthe Apocalypse" is clearly an important piece of historical fictionwhich is still relevant today.

4-0 out of 5 stars 36th printing from 1918
This novel with the famous title is a historical adventure fiction from the early 20th century. It is an adventure on a level akin to the Count of Monte Cristo. A good read for the adventure reader looking for new (old)territory to learn about. ... Read more

Product Description
1920. Ibanez, Spanish novelist and political activist, he also wrote The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, which made him world famous. The book begins: The Prince repeated his statement: Man's greatest wisdom consists in getting along without women. He intended to go on but was interrupted. There was a slight stir of the heavy window curtains. Through their parting was seen below, as in a frame, the intense azure of the Mediterranean. A dull roar reached the dining-room. It seemed to come from the side of the house facing the Alps. It was a faint vibration, deadened by the walls, the curtains, and the carpets, distant, like the working of some underground monster; but there rose above the sound of revolving steel and the puffing of steam a clamor of human beings, a sudden burst of shouts and whistling. Product Description
The morning of that day—it was a Tuesday of the Lenten season—could not have dawned more promisingly. The sea, off the Cabañal, was in flat calm, as smooth as a polished mirror. Not the slightest ripple broke the shimmering triangular wake that the sun sent shoreward over the lifeless surface of the water.
The fishing fleet had headed, bright and early, for the grounds off the Cabo de San Antonio; and all the seines were out to take full advantage of the perfect weather. Prices on the market of Valencia were running high; and every skipper was trying to make a quick catch and get back first to the beach of the Cabañal, where the fisherwomen were waiting impatiently.
Toward noon the weather changed. An easterly wind came up, the dread levante, that can blow so wickedly in the gulf of Valencia. The sea at first was lightly wrinkled; but as the hurricane advanced the placid looking-glass gave way to a livid menacing chop, and piles of cloud came racing up from the horizon and blotted out the sun.
About three o'clock on the black horizon a line of sails appeared, driving before the gale like puffs of foam that vanished suddenly in the troughs of the waves to dart back into view again on the crests succeeding. The fleet was returning like a frightened herd in stampede, each boat plunging in the combers with the bellow of the tempest upon its heels. Would they make the lee of the Breakwater? The wind in devilish playfulness would here tear off a shred of canvas, there a yard, and there a mast or a tiller, till a rudderless craft, caught abeam by a mountain of greenish water, would seem surely to be swallowed up. Some of the boats got in. The sailors, drenched to the skin, accepted the embraces of their wives and children impassively, with vacant and expressionless eyes, like corpses suddenly resurrected from the tomb.
That night was long remembered in the Cabañal. ... Read more
